I've been busy having a new baby boy, fixing up my house, and working!

Fortunately I have a neat stop-motion project to show you, and some neat pictures from the making of!

Our humble, messy, attic studio

We used a basic aluminum wire armature for our puppet. Other materials are shown. If you have any questions feel free to ask!

Is it cheating to modify doll clothes? I hope not...

Isaiah the Giant

If you want to get an earful ask Isaiah about his "fractured time" theory. Spoiler: the puppets are alive.

Isaiah animated most of the sequence, but when I finished our shoot he wasn't there to take a congratulatory picture so I had to do it myself.

Just a little lighting test before we got everything finished.

Constellatin color sketch

Just a little Photoshop sketch to work out some colors. We are going full steam ahead. I'm starting to research how I am going to make this forest (trees, rocks, grass, flowers, bushes, foliage, mushrooms, fungus, ect). I don't want to just by moss for grass, I want it to be stylized, but realistic. If anyone from the Paranorman crew sees this blog I'd love to talk to you about trees, leaves, and grass.

In this color sketch I was trying to work out mood and color of a section of our script. I also wanted to see how cartoony we can get with the Hiker(our main character) without undermining the story. The more stylized the aesthetic of the film is, the more we can make things out of cheap materials. I'd like to stay away from silicone and foam latex as much as possible.

What are your favorite stop-motion films? I need to start researching other films to help me get a context and foundation for the visuals in this film. Don't bother telling me about the big releases that have come out in the last few years. Tell me about your secret favorite films.

My film is moving from writing and thumbnail story boards into character and set design. Here is a little paint/sketch of our main character. This isn't a final design, but just trying to play around with his proportions.

I didn't realize it has been almost 6 months since my last post. It definitely isn't because I haven't been drawing and sculpting. So I'm going to start posting more frequently.

Things with our script are wrapping up. So I've been trying to put some extra time into settling on a design for our character (the left side of the page). Things are going kinda slow in that department. But what my (little) experience has taught me anything its that if I keep working and spinning my wheels, I'll eventually snag some traction and things will take off quickly!

Do you ever feel like you are just spinning your wheels on a project? What have you done to keep your enthusiasm and get some traction?

I'm trying something new. I'm just making my blog post directly on facebook. If you like this better than links to my blog let me know.

I've been playing around with the main character's proportions. I need to get out of my own brain for a bit and get loose. I seems like you have to draw a couple hundred crappy character designs before you get one that seems to fit.

In related news thing are gearing up with our film. We are hoping to start building puppets this fall and shooting tests. Keep an eye out for a facebook page for updates on the film, behind the scenes photos and drawings.

Want to know what I thought of the movie?

We've all seen the trailers, so I don't need to go into how immensely awesome the animation, armatures, sets, lighting, cinematography, props, and effects animation is.

Top-notch awesome stuff...
What sets ParaNorman apart from most other stop-motion features I've seen is the story.

I think its safe to say this isn't your typical children's zombie movie. There are many nods to many other zombie movies, and I laughed out loud multiple times. (I also felt a couple tugs on the ol' heart...)

Did I mention that I think it is the biggest contender for and Oscar this year?

I won't say too, much else about this film. But I do want to issue a HUGE congratulations to all who worked on the film over the last two years. You've out done yourselves and have inspired your fellow stop-motion artists.

Now to double down on that stop-motion short I'm working on this year. Any ParaNorman crew want to help a brother out?

I'm going to start doing some clay sclupture sketches (inspired by my internet friend Ben Whitehouse)

Do you know of any video tutorials with little tricks to use when sculpting with clay? I've got some experience with it, but I'm always trying to learn more.

Look I did it! I actually did some life drawing! I've been telling you guys I needed to do more, so here is proof.

Yeah, it is only one little sketch, but you know what they say about the journey of one thousand miles....

I am really enjoying these Col-Erase colored pencils and white liquid acrylic aesthetic. Does anyone know if There are other colors of Col-Erase colored pencils?

The official start of my new sketch book!

I couldn't think of a reward to put in the front. Perhaps I should just try to shame whoever might find my sketch book into being a good person and emailing me.

Something like:

"Really? Do you need a reward to be a good person?"

or

"Cursed be those who disturb the rest of ~~Pharaoh~~ this sketchbook. They that shall break the seal of this ~~tomb~~ sketchbook shall meet death by a disease that no doctor can diagnose"

But that might be a bit harsh...

Flash Animation Test.

I wanted to "finish" some (very, very simple) animation in Flash, but it ended up with me learning about animating gradients. Flash is pretty neat when you aren't being frustrated by it.

My line work has improved in Flash considerably after starting to utilize the pen tool while cleaning up. Still, I would rather get a good line/shape the first time. Does Flash take this much work for everyone else?

I really need to try out Toon Boom.

What do you use for your 2d animation, do you like it? Do you have any tips for me as I am starting to learn how to clean up animation in Flash?

I finished my sketch book!
Its always a good feeling to move on to a new one. This one turned out to be more of a "quick painting book", but I had a lot of fun learning more about values and trying to render lighting.

I think next I need to work on life drawing. I know I am always saying this, but drawing from life is the source of great cartoons! How can you know how to stylize well if you don't have anything to stylize from?

How do you keep yourself in balance between drawing from life and drawing from your head? Let me know!

I've been out of the game for a bit. Work has been pretty crazy, and some other things are brewing on the horizon. Each eats away at the time I usually spend in my sketchbook.

I only have one page left in my sketchbook and I am looking forward to finishing it up and starting a new one! Fresh starts are always the best!

brown liquid acrylic

I might be beating a dead horse here, but I've been jamming on these liquid acrylic. I love them. If you want to start learning how to paint start with a monochromatic palette. I've learned so much by simplifying what I am trying to do.
