2013 College Commencement Speakers

It's that time again – the weather is nicer, the finals have begun, and graduation is here...for better or worse. If you’re a college student, most likely you’re dividing your time between last-minute study sessions, last-hurrah all-nighters with roommates and friends, and all the conflicting emotions that come with the end of senior year (A sigh of relief? Crying over a pint of Ben & Jerry’s? Shouting and dancing across campus? Severe denial? Actually, I went through them all).

However you’re feeling about the end of your college career, one thing doesn’t change: the graduation ceremony. Students across the nation will sit in a sea of caps and gowns (Is there another way to portray this scene?) and listen as their commencement speaker imparts some words of wisdom, advice, and hopefully humor to inspire and motivate you as a college graduate. Whether your commencement speaker is a celebrity, a CEO, or the President of the United States, soak up the experience as a chance to learn from the successes (and failures) of those who have been there before you, and take their words to heart.

What I took for granted

I recently spent a day up at my alma mater (UNH – go Wildcats!) to help out a student organization. Maybe it was the sunshine, maybe it was the overwhelming nostalgia, but I couldn’t help walking around with a smile, looking at the campus – my home for four years – and realizing just how much I missed it.

By the time college graduation rolled around, I was so ready to get out of there and just be done with school. But after living at home for a year like many of my peers, I’ve come to terms with just how amazing college life really was, and the things I took for granted while I was there. So seniors, when the temps get higher and your motivation gets lower, take a minute to appreciate the random parts of college life that you won’t get back once you leave.

Adventures of a 50 Year Old Intern: The Workplace Generation Gap

If it’s been a long while since you’ve worked full-time, you’ll likely notice two things when you return to the work force – computers and computer-based technologies have revolutionized the modern office, and your co-workers are now younger than you.

Much has been written about the dynamics between younger bosses and older employees, but a lot of those issues stem from differences in communication styles. I’ve been working part-time for several years now while I raise my family, and I have always gotten along well with my bosses and co-workers no matter their age. There’s no mysterious trick to this, I just treat everyone with respect.

Here are a few useful tips to help baby-boomers and their younger counterparts see eye-to-eye:

My Advice To The Older Generation
1. Sure Mom, O.K. Dad
Your youthful co-workers want to be compared to your kids about as much as you want to be told you remind them of their parents, or worse yet, their grandparents. Talk about your children when its appropriate, but never by way of comparison. Offer personal advice only when asked - no one wants to be parented at work.

2. Check Your Email…A Lot
Post baby-boomers like to communicate electronically...even when they are sitting right next to you. It’s their equivalent of note-taking, only in reverse.
When you tell your co-workers something, they will often ask you to email them the information, as they will be doing with you throughout the day. (Email frequency rates can be calculated in reverse proprtion to the sender's age).

My Advice To The Younger Generation
1. Tell Us How Often You Want Us To Check Our Emails
Instant communication methods have may have revolutionized the 9 to 5 workday, but old habits are hard to break. If you want to email us outside the workday, and expect to receive an answer before the next workday, make that clear. Otherwise we’re probably thinking we’re “off the clock”.

2. Head To Foot
If a younger boss who wants to gain the respect of older employees, just looki them straight in the eyes. Face to face conversation is what we value. Neither should you settle for surrounding yourself with younger workers because you feel more comfortable with them. Experienced workers really do have a lot to offer and you’ll ultimately be shooting your own self in the foot anyway - you will be the older worker someday.

3. The Art of Social Interaction
My generation is adept at reading facial expressions, intonation and body language in order to communicate effectively. No matter how helpful :) or :( or !!! can be in an email message, knowing what you want us to think you feel is not the same thing as knowing how you feel. Someday your generation will be in charge of the world and I, for one, don’t want the leader with the nuclear missiles pointed in our direction to misread the tone of your email :o !

While so much attention gets focused on colleges that have released their final admissions decisions, the reality is that many of the more than 2,000 colleges and universities in the United States are still accepting applications. So for students who either decided not to apply to college earlier or students who are not satisfied with their current offers, it is not too late to explore applying to college. High School Students: Top 5 Reasons You Should Watch Connecticut College’s New Google+ Hangout Series

At Connecticut College, we’re constantly looking for ways to give prospective students an authentic view of campus life. Through the creation of a new campus Twitter account(@ConnCollegeLive), a pair of campus contests (Student Minute Contest, Camel Photo Contest) and our admission counselors’ involvement with Twitter (They all have active accounts), we’ve dedicated ourselves to being on the forefront of college admission transparency.

Our new Google+ Hangout series is a way for prospective students and parents all over the world to learn about the transition from high school to college and what makes Connecticut College great. This web series is designed to give our students a chance to share their stories with prospective students in the most interactive way possible – through a live video show and a tweet chat. It’s easy to use – anyone can watch and anyone with a Twitter account can log in and submit questions.

Whether you’re anxious or excited about your transition to college, it’s always nice to hear current students’ perspectives (especially students who just went through the process).

Many colleges offer a random assortment of videos on YouTube or their own websites, but with Google+, Connecticut College has taken it a step further, instituting a comprehensive series of interactive Hangouts consisting of 11 live-streamed sessions over three months. Each themed session takes place at 7 p.m. with a new panel of students, a new special guest and a new admissions counselor hosting the show each week.

So far, we’ve chatted about everything from campus life to study abroad to getting accustomed to residential life. (Check out the complete list)

You dictate the show:

We decided to partner the Google+ Hangout with a tweet chat, which gives us the ability to address student and parent questions in real time, on air. It’s pretty simple – all you have to do is tweet using the hashtag #CChangouts. If you don’t have a Twitter account, we’ll show you how to sign up for one on our website: (www.conncoll.edu/cchangouts).

Tweet us a question during the session and we’ll throw it over to the session host, who will incorporate it into the discussion – sometimes asking student or staff and faculty panelists to use pictures and videos to supplement their answers. It’s a seamless experience that’s designed to help students get their questions answered as directly as possible.

This marriage of video and Twitter has worked beautifully so far. We’ve received questions from students tuning in from all over the world, including from as far as Egypt, Pakistan and Sweden. Check out the hashtag on Twitter to view some of the questions (search #CChangouts).

Obviously, choosing a college is a big decision. Our hope is that you will use these Hangouts as a resource to make an informed decision.

Scholarship Saturday: Scholarships for Jewish and Christian Students

In the spirit of the religious holidays of Passover and Easter that are being celebrated this week, Student Advisor has published scholarship lists for both Jewish and Christian students. Check out our free scholarship app to see more like these:

JVS Scholarship Fund

This fund is available to Jewish undergraduate and graduate students who are at least 16 years of age and planning to enroll full-time at an approved college or vocational school in the U.S.

Stephen C. and H. Max Ammerman Memorial GU Scholarship

In the spring of 1972, the Ammerman family established a scholarship in tribute to their son, Stephen C. Ammerman, who was killed in Thailand in February 1972. The scholarship was renamed in 1989 to honor also the memory of Stephen's father, the late H. Max Ammerman. Scholarships are awarded to students in each of the undergraduate schools who demonstrate financial need for Georgetown scholarship aid, with preference in selection to students with an interest in Asian affairs or languages, or Judaic traditions, or who are from Washington, D.C.

Italian Catholic Federation Scholarships

These scholarships are for Roman Catholic students of Italian descent who reside in Arizona, California, Illinois and Nevada.

Faith & Education Scholarship Fund

This scholarship fund is dedicated to developing leaders within the Churches of Christ faith tradition who are committed to serving both their church and their community.
