150 Word Abstracts are invited from undergraduate and graduate students for 15-minute presentations including, but not limited to, relationships between and among language, linguistics, and their many applications:

natural and artificial languages
indigenous languages
extinct and endangered languages
American Sign Language
speech pathology and hearing sciences
language and cognition
theoretical and applied linguistics
structural, semantic, or phonological analyses
comparative grammars
discourse/text analyses
applications in pedagogy
applications in rhetoric, the arts, literature, and the humanities
applications in academic, cultural, and sociological constructs

Students whose abstracts are accepted will receive with their paid registration a ticket to the conference luncheon, an event t-shirt and tote bag, and access to all conference events, including the keynote address.

Presentations may be readings or visual presentations, such as PowerPoint or handouts. Please note: All PowerPoint presentations must be PC compatible. No poster presentations will be accepted. Authors must currently be undergraduate or graduate students who are enrolled in at least three credit hours at an accredited college or university or must have graduated with a degree no earlier than December 2011.

Submissions should consist of a titled abstract of no more than 150 words in MS Word format. Please include at the top of the abstract the title of your presentation but no personal identifying information (such as name or institution); however, please include identifying information in the body of the email message.

Submissions should be sent as an attachment to langconf@gmail.com by the deadline of Monday, September 3, 2012. Late submissions are not guaranteed consideration for presentation. 4th Annual Shepherd University Sigma Tau Delta Literary Festival and Conference

The Shepherd University Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta invites submissions for our fourth annual “Literary Festival and Conference,” October 13, 2012. Planned events include:

• Conference panels featuring student papers on all subjects related to English studies
• Workshop on creative writing led by a professionals in the field
• Poetry/fiction readings
• Pre-Conference event with Shepherd faculty.

Papers written for undergraduate courses on any subject related to English studies are eligible for consideration. All critical presentations should be about 15 minutes long (about 8 pages). Creative presentations should be about 10 minutes long. Presenters are encouraged to bring supplementary materials (handouts, power points, etc) to help engage their audience; however these materials are not required.

Membership in Sigma Tau Delta is NOT required to submit. Recent grads are welcome to submit works that were completed for an undergraduate course.

What is a Roundtable?

Ever since submissions opened for the 2012 Sigma Tau Delta International Convention, many people have been asking, “What happened to panel submissions, and what are these new roundtables?” Roundtables are the same thing as what used to be called “panels.” They have simply been renamed to help clarify their purpose.

At many other academic conferences, the term “panel” refers to a group of papers presented at the same time in the same room. At our conventions, these are called paper sessions. Panels at our conventions were not for papers but for topic discussions. But many people were confused. So, this year panels have been re-branded to better reflect what they were always supposed to be: roundtable discussions.

Roundtables are not the place to present papers, even if a chapter has 4 or 5 papers on the same topic. Roundtables are a way for people to share their expertise or experience and then to facilitate a dialogue with the audience members.

Roundtables can be presented by one chapter, or, even better, by members of several chapters working together. For example, a roundtable could be made up of all the officers from one chapter talking about their experiences publishing a journal, or it could be the chief editors of four different chapter journals comparing notes.

The people submitting the roundtable should be prepared to answer in-depth questions about a particular topic and to stimulate conversation by asking thought-provoking questions of the audience and to invite the audience members to contribute to the discussion. Roundtables might start off with a short presentation, but the main goal is not to give a one-sided presentation. It is to encourage engaged and productive discussion and collaboration between the presenters and the audience.

Roundtables are evaluated separately from papers, so members are eligible to submit a roundtable proposal even if they have already submitted two works (critical paper or creative work) as well. As a result of fewer than usual presentation rooms in our 2012 hotel, competition will be fierce for getting a roundtable proposal accepted. So it is imperative that you read the instructions closely. They can be found at http://www.englishconvention.org/sigmatd/conv/roundtables.html

One other thing that is different is that, starting this year, roundtable submissions require both a short abstract and a longer description of the topic. So don’t wait until the last minute. Make sure you know exactly what you want to talk about and why you think it would be a good addition to the convention program.

Special consideration will be given to roundtables that discuss the common reader and to roundtables that involve members of more than one chapter, so those are some things to keep in mind if you want to give your proposal that extra push.

Roundtables are always interesting and engaging, and I look forward to seeing what great ideas people come up with this year. If you haven’t done it already, start talking to your friends about creating a roundtable submission today. The deadline is November 1, 11:59 p.m.

All student members of Sigma Tau Delta are invited to submit papers for the upcoming SW regional conference. We hope to offer sessions in the creative writing of short fiction, poetry, and non-fiction AND in the critical analysis of literature of all kinds (including non-print media such as film, TV, and videogames). Your essay does not have to address the conference theme in order to qualify for presentation.

Everyone who submits papers will receive additional information about schedules, lodging, dining options, and conference activities.

The 2012 edition will be electronic and is open to original poetry, artwork and (NEW this year) flash fiction from members of Sigma Tau Delta's Midwestern Region. Contributors are welcome to submit up to three entries from each category. If submitting multiple entries, each must be sent as a separate email.

Poetry Submissions:

* Must be 12 point, Times New Roman font
* Must be submitted as a Word document (.doc or .docx)
* Will be reviewed and juried by a panel of students and faculty based on criteria such as originality, style and concept

Artwork Submissions:

* May include color or B&W photography or original artwork
* Must be submitted as a .jpg or similar format

Flash Fiction Submissions:

* Must be 12 point, Times New Roman font
* Must be submitted as a Word document (.doc or .docx)
* Must not exceed 750 words in length
* Will be reviewed and juried by a panel of students and faculty based on criteria such as originality, style and concept

All Submissions:

* Must be previously unpublished
* Must be free from identifying information BUT must be accompanied by an email note including:

Hello Sigma Tau Delta Leaders!

I hope you are enjoying a wonderful summer. This is Sarah Faulkner, Sigma Tau Delta’s Student Representative for the Far Western Region. It is my responsibility and pleasure to be of any and all assistance to the Far Western chapters, including organizing regional events, preparing publications, and this year, assisting with a regional conference!

All chapters in the Far Western Region are invited to Pilgrimage West, Sigma Tau Delta’s Far Western Conference hosted by Chapman University in Orange, CA, November 12, 2011.

Call for Papers! Please submit a critical and/or creative piece on any topic. Submissions are limited to one per category, per person. We particularly welcome articles, papers, or creative pieces focusing on the West, or on Natasha Trethewey, author of the 2012 International Convention’s Common Reader, Bellocq’s Ophelia. Submit papers by September 15, 2011 to sigmatd.fw@gmail.com. You will be notified if your paper has been accepted by October 1, 2011.

Along with panels for readings, the conference will also offer leadership roundtable discussions. The Plenary Speaker will be Dr. Anna Leahy, an expert on Natasha Trethewey,
