UW-Superior's Bucket List in the Works!

Do you have a favorite activity to do in the Twin Ports area? Or a favorite event/place to go on campus?

Well Student Involvement is looking for your input! We are trying to put together a
Bucket List as a way to promote all there is to do both on and off campus.

Here is what we ask of you:

Think of any activities that you just love to do. Some categories to help guide you are
restaurants you love to eat at, stores you like to shop at, on campus events you
like attending, on campus resources you love to utilize, or any other on and off
campus activities you enjoy that you would like to share.
Email Student Involvement with these ideas. Please put UW-Superior's Bucket
List in the subject line.

We are working on having this available to students this fall, so keep your eyes open
to see the final product then.

Recruiting Potential Student Org Advisors

UW-Superior has over 50 student organizations that require an active UWS faculty or staff advisor. Many times students have a hard time finding an advisor for their organization.

Student Involvement is creating a database of potential student organization advisors, so we can better assist our organizations during the recognition process. If you are interested in becoming an active advisor, please let us know which type of organizations or special interests you have. Come to Focus on French! See how French can expand your perspectives and help in your career. Find out where French is spoken in the world and discover the French-speaking cultures that have taken root. Would you like to study abroad in Paris? Come and find out about this faculty-led study abroad program--3 weeks/2 credits. The Focus on French event will take place:

Community Science Night Friday

students, faculty, community organizations, and guess

Relay For Life 2013

Colleges Against Cancer (CAC) will be hosting Relay For Life again this year. It will begin at 6pm on Friday, April 12th in the Marcovich Wellness Center, with an opening ceremony, and conclude at 1am Saturday morning, with a closing ceremony. This year's theme is "It's our party...cancer is NOT invited."

This is CAC's biggest fundraiser of the year to help fight back against cancer. It is FREE to all, but if you would like to sponsor a team or donate while you are there that would be great!

There are multiple fun activities for all to take part in, including pin the tail on the donkey, grab bag, frozen t-shirt contest and much more.

Please join us in the fight against cancer and celebrating more birthdays!

UW-Superior Rifle Team Finishes 8th in the Nation after Intercollegiate Rifle Championships and Successful Season

It was their inaugural season in the competition that was held at Fort Benning
on the United States Army Marksmanship Unit's ranges in Georgia over the weekend of March 15-17.

Each season only the top ten club teams in the country are invited to the
Intercollegiate National Championship after regional qualifying tournaments held
in several locations across the country. The UW-Superior Rifle Team shot their
qualifying score in February at North Dakota State University. The qualifying
tournament and National Championships are shot in both Air Rifle and .22
caliber Smallbore Rifle, and the scores from the two are added together for an
aggregate total for rankings. UWS entered the National Championship ranked 8th
in the country in Air Rifle, and 7^th in the country in .22 Smallbore.
The UW-Superior team was represented at the national championship by team
members Tiffany Jones, Crystal Jarve, Zack Bauer and Ariel Johnson. Shooters
Zach Bauer and Ariel Johnson were shooting as alternates for the team for
shooters Ian Stone and Spencer Miller who could not make the trip to Nationals.

Chad Danielson is the UW-Superior Shooting Sports Coordinator / Range Director
and was thrilled with how the team did in their first year of competitive
shooting, "It was awesome," he said. "Most everybody on this team comes at it
with no formal training in shooting." But safety is the first topic the team
learns according to Danielson, who has been shooting at the UW-Superior range
since he was 11 years-old. He even competed himself in the junior program that
the community is also involved in that has won numerous state and national
championships. Danielson is also a Campus Security officer on the UW-Superior
campus and has been for the past dozen years.

Saturday March 16 saw teams compete in the Air Rifle stage of the championship
and UW-Superior shooters Tiffany Jones, and Crystal Jarve led the team with
scores of 530 and 472 out of a possible 600. After the Saturday competition
concluded shooters and coaches attended a marksmanship clinic hosted by Army
Marksmanship Unit International Rifle shooters that included 2012 Olympic Team
shooter Sergeant First Class Jason
Parker.

UW-Superior junior Crystal Jarve said that she will never forget her first trip to the event and learning from an experienced shooter, "Meeting an Olympic shooter was so amazing. He not only is an amazing shooter he also is a very nice person. Very charismatic and he just wanted us to do well. Also the Army Marksmanship Unit was a very large part of the
tournament. While we were there they put on a class for all of the competitors
and they provided a lot of great tips."

Sunday March 17 was the .22 Smallbore portion of the championship held on the
Army Marksmanship Unit's outdoor 50 meter range. Again the team was led in score
by senior Tiffany Jones who shot 499 out of the possible 600, and Zach Bauer who
shot a career best 464.

After the two days of competition against schools in attendance such as
University of Michigan, Clemson, Penn State, and Purdue, and the air rifle
scores and .22 smallbore scores were added for overall aggregate totals,
the UW-Superior Rifle Team maintained an 8^th overall national team
ranking out of 10 teams.

Jarve had no formal training before joining the team and was thrilled to
compete, she added, "It was amazing. All of the people involved in putting on the tournament were all very nice and helping. They were always willing to give advice. It didn't matter to me this year if we did well or not, this was our first year going to nationals
and I just wanted to get a feel for it."

UW-Superior shooters in attendance at this seasons championships are already
looking forward to next season and always looking for more students to join the
program which runs from September through December. Jarve is already one of
those looking ahead to next year, "It was a lot of fun representing UW-Superior at nationals. We had never gone before and there was a team from UW-Oshkosh there as well and it was a lot of friendly competition. I can't wait to do it again next year and come home with a few trophies."

Colleges Against Cancer is in the Spotlight!

"Colleges Against Cancer strives to provide information about cancer awareness and prevention through social programming and awareness events."

The members of Colleges Against Cancer joined for various reasons. "CAC gives students an opportunity to make a difference and help fight against cancer," Shannon Baumann, member of CAC.

Molly Heintz, member of CAC, summarizes the groups reason by simply saying, "Cancer has changed all of our lives, in one way or another, and that drives us to make a change."

Everyone at some point in their lives is impacted by cancer or know someone who is going through the struggles. CAC helps support the American Cancer Society by fundraising to provide cancer patients with resources during their treatments.

CAC's biggest event of the year is Relay for Life. This year Relay is on April 12th from 6pm-1am. To sign up a team go to www.relayforlife.org/superiorwi.

If you're creating a team please put UWS before your real team name (ex UWS Michelle's Team).

CAC meets every Thursday at 7pm in the Yellowjacket Union room 153. Consider going to their meetings so you can join the fight against cancer.

Marah in the Mainsail Concert

Hailing from the Twin Cities, Marah in the Mainsail started in 2010 when a
couple of kids wanted to try and make some music together. They've changed a lot
over the years, in their sound, style and member lineup. But today, they're a 5
piece, hard hitting, dirty folk band with unique instrumentation and a lot of
grit to their sound.

Black Student Union is in the Spotlight!!

Black Student Union (BSU)'s mission is "to bring knowledge to the campus and community about African/African American culture."

According to Terra Brister, Public Relations Director of BSU, "Black Student Union is just simply a wonderful group to meet new people and make friends, regardless of a person's race." This student organization welcomes everyone
to participate, regardless of age, sex, or race.

BSU meets once a month, and in the past has tended to meet in the Multicultural Center. However, this year they are mixing things up a little and utilizing the different meeting areas for student organizations. Keep an eye out for information about their next meeting.

Hosting many events during the school year, BSU likes to entertain all people on campus. Their biggest month to hold events is February, because it is Black History month. Some events they have coming up include a reenactment show of Zora Neale Huston's life on February 21^st at 6:00pm in the Yellowjacket Union Atrium. Also their biggest event of the year is their Soul Food Dinner on
February 23^rd at 5:00pm in the Yellowjacket Union Great Room. These events are fun for all and can also be educational.

"I Got A Story To Tell-The Life of Zora Neale Hurston."

On Thursday, February21, 2013 Black Student Union will be hosting a woman show called "I Got A Story To Tell-The Life of Zora Neale Hurston." The
performance will be held in the Yellowjacket Union (Yu Atrium) and it starts at
6 o'clock pm.

It is a one hour show of the reenactment of Zora Neale Hurston's
life. Hurston is a strong black woman that had no problem speaking her mind and
had a passion in writing. Some of her known novels/short stories are
"Mules and Men," "Their Eyes Were Watching God," and
"Seraph on the Suwanee."

Please come and bring a friend to have a sneak preview into Zora Neale
Hurston's life.

The Superior Alliance of Gamers and Associates in the Spotlight

"Bring forth Mjølner, we need to start the meeting," may be a saying you hear at the beginning of The Superior Alliance of Gamers and Associates, or SAGA, meetings.

This organization meets every Tuesday at 11:30am in the Yellowjacket Union, room 153. During their meeting they work towards their mission of being "dedicated to providing varied recreational alternatives to all University of Wisconsin - Superior students in a relaxing and socially rewarding atmosphere. " Also during their meetings, they just love to sit around and discuss various video games and be relaxed.

Their biggest event of the year, SOUPCON, is coming up on February 16^th, 2013. During this event there will be card tournaments and all sorts of fun gaming activities. In the evening, they will be hosting a 'Greek Dance' to close the event. Besides SOUPCON, this great organization hosts game nights throughout the entire year.

If this organization sounds like something you would enjoy being a part of, or SOUPCON sparks your interest, stop by room 153 in the Yellowjacket Union on a Tuesday morning at 11:30am and see what they are all about. Or you could even just attend a game night or their big event SOUPCON in a couple of weeks.
