Avon Healthy Relationship College Program

The Avon Foundation for Women has announced a Request for Proposals for its m.powerment by mark Healthy Relationship College Program.

Now in its second year, the program is open to nonprofit college and university organizations in the United States.

Eligible organizations may apply for funding for programs that deal with dating abuse, sexual assault, and stalking prevention and awareness, including campus-wide outreach events, trainings, and/or workshops; peer education programs to increase the number of student ambassadors; awareness materials, including resource guides, Web site pages, posters, cards, and buttons; and video or print PSAs or short films.

The program should emphasize awareness and prevention through education. Funded programs should be able to provide a minimum of four on-campus outreach events, trainings, or workshops to be completed in the one-year grant period and report on numbers served at these programs; provide preventive education on issues of dating abuse, sexual assault, and stalking and promote healthy relationships; provide resources and referrals to the student population about community-based domestic violence agencies and advocates; and develop or expand data collection and analyses of their program's reach and impact to demonstrate sustainability and garner additional program support.

High School Equivalency Program

The purposes of High School Equivalency Program (HEP) are to help migrant and seasonal farmworkers and members of their immediate family: (1) Obtain a general education diploma (GED) that meets the guidelines for high school equivalency established by the State in which the HEP project is conducted, and (2) gain employment or be placed in an institution of higher education (IHE) or other post-secondary education or training.

College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP)

Wyss Fellowship Program

The Wyss Foundation, a private charitable foundation dedicated to land conservation in the InterMountain west, is accepting proposals for its 2011 fellowship program.

Nonprofit organizations working on land conservation issues in eastern Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico are encouraged to apply to host a fellow.

The two-year fellowship program is designed to provide training and campaign experience for future conservation leaders. Sponsoring organizations contribute staff time to mentor and monitor the fellow's work and cover overhead expenses as well as 20 percent of the fellow's salary and benefits. The Wyss Foundation will provide host organizations with a grant for project expenses and travel as well as the remaining 80 percent of the fellow's salary and benefits.

Host organizations are responsible for selecting and hiring the fellow in consultation with foundation staff. Current employees of the sponsoring organization are not eligible for the program.

NASA Undergraduate Opportunity

NASA is offering undergraduate students an opportunity to test an experiment in weightless science as part of the agency's Reduced Gravity Education Flight Program. Proposals are due by Oct. 27.

The program, managed by the Johnson Space Flight Center in Houston, provides aspiring explorers a chance to propose, design and fabricate a reduced gravity experiment. Selected teams will get to test and evaluate their experiment aboard a microgravity aircraft. The specially modified jet aircraft flies approximately 30 roller-coaster-like climbs and dips to produce periods of micro and hyper-gravity, ranging from weightlessness to three times the force of Earth's gravity.

"This project gives students a head start in preparing for future ventures by allowing them to do hands-on research and engineering in a truly reduced gravity laboratory," Program Manager Douglas Goforth said.

Interested teams also should submit a letter of intent by Sept. 22. This step is optional, but serves as an introductory notice that a team plans to submit a proposal for the competition. All applicants must be U.S. citizens. Full-time students must be at least 18 years old.

NASA will announce the selected participants on Dec. 8. The actual flights will take place in summer 2011. Selected teams may invite a full-time, accredited journalist to fly with them and document the experiment and gravity-defying experience.

With this program, NASA continues its tradition of investing in the nation's education programs with the goal of strengthening the future workforce.

Open Meadows Foundation Grants to Benefit Women & Girls

Open Meadows offers grants of up to $2,000 for projects that are designed and implemented by women and girls; reflect the diversity of the community served by the project in both its leadership and organization; promote building community power; promote gender, racial, social, economic, and/or environmental justice; and have limited financial access or have encountered obstacles in their search for funding. The foundation funds projects that do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, national origin, gender identity and expression, sexual identity and expression, age, or ability.

Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education

The U.S. Department of Education announces the release of the Fund for the Improvement of Post-secondary Education (FIPSE). The Comprehensive Program supports innovative grants and cooperative agreements to improve postsecondary education. It supports reforms, innovations, and significant improvements of postsecondary education that respond to problems of national significance and serve as national models.

Invitational Priorities:

1. Centers of excellence for teacher preparation as described in section 242 of the HEA.

2. University sustainability initiatives as described in section 881 of HEA.

3. Rural development initiatives for rural-serving colleges and universities as described in section 861 of HEA.

4. Initiatives to assist highly qualified minorities and women to acquire doctoral degrees in fields where they are underrepresented as described in section 807 of HEA.

5. Modeling and simulation programs as described in section 891 of HEA.

6. Higher education consortia to design and offer interdisciplinary programs that focus on poverty and human capability as described in section 74(a)(11) of HEA.

7. Innovative postsecondary models to improve college matriculation and graduation rates, including activities to facilitate transfer of credits between institutions of higher education, alignment of curricula on a state or multi-state level between high schools and colleges and between two-year and four-year postsecondary programs, dual enrollment and articulation agreements and partnerships between high schools and community colleges, and partnerships between K-12 organizations and colleges for college pathway programs.

8. Activities to develop or enhance educational partnerships and cross-cultural cooperation between postsecondary educational institutions in the United States and similar institutions in Haiti.

BIC 4 GOOD Grant Program

Young people who have created a sustainable community action project, program, or organization that they want to expand are invited to apply for a BIC 4 GOOD Grant.

Administered by Do Something, the BIC 4 GOOD Grant program is designed to support established programs and organizations that have impact, proven sustainability, and measurable success. Competitive applicants must be self-driven, unique, and community-oriented.

The program will award ten grants of $2,000 each and one grand prize of $5,000.

Applicants must be 25 or under and a U.S. or Canadian citizen.

PGE Foundation Grants

The PGE Foundation is committed to improving the quality of life in Oregon by awarding grants in the areas of education, healthy families, and arts and culture. In the education category, the Foundation supports a wide range of programs, from preschool through college. In the healthy families category, the focus is on organizations that work to promote services in all areas of health, including hunger, mental health, homelessness, domestic violence, health care, etc. In the arts and culture category, the Foundation strives to educate all ages through the support of arts curriculum development as well as a variety of cultural performances.

Jenzabar Foundation Student Leadership Awards

The Jenzabar Foundation has opened the nomination process for its third annual Student Leadership Awards. The awards will honor ten student-led campus groups or activities that have made a significant impact serving others through service and philanthropic activities beyond their own higher education institutions. This year, the Jenzabar Foundation Student Leadership Awards will include a new Social Entrepreneur of the Year category, which will recognize one outstanding leader or organization committed to tackling social issues and promoting social entrepreneurship.

The Jenzabar Foundation is accepting submissions from institutions of higher education, nonprofit organizations, religious organizations, and self-nominations from students for their community service or humanitarian efforts during the current or previous academic year. A $5,000 grant is included with the recognition to support the student or group's future humanitarian endeavors.

Point Foundation (LBGT) Fellowships

Young Champions of Maternal Health

The Young Champions of Maternal Health Program will use the Changemakers online platform to identify 16 young leaders — called Young Champions — from around the world who will spend nine months working abroad on a maternal health project while being mentored by a seasoned Ashoka Fellow in the field of maternal health. The Corporation for National and Community Service (the Corporation) announces the anticipated availability of approximately $7.3 million to award new Learn and Serve America Higher Education grants. Grants will be awarded to an estimated seven to nine individual institutions ranging from approximately $85,000 to $200,000 annually for a project period of up to three years, and an estimated seven to eleven consortia ranging from approximately $200,000 to $500,000 for a project period up to three years.

Hearst Fellowship for Minority Students

The Aspen Institute Program on Philanthropy and Social Innovation (PSI) in Washington, D.C., offers the William Randolph Hearst Endowed Fellowship three times a year to introduce a diverse group of students to issues and challenges affecting philanthropy, social enterprise, nonprofit organizations, and other actors in the social sector.

The fellowship, which is based on academic excellence and need, is open to both undergraduate and graduate students of color. The Hearst Fellow serves as an intern with PSI and undertakes research, writing, logistical, and administrative support for PSI's leadership initiatives, public programs, and convenings. Recipients may arrange with their colleges or universities to receive academic credit for the experience.

Amount: A fellowship grant of approximately $2,000 will be awarded to the fall and spring fellows and approximately $4,000 will be awarded to the summer fellow.

Date due: The deadline for the spring 2010 fellowship is December 15, 2009; the deadline for the summer 2010 fellowship is March 15, 2010; and the deadline for the fall 2010 fellowship is July 15, 2010.

The student must be able to intern for twelve to fifteen weeks at the Washington, D.C., office of the Aspen Institute. Fall and spring internships will be part-time (fifteen to twenty hours a week) and summer internships will be full-time. All travel and housing costs must be covered by the student.

Islamic Society of North America Fellowship Program

The HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Islamic Society of North America Fellowship Program is designed to prepare Muslim graduate students to become effective and knowledgeable leaders of nonprofit organizations in North America. Fellows will be given the opportunity to study nonprofit management, fundraising, capacity development, and other relevant subjects. Western Union Foundation Family Scholarship Program

The Family Scholarship Program is intended to help two members of the same family move up the economic development ladder through education. Scholarships may be used for tuition for college/university education language acquisition classes, technical/skill training, and/or financial literacy. For example, one family member may request assistance to attend college and the other family member may request assistance to attend English as a Second Language courses.

The country of origin for at least one of the applicants must be outside the U.S. Applications must include educational providers for primary and secondary award recipients (must be two family members). Mazamas Graduate Student Research Grants

The Mazamas are dedicated to the exploration and preservation of mountain environments in the Pacific Northwest. Mazamas activities include gathering and disseminating scientific information concerning the natural features of mountains, forests, rivers, and lakes. Investigations of geologic features, biotic communities, and human endeavors pertaining to the enjoyment and safety of outdoor recreation are all relevant research topics.

Bringing Theory to Practice Demonstration Sites

The Association of American Colleges & Universities (AACU) has released new RFPs for the 2010 - 2012 grant cycle. Proposals are requested for projects during 2010-2012 that address one of the two following emphases: 1) Institutional efforts to examine, learn from and to make sustainable initiatives that foster the gains from the relationship between college students’ civic development and their psychosocial well-being; and 2) institutional ability to demonstrate the evaluation and sustainability of initiatives that address the increasing opportunities for students to have transformative educational experiences and for institutions to transform priorities and practices so as to make such experiences both expected and provided.

Demonstration Sites serve as a unique model for work consistent with BTtoP objectives. Bringing Theory to Practice Mini-Grants & Student Programming Grants

Mini-grants up to $2,500 are available to institutions initiating, or extending, conversations on their

campus that lead to the planning, implementation, or assessment of program or research projects directly related to the objectives of BTtoP and to either of the emphases for the 2010-2012 period.

Student programming grants are available under the Mini-grant category. These grants are available to student-led organizations or initiatives to develop programs for and by students that are consistent with the objectives of BTtoP.

Middle East Partnership Initiative "Tomorrow's Leaders Scholarships"

The Office of the Middle East Partnership Initiative (NEA/PI) announces an open competition for proposals to enhance and expand educational opportunities in the Middle East and North Africa. Successful applicants will provide an American-accredited education which will create a strong foundation for a cadre of civic-minded, intellectually able, and professionally skilled university students, well-prepared to become future community and business leaders.

Amount: $1,000,000

The Tomorrow’s Leaders Scholarships II (TLII) program will partner with host universities to provide four- to- five year academic matriculation and community service opportunities for secondary school graduates from the Middle East and North Africa who are from diverse and socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds and whose academic merit and other credentials would qualify them for admission to a university program of study but whose limited financial resources preclude attendance. The TLII project emphasizes the identification of highly motivated male and female students with demonstrated English language ability and leadership potential. Proposals under this priority area support full four- to- five year scholarships for at least 12 students per class cohort. Strategies to leverage program resources through more students and cost-sharing are strongly encouraged. In addition to proposing cost-sharing (see budget criteria), applicants should indicate how they will continue the project with non-USG funding upon completion of this project.
