Preparing for College Move-In

Preparing for your college move-in as a freshman is stressful. You may be thinking “What should I take to school? What kind of essentials do I need for dorm room living?” This college shopping list will help you create a moving plan and make shopping easier. Depending on your needs, you can adjust the list and buy what works for you.

Do your housing research

If you need to know dimensions and sizes of your room and furniture, search the housing page of your college’s website for more information.

Also, make sure you double check with your school about what items are and are not allowed. If you don’t, you will run the risk of bringing and relying on items that, in fact, aren’t allowed in your dorm room; items like space heater/ac unit, microwave, fridge, toaster, coffee pot/keurig, iron, and any other electric items that can cause a fire. Take extra precautions now to save you a potential headache situation later.

Talk to a current student

Reaching out to current college students is also a good idea, because they can share tips and tricks from their own experiences. They may know certain items that are “must-haves” and some items that are a “don’t bother.” Ultimately, this saves both time and hassle if you know what you need and don’t need beforehand. It’s also a great idea if you are limited on space!

Now that the policies are out the way, on to the fun stuff!!! First thing first, know how big your room is and what’s included. I mean, who doesn’t love free stuff (just make sure you return them in the condition received). Each dorm will come with the following items:

Navigating your Collegeboxes Signup: Step by Step

First of all thank you for choosing Collegeboxes to assist you in your storage and shipping needs! We hope this process is as simple and easy as possible, so we wanted to walk you through your sign up for our Summer Storage and Shipping service.

Once you're on our homepage, click Summer Storage and Shipping, select your school from the drop down bar and now hit the green button that says "SIGN UP".

Now that you've agreed to our terms and conditions, you can fill in all your personal account information; name, email, phone number, etc. making sure these are filled in and accurate is integral to our communication with you through this process.

Next, pickup information:

Enter your room number and your dorm
Select the date of your pickup
Select whether you need a supply kit
Your supply kit will automatically be shipped to your campus mail room

Select continue to move on to the billing page, you will complete that page by adding all your credit card information.
**You will not be charged for your supply kit unless you are within two weeks of pickup**

Lastly is your delivery information:

Select the season of delivery; i.e. Fall 2017
You may add your dorm and delivery date if you know it at your time of sign
Complete Sign Up

Creating Ship to School Labels

Your Ship to School Packages

Your Fedex pickup is in the next couple of days and your boxes are all packed, now it is time to create the labels!

Creating your labels

Before you sit down to create your labels make sure you have this information readily available for each of the items you are shipping.

Information you'll need:

What type of boxes
The size of the boxes
The weight of the boxes (enter the weight in pounds without any measurments ex: "40")
The amount of coverage you would like to add to the boxes
The description of items in each of the boxes

**Reminder: The description for each box is so important! It is for your reference as well as ours. If for any reason a label is damaged or has fallen off we use the description to locate the box. Helpful descriptions are: the color of the box, the brand of the box, clothing brands in the box, specific books.**

**Cost: Shipping cost is calculated by the size, weight and distance being shipped per item. You will be charged to the card on file in your account with us once your items have been picked up by Fedex.

IMPORTANT: Fedex will pickup items from you directly at your door if you are in a house or they can pickup items left outside the front door.

Items being picked up from a dorm, hotel, hostel, or apartment may not be picked up directly from your room address and may need to be taken to a central mailing center for your location.

What to Expect: Fedex Ship to School Pickup

Everything you need to know for Fedex pickups

You created your shipping account and now you're waiting on a Fedex pickup; but how should you prepare?

We want your Fedex pickup to go as smoothly as possible. In the days leading up to the pickup you should run through this checklist:

Confirm the date of your Fedex pickup; will you be available? If not, change the date online or contact us at 781-932-1113 for other options.

Fedex pickups typically run any time between 10am-6pm (the time frame can vary throughout different parts of the U. S.)

All items you're shipping should be in a box, suitcase or trunk.
Your shipping items should not exceed a weight of 60lbs.
Your trunk, box, or suitcase should be properly packed and taped.
Make sure each item has been added in your account, this is the only way to label your items.
Each shipping item should have a unique label securely attached.
The day before pickup check your account to find the Fedex pickup confirmation number.
On the day of pickup be sure your boxes are accessible for an easy transfer to Fedex.

If for any reason you are not available when Fedex arrives for pickup you can drop your items off at the nearest Fedex location OR you can give us a call at 781-932-1113 so we can figure out the best option for you.

Once your items have been picked up and shipped the card on your account will be charged AND you will be able to track your items with the tracking number that you can find in your account. You will be able to see the estimated arrival date for your items when the labels have been scanned by Fedex.

What items should you ship to school

Our ship to school service is designed to make your move to college simple and quick. Now deciding what you're going to send along before you arrive may not be as simple.

You'll want to start by organizing all the things you'll need leading up to the start of school. You don't want to pack away and send off to school any necessities. Now you can start setting aside any desk items, books, decorations, bedding or things to make your dorm feel like home to put in your ship to school boxes. All of those items plus clothes you know you won't be needing for the summer months are perfect to ship ahead of time.

It is also important to take note of all the things you WILL be needing while you're still at home or immediately when you arrive on campus. Any valuables (for example: ID or Passport), toiletries, makeup, medications, chargers, etc should stay with you. You also want to keep your favorite summer clothes with you so you're not scrambling through the boxes you shipped on your first day of class!

All of these things are important to consider when you're getting ready to use our ship to school service. Always double check to make sure the items you've packed aren't things you'll need prior to move in at your new school!

Need more than storage?

Our Ship to School service works to provide an easy, fast and reliable way to get your boxes to your new school!

Students can ship their boxes at any time over the summer to have them stored at a local U-Haul facility near their school until the free delivery date of their choice, on the delivery date a Collegeboxes representative will deliver the items to your door making for a seamless transition to your new home!

How it works:

Create an account online under our 'Ship to School' option for your school.

Choose to receive a supply kit or not, it is $39.99 (plus tax) and includes; 5 double-walled boxes (24"x16"x18"), roll of tape, marker, 5 zip ties, 10 label pouches.

Pack your boxes and print your shipping labels.

Fedex picks up your boxes on the date you have selected and ships them to a local U-Haul facility near your school. (You can track the items you've shipped with a tracking number provided in your account.)

Collegeboxes stores your items and then delivers them to your door on the free delivery date you have selected in your account. (You can add your delivery address at any time in your account.)

Do's & don'ts of shipping items

When you're getting ready for a move it is easy to forget the important details of shipping items! It is also easy to get carried away and start dumping items into boxes without keeping track of what all you are shipping.

We've created some Do's & Don'ts to make shipping easier!

Do:

1. Items MUST be boxed or in luggage, music cases or trunks.

2. Pack any loose, small items tightly between larger items to avoid shifting while in transit.

3. Secure any glassware with protective foam, newspaper, cardboard inserts, etc.

4. Tape the top and bottom of your box so it is completely shut.

5. Attach the label so it is securely taped to the side of the box.

Don't:

1. Boxes shouldn't be taped if each of the flaps cannot be folded down and closed together.

2. Labels should not be attached to fabrics with tape.

3. Breakable items should not be placed loosely in boxes.

4. No items should be left without proper labeling.

Do you have some items that just don't seem to fit into a conventional box size?

We're giving you a few options for some of those random items that are giving you trouble when you're packing.

Whether you have a large lamp that needs to be shipped home or you're wanting a little extra protection for your mirror over the summer you can find a box for it.

While these may be common items, there are lots of items you may want to ship that you can't with a normal box...items such as golf clubs, bats, or even a bike! You can also utilize these boxes when you are wanting to store items too.

Is your pickup day coming up?

With school coming to an end and move-out on your mind it is easy to forget about the little details of your pickup with Collegeboxes. To make the process as simple as possible we've created a list of things to prioritize in the days leading up to your pickup.

A day or two prior to pickup...

-Check your calendar, will you be available during the time-frame provided for your pickup date? If not, contact Collegeboxes at 781-932-1113.

-Is the contact phone number in your account correct?

-If you provided an alternate contact number, will they be available during the time you won't be?

-Have you decided what items you will be storing or shipping with us?

-Have you added each of the items to your Collegeboxes account?

-Have you printed and attached individual labels to each of your items, and is your customer ID and name written visible?

The day of pickup..

-Are your boxes packed, securely taped with a label attached?

-Will you be available for the duration of our service window, if not, have you contacted Collegeboxes with an alternate contact?

-Is your phone turned on, charged and accessible for when our movers contact you for pickups?

-Are you ready to let the movers in to your dorm building when they contact you for pickup?

Self Pickup From Storage

The best thing to do when you know you'll be picking up your items from a storage facility is to plan ahead! If you don't know the exact dates you'll be picking up, that is fine, it still helps to be prepared.

Whether you're picking up your items after only a month of storage or you're headed back to campus a week or two early we've got some tips to make the process easy and worry free!

You should:

-Make sure your items are correctly labeled

-Your name and ID written on multiple sides

-Add a label specifying early pickup

-Add note to movers, i.e : "Picking up June 4th"

-Let us know at least 72 hours ahead of time

Each of these steps will make it that much easier to identify and pull your items from storage at your convenience!

Packing up your closet!

The most daunting of all packing; packing your clothes.

It can be tough trying to decide the things you want to wear all summer long when you return home. You have to pack away an entire wardrobe of clothes you won't have until you return to school (if you don't live nearby), and most likely these items will be heavy winter items; coats, boots, snow gear, etc. things you can easily go without for the summer.

If you find yourself overwhelmed with clothes and shoes, maybe it is time to clean out your closet! It is the perfect time to shed some of the clothes you haven't been getting much use of, return things you've borrowed throughout the year and make room for new things to come!

Luckily, whether you're getting rid of items or not, our boxes can store your wardrobe plus much more. Into this one box we fit 7 pairs of jeans 10 t-shirts, 3 sweatshirts, bedding, sheets, towels and even a trash can. It is all about making use of your space.

What to do vs. What not to do

Make sure you fill the available space in your box up until where the crease is for each flap. Leaving this space allows for the flaps to come together so they can be securely taped shut.

Once you've packed up your clothes and taped the boxes you are one step closer to summer!

Assembling your Collegeboxes

#1 Stand box up with flaps open.

#2 Fold down smaller flaps first.

#3 Fold down remaining flaps to be taped.

#4 Secure flaps by running 2-3 strips of tape where the flaps come together.

#5 Flip it over.

#6 Fill it up.

How do you use your zip ties?

USING ZIP TIES

Try to make use of every item we include in our supply kits, especially the zip ties. Here are some examples of great uses for the zip ties.

Zip ties are especially great for securing labels to duffel bags, desk chairs, bikes or any other items where securing labels with tape just doesn't seem to work.

Another great use for a zip tie is bundling up all your loose cords, whether it be extra power strips, electronic chargers they work perfectly to keep them all together.

Get your packing out of the way, early!

Where to start?

Summer is sneaking up on you and your move out date is approaching fast so its time to start packing! It is best to start early, packing things you know you wont be needing again before your move out date.

A great way to start is to take a look through all the new and old things you have accumulated and ask yourself, do I need this? If this got left behind would I be upset?

Trying to de-clutter and prioritize all the stuff you have in your dorm will help you to save space and money when you're storing with us!

Take some of your winter clothes and accessories plus any miscellaneous decorative items (ex: picture frames or folders) anything you know you will not miss!

If you can, get some of the smaller items out of the way first putting them in smaller bags or containers that will fit inside your box that way everything will be organized when you return.

Make a list! Write down the items you will be adding into each box, that way when your items are returned to you you can easily find what you need.

If you do find yourself packing last minute, don't fear, and definitely don't just dump all your items into boxes. Try to stay organized, taking note of what items you put in each box,

Tackling packing

Having your boxes organized and ready for your Collegeboxes pick up is almost as important as keeping your desk clean and organized throughout the year!

We wanted to provide some quick tips for packing up your items.

You should:

Disperse your books and heavy desk items throughout boxes
Pack markers, pens, scissors, desk items, etc. in a small Ziploc rather than loosely in each box
Pack a large item such as a microwave with smaller, more flexible items like folders or notebooks
Take note of what items are in each box, that way come drop off you can find what you need faster

What to expect in your Supply Kit

For $39.99 + tax you'll receive:

You can utilize all of what we send you when you're packing up your dorm or apartment.

Utilize our double walled boxes offering twice the protection for items you're shipping or storing! Use the tape provided when you've finished packing up your box to make sure it is securely closed. If you have any unboxed items you'll be needing those zip ties to secure your label (inside your label pouch) to each item. Use the marker to write your name and Customer ID on all of the boxes. Label pouches will be used for any items you are storing or shipping, slide the label in and attach the pouch to the item.

Now that you've packed up your whole life and you're ready to either ship it all home, store it away or do a little of both it's time for you to label your boxes!Before you get too excited and print out any of the incorrect labels, make sure you have added the correct items in your account. No matter how hard you try if you have added a storage item when you're really shipping an item you won't be able to print the correct shipping label.

Both storage and shipping labels are created though the online Collegeboxes account.

Once printed, match the label to the corresponding item, affix the label on the top-left face of the box. Make sure the suitcase label is on the suitcase, and duffel bag label on the duffel bag. In addition to the label, write your name and customer ID number with a heavy marker on all sides and the top of the box. For items other than boxes, make sure the label is secure and visible. Don't forget to make good use of the zip ties that came in your Supply Kit. Zip ties work great in attaching labels pouches to fans, suitcases, etc. If you are shipping your boxes it is also good practice to write your shipping address on your box. This will help FedEx identify your box should your shipping label fall off during transit.
