Summer Accomplishments

Election Programming Calendar & Election Programming Committee
Students and student groups can appeal to the Election Programming Committee for funds to program around the upcoming Vice Presidential Debates and the 2008 Presidential Election.

University Initiative to Move Towards Reusable Water Bottles
The Administration is making a move to encourage the user of reusable water bottles by ending the sell of plastic water bottles on campus. Student Union looks to partner with this initiative to inform students about the plan, ease the transition, and explore other projects to improve sustainability on campus.

Chipotle Challenge
Student Union is partnering with Chipotle and the Athletics Department to help promote school pride and spirit. As a result of the partnership, Chipotle will sponsor several athletic events throughout the year as well as big campus events like WILD and the Vice Presidential Debate Viewing Party. The range of the partnership will include a free chipotle day for Wash. U. students, giving out free Chipotle burritos to the first students to show up a certain events, free chipotle redemption days for students that come to select chipotle sponsored events, and giving away burrito parties to winners of halftime contests during some athletic games. Schedule of Chipotle events TBA.

The Link
The Link is a brand new service offered by Student Union to connect student to life on campus. The Link is a campus events calendar, student group management system and personal organizer that will make it easy for students to get involved and know whatâ??s happening on campus. The Link is scheduled to launch on August 27th.

New SU Website
Student Union has redesigned its website, making it a better resource for students and student groups. The new SU website will provide better navigation, more news about whatâ??s happening at the University, blog posts from Student Union representatives, and online versions of forms that student groups commonly use. The new SU Website is scheduled to launch on September 1st.

Flash Drives for Freshman
This fall, Student Union will provide all freshmen with a 512mb flash drive. The drives will contain information that is commonly given to freshman in paper forms as well as links to websites that freshman commonly use. The flash drive initiative aims to reduce the amount of paper that Student Union uses in printing publications like Bearings, the unofficial student handbook, as well as helping freshman to smoothly transition to the University. The flash drives can also be used to backup files and transfer them from computer to computer.

Student Group Email
Sometime in the fall, Student Union is planning to switch student group email to Gmail provided by Google Apps. This will present student groups with the opportunity to utilize services like Google Docs, Google Chat, Gmail, and Google Calendar for their student group while maintaining their @su.wustl.edu email address. Hopefully this move will be the start of conversations on how to improve campus email for all undergraduate students.

GoCrossCampus (GXC)
This fall, GoCrossCampus (GXC) will be hosted on campus again. The game is an attempt to build school spirit through the residential areas by having different residential colleges battle to take over the WU campus.

Executive Committee/General Budget Process Restructuring
Student Union will be restructuring the general budget process along with redefining what Executive Committees are. We will be working with current executive committees to develop a definition that meets the needs of specialized groups on campus, but is also fair to every student group. In addition, we will be working with all student groups, student union representatives, and students from the student body to improve the process that is used to present and approve the general budget.

Student Union TV Show
This fall, Student Union will debut a new weekly tv show to air on WUTV and KWUR. The goal of the show is to keep the student body informed what Student Union and the Administration is doing. The show will also help to make Student Union representatives more approachable.

Danforth University Center Programming
A committee has been formed to allocate money to student groups that wish to do programming in the Danforth University Center.

Student Union Senate Restructuring
This summer, the leaders of the Student Union Senate have been working hard to improve the internal processes of the body to make it more efficient and more accountable to students.

Important Update About Residential Technology Services and Fees

In an effort to improve communication between students and various Information Technology departments on campus, Student Union has been diligently working with representatives from Student Technology Services(STS) and Network Telecommunication Systems(NTS) to provide transparent, and honest information about technology services, fees, and future plans to students. To that end, Andy Ortstadt has released a message to the student body that
1. details the Residential Technology fee increase for next semester,
2. highlights the services that come with the Residential Technology package,
3. gives a cost breakdown of the technology infrastructure maintenance and upgrades,
4. and discusses plans for incorporating the fee into Room & Board costs in the future.

You can continue to check http://sts.wustl.edu for the most up to date information regarding Residential Technology services. Andy Ortstadt will be working with some student groups and other mediums to get this message out to more students in the coming weeks. If you believe that any information has not been communicated, please contact me at trc@su.wustl.edu so that I can make sure that it is taken care of.

You can find Andy's message by going to http://sts.wustl.edu/files/STS_changes07.pdf

Lastly, the remainder of the carryforward will be set aside to furnish group spaces in the new University Center. If you have any questions about the carryforward please feel free to contact the Student Union Treasurer .

More Summer Appeals!

In addition to those posted above, the following appeals have been approved by the Executive Council of Student Union during Summer 2007:

Association of Black Students - Back to School Family Reunion, $700.00
Outing Club - Budget Appeal, $2,541.84
Washington Univ. Political Review - 3 Additional Issues, $3,841.76
Washington Univ. Traditional Karate - Speakers Meik & Diane Skoss, $800.00

The total amount allocated from the Appeals and Speakers account so far is $12,757.76 .

While we were not able to strictly adhere to our goal of $10,000 for the summer all appeals heard were time sensitive and the Student Union Executive Council feels will greatly benefit the undergraduate student population.
