That's 70 every day. The vast majority were men. Those figures do not make Japan's the highest suicide rate in the world in a developed nation. That dubious title belongs to South Korea. But it is still far, far higher than virtually all other wealthy countries. It is three times the suicide rate in the United Kingdom. Train tragedy The grim self-immolation of a 71-year-old man aboard a Japanese bullet train on Tuesday has once again rammed the issue back in to the headlines here. What drove a quiet, elderly man, to douse himself with fuel and set fire to it in a packed carriage on a speeding train? As he tipped the liquid over himself he is reported to have shooed away other passengers, telling them it was dangerous. Some said there were tears in his eyes as he did so. Now, as they start to dig in to his background, members of the Japanese media are turning up the tell-tale signs of a man on the edge. He lived alone and had no job. He spent his days collecting aluminium cans to sell for recycling. (Click Here for Full Article)   From www.cnsnews.com: The U.S. Army will drop its hand grenade competency requirement for graduation from basic training because getting recruits to pass it is taking “too much time” and they’re just not strong enough, Major General Malcolm Frost told reporters on Friday. Changes to the Army’s Basic Combat Training (BTC) will eliminate the current hand grenade proficiency standards as a requirement for graduation, Military.com reports: “The new BCT does, however, do away with hand grenade qualification and land navigation course qualification as graduation requirements.” Discussing the change with reporters, Maj. Gen. Frost explained that training recruits to pass the current requirement was taking too much time: "What we have found is it is taking far, far too much time. And although the policies are helping to reduce violence in the schools, it remains a problem in parts of the country, Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley said yesterday. "We know that zero-tolerance laws work," Mr. Riley said at a news conference in Washington, D.C. "Schools that have implemented zero-tolerance policies have seen fewer weapons in their classrooms and fewer crimes." Mr. Clinton signed a bill a year ago, known as the Gun-Free Schools Act, requiring that states adopt policies to expel for at least a year any student who brings a firearm to school. States would face loss of Federal money if they did not pass such policies within a year. Even though several states, and local entities, had such policies in place before the Federal law was enacted, Mr. Riley said the strong message from the President had helped to bolster other local efforts against violence in the schools. He said that in Dade County, Fla., which recently enacted an anti-gun policy, the number of guns seized in schools went down to 110 in the 1994-95 school year from 193 the previous year. In the Detroit public schools, 35 guns were seized in 1994-95, compared with 81 the year before. Mr. Riley, who spoke at the Fletcher Johnson Educational Center, a public school in southeast Washington, D.C., said that only three states did not yet have policies, but that all appeared headed in that direction. The heavy crowd in the city helps arms supplier escape security agencies’ attention, thereby providing them a safe entry and exit. The recoveries of fire arms made by the Delhi Police in the past four years give a disturbing picture. A total of 388 firearms have been seized till June 15 this year. While in 2015 and 2014, this number was at 431 and 868 respectively, a total of 700 and 586 firearms were recovered in 2013 and 2012 respectively. Massachusetts’ bump stock ban is a response to the October 1, 2017, Las Vegas shooting, wherein the devices were criminally to inflict harm. No bump stock crimes in the state of Massachusetts have been cited. Moreover, the Massachusetts’ bump stock ban also bans trigger cranks, although trigger cranks were not even used in the Las Vegas attack. The ban is based on language in a new spending bill containing sections directly referencing bump stocks and trigger cranks. Our state has long been a champion in the fight against gun violence, and today we take a step towards further cementing our reputation as a leader in smart, safe, and commonsense gun reform.” (Click Here for Full Article)   From www.thefirearmblog.com: The Gun Owners Action League (GOAL) based in Northborough, Massachusetts, recently uncovered a letter set to be sent from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security to all Massachusetts License To Carry (LTC) permit holders. The letter explains that “Retention of a prohibited item [bump stock or trigger crank] beyond the 90 day grace period will expose the owner to criminal prosecution”. The letter also states that possession is illegal even a private home. Essentially, residents are being forced to surrender bump stocks without exception. The new state law, set to take effect on 2/1/2018, bans “bump stocks” and “trigger crank” devices in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Although the letter has yet to be sent, it appears to indicate that property once legally owned prior to the passage of the new law, would become contraband and would need to be surrendered and destroyed without compensation. Andrew Meunier tells news outlets he let his dog out of his home about 11 p.m. Tuesday and spotted the 4-foot (1-meter) bear standing next to him when he stepped outside. He told the Collier County Sheriff's Department the dog ran back inside scared. Meunier said he struggled to get away and managed to get back through his front door. Four individuals with Goldstein were also robbed. According to the Chicago Tribune, there were a total of three robbery suspects. Those included a gunman and two accomplices, all “between 20 and 24 years old.” Goldstein was taking part in a photo shoot in Albany Park. The shoot was intended to capture him and the essence of the neighborhood. Campaign manager Robert Murphy said the campaign stop was part of an “in-the-neighborhood kind of” theme. The robbery suspects got away with cameras and cell phones, and Goldstein’s crew was shaken up but not harmed. Ironically, Chicago has long been an unsuccessful experiment in gun control. The city had a complete ban on handgun ownership from 1982 to 2010. This means criminals had handguns for the purposes of robberies, murders, and assaults, while law-abiding citizens were defenseless. And it’s gonna cost them millions. What does the law say? The Netzwerkdurchsetzungsgesetz (NetzDG) law says that hate speech that is flagged could be fined up to $60 million if it isn’t removed from a social media website after 24 hours. Who does it apply to? The NetzDG law affects social media companies with over 2 million users, which applies to YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and others. Breitbart News reported that the ammunition controls went into effect January 1, 2018. They bar out-of-state ammunition purchases and require that all in-state purchases be made from a licensed dealer. This shrinks the supply, which will inevitably drive up price. Moreover, they require that any ammunition purchased online be sent to a licensed in-state dealer, who will then charge a processing fee for the ammo, thereby driving the price up even further. This is all a prelude to the state’s January 1, 2019, goal of instituting point-of-sale background checks for ammunition purchases. Those sales will also carry a fee, ubiquitously to cover the cost of the background check. But the fee will drive the price of ammo even higher. Bruce Rauner (R) tweeted this week about how 33,000 people left Illinois for another state over the past year, continuing years of outmigration from the Land of Lincoln. With that tweet, the DGA is trying to make the public dumber. The DGA knows full well that Gov. Bruce Rauner doesn’t run his state. That would be House Speaker Mike Madigan (D), who has presided over the decline of a once great state during his 34 years as Speaker. By attempting to pin Illinois’ continued decline on Gov. Rauner, the DGA is either ignorant about how Illinois politics works, or they are lying. Most likely the latter, but either way it’s not good. The DGA wants to talk about the 33,000 people who have fled Speaker Mike Madigan’s Illinois over the last year. What they won’t be touting is the fact that during the administration of Gov. Pat Quinn (D), Rauner’s predecessor, 247,410 people on net left Illinois for the likes of North Carolina, Texas, Florida, Arizona, and other states that are better stewards of taxpayer dollars. Those 247,410 people who left during Gov. Quinn’s time in office, according to IRS migration data, took $13.7 billion with them to states that that are better run and have lower taxes. The DGA really doesn’t want to dive into interstate migration data, as it does not reflect well on their most prominent governors. Let’s start by looking at what has happened in California since Jerry Brown became governor again in January of 2011. Since Gov. Brown was sworn in, becoming the oldest governor in state history, 243,099 people have fled California on net for other states, taking $7.794 billion with them to states that don’t have such high taxes and onerous regulations that make housing unaffordable for middle class households. The top recipients of Golden State refugees last year were Texas and Nevada, two states that have zero income tax. California, meanwhile, levies the highest top marginal income tax rate in the nation. Policy, like elections, has consequences. The personal and corporate income tax hikes championed by Gov. Brown in 2012 have likely helped exacerbate the exodus of Californians. In a move that will further drive up the cost of living in one of the hardest states in which to get by, Gov. Brown approved an extension of the state cap & trade program earlier this year. This will hurt low and middle income households the hardest, who will face what is effectively a regressive tax hike in the form of higher gas prices and utility bills. The idea did was not born at the NYT, rather it is the result of various gun control groups working to reduce the number of guns in circulation in America. For example, NYT reports Connecticut’s New Haven Police Department did a buyback “in cooperation with RAWtools Inc., a gun safety program that specializes in breaking apart firearms and reforging gun barrels into safer things.” This opens the door for “prison inmate volunteers” to “transform surrendered weapons into gardening tools to be provided to schools so students can plant and harvest vegetables for soup kitchens.” Even a cursory glance at RAWTools website shows that the company believes Christians are commanded to be sitting ducks. They literally praise the idea of being a “soft target.” A post called, “Blessed are the Soft Targets,” rejects efforts to arm ushers and congregants to protect the weak and frail from attack. The post says, “From a Jesus lens, this doesn’t work.” It then goes on to say, “Faith communities, especially ones that follow Jesus, have a powerful opportunity to show an alternative to gun violence. My friend explains that he is working with a company that is producing pistol sights. He informs me that his research indicates that 3 Dot Sights outsell all other pistol sights, 10 to 1, in retail outlets. I hang up the phone depressed. 1145 Begin to work on serious thought piece regarding handgun sights and how to explain the benefits and detriments of certain types of sights. Summary: I have gone on record more than once that I am not a fan of 3 Dot Sights. That is, a front sight with a white (red, orange, yellow, etc) dot and a rear sight with two matching dots of the same size and color. Yes, some manufacturers will put a red dot up front and two white dots in the rear. Even worse. Yes, I fully understand the purpose of the 3 dot style of pistol sights. They are basic level simple, Kindergarten level if you will. The brand new pistol shooter is told, “Put the front sight dot between the two rear dots. Hold the pistol still and press the trigger.” What could be easier? Some proponents would say that 3 dot sights work instinctively with the human eyes and that it is a natural function to line up the three dots in a row. That is a dubious claim to be sure. If you discuss this situation with experienced firearms instructors, most will tell you that when the shooters are focusing on lining up the dots, their shots invariably impact low on the target. Just how low depends on the shooter, the gun, and the distance.
