HEC Montreal
Dissertation title: “Decision Support for Project Risk Management: A Three Essay Dissertation Proposal” (Advisor: Dr. Suzanne Rivard). The study takes a design science approach to propose a theory of a decision support system (DSS) for project risk management. The design of the DSS aims at addressing the interrelations between factors contributing to project risk. An attempt is made to synthesize the literature pertaining to project risk and risk management into artifacts to be used in the implementation of the DSS.

Research Project Title: “Solving ordinary differential equations application and performance” (Advisor: Dr. Peter Grogono). The purpose of the research project is to study performance of mathematical operations in software applications. Solving ordinary differential equations (ODE) is the main target to accomplish. Previous work in this field was done but there have not been intensive efforts to optimize performance. The research aims on designing an application that can solve general differential equations using certain algorithms (ODE solvers) and developing the system in different languages in order to find the best solution that maximizes the application’s performance. The outcome of the research is a framework for mathematical applications, a useful system that solves ordinary differential equations, and a performance study of the application.

WORKING PAPERS

Segregating Continuous Volatility from Jumps in Long-Run Risk Return Trade-Offs (job market paper)

We provide a multi-horizon characterization of the strength of the relationship between market realized variance components, namely continuous volatility and jump, and future market excess return. Building on quadratic variation theory, we find that continuous volatility is a key driver of medium/long-run risk-return trade-offs while jumps lack predictive power to explaining the time variation in medium/long-term excess return. We use inference methods that are robust to persistent predictor in a multi-horizon setup. Specifically, we show that rescaled versions of the usual test statistics converge to non-degenerate distributions in our local-to-unity framework. This study yields evidence supporting a proportional risk-return linkage when jumps are extracted from the quadratic variation activity.

Horizon effect in The Term Structure of Long-Run Risk Return Trade-Offs

We investigate the horizon effect in the long-run predictive relationship between market excess return and historical market variance. To this end, we derive the asymptotic joint distribution of the term structure of risk-return trade-offs and its corresponding covariance matrix. After accounting for short- and long-memory persistence in the market variance dynamics, we test whether the term structure of risk-return trade-offs is flat across horizons. We fail to obtain statistical evidence against the equality between slope coefficients from constrained risk-return regressions estimated at different horizons. Then, we propose a smoothed cross-horizon estimate for the trade-off intensity at the market level. Our findings bring additional insight into the estimation of the Intertemporal Capital Asset Pricing Model (ICAPM) coined by Merton (1973).

Strategic Asset Allocation Under Risk-Return Trade-Offs (in progress)

We explore how unveiling risk-return trade-offs at the monthly frequency translates into long term optimal portfolio mix. Therefore, we look at a Bayesian investor’s long-run optimal asset allocation when he is unaware of estimation risk and when he accounts for it. For an investor who believes in returns i.i.d.-ness, our findings match the results previously reported by Barberis (2000). However, when the investor agrees with returns forecastability where the conditioning information set is built upon past market variance, the optimal portfolio design is quite different from the outcome reported for dividend price ratio as returns’ predictor. Certainty equivalent utility loss for the regression-based model also provides useful insights into misspecification risk.

Luc Bres entered the Montreal universities joint Ph.D. program in January 2008 at HEC. He holds a top ten European Master in Management from Audencia Nantes in France. Previously he worked 2 years as a financial analyst in Germany and France for Hewlett-Packard, and as a consultant in several countries. He also holds a Research Master from Laval University, where he studied sociology and organizational theory. Within one year he had completed his Master thesis, and this experience deeply transformed him. One central question in Luc’s train of thought is the possibility of establishing common rules in a post-modern society, in an intentional and reflexive manner. In his Master thesis he studied the organization as a peculiar phenomenon of the postmodernity. His interests naturally lead him to the questions of sustainability and social responsibility.

He now shares his time between teaching, researching and consulting. He has designed and taught the introductory course in HEC’s graduate program on sustainable development and various other courses related to CSR and sustainable development. His Ph.D. research is focused on ISO 26000, a new type of standard that takes on the challenge of defining international common rules on Corporate Sustainable Development. Over the past few years he has performed several contracts within big and small organizations to reflect on their social and environmental strategy.
