by _controlfreak (Posted Mon May 28, 2012 4:52 pm)
Before I hijack the thread, I heartily agree with TimOBrien (my go-to guy when peepz start speculating nonsense about MOTU and Windows...) .

Anyway, I had been using an eSATA drive (via ExpressCard) for the last couple of years. I was basically forced into doing so: My particular MacBook Pro (Spring 2007) only supports 4GB of RAM. With such giant libraries as Trillian, LASS, and Komplete, my RAM would be quickly gobbled up. And it wouldn't be completely spat back out when I was through, either (a complaint I have about all PC platforms). In any event, streaming from a disk quickly became a necessity: Even on eSATA, "full" patches would take upwards of ten seconds to load into RAM.

I just replaced the hard drive in my MBP two months ago; the original 160GB 7200RPM drive had served me well but was simply too small, and starting to have one to many peculiar hiccups. Since I'd be cracking the case open anyway, I figured, what-the-hey, may as well drop another hard drive into the optical bay. Now I have no battery life. *AHEM* I meannn... Now I have two 750GB 7200RPM drives inside my 17" MBP. I love it. Not having to lug around the eSATA card and drive is lovely. Plus, the 2nd internal HD is much faster than the eSATA drive. eSATA is only for backups, which are now a breeze.

So, the point... as Tim pointed out, it doesn't matter too much what comes from where, since it's all going to RAM anyway. Sure, it's nice to keep the OS and samples separate, but wasn't the point of your MacBook to have something portable, without the extra gobbledygook tagging along? If you're stressed about performance, why not plan to upgrade your internal drive(s), which will give you the best performance and -- whad'ya'know -- portability.

TimOBrien wrote:It might take an extra second to load a patch, but so what?

"BUT I WANT IT NOW!!!" "One way or another, I WILL turn this computer into an arranger/ROMpler!"

(It says i can update to v. 6.5 for free when i install).

I plan on running the 64 bit version and just using 64 bit plug ins. I'm going to upgrade my BFD drums v1.5 to the latest BFD2 which apparently can be run as a 64 bit VST.

Looking at whats in the box, I'm hopeful that most of my 64 bit needs will be covered by cubase 6 plug ins and BFD2..I may need a better sampler for pianos/strings etc at some point...

by ecc83 (Posted Mon May 28, 2012 1:56 am)
You CAN do without a good deal of hardware.
You must have at least a digital to analogue converter of course but there is one built into every desk and laptop, commonly called OnBoardSound and ranges in quality from B awful to really quite good as in the HP i3 laptop I am presently typing on (because 750G hdds take for fekkin' EVER to CHKDISK!).

You need to listen of course and by far the cheapest way is headphones (aka cans), Sennheiser HD202s are not at all bad at £15 here. But best if you can to buy a small mixer. These can be had from $50new and I dare say 1/2 that second hand. Makes? Mackie, Soundcraft are good, Behringer,Tapco,Phonic not so good but even cheaper (the Berry Xenyx 802 has in fact given me 4 years sterling service and continues to do so amping mics in my garden. I have upgraded to an A&H ZED10).

Next you really need a keyboard if you are to playin music. Yes, you CAN input notes one at a time with a mouse, even use the PC keys as a virtual kbd but both methods are a slow PITA. Music software? DO NOT BUY ANYTHING! There is so much free stuff about that it is really pointless for the beginner since you have no idea of what you want or need. I suggest you download the free version of Samplitude Silver. Limited to 8tracks but simple enough to get you going. You can download trials of almost all the major softwares and try them for a month.

So, get Sam, get some cans, read The Guide and get cracking!

Dave.

They have been extremely ambiguous about this.. they do not especially talk about "non-personally identifying information" like Warden plus they stated that their advertisers may nicely collect information and details away from your PC when it's related in the direction of Internet. This could quite appreciably suggest something in any way and at any time, which consists of personally identifying details.

Users around the earth will shortly possess the ability to take advantage of PayPal to purchase something you wish away from your Blizzard Store, d3 items and it's no extended just limited to WOW Subscriptions.

There appears getting a PayPal / Battle.net area check, like what i experienced been predicting weeks ago.

The Battle.net sense of balance optimum restrict is $500.00 USD.

You can include cash in increments of $10.00, $20.00, $50.00 or $100.00. I've heard that was the inspiration for the song and that's how I think he got it to sound so natural but he is a programming genius.

if you had a sound file of a bouncing ball bearing or painstakingly made one from scratch from there you could process the ish out of it, convert it to midi or cv to trigger synths and drum machines, etc. you can also process the midi and/or cv information, etc

by dcwave (Posted Fri May 25, 2012 9:49 am)
I have V6 IIs and they are as quiet as the dead when calibrated @ -18dBfs = 0VU= 85dB cSPL - plenty loud to mix on, no hiss. It's only when I crank them so the music's at about 110dB spl that I can hear the faintest amount of hiss with no playback.

Are you sure its the KRKs and not your interface adding the noise?

by Dan #7 (Posted Thu May 24, 2012 12:05 pm)
Hello!

If you allow me, I wish to add a question here on this matter:

When I started out, 2 years ago reading tweak's awesome guide, I read about this matter and since then every gear I plugged into the same wall socket using power surge protectors or stabilizers. At that time "all my gear" included nothing but one small guitar amplifier, one notebook and one small interface. Now, "all my gear" includes lots of stuff and right now there are 11 pieces of gear plugged to the same wall socket. And I am right now adding to my rig two more pieces of gear that need power.

So I ask you:
Am I abusing or am I doing it right?
What types of connections and cables should be worried about? Only analogic audio cables or every cable? If should I worry only about analogic audio cables, I can already move some stuff to another outlet.
When you say "same circuitry" or "same path to ground" what do you mean? I've always considered it to mean the same power socket on the wall, but:
Are multiple wall outlets considered to be "same path" when they all respond to the same interrupter on the power box? In my home studio, every socket and every light turns off when I shut down one interrupter in the power box, and that doesn't turn off anything else than lights, power outlets and air conditioner inside my room.

Thanks!

by Dan #7 (Posted Thu May 24, 2012 10:21 am)
Hello my beloved friends. (I really love you, you guys helped me get started some years ago)

So... This thread is just a discussion on what could have been the issue with this connection I am gonna tell you about. I don't care about it anymore and don't care to find a solution, just proposing a healthy conversation: maybe I get to learn something new.

Okay, once upon a time (lol jk)... there was myself, about 2 years ago, doing one of my first jobs with audio (if not the very first). I just remember I connected one piece of gear to the other (I don't remember exactly, but I think it was my unbalanced TS 1/4 output on my POD HD500 through a unbalanced cable and into a pretty old (maybe damaged) mackie medium mixer). Well, the sound came out through the speakers with massive phase issue. I pulled the plug out just a little from the mixer's input (just the same way we usually do on inserts when we don't want to interrupt the dry signal from getting through) and MAGIC, the sound was now perfect.

At the time I thought it was an issue with incompatibility between unbalanced and balanced jacks. But now I don't know anymore what to think. Until a few weeks ago, I firmly refused to connect any unbalanced output into a balanced input (or the other way around). But these last weeks I noticed I was actually doing it over and over again when connecting my POD unbalanced into my interface. (You know when you don't even realize you're doing something then suddenly you do realize?) Well I always knew the TS output on the POD in unbalanced and the input on the saffire pro40 are all of them balanced but my brain just never matched those separate pieces of info.

Okay, sorry I have this issue I tend to write more than necessary.

PS: are you guys all still around? I mean aww-de-oh, bluebear, massivemastering... I've been away for quite a while, heh. I do sometimes visit to see if can I help someone out but I feel the presence of those big guys and I feel powerless. OK, nevermind this is topic for the cafe.
