"Top of the Morning"

This is from my abstract landscape series. It sold to a collector in Galway, Ireland and I love that this is where it is now and where it will always remain because I was inspired to paint it after one of my many trip to the Irish Isles. I really miss traveling and I really REALLY miss all my dear friends and acquaintances from Galway. Hope you are all well.

It is a mixed media acrylic, pencil and china crayon. 20x20 on canvas

2021! I am happy you are here!

2021-01-19T14:45:00.000-07:00

Back in the studio for some Oil painting! I have been painting most days in this new year and I am thrilled about it! It has been wonderful to be back in the Studio. I organized my space, cleaned up my pallette and purchased some new brushes. I am rearranging my schedule on my calendar so that I can make space to "show up" and paint a ton! Here is a little painting I did and it has brought me so much joy. I am very happy with the brush strokes showing themselves confidently on my canvas. You see, I really do buy into the mindset that if you let go, then the painting comes alive. I was able to let go here and that is why I like this piece so much. Will be available for purchase on my website shortly after it drys. I will have reservations parting with it, but my new philosophy is to share this happiness out into the world.

A friend who is now an American

2016-01-21T12:53:00.000-07:00

My dear friend has become an American Citizen! What an amazing story his wife told about his coming to America with his Scottish Mother and Father when he was 2 years old. and what they all went through to live here. The opportunities for work and a different life for their family was their motivation. I was so touched by the passion they described in their story. I made this illustration as a gift to him to celebrate this impactful and significant day.

Learning Adobe Illustrator

2015-09-20T14:13:00.000-06:00

Recently, I have learning how to draw and design graphics in Adobe Illustrator. Graphic design was my first priority in study at school in my college days. I could cut and paste, and there you have it, it was a long time ago. But over the years, though I finished school with a degree in Painting and drawing, I have never left my desire to design. SO an opportunity came up when I was surfing the web and found Minted.com. If you don't know about it, Minted is a stationery company that uses crowdsourcing to find artists for their designs. Artists display their digital work to be judged by their peers and anyone who will vote on the platform. I was overwhelmed with the idea that I too could possibly design cards for a company and/or for my own business. I went to a meet-up and met some other minted artists who shared with me their own journeys and how they learned to apply themselves in this field. A really nice person told me about Lynda.com. This led to me finding SKILLSHARE and CREATIVELIVE and numerous other sites. I have been taking classes though these sites and have become a member of the Adobe Creative Cloud. Here I have access on my computer to create design, illustrate and make graphics for print and production of other products, by using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and other applications.

Madison is my daughter and I made this for her.

Here is an example of something I completed for a course I took over at SKILLSHARE. The class is called Learn to Draw Digitally, Create Cute Drawings using Basic Shapes. This class is taught by Shelley Sequinot. She has a company called Iminkpressed. This class is wonderful and teaches you great steps to drawing in Adobe Illustrator.

I am so excited to share this with you. I have been waiting for years for this journey of mine in the arts to make sense. It feels right to be learning all this. I feel really lucky to have found that all this available online.

Painting again, after some time spent reflecting

2015-07-19T12:15:00.001-06:00

II have been painting again after a "taking time off" period. I fell into this sadness and loss of enthusiasm for my art. I was not "feeling it" and the doubt I was experiencing was enormous. I then experienced all this out pouring of support and love from people who intuitively knew I needed them. It was surreal, I would get random phone calls and emails/texts and invites to chat. That was the push (hug) I needed to get my act together. It has been so incredibly uplifting, (while weird in the best way possible), and so very very necessary. If you were one of these people who reached out to me, I thank you. My husband, Tim has especially given me his support. I am proud to call him my best friend and biggest fan, as I am his.

Here are my latest works:

Type, old wooden type

2015-03-27T21:39:00.000-06:00

I love wooden block type! I don't know how to articulate exactly why. Perhaps in another life I was an apprentice to an owner of a printshop in England, or perhaps I just like the smell of old ink, or maybe it is just me today. I lean towards typography, and I like to see, hold and feel the letters. I bought a huge lot of wooden type form someone in England when I lived there for quite a lot of money. I have it in a box stored in the attic and I just like knowing that it is there for me to have access to when I want it. Here are some that I keep close, I have them on display and with the rest, what will I do? I am not sure yet, but it is a comfort for me to have them.

Big City Studio

2015-03-13T12:59:00.000-06:00

Here is my new Studio. It is at a place called Prism Workspaces in Denver. Studios are roomy, the facility is very professional and the atmosphere is great. I have already completed a few projects and am thrilled to be here at work in my new space.

Commissions

2014-03-17T13:18:00.000-06:00

Here is an example of a recent commission I did for a client. It was accomplished in my studio from a photograph that had captured a sweet moment in time of a father and daughter out for a walk. I loved working on this painting because I could recognize and feel the emotion of this little girl holding her Dad's larger hand that wrapped her safely in his care.

Commissions can be accomplished from most photographs, though I prefer to select from a choice of 3 or more to see which has the best composition potential. I am offering to work on a choice of sizes on either stretched canvas or Gesso boards.

If you are interested in my price list for commissions, please refer to my website and/or email me at MiaHinchey@me.com

Keep in mind that there is usually a time investment to consider, so the earlier you contact me the better if it is for a specific date.

Daily Painting Nearly

2014-03-11T22:11:00.002-06:00

I have painted this in my new art studio. I titled this Little Green Apples. I named it after I found myself humming an old tune, "hmmmm hmmm hmmmm little green apples", a song I seem to remember coming from my parents stereo. I seem to recall it was performed by Englebirk Humperdink. Now, that might not be correct spelling of his fabulous name, but that is how the little girl (me) pronounced it all those years ago. I even named my little live turtle after him. Wow, I was silly.

This studio space is nearly fully functioning the way I need it to. Just a few more things to invest in to really make it perfect. I am so pleased to have it. So my goal is to work nearly daily now. Perhaps I will look for good ol Humperdink on iTunes Radio or Pandora to play In the background while I paint. Wonder if they even would have that good old stuff. Will update you on that.

The stage is set

2014-02-28T21:51:00.001-07:00

I finally got to the hardware store and bought all the goodies I needed to get my still life stage done. I used the plans from Carol Marines artbyte to know what I needed and the "how to" instructions to construct the shadow box. I found an alternative to the tripod and in its place I bought a Rockwell jawstand metal saw horse. It has a function to go up and down for different height levels and will hold up my shadow box perfectly fine (with a little tweaking on Carols plan). It was around $59 which is a huge savings compared to the tripod that I would have bought. I already had the clip lights and I found creative ways to prop those up. I am so happy with how it turned out! The studio is looking good.

a foolproof way to varnish your paintings

2013-05-14T14:58:00.000-06:00

Here is a great Video I found on YouTube of a great way to varnish your work, I am going to try this as I have struggled with different methods. I think Varnishing your paintings is important to protect them from dirt, dust etc. Also, I love the uniform look, it really completes a work. I added a link to the varnish here.

"say cheese"

2013-04-26T10:53:00.003-06:00

I really love all my "stuff" that I have bought for my studio. Paints, brushes, even solvents are exciting to buy. Its a little weird, but it is my candy store. Some people like buying shoes, (actually I do as well), handbags, (well, me too), gourmet food ingredients in little bottles, (I really like doing that too), car shopping, (nah), sporting goods, (sort of), craft store shopping, (been there, bought too much of that). No, It is an art supply store that I can honestly say makes me the happiest. I just walk through the aisles and look over everything and think, "oh if I could buy that right now, it would bring me such joy"! Is there a reality show for art supply pack rats, hoarders?

in one of my many jars

2013-04-24T12:47:00.000-06:00

I was really frustrated yesterday trying to figure out what to paint, when I looked around and saw my collection of jars. I must have hundreds of recycled glass vessels that I simply cannot throw away. I kinda have a thing for them, I can usually remember what was in them, and they become a little special. I have some jars that had been filled with things like lemon curd, fig or apricot jam, mango chutney, mustards or mint sauce, and these were from when I lived in England, so they became especially precious to me. YES, I actually moved them across the Atlantic ocean to be here with me in Denver, and now they have a new use in my studio. SO, here is a larger jar that had once housed some yummy spicy Garlic Fra Diavolo sauce. NOW, it holds some of my precious brushes.
