Mark Siano is a Seattle based artist who works primarily in creating ink representations of nature. A self-proclaimed “Sharpie Artist”, Siano uses the iconic black markers to illustrate the branches, bramble, and the twisting entanglements that dominate the Pacific Northwest Landscape. In addition to the swirling and snarl silhouettes that have become the artist’s trademark, Mr. Siano is also greatly influenced by the stylized patterns of early art nouveau. Inspired by the famous works of Mucha, Beardsley, and Gaudi, Mark likes to take a darker twist on the beauty of nature.

Meghann is a self-taught artist living in Seattle, WA. Her pieces are primarily crafted with oil bar, pastels, or pen & ink, though she often drifts into watercolors, mixed media, and embroidered works. Her style embraces vibrant color, stark contrasts, and the curious and playful aspects of life.

Donna Stewart is a self-taught artist who currently lives and works in Seattle, WA. Living most of her life in Seattle, she found a deep connection here. Donna has been painting for the last 10 years, playing with color, texture, emotion and movement using references of the human body, water and the feeling of standing still.

MeRa Koh!

Hello MAMAS!

I am **beyond** excited because I just got an email from MeRa Koh confirming that she will be the guest speaker our Mamas With Cameras Open Meeting this month!!!!!!!!! I don’t have enough exclamation points to show how excited I am!!!! Mark your calendars ladies for March 28th, 6:30pm at Studio R because you are NOT going to want to miss this!

Me Ra is a celebrity photographer, author and speaker, and is a regular contributor to the Nate Berkus show . Her latest book, Your Baby in Picturesjust made its debut at #231 on Amazon, and is climbing rapidly! Also, her nationwide Confidence Workshops are an awesome weekend retreat where women can explore their talent and creativity and build confidence with their digital cameras!

She spoke to our group back in 2009 and it was a packed house.  The energy in the room was incredible, she is a terrific speaker! This month she’ll share her tips and tricks with all the Mamas of how she documents the different milestones of childhood (and MAYBE we can get her to talk for a couple of minutes about what it’s like to be on the other side of the camera next to Nate!!  ), at the end of the meeting she’ll be available for book signings.

Can’t wait to see all you fabulous Mamas this month, and meet some new ones too! Bring your friends!  Also, if you have any specific questions you’d like MeRa to answer, leave them here in the comment field and I’ll be sure that she reads them!

“A Lighthouse, a Fence, and a Ship”
An exhibition of recent works by acclaimed photographer Katrina Beach.

“There is beauty in grain silos, old fences, rusted metal, sea grass, waves on the sound, an old canoe on the beach, friends, a weathered dock, beach sand and a retreating wave. Being by the salt water has a certain feeling to it. Landscapes and structures by the water have a certain draw. There is a tension between the natural coast and the human invented coast, and I find both what nature creates and what humans create beautiful. This collection of photos highlights images at the coast, which struck me as beautiful and remind me of that wonderful feeling of being by the water.” -Katrina Beach

Joe Zagorski and Kanako Sato

“Floating World Hallucinations 浮世幻覚”
Joint exhibition of recent works by acclaimed artists Joe Zagorski and Kanako Sato.

This exhibit includes the newest series of evocative watercolor images from Joe Zagorski and effervescent multi-media pieces from Kanako Sato. That makes this an evocatively effervescent exhibit! Add free booze, and it makes its own sauce. Communicating through a vocabulary of illustrative, narrative based imagery, Zagorski’s works irreverently explore themes of religious iconography, nature, and intoxication. Heavy on pattern, line, and composition, there is an explicit stylistic reference to Ukiyo-e, with the particular treatment of dimension and depth associated with that genre.

Kanako Sato will be showing works that reflect her childhood growing up surrounded by packaging materials and plastic.

Mamas With Cameras Workshop: Introduction to Digital Photography!

Are you a mama with a digital SLR camera, but you have no idea how to use it outside of the automatic setting? Does the idea of reading an instruction manual make you nauseous? Are you interested in taking amazing pictures of your kids, but feel a bit intimidated by the technology behind your camera? With an investment of just a few short hours, we’ll get you grounded in the basic definitions and controls on your digital SLR camera so that your photos of your child’s big milestones can be as beautiful and moving as the moments themselves. Come join a hands-on workshop where you can learn, explore and shoot with your camera alongside a bunch of other fellow mamas!

Finding the light with special guest JENNIFER LOOMIS, and October wrap-up!

This month, we are in for a special treat!! Our guest speaker is Jennifer Loomis, celebrity maternity photographer, who pioneered the current maternity portrait genre back in the 1990′s. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, Time Magazine, CBS, ABC-you name it! She’ll be doing a presentation called “Finding the Light.” This has been months in the making, so I would say if you are going to make sure you hit one meeting this year, this is the one!

Since it is our last meeting of the year, I’ll be collecting a donation of $10 from all of the mamas, which we’ll be using to get a holiday “thank you” gift for the staff at Studio R who generously allow us to use their space! Please bring your $10 in cash to make life easy, thanks!!

Rabbit Stew String Band is an Old Time trio of fiddle, guitar, and banjo, playing community music that filled grange halls, barns, and front porches at the start of the last century. With tunes that carry names like “Shove That Pigs Foot a Little Further Into the Fire” and “Jaybird Died of a Whooping Cough”, your brain might wonder at the origins of this stuff, but your feet will know exactly what to do. Mark your calendars, Mamas! Our next meeting is coming up on Monday, October 25th, 6:30-8:30 at Studio R!

This month, Laura Totten of Blissed Photography will be presenting to the group on the topic of Posing your Subjects. Whether you are posing your own child, siblings, a friend or even another whole family, it is always great to have some good and flattering compositions in your back pocket. Laura has a background in high-end fashion and wedding photography, and is eager to share her secrets with us! Here’s a snippet of her bio: “As a photographer of life, I work with people during their most celebrated life experiences.   From weddings and newborns, to Seahawks and Sounders games, to intimate performances and concerts, I constantly look for the most honest moment in my subject’s experience.”

This month, the topic will be especially timely, because after the presentation during circle time, I’ll be pairing everyone off in our annual Mama Portrait Exchange! We all have the same problem- no pictures of us with our own kids! So the photo assignment for the month of November will be the portrait exchange. The picture that Jenni took last year with me and my son is still one of my favorite ones of us together–don’t miss out on the fun this year!
