The Ahmedabad city street walls are awash with a roit of colours.

The A.M.C recently organised an event to paint the blank walls on streets in Satellite, Maninagar (Kankaria) and near the University Ground.

Artists & locals from the city, as well as Artists from Kutch were invited to paint.

People Stopping by to watch the artists at work.

An interesting range of styles adorn the walls.

It was great to see the space transform in a couple of days. The City definitely looks more lively and it's great that the public gets of daily dose of art as they drive by .

to support this Charity Event and had T- Shirts with her drawings on Animals with

quotes by her late father Mr. Reuben David who set up the Ahmedabad Zoo.

A large varity of paintings covering many genres were showcased.

Curator Akkireddy Prakash Naidu with the children whose drawings on animals were put up at the event. Their work was for display only. the children were exited to see their work along with that of artists and interact with them. they had a lot of questions to ask and we loved having them visit.

Hi friends, the much awaited post ..we would like to share with you. This was done for Ahmedabad and Amdavadis with all the love from our artists who came along generously to put up the show : The 2nd Ahmedabad International Art Festival 2011 (AIAF). With all the gratitude to one and all who contributed towards the colorful event. We are happy to celebrate posting this.

The large open space on hand was put to good use .. for an installation..

An old wooden Antique Darwaza (Door) and a Chabootra (Bird Feeder) were placed and around them we scattered grains for the birds ..and placed water bowls.

The installation embodied godess Laxmi in hundreds of Paper Lotus Flowers, spread at the venue symbolizing the legend explained in following text.

Many of our winged friends did grace us with their presence... peacocks, pigeons and crows.. they were all part of the installation along with hundreds of paper lotuses in various sizes...

The use of Chabootra and Antique Traditional Darwaza(Doors and Gates) is symbolic to life in and around the old city creating the social fabric- well integrated which was safe in the walled city with various Darwaza's built along the city. The Chabootra(Bird Feeder) is an intrinsic feature of Ahmedabad community dwellings where people gather for various daily chores as well evening chit chats, thus keeping the harmony within the community healthy and well informed.

The story goes that a long time ago the 13 gates of the walled ahmedabad city were locked each night and the keys given to the Nagarsheth. One night a Muslim Dwarpal or gatekeeper saw a woman trying to leave the city .. it was Laxmi, the godess of wealth and prosperity. He tried to stop her and when she said she waned to leave the city he told her that he would go get the keys to the gate .. he made her promise that she would not step out of the city until he returnd. She gave him her word. he went and got the keys from the nagarsheth's house but was sad that she would leave .. he would not let that happen .. he took his own life and Godess Laxmi still dwells within the city .. she never left because the gatekeeper did'nt return .. he sacrificed his life for the prosperity of the city , so that it would always prosper and grow.

Something about this story must be true... Ahmedabad is the fastest growing city in india today and it's people and business continues to thrive. The installation touched on this aspect of the city ..It's growth and journey from being a small hamlet called ashavali on the banks of the sabarmati ruled by a bhil king to what it is today.

Banyan Art an artist studio based in Baroda too showcased their work at the venue. Their event was an exhibition of paintings on the theme of Ahmedabad for the festival that celebrates the city.

The art works being well appreciated by the Amdavadi's.

Veteran Artist of the city Mr. Amit Ambalal, Mr. Manu Parekh and Ms. Madhavi Parekh with co-ordinator Deviba Wala.

We screened Documentry Movies on ahmedabad by young filmmakers from NID. These films were interesting and highlighted various aspects of the city culture and it's people.

Children get amused by the installation, they were allowed to grab some lotuses to take home, as token of love and prosperity.

We co-ordinated for the C.N. College of Fine Arts last year and for this year We thought we'd put up an exhibition with our own artists from Studio Verve and artilatives (friends and relatives we made through art) those associated with us.

The event was held at the 'Rang Bhavan' or amphitheatre at the C.N Vidyavihar campus.

A journey from the time when the city was a tiny settlement known as Ashavali on the east of the river Sabarmati led by a Bhil king, then a city thriving and growing under the rule of Karandev and being named Karnavati to being the great sultanate of Ahmed Shah : Ahmedabad. Dynamically transforming itself by the time; today it is the sixth largest and fastest growing city in India. A unique city that has a strong sense of community living and an uncanny sense of business with its thriving textile industry travelling the industrial era, earned the title Manchester of the east. Banyan Art at Ahmedabad International Art Festival 2011

Ahmedabad depicted through art by artists from “Banyan Art” Baroda.The living city of Ahmedabad is rich in diverse culture. People here lead a simple and quite lifestyle, but during any festival the city transforms into a rich colorful event. Like in Navratri, people gather and dance for nine consecutive nights; “garba”, a dance form in convoluting circles, similar to how the very city of Ahmedabad is growing around the walls. In Garba, people are free to join the dance and thus the circle grows larger, and the energy flows till the midnight Aarti. The circles of this city itself have an ability to overlap creating beautiful patterns that are resilient and have stood the test of time, echoing through the ages.
Time keeps moving around a lamp, a lamp that has burned for centuries at the Delhi Darwaza, the heart that keeps the city prosperous. The city flows seamlessly from the remnants of a beautiful old walled city with 12 gates to the river front that will soon be lined with beautiful. coffee shops, parks and theatres . There is now a distinct visual culture in Ahmedabad and the city leaves an image, a visual imprint
Besides these the city boasts a multiple cultural influences. These influences extended beyond religion, to architecture, literature, art and crafts etched in society.
Today the city has a modern facet in the form of its world acclaimed buildings, educational institutes, entrepreneurs, industries and infrastructure ever growing into a prolific city of international repute keeping its heritage intact for generation next. We had one more new "artilative" (term used for relatives of art at ARTIST LOUNGE of STUDIO VERVE ), this time a young architect who is working with crafts integrated into space making of buildings.

The contemporary practise of crafts could be merged into urban contexts and appropriated to suit modern lifestyles.

Crafts have always been a way of life for many communities or older times, still India is among the few fortunate countries where life co-exists with many crafts as a way of life well integrated into present times.

The work presented by Smriti reemphasizes the importance of crafts not just as traditions or products of decorative or functional use but also have passed on narratives retold to generations in many ways silently, maybe in stone, wood, murals, metal castings, scroll paintings, textiles etc. They are of great value.

Research Paper – “Radhasoami Samadh, Agra: Stone Crafts as medium of Narration”, published in CONTEXT – Journal of the Development and Research Organisation for Nature, Arts and Heritage, Vol.VIII, Issue 1, Spring/Summer 2011.
Invitation by Association of Art Historians to present a paper on – “Telling Stories: making research accessible through display” in a conference in March 2011 at University of Warwick)

The presentation came for many young artists and designers as retrospection to look into their practices, furthering the discussions from serious to lighter modes as some experiences illustrated by senior professionals contributed immensly to the discussion and shed light on the more practical side of it.

As said by the young architect herself;

Crafts need to be understood beyond the production of aesthetic objects. Crafts with an added dimension of space making, or the space making crafts is one such field which encompasses hard and soft material applications in the interior architecture of the buildings. The session especially emphasized on the relationship between Interior architecture (stone crafts) and narratives (as a communication system), thus discussing the story telling power of buildings, stone crafts being the medium.

The case presented was Radhasoami Samadh, Agra. It is the Holy Samadh of “Param Purush Puran Dhani” Huzur Soamiji Maharaj, the august founder of the Radhasoami faith.The model was proposed by Soamiji It is an exemplary illustration that builds up through narratives. It is a “spiritual renaissance”, which absorbs eclectic influences, and emerges as an assemblage of all. The images in this building are seen through the process of stone crafts (carving and inlay). There are multiple narrators and different stories. Stone Craft is a 'sutradhar', which with a tremendously powerful backdrop of Radhasoami belief system ('sutra'), binds this story with multiple narrators.in1904, and the building is getting constructed ever since then
the building has been under construction since 1904 (not because of the curse, as the myth suggests, but simply because of the true craftsmanship and intricacy).

The case of Radhasoami Samadh reflects the storytelling power of a building, with narrative as its life sustaining force. Stone Crafts are used here as a narrative medium that negotiate between what is seen and what is experienced.The study lays emphasis on the layers of meaning that are communicated through stone crafts. The approach of understanding the multiple narratives and their manifestations in crafts can be the key to realising the potential and significance of craft traditions in historic and present context.

The work presented raised many topics for discussion, which did become exhaustive but managed to sensitize everyone towards crafts, seeking new dimensions of thinking and putting it to appropriate practices as well as places, hence enriching life in many ways.There is a need to continue the legacy of crafts that has been passed down to us by our ancestors.

Smriti Saraswat is a passionate professional, fascinated with crafts and traditional practices, she shared with us a few other projects also based on local crafts. Not only does she love to work with crafts but has great sensibilities towards practicality in sensibly integrating crafts into space modifiers, making a happy marriage between space and crafts suiting the purpose and making a space more appealing.

Intense in nature she's an architect that seeks knowledge constantly and has a keen interest in other allied art forms.

We've been busy with various activities but continue our regular inhouse events.

This gathering is evidence of frequent formal sharings and disscussions triggered by presentations that happen ever so often at ARTIST LOUNGE of STUDIO VERVE

by various creative people from diverse fields of study, practitioners and experts.

The Lounge is growing day by day, event by event into a good platform for many professionals to come and share their work,

Bhutan ....land of the thunder dragon ! A little about it's art and religion.

Bhutan is a place where Art and Religion are so entwined that you cannot speak of one without the other!

Art is mainly practiced for the purpose of decoration in monasteries.. it is to pay tribute to the god's.

There are 13 traditional art forms called the "zorig chosum"

most popular among them are : carpentry, paper making/ papier mache, tangkha painting, weaving, cane and bamboo work, sculpting, stone(slate) carving and bronze casting.

Mahakala

There is an old monastery in chapcha that is 400 years old .. for the godess mahakala .. a re-incarnation of kali mata ! the Bhutanese gods and godesses all i was surprised to find have Indian corresponding gods ..Buddhism after all does have it's roots in hinduism ..There is one God who is blue in colour and has hair that has flames ..he's called mahakal and his consort is mahakala !he is supposed to be shiva!

Kali! durga! devi !.. are all forms of parvati. so they are versions of shiv -parvati ... makes sense.

Another popular god here is Padmasambhava. He is the one who built the first monastery here on a very high cliff ,the engineering is still a mystery today. They say he heard the sound of a Dragon and called the land "Druk Yul .. land of the thundering dragon" .. that's still the local name for the country. He came on a white tiger from the mountains ... the place he built is called tiger's nest or Thakshang. Padmasambhava is according to legend actually Guru Nanak .. there are tales of all his visit's across the himalayas . In sikkim is a town called chung-thang ...it is actually a version of changi thaa* in punjabi it means a good place ..to rest. Guru nanak had stayed there and there is a huge gurudwara. On the china border too at 13000 feet north sikkim there is a village that never freezes near the gurdombar lake .. guru nanak took refuge there one night while crossing over. I've seen the place .. snow all around even in july but miraculously the place stays warm even in extreme winter.... no snow! just a patch in the snowy desert that people still live in ... it's not seperated from the rest of the land by any barriers or hills ..nor does it lie in a valley at a different altitude..

A new beginning at Artist Lounge. It is not the first for us to show our work but indeed was a relaunch after many events at verve. We learnt our basics again and got back to work with our new initiative
at 'The Artist's Lounge!'

Happy to present this place formerly and to invite our friends and show them we are under a process in this warm lighting underground, learning daily as well as creating new work.

That's why we were absent from many of our regular hangouts, here comes the answer this way through 'ShuruArt' for many who were missing us. Just come in, we are here ..... come find out wat's happening.

Here is the place were 13 artist have shown their 'underground' activities undertaken since the inception of the place 'Artist Lounge'.

Come down u'll find an array of welcoming rooms, it's like a little maze ... take a turn to be in one of them.

Just follow the rooms one by one and take a turn again u'll be in other room.
The works awaits you all.

Yes, this is one display which created a verve by inhouse artist Mr.Shaam.
Amazing work and equally good display, was eyecatching to many onlookers.

All the walls flooded by works, every space was carefully used and converted the studio into a gallery for few days. The rooms spelled by creative pieces all around to the very contradiction of initial thought 'do we have enough work to display' but turned out the otherway round sparing no space for many good works. So had no choice but picked few of every inhouse artists woks.

Begining of the show and we had the senior designer and artist from reputed design institution National Institute of Design, India, Mr. Errol Pires seen with me and Shaam. Errol Pires, who is a keen art lover, busy photographer, a ply-split braiding artist of international fame, who is soon coming up with his first ever large collection of works done over two decades, must watch out for him...

Viewers had choice of looking at various mediums from paintings to printmaking, sculptures to ceramics, drawings to paper masks to fiber art(textile).

This was always the scene here at Artist Lounge as our art relatives kept coming not just to view the work but also for sharing ideas and experiences.

As we said, here we have artists from various fields.

The loom you're seeing and the hanging piece fiber art is by Mr. Shantanu Das, a textile artist and designer.

Its very interesting to see fabric being woven on this loom, to many who dont have an idea of the traditional way of cloth making.. here it is.

This exhibition gave chance to many of us for healthy discussions and sharing thoughts ..between many inhouse and visiting art relatives.

The art was not distanced but rather in reach, which helped many for better interaction and experience.

I would like to thank all the art relatives who graced the place and occassion for sharing their experiences.

Last but not be least mentioning all the odds and drama that went behind the scenes, believe me it was great fun.

With all the energy that kept flowing all through the days when the display was on, along with a lot of senior artists who visited and shared their bit of knowledge and stories which did inspire the young lot in the house of ARTIST LOUNGE.

Yes its very true to admit we the bunch of few creative people the constant learners with this new beginning would extend ourselves into more dynamic engagement of art dialogue and its spread, who ever come in contact with 'Artist Lounge'

This Exhibition was held at Banthia Commercial the newly launched Art Store.The Paintings ranged from contemporary to abstract to the realistic depictions of Bhutan's beautiful landscapes and majestic monasteries and in the centre is a Relief on wood by the King of Bhutan:King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck

Deviba Wala with Mr. & Mrs. Dilip Dandekar who inaugurated the exhibition, Ex Chief of Police and Asha Kama Curator who is Bhutan's most popular and beloved Artist.

The Show well attended and appreciated. it was to promote art and creativity in bhutan. This art store aims to expand into an art gallery some day as there is none yet in Phuentsholing.

Phuentsholing is the border town that connects Bhutan to India through Jaigaon, Hence very important to the bhutnese for trade. This town has a lot of Govt. offices and also The Indian Consulate. The only road into Bhutan that goes up to Thimphu, it's capital also begins here.

who visited our Artist Lounge and shared his work.

He has worked in Banglore, Pune and now in Versova, Mumbai.

He has Exhibited his works in many galleries.

Presently runs a studio and company by the name "Monkey Bussiness"

along with a friend, Bhagyashree Patwardhan fondly known as Pattu

The work for itself speaks tons about the artist, no doubt his open conversation about ordeals, flip flops and the journey so far is definitely of good inspiration to any new aspirant in the field of art and design.

His perseverence and consistancy towards acheiving levels have been a driving force and kept him on to strive for more deftness, more richness etc.

His work is the reflection of his hardwork and dedication. His shifting from one city to other also show his adventurous side and passion towards work.

Here we could see our friends from the animation deptartment, founders of Girgit Company that started just a year and half ago who are extremely talented, making interesting animation work and already going places.

Also the noticable things is, both have given few essential tips and ideas to the new entrepreneurs sitting in the presentation.

Post tea break session seemed more a interactive as many interacted and got a deeper understanding of works done by Thomas as well a better technicalities explained by the artist helped many of us appreciate the medium of ceramic and glass more those who hav'nt worked with the medium.

These conversations and experiences shared by Thomas have indeed enriched us by far and in depth the nuances of ceramic and glass art.

The members of Studio Verve discussing with respected Mr. Raju Bhai, who runs a NGO named "Jivan Tirth". An ardent Gandhian and social worker, who believes in all round development of an individual hence encourages participation and performance of all forms of art.

His belief in education is entirely apt to the very meaning of schooling, schooling which actually means learning at leisure and not an education actually missing the whole deal about true learning .

A man who does not just preach but practices in action too.

We will together soon host a sculpture camp at his place in the month of October or November 2011.

KOBA is a tiny village near the capital of Gujarat, a picturesque location on the banks of river Sabarmati. It would be a great retreat to participating artists as well art lovers visiting the venue and of course to Studio Verve members. I'm eagerly looking forward for this camp, what about u all ?

He is an Animator by profession.

And his work is the first to adorn our place.

We were happy to see our new place : The Artist Lounge and see arneb spell his magic on the wall.

Of course he always gathers an audience just like that, which is a visual treat to onlookers anyway.

He just freed his arms with spraying colours and did an amazing little infant elephant that is still to see this big world.

Look at him ! still not satisfied, wanting to do more, To believe this you have to come see this riot of colors in and around NID, Paldi to see his awesome work shadowing the walls, bus stops, over bridges,and hideouts etc and of course also at the very famous eatery by fellow Nidians ,Tib-market.

This is his signature style acknowledging his every work, which you will find all around this place, close by NID-Paldi, Ahmedabad, Gujurat, India.

he spent a whole day with us at Artist Louge sharing and talking to all in person and building a healthy rappo. We hope to associate more with him in the future

Had some heavy discussions and lighter moments !

The gang seems to be happy about the gathering and having a enriching experience at Artist Lounge.

Engrossed in the presentation ! Umesh has transported us to another world with his works.

This small piece in Umesh's hand is designed by Abhijit Paul. Umesh was awe-stuck with this small token that we presented to him, it was a nice feeling watching him playing with it.

We also had another guest from the Kanoria Art Centre, the very smiling Shad in picture also was happy receiving this token of love.

Having Umesh at our Artist Lounge was truly a nice experience. Looking at his work, knowing him better as artist and as a person as well ashaving fruitful discussions. we talked about doing some events across Bangalore and Ahmadabad, making the most out of our beautiful place the Artist Lounge.

This association will definitely lead to good events in the near future.

Shyam is always the silent man around but a consistent artist at work all the time...very child unlike his appearance! a nice guy , soft spoken... yes his works speak silently of many things and he's an artist in the true sense of the word. We love having him around. Shyam has amazing love towards 'Papier-mâché', n does magic with paper ........u'll see his works soon.

work, work n work............work she is in love with . Painting all the time, she wanted to do a lot of portraits of people but ended up being the favorite model for other artists at Artist Lounge......soon we will post her in all possible avatars penned down by all inhouse artists.wait for it.......

The "Artist's lounge" an initiative by Verve launches in June, 2011.

It has Artist Studios and is an area for artists to meet, share and spend time together as an unorthodox forum. it changes the way art studios are viewed. Artist's lounge is an alternative art space where like minded people from different creative fields viz. designers, writers, poets etc are welcome to come and interact with the professional visual artists in a comfortable non intimidating space over a cup of coffee or browse through it’s mini library. it is an open house.

Situated in Ahmedabad, a two minute walk from the National Institute of Design, the Artist's lounge provides an opportunity to Artists from the visual Art fields to stay for a short duration and experience and explore the ahmedabad art culture. The program seeks to connect artists from various genres. The purpose is not only to advance the arts, but also to provide an atmosphere to foster cultural exchange between the artists and their adopted home. Verve attempts to make it convenient for artists by accepting applications for studios at the Artist in Residence Programme all year round.

Artist’s Lounge will be a self financed programme where Workshops will be conducted each month in various mediums : Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Clay Modeling and Papier Mache, for both children and adults in order to maintain the free studios for professional artists and at the same increases art awareness and makes art more accessible to those interested in learning.

The workshop on sculpture was held at the C.N College of Fine Arts and the alumni of the sculpture department were invited to work on blocks of aerated autoclaved cement. a demonstration was given by a company which produces the product and had traditional craftsmen showing the properties of the same.
the medium is relatively easy to work with as it is soft and easy to carve.
the sculptures have been put up in the campus.
