They were so sweet and innocent, I couldn't help but like them.<br /> <br /> The artist, Kim Casali, originally began creating the little drawings to express her feelings for an Italian named Roberto, whom she met in the 1960s.<br /> <br /> They were dating, and Kim would leave the cartoons where he would be sure to find them. "I began making little drawings for myself to express how I felt. . . . I would leave little notes under his pillow. After we married, he showed me he'd kept them all," she said.<br /> <br /> Kim Casali met her soon-to-be husband in California, where they were living illegally. He was from Italy, she was from New Zealand, and both were trying to stay ahead of immigration authorities. <br /> <br /> Near the end of the '60s the Kim Casali "love" cartoons came to the attention of someone in the licensing and syndication business, and the Love is... syndicated newspaper cartoon took on a life of its own.<br /> <br /> Today Love is... is distributed by Los Angeles Times Syndicate. A Director of Promotion at the syndicate estimates the feature is currently appearing in more than 100 newspapers world-wide.
