Individual or Collective Right – A brief history of the 2nd Amendment

Today we are struggling with people who believe the right to keep and bear arms is somehow a collective right, tied to militia membership, and not an individual natural right. This false assumption is based on today’s understanding and rhetoric. We also have the ambiguous 1939 Supreme Court case, U.S. vs. Miller that significantly fails to embrace the founding generation’s intent. The other area we have is the 2nd Amendment’s preamble that some point to as a reason to support the collective, militia tied concept. Yet history and understanding of bearing arms teaches us what is really the intent – the right to keep and bear arms is an individual natural right!

When we are attempting to solve a problem or overcome a challenge it is imperative we seek out the root cause. “This is generally referred to as Root Cause Analysis, finding the real cause of the problem and dealing with it rather than simply continuing to deal with the symptoms.” (Systems Thinking, 2012) During each election cycle, over the past 100+ years at least, citizens are fed a large number of issues with many personalities explaining how, if elected, they will be the champions of change and the one who will fix issues. Intervention is a really sound policy

Just ask any of those who are opposed to the notion the United States should move our foreign policy from one of intervention toward one of non-intervention and you will hear the many reasons why our approach works so well. We have stayed on an interventionist path since the end of World War II and made a real case for intervention even before that, back when President Woodrow Wilson was selling U.S. Citizens on the notion we are a democracy and we should be sharing it around the world. Michele Bachman has been bragging of her slap down of Ron Paul since the last Fox debate before the Iowa Caucus as he attempted, although not very artfully, to once again talk up the idea of non-intervention.
