Answer:
The WWW (World Wide Web) is a collection of millions of documents stored on computers permanently connected to the internet. These documents are inter-linked and contain information and data in the form of text, graphics, audio, and video. Special software, called a browser, is used to access these documents.

Q.2: Define File Transfer Protocol (FTP)?
Answer:
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is used to transfer files over the internet. It provides functions to log on to the network, list directories, and copy files. Different types of files, programs, graphics, etc. can be transferred using this protocol.

Q.3: What is an email?
Answer:
E-mail (Electric Mail) is a method of sending messages from one computer to another over the internet. It is one of the original services of the internet. It is the most frequently used service of the internet.

Q.4: What is a Telnet?
Answer:
Telnet stands for Terminal Network. It provides a remote login capability. It enables a user to logon to a remote computer and function as if the user’s computer is directly connected to the remote computer.

Q.5: Define chat groups (chat rooms)?
Answer:
Chat Rooms (Chat Groups) are locations on the internet that provides facilities to users to chat with each other in real-time. Chat is a typed conversation. Real-time means that the users who are taking part in a conversation is online at the same time.

Q.6: What is a gopher?
Answer:
Gopher is a software application. It provides menu-based search and files retrieval facilities on a computer network. It has two types of applications i.e. gopher client and gopher server.

Q.7: Differentiate between gopher client and gopher server?
Answer:
Gopher Client: It runs on the computer requesting access. This application uses Telnet to gain access to the remote computer.
Gopher Server: It runs on the computer offering files. This application displays a menu describing files that are available. It uses FTP for the transfer of resources to the client computer.

Q.8: Define HTTP?
Answer:
HTTP stands for HyperText Transfer Protocol. It is a communications protocol. It is used to connect to servers on the Web. Its primary function is to establish a connection with a Web server and transmit HTML pages or any other file required by a browser.

Q.9: What is an Intranet?
Answer:
The intranet is a privately owned, secure, business network based on internet technology, although not necessarily connected to the internet. It is a small version of the internet and used within an organization. It is sometimes also called an enterprise network.

Q.10: What is an Extranet?
Answer:
An extranet is two or more intranets connected in such a way that they enable collaboration among the companies that own the separate intranets. On an extranet, each connected the company usually makes some selected part of its intranet accessible to the employees of one or more other companies.

Answer:
Interconnection is the medium that connects computers and devices in a network. There are various types of media that are used as network interconnection. The choice of medium for a network depends upon its characteristics and the requirements of the network. More widely used media are coaxial cables, unshielded twisted pair cables, fiber-optic cables, VSAT, satellites, and submarine cables.

Q.14: Define NIC?
Answer:
NIC (Network Interface Card) is a piece of computer hardware that connects each computer to the wiring in the network. It is a circuit board that fits in one of the computer’s internal expansion slots. Some computers have built-in NIC.

Bridge is used to connect similar network segments and recognizes the messages on a network and passes on those addressed to nodes in another network. A bridge is used in a network to segment it and keep traffic contained within the segments to improve performance.

The ternary operator is an operator that has three operands or arguments. The example of ternary operator in C language is conditional operator.

Answer:
The manipulation of division operation is slightly different from other arithmetic operations in C. when the divisor and the dividend both are integers, the fractional part of the quotient is truncated.

Q.7: Differentiate between 7.0 / 2.0 and 7 / 2 statements?
Answer:
The result value of 7.0 / 2.0 is 3.5 but the value of 7 / 2 is the integral part of the result i.e. 3. The fractional part of the result i.e. .5 is truncated.

Q.8: What are the values of a and b after execution? Let a and b be two variables of type double and int respectively:

Answer:
The comments are used increase the readability of the program. With comments, informative notes are inserted in the program’s code, which helps in debugging and modifying the program. There are two types of comments in C:

Single-line comments:

One can insert single-line comments by typing two forwards slashes at the start of the note such as:
// This is an example of single-line comment.

Multi-line comments:

Multi-line comments are used to add such informative notes which extend to multiple lines. It can be inserted to the code by placing /* characters at the beginning of the comments, this is called opening of the multi-line comments. Each multi-line comment must end with letters */.

Q.1: Define data types for integers?

Answer:

The data type int is used to represent integers – the whole numbers. This means that int variables store numbers that have no fractional parts such as 1128, -1025, etc. Along with standard type int, the compiler also supports two more types of integers i.e. short intand long int. The data types signed int and intcan handle both signed and unsigned whole numbers such as 245, -150, etc., whereas the data type unsigned can not handle negative numbers.

Q.2: Define data types for floating-point numbers?

Answer:

Floating-point numbers are the numbers that have a fractional part e.g., 12.359, and -8.64, etc. ANSI C specifies three floating-point types that differ in their memory requirements: float, double, and long double. These data types provide higher precision than the data types used for integers.

Q.3: Define data type for characters?

Answer:

The data type char is used to represent a letter, number, or punctuation mark. A char data type variable occupies 1 byte in memory and can represent individual characters such as ‘a’, ‘c’ and ‘$’ etc.

Q.4:What is arithmetic underflow?

Answer:

When two very small numbers are manipulated, the result may be too small to be represented accurately, so it will be represented as zero. This phenomenon is called arithmetic underflow.

Q.5: What is arithmetic overflow?

Answer:

Manipulation of two very large numbers may result to a too large number to be represented. This phenomenon is called arithmetic overflow.

Q.6: What are the operators?

Answer:

Operators are symbols, which are used to perform certain operations on data. C is equipped with a rich set of operators e.g. arithmetic operators, relational operators, logical operators, bitwise operators, and many others.

Q.7: What is the modulus (remainder) operator?

Answer:

Contrary to the division operator, which returns the quotient, it returns the remainder of an integral division. For example, if a and b are two integers having values 8 and 3 respectively, then the express a % b will be evaluated to 2, which is the remainder of the integral division.

Q.8: What are relational operators?

Answer:

Relational operators are used to compare two values. These operators always evaluate to true or false. There are six basic relational operators in C i.e. ==, <, >, <=, >=, and != .

Q.9: Define logical operators?

Answer:

Logical operators combine two or more relational expressions to construct compound expressions. The logical operators are && (logical AND), || (logical OR), and ! (logical NOT). The logical operators always evaluate to true or false.

Q.10: Differentiate between Logical ‘AND’ and Logical ‘OR’ operators?

Answer:

Logical&& (logical AND) Operator:When combines two conditions, evaluates to true if both the conditions are true, otherwise, it evaluates to false.

Logical || (logical OR) Operator: When combines two conditions evaluate to true if any one of the conditions evaluate to true, otherwise, it evaluates to false.

Q.11: Define ! (logical NOT) operator?

Answer:

The logical operator ! (logical NOT) when applied toa condition, reverse the result of the evaluation of the condition, this means that if the condition evaluates to true, the logical NOT operator evaluates to false and vice versa.

Q.12: What is an assignment operator?

Answer:

The assignment operator is used to store a value or a computational result in a variable. The symbol = represents the assignment operator. For example:

Area = height * width;

Q.13: Differentiate between increment and decrement operators?

Answer:

The increment operator increases the value of its operand by one whereas the decrement operator decreases the value of its operand by one. These are denoted by the symbol ++ and _ _ respectively.

Q.14: Differentiate between prefix and postfix increment operator?

Answer:

When ++ precedes its operand, it is called prefix increment. When the ++ follows its operand, it is called postfix increment.

Answer:

During the late 1960s, it was designed as ARPANET (Advanced Research Project Agency NETwork) by the US Department of Defense – DARPA, in collaboration with other universities and research organizations. Q.10: What is NSFNET?
Answer:
In 1989, all previous networks were replaced by National Science Foundation’s Network (NSFNET). This was an important decision. Now the network could be used for civilian purpose also, and the use and application of the internet grew rapidly.

Q.11: What is packet switching?
Answer:
The network operated with a technique called packet switching in which digital data was sent in small packages called packets. The packets contained data, address information, error-control information and sequencing information.

Q.12: Define servers?
Answer:
Servers allow users to connect to the internet. Servers also help the users to store and share information on the internet.

Q.13: What is host computer?
Answer:
A computer that stores information in the form of text, pictures, sound, and video and to which the terminal or PC is attached is called host computer. If a PC is being used as a terminal, file transfer software permits users to download data files from the host or upload data files to the host.

Answer:
To downloada file means to retrieve it from another computer and to send it to the computer of the user who requested the file. To upload a file, a user sends a file to another computer.

Answer:

A flatbed plotter has a paper lying flat on table-like surface. The bed size varies according to the need. One to four color pens move across the paper.

Drum plotter works like a flatbed plotter with the difference that the paper is mounted over a drum enabling a continuous output. Typical usage is to track an earthquake reading.

Q.2: Differentiate between bit and byte?

Answer:

The binary number 1 or 0 is called a bit(Binary Digit), which is the basic unit for storing data in the computer memory.

A byte is a combination of 8-bits, that can store a single character of data. the capacity of the memory or the storage is expressed in terms of the number of bytes it can hold or store.

Q.3: What is meant by the term “WORD”?

Answer:

Word is the size of a register, is defined as the number of bits that constitute a common unit of data. it varies from computer to computer. Generally, the larger the word, the more powerful is the computer. Normally 4-bytes are equal to 1-Word in the microcomputer.

Answer:

XGA stands for Extended Graphics Array. It supports up to 16.7 million colors at a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels. Depending on the video display adapter memory chip, XGA will support 256,65536 or 16,777,216 colors. It is called 24-bit color or true color.

Q.2: Define CRT?
Answer:

CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) is a vacuum tube used as a display screen in a computer or video display terminal. This also is found in the television set and in-flight information monitors in the airport.

Q.3: What is a flat-panel display screen?
Answer:

The flat-panel displays are much thinner, weightless, and consume less power to CRT. It is made up of two plates of glass with a substance in between them which is activated in different ways. This is better for portable computers.

Answer:

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is a type of flat-panel display screen. It consists of a substance called liquid crystal, the molecules of which line up in a way that lighting behind the screen is blocked or allowed through to create an image.

EL (Electro-Luminescent Display) is a type of flat-panel display screen. It contains a substance that glows when it is charged by an electric current.

Answer:

Gas-Plasma display is a type of flat-panel display screen. It is like a neon bulb, in which the display uses a gas that emits light in the presence of an electric current.

Answer:

An impact printer forms character or images by striking a mechanism such as a print hammer or wheel against an inked ribbon, leaving an image on the paper. Dot matrix, daisy wheel, and line printers are examples of an impact printer.

Answer:

It contains a print head of small pins, which strike an inked ribbon against the paper, forming characters or images. Print heads with 9, 18, or 24 pins, with 24 pins head offer the best quality.

Q.9: Define the daisy-wheel printer?
Answer:

It uses a mechanism in the shape of a series of petals arranged on a petal wheel having a character at the end of each petal. A character comes into a print position by wheel rotation and an image is formed by the hammer strike on the desired character. It is slower than dot-matrix but better in quality.

Q.10: Define the line printer?
Answer:

Line printer is normally used by mainframe and minicomputers. It prints a whole line of characters at once rather than a single character at a time. It can print up to 3000 lines per minute.

Q.11: What is a non-impact printer?
Answer:

It forms characters or images without making direct physical contact between the printing mechanism and paper. Laser, ink-jet, and thermal printers are examples of non-impact printers.

Answer:

Laser (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) printer is similar to a photocopying machine and it uses the principle of dot-matrix printers of creating images with dots. These images are created on a drum treated with a magnetically charged ink-like toner and then transferred from drum to the paper.

Answer:

It uses colored waxes and heat to produce images by burning dots on special paper. It produces a high-quality printout but is quite expensive.

Answer:

A plotter is used to produce high-quality graphics in many colors and for specialized applications i.e. architectural drawings, maps, graphs, and charts.

MICR stands for Magnetic-Ink Character Recognition. It is a method of machine-reading characters made of magnetized particles. MICR characters, which are printed with magnetized ink, are read by MICR equipment, producing a digitized signal, which goes to the computer as data for further processing.

Q.2: Define OMR?

Answer:

OMR stands for Optical Mark-Recognition. Optical recognition systems use a light beam to scan input data to convert it into electrical/digital signals, which are then sent to the computers for further processing. For example, OMR is used to read the SAT and GRE marks.

Q.3: What is OCR?

Answer:

OCR stands for Optical Character-Recognition. It uses a device that reads preprinted characters in a particular font and converts them to digital code. The common examples are some utility bills, and price tags in the department stores.

Q.4: Define Magnetic-Strip Cards?

Answer:

It has a strip of magnetically encoded data on its back. They are used for personal identification during driving, in the stores, at public places, etc.

Q.5: Define smart cards?

Answer:

It looks like a credit card but a microprocessor and memory chip has been added additionally. When inserted into a reader, it exchanges data with the corresponding information on a central computer. A mobile sim card and ATM card are good examples of smart cards.

Answer:

The fax or facsimile transmission machine scans an image and sends it as electrical signals over telephone lines to a receiving fax machine, which re-creates the image on paper. It has two types.

Q.7: Differentiate between dedicated fax machine and fax modem?

Dedicated fax machines are the normal fax machines whereas, the fax modem is a circuit board inside the system unit. It has the capability to send signals directly to someone else’s fax machine or computer fax modem, from computer to computer.

Answer:

Image scanner (graphic scanner) converts text, drawings, and photographs into digital form and stores it on the computer system for further processing.

Answer:

Raster graphics refers to the technique of representing a graphic image as a matrix of dots.

Q.10: Define the audio input device?

Answer:

An audio input device records analog sound and translates it for digital storage and processing. Microphone is mostly used as an audio input device.

Answer:

Sound (analog form) goes through a special circuit board called an audio board, which converts analog sound to digital form and stores it for further processing and/or plays it back.

Answer:

Films and video images from VCR or camcorder are converted to digital form with the help of a special digitizing card is called a video input card. It has two types.

Q.13: Differentiate between frame-grabber and full-motion video card?

Answer:

Frame-grabber video card capture and digitize only a single frame at a time. Full-motion video card also known as adapters can convert analog to digital signals at the rate of up to 30 frames per second, giving the effect of a continuously flowing motion picture.

Answer:

A digital camera uses a light-sensitive processor chip to capture photographic images in digital form on a small disk inserted in the camera or on flash-memory chips. The digital form is then uploaded to the computer for manipulation and printing out.

Q.15: Differentiate between softcopy (sound) output and hardcopy output?

Answer:

Softcopy: It refers to data that is shown on a display screen or is in audio or voice form. It is not tangible; it cannot be touched. Virtual reality and robots might also be considered softcopy devices.

Hardcopy: It refers to printed output. The principal examples are printout, whether text or graphics, from printers, plotters, etc.

Answer:

Also known as CRTs, Monitors, or simply screens differ in size, color, resolution, and video display adapter card. These are used for inputting the data or displaying the information after processing.

Q.17: What is a resolution?

Answer:

All the characters and images on a monitor are made up of dot patterns; the number of dot, or pixels, per inch, determines resolution. The number of pixels in matrix form in an inch is called resolution.

Q.18: Define video display adapters / video graphics card / video controller?

Answer:

It is a circuit board that determines the resolution, number of colors, and speed with which images appear on the display screen. There are different types of graphics cards.

Video Graphics Array, support 16-256 colors, depending on screen resolution. At 320 x 200 pixels, it will support 16 colors and at 640 x 480 pixels, 256 colors. It is called 4-bit color.

Q.1: Define identifiers?

Answer:

Identifiers are the names used to represent variables, constants, types, functions, and labels in the program. Identifiers in C can contain any number of characters, but only the first 31 are significant to C compiler. There are two types of identifiers in C:

Standard identifiers
User-defined identifier

Q.2: What are the standard identifiers?

Answer:

Like reserved words, standard identifiers have special meanings in C, but these can be redefined to use in the program for other purposes, however, it is not recommended. Examples of standard identifiers include printf and scanf.

Q.3: What are user-defined identifiers?

Answer:

The programmer may need to access memory locations for storing data and program results. For this purpose, memory cells are named that are called user-defined identifiers.

Q.4: What is meant by case sensitive language?

Answer:

This means that C compiler considers uppercase and lowercase letters to be distinct characters. For example, the compiler considers Area and area as two different identifiers referring to different memory locations.

Q.5: What are the keywords?

Answer:

Keywords or reserved words are the words, which have predefined meaning in C. There are 32 keywords in C. These cannot be reused or redefined for any other purpose in a C program. They are used by the compiler as an aid to compile the program. They are always written in lowercase.

Q.6: What is meant by strongly typed language?

Answer:

Strongly typed language means that variables in C language must be declared before using them.

Q.7: What are the variables?

Answer:

Variables are named memory locations which are used to store the program’s input data and its computational results during program execution. The value of the variable may change during the program execution. These are created in RAM, therefore the data is stored in them temporarily.

Q.8: What is meant by declaring a variable in C?

Answer:

Variable declaring means to inform the compiler about the name of the variable and the type of data to be stored in it. A variable is declared in C by specifying its type (data type) and name.

Syntax:       data-type   variable_name;
Example: int    area;

Q.9: What is defining a variable?

Answer:

A variable defining means set aside memory location for the data to be stored. It occupies the memory location for the variable to store value.

Q.10: What is initializing a variable?

Answer:

Assigning a value to a variable at the time of its declaration is called initializing a variable. By default, the allocated memory space may contain data meaningless to the program (called garbage).

Example:
int count; (variable declaration and definition)
count = 25; (variable initialization)

Q.11: What is constant?

Answer:

A constant is a quantity whose value cannot be changed during program execution. The define directive can be used to define constant macros, for example:
#define PI            3.142857

Q.12: Define numeric constant?

Answer:

Numeric constants consist of numbers. It can be further divided into integer and floating-point constants. Integer constants do not have a fractional part e.g. +55, -70, etc.
Floating-point constants represent values that are measured e.g. -5.50, 0.78 etc.

Q.13: What is a character constant?

Answer:

A character constant is a single alphabet, a single digit, or a single symbol enclosed within apostrophes e.g. ‘A’, ‘7’ and ‘#’ etc. The maximum length of a character constant is 1 character.

Q.14: What is the data type?

Answer:

The data type defines a set of values and a set of operations on those values. The data is given to the program (variable) as input. The data is processed according to the program instruction and output is returned e.g. int, float, and char, etc.

Q.15: Define standard data types?

Answer:

C provides different types of predefined data types to declare and store data values into variables such as int, float, double, and charetc.
