A Texas Town Is Drinking Recycled Pee Water Because of a Drought [Wtf]

I wouldn't want to live in West Texas right now. Why? Because the Colorado River Municipal Water District, which supplies water to the region, is recycling wastewater (aka pisswater) into tap water. Recycle, reduce, reuse...it never sounded so gross. More »

Architecture or Revolution? Chicago, August 6 (tomorrow!)

2011-08-05T22:42:00.000-07:00

Chicago is a city marked by waves of experimentation and a history of innovation, the genesis of architectural movements and the inspiration for such icons as Wright, Burnham, and van der Rohe. It is not just a city of historical landmarks in search of preservation, but a hub for daring thinkers looking to enter the discussion of today's built environment. This event is one foray into that conversation.

CHART OF THE DAY: The Brand New Scariest Jobs Chart Ever

2011-08-05T22:40:00.000-07:00

We used to say that the chart showing the pace of this jobs "recovery" vs. all other jobs recoveries was the scariest jobs chart ever (see here for example).

But we've since changed our mind.

It's the average duration of unemployment -- which surges without any sign of slowing down -- that's really scary right now. Not only is this number taking off like a rocket, but it potentially represents people permanently and structurally kept out of the jobs market.

Be afraid.

OK, in point of fact, this cool gadget from Matt Bitz of Liquidware could be used for pretty much any type of marksmanship training, but “sniper” was a pretty hard headline to resist. It couples Liquidware’s TouchShield Slide, an Arduino Duemilanove, and a lithium battery-pack in a camouflaged aluminum case for a handy range-gadget that records hits on a target—just tap the touchscreen with the tip of a round to mark a hit—and calculates accuracy and precision in real time. Mayor Dave Bing picks 3 neighborhoods to test reshaping of Detroit

2011-08-05T16:09:00.003-07:00

Bing's citywide plan calls for dividing Detroit into three categories based on a neighborhood's health — steady, transitional and distressed — and then concentrating certain services in those areas. For example, building demolitions would be more common in "distressed" and "transitional" areas, while the healthier "steady" neighborhoods would get more code enforcement and illegal dumping clean-ups.
