The Quick Answer:
Closed-loop Alaska cruise (round-trip from the same U.S. port like Seattle or San Francisco): U.S. citizens do NOT need a passport. You can sail with an official birth certificate plus a valid government-issued photo ID (or a couple of other exceptions described below).

Open-jaw Alaska cruise (different departure and arrival ports): A valid U.S. passport book is required.

Either way: The U.S. State Department strongly recommends all cruise ship passengers carry a valid U.S. passport book regardless of whether it is technically required.

Closed-Loop Alaska Cruises: No Passport Required (With Conditions)

A closed-loop cruise departs from and returns to the same U.S. port. Round-trip Alaska cruises from Seattle are the most common example. Under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), a joint policy from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of State, U.S. citizens on closed-loop cruises can re-enter the United States without a passport book, but you’ll need other documents instead:

According to Customs and Border Protection, adults 16 and older need one of the following:

• A government-issued birth certificate (original or certified copy) plus a valid government-issued photo ID with photo, name, and date of birth, such as a driver’s license. Note that a regular driver’s license proves identity only, not citizenship, which is why you need the birth certificate alongside it.

• A valid U.S. passport book or U.S. passport card.

• A state-issued Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL). The EDL is unique because it serves as both proof of citizenship and proof of identity in a single document. No additional ID is needed alongside it. EDLs are currently issued in Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington State. They are accepted at land and sea border crossings but not for international air travel.

• A Trusted Traveler card such as NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST.

Children under 16 need only proof of citizenship such as an original, notarized, or certified copy of their birth certificate, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Naturalization Certificate. No photo ID is required for this age group.

Important Note: Even on a closed-loop Alaska cruise, your specific cruise line may require a valid passport regardless of WHTI rules. Cruise lines publish their own travel document policies that can be stricter than the government minimum. Always verify requirements directly with your cruise line before you sail.

It’s also worth noting that some White Pass Yukon excursions cross into Canada. If your tour disembarks in Canada or returns by bus, you will need a passport. The shorter, round-trip train excursions that stay on the train typically do not require one.

Open-Jaw Alaska Cruises: A Valid Passport Book Is Required

If your Alaska cruise itinerary starts in one port and ends in a different one, you need a valid U.S. passport book. This includes popular one-way itineraries like Seward (Anchorage) to Vancouver, and Vancouver to Seward.

In practice, open-jaw Alaska cruises require a valid passport book because you will either fly internationally or start/end the cruise in Canada. A passport card is not valid for international flights, and a birth certificate will not get you on a plane home from Vancouver.

Alaska cruisetours, which combine a cruise with overland travel through Denali or the Kenai Peninsula, are almost always open-jaw itineraries. If you’re booking a cruisetour with any cruise line, plan on a valid passport book regardless of the cruise portion.

Passport Requirements by Departure Port

The closed-loop versus open-jaw distinction becomes easier to understand when you look at it through the lens of where your cruise actually starts and ends.

Alaska Cruises from Seattle (Round-Trip) A round-trip Alaska cruise departing from and returning to Seattle is a closed-loop itinerary. U.S. citizens can technically board with a birth certificate and a valid government-issued photo ID. A passport is strongly recommended but not required by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Vancouver Alaska Cruises Roundtrip cruises that depart from Vancouver require U.S. citizens to enter Canada before boarding, which means you need a valid passport to get there in the first place. If you are flying into Vancouver to board your ship, your airline requires a passport for that international flight regardless of what the cruise line says. Plan on a passport book for any itinerary that starts in Vancouver.

Seward or Whittier (One-Way Cruises) These are open-jaw itineraries. You will likely depart from Vancouver to begin your journey and disembark in Alaska, or vice versa. Either way, international air travel is involved and a valid passport book is required.

Why the U.S. State Department (and I) Always Recommend a Passport Anyway

Even if your closed-loop itinerary technically allows you to sail without one, I tell every one of my clients to bring a valid passport book. The U.S. State Department’s official cruise travel guidance states that they strongly recommend all cruise passengers travel with a passport book, even when it is not required by the cruise line. Here’s why that recommendation exists.

Medical Emergency or Hospitalization

If you or someone in your travel party needs to be admitted to a hospital in a Canadian port (Victoria) and cannot return to the ship before it departs, you will need to fly home independently. Without a valid passport, getting on an international flight is not possible. The State Department specifically cites this scenario as a primary reason to always carry your passport book.

Missing the Ship’s Departure

Shore excursions might hit a snag, transportation breaks down, weather delays happen. If you miss the ship at a port of call in Canada, you need to catch up to the ship at its next stop or get yourself home. Either option might require a passport for international travel.

Emergency Medical Evacuation

In a serious medical situation, you may be airlifted to the nearest appropriate facility regardless of where the ship is sailing. That facility could be anywhere in Canada. Getting home from there requires a passport book.

The peace of mind a passport provides is worth more than the cost and time of getting one before you cruise. This is one of those situations where the official minimum and the smart move are two very different things.

Passport Book vs. Passport Card: What’s the Difference?

A U.S. passport book is the standard blue booklet accepted for all forms of international travel, including air, land, and sea. This is the document that solves every scenario.

A U.S. passport card is a wallet-sized card accepted only for land border crossings and sea ports of entry between the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. It is not valid for international air travel under any circumstances.

For a closed-loop Alaska cruise, a passport card counts as a WHTI-compliant document for re-entering the U.S. by sea. But it will not help you in any of the emergency situations described above where air transportation is required.

What About Non-U.S. Citizens?

U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents (Green Card Holders)

If you hold a U.S. green card and are not a U.S. citizen, the WHTI closed-loop exception does not apply to you the same way. You need your valid passport from your country of citizenship plus your Permanent Resident Card. Depending on your nationality, you may also need a Canadian visa or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) for ports in British Columbia. Check the Canadian government’s entry requirements well before your departure date.

Citizens of Other Countries

Foreign citizens need a valid passport from their country of citizenship plus any required visas for both the United States and Canada. Some nationalities need a re-entry visa if they will be leaving and re-entering the U.S. during the cruise. Visa requirements vary significantly by country, and need to be checked for both U.S. requirements as well as Canadian requirements. Cruise lines often clarify what is needed, and a travel advisor (like me!) can help give you the information you need.

Do Children Need a Passport for an Alaska Cruise?

Children follow the same general rules as adults, with one useful simplification for closed-loop cruises: U.S. citizen children under age 16 need only proof of citizenship. An original or certified copy of their birth certificate is sufficient. No photo ID is required for this age group on closed-loop cruises.

Children 16 and older follow adult requirements and need a birth certificate plus photo ID, or another WHTI-compliant document.

That said, if your child doesn’t yet have a passport, I’d encourage getting one before your cruise for the same emergency reasons that apply to adults. A child needing emergency medical care abroad faces the same documentation challenges as any traveler.

One separate note: children under 18 traveling with only one parent, or with someone other than a parent, may need a notarized letter of consent from the absent parent. Cruise lines enforce this independently of passport requirements, so it’s worth sorting out before you get to the port.

Non-U.S. citizens need a valid passport from their country of citizenship. Green card holders also need their Permanent Resident Card. Depending on your nationality, you may need a Canadian eTA or visa in addition to U.S. entry documents. Verify your specific requirements before booking.

Is a passport card enough for an Alaska cruise?

A passport card meets the WHTI re-entry requirements for closed-loop Alaska cruises by sea. But it is not valid for international air travel, so it will not help you if you need to fly home unexpectedly from a Canadian port. A passport book is the better choice.

Can I use a photocopy of my birth certificate for an Alaska cruise?

I would not risk it. CBP explicitly allows photocopies only for children under 15. For adults, cruise line policies vary and some lines require an original or certified copy and will not accept a personal photocopy at boarding. Since documentation requirements can mean the difference between boarding your ship and being turned away with no refund, always bring an original or certified copy of your birth certificate. If you are unsure what your cruise line requires, contact them directly before you sail.

Note: Travel document requirements can change. Always verify current passport and entry requirements with your cruise line, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the U.S. State Department before your departure date.

Nobody really talks about this, but a Mediterranean cruise might be one of the best ways to figure out which parts of Europe you actually want to go back to. You get a taste of different countries like Italy, Greece, Spain, and France, and you leave with a much clearer sense of where you want to spend more time on a future trip. For someone who’s never been to Europe before, that’s invaluable.

But a Mediterranean cruise is also a very specific style of travel, and it’s not the right fit for everyone. Before you book, here are five things worth knowing.

1. You’ll Be in Port Almost Every Day — and That’s a Lot

If your idea of a great cruise involves lazy days on a lounge chair by the pool, the Mediterranean might surprise you. Unlike a Caribbean cruise where sea days are built into the rhythm of the trip, a Mediterranean cruise itinerary is packed. You’re pulling into a new port almost every single day, sometimes docking early in the morning and not returning to the ship until evening.

That’s exciting! But it’s also tiring in a way that sneaks up on you. These are long days on your feet, often in summer heat, moving through crowded historical sites and tourist areas. By the middle of the week, even the most enthusiastic traveler starts to feel it and wish they could just sleep in.

This isn’t a reason not to go. It’s just a reason to go in with the right expectations. A Mediterranean cruise is more of an active, see-everything adventure than a relaxing floating vacation. If you’re okay with that, and a lot of people absolutely love it, then you’re going to have a great time.

2. The Port Isn’t Always Next to the City You’re Visiting

This one catches a lot of first-time Mediterranean cruisers off guard, and it genuinely affects how you plan your port days.

Cruise itineraries are often marketed by the biggest nearby city, but the cruise port itself can be anywhere from a short ride to a full hour away from that city center. When our cruise ship docked for Rome, we were actually in Civitavecchia, about an hour away from the city. For Florence, ships typically dock in Livorno, which adds even more transit time. That travel time eats into your port day in a way that matters when you’re trying to see the Vatican, the Roman Forum, the Trevi Fountain, and still make it back to the ship on time.

My advice for every port on your itinerary, look up exactly where the ship docks and how long it takes to reach the main city. Then plan your day around realistic timing, not the highlight reel version. Some ports really are walkable or a short cab ride from the pier. Others require a train, a bus, or a hired driver.

One tip is to choose these kinds of cities as your embarkation/debarkation point when choosing an itinerary. I actually flew in two days early so I could spend a day in Rome before my cruise departed. We flew in, spent a full day exploring the city without the clock pressure of a port visit, and then boarded the ship the following morning. If your cruise embarks from a major city like Rome or Florence, I’d really encourage you to do the same.

3. Shore Excursions Are Worth It — But Book Them Wisely

With so many ports of call on a Mediterranean cruise, shore excursions are going to be a significant part of your experience. They’re also going to be a significant part of your budget! Booking a tour at every single stop adds up fast, so I’d encourage you to look at your full itinerary ahead of time and decide where you really want a guided experience versus where you’re happy to explore independently.

When you do book excursions, I’d recommend you look carefully at the details for the excursions the cruise line is selling. Ship-sponsored tours can mean huge groups, sometimes an entire bus full of fellow cruisers, which makes it harder to hear your guide, harder to move through crowded sites, and honestly just less enjoyable. I was disappointed with many of my ship-sponsored tours I booked on my Mediterranean cruise.

Lately I’ve been loving Shore Excursions Group, and I recommend them to my clients regularly. What I love about them is that they offer a return-to-ship guarantee so you won’t be left behind if a tour runs long, and they clearly label group sizes as standard, small, or private so you know exactly what you’re signing up for before you book.

Food tours are also worth considering at a few stops if that’s your thing. Eating your way through a port is one of my favorite ways to experience a new place! I did a fabulous food tour in Rome that was memorable and delicious.

4. The Cruise Line You Choose Sets the Vibe

Not all Mediterranean cruises feel the same, and the cruise line you sail with makes a bigger difference here than it might on other itineraries. I sailed with Costa Cruises, which is an Italian-based line, and the experience had a distinctly more international vibe than what most American cruisers might be used to. The ship was beautiful and the itinerary was wonderful, but it’s worth knowing that European cruise lines sometimes have different norms around things like smoking areas and onboard culture.

If you’re looking for something more familiar, lines like Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Celebrity Cruises all run Mediterranean itineraries and tend to cater well to American travelers. Celebrity in particular is a line I appreciate for excellent dining options and a slightly more upscale experience without going full luxury.

On the higher end, Oceania Cruises, Windstar, and Silversea Cruises offer smaller ships with a much more intimate feel, and Silversea is known for bringing Michelin-starred chefs onboard.

Speaking of small ships, a Mediterranean small ship cruise is genuinely worth considering if you want to reach ports that larger ships simply can’t access. Small towns along the Greek islands or the French Riviera look very different when you’re not sharing them with thousands of other passengers from a big ship.

This is honestly one of the areas where working with a travel advisor (like me!) pays off the most. Matching the right cruise line and itinerary to your travel style, whether you want a western Mediterranean cruise focused on Italy, Spain, and France or an eastern Mediterranean cruise through Greece and beyond, makes an enormous difference in whether you come home saying it was the trip of a lifetime or just pretty good.

5. Budget Beyond the Cruise Fare

The cruise fare is just the starting point. By the time you factor in shore excursions at multiple ports, meals or drinks outside of what’s included, gratuities, and any pre or post cruise travel days, the total cost of a Mediterranean cruise vacation can climb quickly. This isn’t unique to Mediterranean cruising, but because you have so many ports, the temptation and opportunity to spend at each one is higher than on other itineraries.

A few things I tell travelers, build your excursion budget before you sail, not as you go. Decide ahead of time which ports are your priority splurges. Look at what your cruise fare actually includes because some lines bundle more than others.

And if you’re comparing a Mediterranean cruise against a land-based vacation through Europe, factor in that a cruise handles all your transportation between cities and accommodation, which can actually make it a strong value depending on how you travel. Not to mention the benefit of not changing hotels every few days.

So Are Mediterranean Cruises Worth It?

For the right traveler, absolutely yes. If you love history, food, and the idea of waking up somewhere new almost every day, a Mediterranean cruise delivers in a way that’s hard to match. And if you’ve never been to Europe before, it’s one of the best ways to get a taste of multiple countries and come home with ideas for where you want to return for a longer trip someday.

It’s probably not the trip for you if you crave slow travel, prefer to go deep on one destination, or really need those relaxing sea days to feel like you’ve actually vacationed. But if you go in knowing what it is, a packed and exhilarating tour of some of the most incredible destinations in the world, it’s absolutely worth it.

Seattle does have two cruise terminals, though, so there can be a bit more on-the-ground navigation to think about before and after your cruise. Another factor with Seattle sailings is the required stop in Victoria. It’s a city I genuinely love, but the port visit is often short and late in the day, which can take away time that might otherwise be spent cruising or in another Alaskan port.

Vancouver cruises tend to be more straightforward once you’re there, with one main cruise terminal and itineraries that don’t require the Victoria stop. At the same time, getting to Vancouver can add extra planning considerations, like flights, passports, and in some cases visas, especially for international travelers.

Port time is another piece of the puzzle that’s easy to overlook. Knowing how long you’ll actually have in each port can make a big difference, especially if you’re hoping to book excursions or really experience the towns you’re visiting.

These are the kinds of itinerary details that can feel small while you’re booking, but they have a real impact on how your trip unfolds. In the guide, I walk through these options in more detail so travelers can choose an itinerary that fits their comfort level, logistics, and travel style.

What’s Worth Planning Ahead and What Isn’t

Alaska cruises can benefit from advance planning more than many other trips, especially when it comes to excursions. Experiences like helicopter tours, glacier landings, and whale watching have limited capacity and are some of the first things to sell out. If those are priorities for you, they’re usually worth booking early.

Flights and hotels also deserve extra attention, particularly if your cruise starts and ends in different cities or if you’re adding time before or after the cruise. Coordinating arrival and departure days, hotel locations, and transfers can make a big difference in how smoothly everything comes together.

There are a few things that typically don’t need to be locked in right away. Dining, spa appointments, and some shorter port activities are often easier to book closer to sailing or even once you’re on board. Knowing where you can stay flexible helps keep planning from feeling all-or-nothing.

When it comes to excursions, it’s also worth looking beyond what’s offered directly through the cruise line. Companies like Shore Excursions Group clearly list group sizes, offer a return-to-ship guarantee, and often provide competitive pricing compared to cruise line tours.

Packing for Alaska’s Unpredictable Weather

Packing for an Alaska cruise is one of the areas where even experienced travelers (like me!) tend to overthink things. Weather can shift quickly, and it’s not unusual to experience cool mornings, rain, sunshine, and wind all in the same day. That’s why packing for Alaska feels a little different than packing for most other cruises.

Here’s the route we took over 9 days in Switzerland, traveling entirely by train with a First-Class Swiss Travel Pass. This pass gave us unlimited train, boat, and bus travel, plus access to some of Switzerland’s most scenic railways.

Day 1 – Geneva (Stay: The Ritz-Carlton Geneva)
Days 2–3 – Zermatt (Stay: Hotel Ambiance Zermatt)
Days 4–5 – Grindelwald (Stay: Boutique Hotel Panorama Grindelwald)

Day 1: Geneva

Our Switzerland adventure began in Geneva, where we landed by train after a few days in Paris, but most US travelers will arrive after an overnight flight. I wanted to visit Geneva so Mia could have a little more experience speaking French before we moved the the German part of Switzerland.

I booked us a one-night stay at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel de la Paix Geneva using Marriott points. The location, right on the edge of Lake Geneva, was perfect for a gentle start before our first big train journey the next morning.

We didn’t try to pack in too much sightseeing. Instead, we grabbed dinner at The Little Kitchen (a total tourist joint but had tasty burgers) along the water, before wandering our way through the old town.

The Old Town, with its cobbled streets and many hills, was worth wandering for a taste of the city’s history. There were some really cute shops but most were closed as we visited after dinner time. We grabbed some surprisingly affordable gelato at Gelatomania before heading back to the Ritz where they pampered Mia with a cocktail and cake to celebrate her high school graduation.

Where to Stay

• The Ritz-Carlton Geneva — Luxury stay with lake views and an easy walk to the Old Town. While the building is old and right on a main street, the location is excellent. And the service is absolutely wonderful! Perfect for using points or for a special splurge before your rail adventure begins. (Check reviews and rates here)

Travel Tip

If your flight arrives early, ask about early check-in so you can freshen up before exploring. Geneva is compact enough to see the highlights in half a day, making it an ideal first stop before heading into the Alps. If your flight arrives early enough, you could certainly plan to head straight into the mountains; however, it can be a risk if there are flight delays or cancellations.

Days 2–3: Zermatt & the Matterhorn

We boarded our first long scenic train ride to Zermatt, a car-free mountain village famous for its views of the Matterhorn. Even the journey in was an experience, with every curve of the track revealing lovely mountain scenes while we kept our eyes out for the iconic Matterhorn peak. We are Disneyland fans you know. :)

Arriving in Zermatt felt like stepping into a postcard — adorable Swiss chalets with flower boxes and that iconic triangular peak in the distance, although it was covered in clouds when we first arrived!

We headed into town and grabbed dinner at du pont where we enjoyed handmade mac n’ cheese. They’re known for their fondue and have an adorable upstairs section if you can get an open table. We came out from dinner to find the skies had cleared and we were gifted one of the most beautiful Matterhorn sunset shows that will forever be remembered by us both.

Our first full day was devoted to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise gondola and hiking. We took the gondola cars up to the viewing platform for panoramic views stretching into Italy and France. Our Swiss Travel Pass did grant us half price for the gondola, but be prepared that these rides are quite pricey!

At the top we walked outside in the freezing temperatures (don’t forget to pack a coat and gloves – even in the summer!), then headed indoors to venture through the ice caves and sculptures. We missed viewing the show in the Cinema Lounge which I regret, so make time for that if it’s something you’d like.

You will find skiers here, even in the middle of summer! There’s a small gift shop and a pay per use toilet (2€) at the top as well. If you don’t need the bathroom right away, you can take the gondola down to the next station where there are complimentary bathrooms.

After making our way back down on the Crystal Ride Matterhorn Glacier gondola — it has a clear floor and costs extra — to Trockener Steg, we continued on another gondola down to Schwarszee. Trockener Steg is a great spot to grab a souvenir, use the bathroom, or even grab a coffee if you need a break.

Then began our hike down toward Zermatt. Midway, we stopped for a long, leisurely lunch at Stafelalp, where the terrace looks out directly at the Matterhorn. It was one of those “how is this real?” travel moments. We actually passed cows grazing with their shepherdess while on the path before lunch and their bells were ringing with the Matterhorn in the background. Iconic!!

On our second day, we rode the Gornergrat Railway, another fun activity for first-time visitors. It’s the highest open-air railway in Europe and the world’s oldest electric cogwheel mountain railway built for tourism. The open views from the train windows made the short ride feel like an attraction in itself. At the top, we explored the trails and hiked down to find the famous Valais black-nosed sheep which are tracked via GPS during the daytime.

This hike was nice starting out from Gornergrat but it became a bit monotonus once we left the lake areas. And some parts seemed hard to follow the trail signs and maps so we ended up on construction roads instead of hiking trails.

I’d perhaps hike down from the top (assuming you’re in shape for mountain hiking) past the mountain lakes and then take the train back down from Riffelberg — with a stop off for the sheep at whichever station they’re closest to when you visit.

Where to Stay

• Hotel Ambiance Zermatt — I stayed in a mid-floor Matterhorn view room here, and while there is some nearby construction that can bring a crane into your line of sight during the day, the views are still incredible in the early mornings and late evenings. Zermatt has quite a few cranes at the moment, so when booking a Matterhorn view room, it’s worth asking your hotel if any construction could affect the view.
  
  Hotel Ambiance is popular with tour groups, but it still is small and local. It feels personal thanks to warm and welcoming customer service. Breakfast was one of the best we had on our entire trip, and if you can, go for a larger room on the top floor to maximize the view, plus they have an elevator! Truly this is a gem of a family-owned hotel just a small walk outside the main town center.
  
  The hotel is a bit of a hike uphill from the center of town, so I recommend hiring an e-cab for your luggage to and from the station. Rooms don’t have a fridge, and toiletries are minimal, so bring your own favorites. (Check reviews & rates here)

Travel Tip

• If you are short on time or budget, you may want to choose between Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and the Gornergrat Railway. Both offer incredible views, but the experiences are different in cost, height, and style of travel (railway vs gondola).
  
  There’s also Jungfraujoch which is the highest railway in Europe and probably one of the most popular mountain top snow/ice experiences in the region. It’s the priciest so we skipped that one. You can buy a Peak2Peak ticket for Matterhorn Glacier and Gornergrat that will save you a little if you want to do both.
  
• When booking Gornergrat tickets, there is a priority boarding option which lets you on first as you’ll want to sit on the right side of the train going up. When the main doors open, it’s quite chaotic during peak tourist season with people racing to get seats and sit on the right side, so be prepared.
  
• For budget-friendly snacks, drinks, and perhaps some wine, the Migros grocery in town is a great stop to save money.

Days 4–5: Grindelwald & Lake Bachalpsee

From Zermatt, we continued east by train into the Jungfrau region, settling into the charming alpine village of Grindelwald. This is the kind of place that makes you slow down, breathe a little deeper, and start planning how you can come back for a longer stay. Surrounded by jagged peaks and green valleys, Grindelwald feels like a Swiss postcard brought to life. Just look at my instagram post for proof!

Our biggest adventure here was taking the First gondola up to the starting point of the Lake Bachalpsee hike. This trail is one of the most photographed in Switzerland — and for good reason. The lake is framed perfectly by snow-capped mountains, and on a calm day, the reflections are pure magic. The gondola ride itself is scenic, and you can also add on the First Cliff Walk, a metal walkway that hugs the cliffside and offers sweeping valley views.

Back in the village, we enjoyed strolling around town, grabbed lunch at Clubhaus Café & Crêperie, and taking in the views from our hotel balcony. Grindelwald makes an ideal base for exploring the Jungfrau region, with easy train connections to nearby Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, and Interlaken.

Where to Stay

• Hotel Panorama Grindelwald — This hotel truly lives up to its name, with breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks from nearly every angle. Rooms are cozy and alpine-inspired, many with balconies perfect for a morning coffee. The location is peaceful although a bit away from the city center. Your reservation comes with free bus service, so that’s an easy way to get up and down from the hotel. (Check reviews & rates here)
  
  I splurged with this hotel and booked us the Grand Suite which had ample space and a wrap around balcony. We spent quite a bit of time outside on our balcony enjoying the scenery at the end of the day.

Travel Tip

• If you plan to hike to Lake Bachalpsee, try to start early in the day. Not only will you enjoy cooler temperatures, but you’ll also have a better chance of seeing the lake’s famous mirror-like reflection before afternoon breezes ripple the water. This trail is quite busy and does have some elevation climb sections – so while it’s considered an easy trail, you still need to be in shape or plan to slowly take your time.
  
• There are a ton of other things to do in this region, and my recommendation is this works as a great “home base” spot for your other daily adventures around the region.

Days 6–7: Wengen, Lauterbrunnen & Murren

From Grindelwald, we took the train deeper into the Jungfrau region and made Wengen our base for the next two nights. Wengen is a car-free village perched above Lauterbrunnen Valley, with sweeping views of the surrounding peaks. It has a quieter, traditional vibe compared to Interlaken, and stepping off the train felt like arriving in a mountain hideaway.

One of our favorite outings was taking the train down into Lauterbrunnen Valley, often called the valley of 72 waterfalls. We visited a small llama farm, hiked behind the famous Staubbach Falls (was a bit of a let down during the summer as you couldn’t feel or see the water), visited the Trümmelbach Waterfalls (an UNESCO World Heritage Site with an admission fee), and wandered through the postcard-perfect valley floor.

Another day, we rode the cable car up the other side of the valley to Mürren, a tiny clifftop village that feels worlds away from the bustle of the lower towns. From Mürren, the views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains are some of the best in Switzerland. Unfortunately the day we visited was a rainy day, so our views were limited.

We also squeezed in a visit to Interlaken, though it felt more like a transportation hub than a destination for us. The contrast made us appreciate the charm of the smaller mountain towns even more. Interlaken does have famous boat tours around the lakes, which is included in your Swiss Travel Pass. We had a relaxing bite to eat at a hidden grotto spot, Pier One, near one of the boat harbors.

Where to Stay

• Hotel Jungfraublick — Wengen offers a few hotels with classic alpine charm. Staying here gives you access to Lauterbrunnen, Mürren, and Jungfraujoch excursions, while feeling a bit less crowded. This hotel was very simple and basic in regard to the rooms, but staff were friendly and the views of the mountains from top floors were excellent. (Check reviews & rates here)
• Grand Hotel Belvedere — if you’re looking to splurge and stay at a luxe hotel with a nice location near the train station, this one is for you. It’s tucked up on a private drive with some amazing views! (Check reviews & rates here)
  
  Keep in mind that while the setting is beautiful, the logistics of moving around the region can eat into your day. Any time we wanted to do something, we had to wait for a train down from Wengen to Lauterbrunnen. I’d recommend staying four nights at Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald for your stay in the Jungfrau region instead of moving around and instead of staying in one of the higher mountain towns (Mürren or Wengen).

Travel Tip

• If you plan to visit Trümmelbach Waterfalls, it’s a bit outside of the main town area. Buses regularly run on a loop around the town to the falls, so if you have a Swiss Travel Pass, take advantage of hopping on the bus for free. It also has an admission fee and a lot of stairs.

Days 8–9: Lucerne & Farewell

Our last stop was Lucerne, a lakeside city that feels both historic and vibrant. After days in small mountain villages, it was fun to return to a place with lively streets, waterfront promenades, and easy day-trip options.

We chose Lucerne over Zurich for our final city stay, however some may choose to stay in Zurich if you’re flying out of that airport. We actually flew out of Frankfurt on Condor business class (which I booked with points!), so it was easy to choose Lucerne since the train bookings weren’t that hard to manage.

We started with a visit to the Lion Monument, a stone fountain memorial to the Swiss Guards who were killed during the French Revolution. It’s one of the city’s most famous landmarks, and an easy walk from the city center. From there, we continued to the Museggmauer/Musegg Wall (castle wall) and climbed into the towers for sweeping views over the city and Lake Lucerne.

Back in the Old Town, we spent time wandering the streets and walking across the covered bridges. One of my favorite moments was Mia choosing a custom Swiss Army Knife as a souvenir. It’s a simple but lasting memento of the trip, and a uniquely Swiss keepsake that feels more meaningful than a t-shirt or magnet. That evening we had dinner at Restaurant Caravelle, a cozy Italian restaurant spot near the Lion monument.

Unfortunately, rain changed some of our plans for our final day in the city. We had hoped to ride the cogwheel train up Mount Pilatus and try the alpine slide, as well as take a lake cruise, but decided to save those for another trip since it was cloudy and rainy. Even with the weather, Lucerne was a lovely way to end our journey, offering a balance of culture, history, and lakeside relaxation.

Where to Stay

• Hotel Beau Séjour Lucerne — This boutique-style hotel is set along the lakefront, about 10 minutes from Lucerne’s Old Town (they provide a free bus pass for guests if you don’t want to walk). It has a welcoming, stylish feel, with bright rooms and an modern charm. All the rooms are different as it seems to be an old mansion turned into a hotel. We had originally added breakfast onto our room rate, however, found it to lack hot foods and protein dishes so asked for the charge to be removed and grabbed breakfast at a cafe in town instead. Travel Tip

• Lucerne is a great city to add on at the end of a Switzerland itinerary, especially if you want still want a mountain top adventure (like Pilatus) or if you want to do a lake cruise. Its compact size makes it easy to see in a couple of days, and it has frequent train connections to Zurich, where most international flights depart.

What I’d Do Differently

Looking back, this itinerary gave us an incredible mix of cities, mountain towns, and scenic train rides. But if I were to plan it again, I would make one key change: spend less time switching hotels and more time based in one spot within the Jungfrau region.

While Wengen was beautiful, the logistics of going up and down the valley for day trips made it feel like we were spending too much time in transit. Next time, I would probably choose Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen as our base for 4 nights. From there, it’s simple to take the train or cable cars to places like Wengen, Mürren, and Interlaken without the constant packing and moving.

Mürren in particular is magical, but it felt too isolated to use as a base for exploring. I’d keep it as a day trip rather than an overnight stay.

Overall, I wouldn’t change the start or finish of our route — Geneva was an easy entry point, Zermatt was spectacular, and Lucerne worked well for airport logistics. But condensing the middle section into fewer hotel changes would have made the trip more relaxed and left us with extra time to soak in the views instead of juggling train timetables.

Another thing I’d mention is that if you’re really interested in specific hikes and lake views, research those in advance and book hotels in towns near the hikes.

Mia really wanted to do the Oeschinensee lake hike, however we discovered that from Grindelwald or even Interlaken we’d spend hours on trains to reach the start of the hike, so we skipped that. Many of the hikes around Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen are pretty busy so if hiking is important, research your hikes then book your hotels based on those starting points.

I’ll also say that the beauty of Swizerland in my opinion is in their mountain towns. If I was helping a friend book a trip, I’d tell them to spend the least amount of time possible in the cities and instead to plan more time in the mountain towns. I think mix of a more popular town with a more unknown mountain town near one special hike would be the optimal use of time. I’d also make a boat lake cruise in Interlaken or Lucerne more of a priority; however, Mia does not enjoy those so we skipped it.

This remote lodge is only accessible by boat and has just eight cabins, which makes it feel private and exclusive. It’s the kind of place where you can completely unplug, enjoy amazing meals, and spend your days surrounded by nature. During my stay I tried a mix of unique activities, relaxed on the beach, and soaked up the peaceful island setting. And we capped our trip with a fjord boat tour that turned out to be one of the most unforgettable experiences I’ve had in Alaska.

Getting to Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge

What I loved about Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge is how it manages to feel completely remote while still being pretty accessible from Seward. From Anchorage, it’s about a two-hour drive down the scenic Seward Highway, and most cruisers either book a shuttle transfer or ride the Alaska Railroad for a relaxed, scenic trip.

The lodge is only accessible by water, so you’ll board a Kenai Fjords Tours boat that takes you across Resurrection Bay to Fox Island. The ride itself is part of the experience, with rugged coastline and open water that instantly sets the tone for your stay. By the time you step off the boat, you already feel like you’ve arrived somewhere special.

How Long to Stay

The lodge requires a two-night minimum stay, and because there are only eight cabins, it does book up far in advance. I think two to three nights is ideal for most travelers, since that gives you enough time to try the activities, enjoy the peaceful setting, and still make it work around a cruise itinerary. Some guests choose to stay longer — up to five nights — if they really want to slow down and immerse themselves in island life.

I also heard that many guests choose this as a stop before or after continuing up to Denali. A stay here truly is an opportunity to relax and unplug. I took a nap for the first time in forever! You’ll put the deadlines and inboxes to the side and enjoy a relaxed day where the biggest question is what time you need to be at the lodge for lunch or dinner.

The Lodge Experience

Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge is small and intimate. Each of the eight cabins feels rustic yet comfortable, with simple furnishings that fit the setting. Rooms feature a bed (or two), a couch, vanity sink, and a bathroom with toilet and shower. There is one four-plex cabin with ocean view and lagoon view rooms, and two duplex cabins with views of both the ocean and lagoon.

My cabin looked out over the lagoon, and while I would have loved the sweeping bay view with gentle ocean sounds, those view cabins also are along the walkway, so you’ll hear people walking past your cabin on the rocks. The lagoon view rooms are probably the quietest option. I was in the four-plex cabin that was next to the lodge and found that location very convenient. Cabins farther down the beach are still in easy walking distance, but do feel a bit more detached from the main lodge.

One thing to know is that the cabins don’t have outlets, which really drives home the unplugged atmosphere. If you need to charge your phone or camera, there are outlets in the main lodge. Wi-Fi and cell signal is extremely limited, so most guests find themselves leaning into the break from screens. Water temperature in the cabins is also a bit tricky to manage, so plan on taking quick showers.

Meals are included with your stay, and the food is a highlight. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in the main lodge, and each meal is freshly prepared with local and seasonal ingredients. Options for lunch included grilled cheese, chicken salad sandwiches, salads, and soups. And dinner options included salmon, halibut, steak, and mushrooms with amazing sides. You will certainly not feel like you’re roughing it when you sit down to eat.

Alcoholic drinks are not included with your stay, but there is a nice selection available to purchase. We enjoyed some delicious cocktails as well as sharing a bottle of wine during our stay.

The atmosphere at the lodge is relaxed and welcoming, but not overly social. With only a handful of guests staying at a time, it feels intimate without being socially forced. During my stay there was an extended family, another small group, and my own party; and while we chatted here and there, most people spent their time enjoying the lodge at their own pace. You can choose to mingle over meals or simply soak in the quiet, whether that’s reading by the fire in the main lodge, listening to the waves outside the lodge, or even by taking a nap in your cabin.

Activities at Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge

What really surprised me was how much there was to do right on the island, but I also never felt like I was missing out on anything. The schedule changes a bit day to day, but most guests find a mix of structured activities and downtime that lets them truly relax.

Included Activities

During my stay, there were options like guided wilderness hikes, a sound bath meditation, a paint-and-sip session, and even sea bathing followed by warming up in the sauna. Beach walks are always available, and some guests tried fishing from the shore.

The artist in residence was on vacation during my stay so we self-guided ourselves with our paintings and I’m pretty happy with how my landscape came out. I also wasn’t sure how sound bathing would work since I’ve never done it, but by the end I was almost asleep and have no clue where the time went from minute 5 to 25. :)

If you do choose to fish while on the island, make sure to buy an Alaskan fishing license beforehand as you can’t buy them on the island. One of the fellow guests caught a silver salmon while fishing on shore! The staff cooked it up for his family and he shared some of the catch with us – yum!

The Kenai Fjords Northwestern Fjord Boat Tour at the end of your stay is also included – and it was such a highlight! I wasn’t sure what to expect but was really impressed with the tour. I’ve never seen glaciers up close like we did on that tour. More on that later!

Optional Add-On

While most activities are included, sea kayaking costs extra and is booked with Sunny Cove Kayaking. It was absolutely worth it! The guides, James and Drew, led us around two sides of Fox Island and shared information about the island and wildlife. From the water, we spotted puffins, sea stars, and incredible views of the island’s shoreline. It was such a different perspective compared to walking along the beach.

Time to Unplug

Of course, not every moment has to be filled with activities. Many guests spend their afternoons curled up with a book, strolling the beach, or just soaking in the scenery. That balance of active outdoors and relaxation is what made my stay at Fox Island so memorable. As a mom of two college-age daughters who owns her own business, I’m usually plugged in all the time. Having a few hours with nothing to do but listen to the waves felt like a gift.

Kenai Fjords Northwestern Boat Tour

One of the best parts of staying at Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge is that the adventure doesn’t end when you check out. As part of the package, guests board the Kenai Fjords Northwestern Fjord Boat Tour, which turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip. When we checked out, we just left our packed bags by the cabin doors and headed to breakfast at 8:30. After breakfast we were taken to the dock just in time to catch the boat around 9:20 am.

The boat tour takes you deep into Kenai Fjords National Park, where you’ll see small islands dotted around the sea, amazing blue glaciers, and an incredible amount of wildlife. On our tour we spotted puffins, sea otters, Steller sea lions, and more seabirds than I could count. The biggest thrill was seeing a humpback whale surface and watching glaciers calve into the bay right in front of me — those moments really remind you just how special Alaska is.

A light breakfast (cinnamon rolls) and lunch (quinoa burrito with chips) is included with the tour, and the boat also sells drinks and snacks (including alcoholic options), which makes it easy to relax and enjoy the day. The ride itself is several hours long, so you’ll want to bring a camera, binoculars, and layers to keep warm on the deck.

I spent very little time in my seat until the end of the cruise – the first few hours you’ll be outside on the decks. We also had an amazing captain who had a clear voice and gave me such an appreciation for the area and wildlife. Who knew puffin weren’t really that cool?… :)

Why Add Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge to Your Alaska Cruise

An Alaska cruise is already an incredible way to see the state’s coastline, but spending a few days at Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge takes the experience to a whole new level. The lodge gives you the chance to slow down, unplug, and actually live in the wilderness instead of just sailing past it.

For me, the boat tour on checkout day was the closest I’ve ever been to glaciers and to so much wildlife at once. On a typical cruise ship you might see these sights from a distance, but being on a smaller tour boat makes it all feel more immersive and personal. Watching a humpback whale surface right in front of us and seeing glaciers calve into the water was something I’ll never forget.

Looking back, everything about this place just worked – the cozy setup, incredible meals, and those wildlife moments I’m still thinking about. If you’re looking to add something special to your Alaska cruise that feels both luxurious and genuinely wild, this little island is exactly what you want.

As someone who already loves nature and lives in the Pacific Northwest, I didn’t expect to be so blown away. But Alaska has a way of making even seasoned travelers awestruck by nature in the best possible way.

I was planning to meet my daughter in Paris so we could start a train trip around Switzerland. I wanted to fly business class to make the long-haul flight more comfortable, but I also wanted to use points to save some cash for the expensive Switzerland trip!

There was a transfer bonus at the time, so I moved 64,000 American Express Membership Rewards points to British Airways Avios, then converted those to Finnair Avios. My SEA–HEL–CDG business class ticket ended up costing 82,500 points plus $151 in taxes.

It felt like the perfect combination of a comfortable trip and a smart points redemption. I’d never flown Finnair and wanted to see how their unique AirLounge seat matched up to my other business class experiences.

Check-In & Lounge

I arrived at SEA airport about three hours before my 5:40 pm flight, mostly because of traffic and ride arrangements. The Finnair counters were empty, so check-in was quick. Finnair is located towards the south end of the airport (nearest to checkpoints 1 &2). I have CLEAR and TSA PreCheck, which made security a breeze.

SEA was surprisingly quiet for an evening international departure, so I had plenty of time to relax before boarding.

Lounge Access

With my Finnair business class ticket, I had access to the British Airways Lounge in the S satellite concourse. It’s a nice perk to enjoy a drink or snack before boarding, as well as easy access to plug outlets to ensure all my devices were charged.

I should mention that Finnair is a oneworld alliance member, so my oneworld Emerald status and Finnair boarding pass (any class) would also grant me access to any of the Alaska lounges at SEA (C, D, N concourses), but since I was flying out of S gates, it made sense to settle into the BA lounge since I had never visited that lounge before. I’m an Alaska Lounge+ member, so I’m very familiar with the Alaska lounges, as well as being an Amex platinum card holder so I have access to the Centurion Lounge and Priority Pass (The Club) lounges as well at SEA.

The British Airways lounge at SEA was recently renovated and while the space is pretty small, it felt clean and had nice seats, with ample charge ports. The food offerings were small but somewhat better than The Club lounge next door; with a few different hot and cold options. There was also a full bar which is the centerpeice to the lounge.

I will say that in my opinion the view of this lounge is pretty ‘meh’ with a large roof extending below the windows and not allowing an open view feel – but you can spot some planes taking off (sort of). Bathrooms seemed surprisingly basic and I didn’t check out the shower(s) but I believe there is at least one.

Boarding

Boarding was slightly delayed, and there wasn’t much communication about it. The lounge told us it was time to board so I headed down, but then the gate agents told me boarding was delayed for another 10-15 minutes. Since the British Airways Lounge was close to the gate, I just headed back there for another 15 minutes before returning. Even with the delay, I still got to the gate early.

Once boarding started, business class passengers were invited to board after special assistance passengers. The gate was a bit of a clogged mess and I was at the end of the business class boarders, with regular passengers standing directly in front of the gate agents who were doing passport checks well ahead of the boarding pass scanner. This was a bit frustrating and I wish they had clear lanes for boarding and check-in, but oh well. Your passport was checked with your boarding pass prior to scanning your pass to board.

The Seat: Finnair A330 AirLounge

Finnair’s A330 business class is home to their unique AirLounge seat. It’s different from most business class seats because it doesn’t recline like a typical lie-flat. Instead, it’s designed like a wide lounge chair where you can adjust your position with pillows and padding until it’s comfortable for sitting, lounging, or lying flat when you pop up the lower flaps.

I’ll admit, I was curious if I’d like it. The pros? It feels spacious and fairly private, with plenty of room to stretch your legs. The seat itself is wide and open, and the fixed shell design makes it feel cozy without being cramped. For flyers who want to sit criss cross, this seat allows for that.

The cons? If you’re someone who loves adjusting recline angles mid-flight, this doesn’t really allow for that. This seat does not recline and so it doesn’t lay flat. It’s also a bit firm in some spots, so using the provided mattress pad is a must. I found the hinge spots for the pop up recliner to be awkwardly placed and when I tried to lay down or semi-reclined, it pushed into my hip and wasn’t the most comfortable.

I’ll also note that since the back of the seat doesn’t recline, when you do lay down flat with your legs out in front of you, the seatbelt that used to be at your hips, now will hit you around your chest or armpits. I find that one of the oddest parts of this design — staying buckled while sleeping means a belt up high across your chest. And if you’re on the left side of the plane you will lay on your left side with your legs bent when you do lay down (if you’re tall — I’m 5’9″). The other side of the plane would be the reverse I would think; so you’d lay on your right side.

Overall, I found it comfortable enough to catch a few hours of sleep for the overnight flight, and it definitely stands out compared to other business class seats. I’ll be honest and say that I wouldn’t jump at booking it again, however also wouldn’t avoid flying it.

The A330 business class cabin has 28 AirLounge seats arranged in a 1–2–1 layout, so everyone gets direct aisle access. There are two lavatories at the front of the cabin. I would avoid 1D & 1H if possible due to the galley/lavatory curtain access being right next to the aisle opening for those seats.

I was in seat 3A, a window seat that felt a bit private thanks to the shell design, but the seats do not have a door and the seats are close to the aisle with the table and storage next to the window. This seat design does have a nice cubby under the window that was perfect for my laptop, iPad, and in-flight bag of essentials like cords and personal care. Noise in the cabin was minimal, and being away from the galley and lavs made it a quiet spot for the flight.

Your seat does come with a very minimal marimekko amenity kit which included ear plugs, an eye mask, humble brush bamboo toothbrush with toothpaste, inside a small bag. There were felt slippers provided as well, which I used for my entire vacation.

Entertainment & Wi‑Fi

For entertainment, the seat has a sharp fixed 18‑inch touchscreen. You control it using the panel, or there’s a small hidden remote tucked in the side storage cubby beside your shoulder. Just be aware when the remote is out, that compartment has to stay open (but it doesn’t really so the cord gets smooshed). The onboard system offers a solid selection, over 100 movies and about 50 TV series, plus music, games, and a flight map that includes forward and downward views.

Headphones are provided and offer decent noise cancellation. Business class tickets include one hour of free Wi‑Fi (and Finnair Plus Platinum members get full-flight access). After that, you can purchase more time, usually around €8–9 for another hour or around €20 to cover the whole flight. It worked well for light browsing and messaging. I enjoyed watching a few movies and watching the flight map during the trip.

Food & Drinks

Once I was settled in, the crew offered a welcome drink — Finnair’s signature blueberry juice, sparkling wine, or water. I went with the blueberry juice, which is a Finnair tradition, as well as the sparkling wine, thinking I’d make myself a bit of a bellini.

Service started shortly after takeoff with drink service and nuts. My dinner meal included two cold plates. The first was mozzarella with chutney (peach, raisin, pecan, ginger, caper berries). The second was chicken mousse with bread, yellow beet salad, and raspberry sauce. personally I didn’t care for either of these but ate some of the beet salad and chutney.

For the main course, the options were roasted beef with creamy Parmesan polenta, tomatoes, broccolini, carrots, and peppercorn sauce; grilled salmon with potatoes, green beans, brussels sprouts, and beurre blanc sauce; or plant-based kafta with couscous, piperade, grilled zucchini, and roasted red pepper sauce. I went with the salmon and it was surprisingly ok although the vegetables were unseasoned and basic.

Dessert was cheese and supposed to be a choice of spiced pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting or passionfruit mousse with mango. But turns out they didn’t have the pumpkin cake option and I was instead given a tiramisu type dessert.

Before landing, breakfast was served. The single option was a mushroom, potato, and chorizo frittata; served with yogurt and fresh fruit, and a small plate of meat and cheese. I asked for double fruit since I can’t eat mushrooms and they were happy to accommodate me.

Service

The crew was efficient and friendly throughout the flight. Service felt professional and pleasant, but not overly attentive. Additional drinks or refills were offered only during meal service, so I had to use the call button when I wanted tea and then more coffee. It wasn’t a problem, but it’s worth knowing if you’re used to a more high-touch service style. Although I feel this is fairly common with business class flights, especially when it’s overnight.

Lounges in Helsinki

We landed on time in Helsinki, and since I was connecting to Paris (Schengen) I decided to check out both Finnair lounges. First, I trekked over to the non‑Schengen Business Lounge (it’s a bit of a walk from the gate we landed at and has to be done before border control into the Schengen area). It’s the larger lounge, about 16,000 sq ft with seating for up to 450 guests. Since I hold oneworld Emerald status, I was given access to the Platinum Wing, which is half the size and felt quietly upscale. I planned to use a shower, but they were all in use. I only spent about 20 minutes there before heading through customs to the Schengen side.

Once through, I visited the Schengen Business Lounge, which fits up to 440 people across roughly 9,000 sq ft and again was given access to the Platinum Corner, which was a separated area. This tucked-away section was small but comfortable, and busy but not crowded.

The food was minimal, mostly salads and local bites, but the vibe was calm. I was able to use a shower in the Schengen lounge and it was well-stocked with SEES (a Finnish brand) shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap, lotion, as well as a shower cap, toothbrush, and toothpaste. It was a great refresh before my short hop to Paris. I do think the showers in the non-Schengen lounge would be a bit nicer and more spacious.

Overall Verdict

Flying Finnair’s A330 business class from Seattle to Helsinki was a good experience and a nice use of points. The AirLounge seat is unique — it’s not my favorite business class seat, but it worked well for the overnight flight. I was especially thankful for the mattress pad, which made a a bit of a difference in comfort.

Service was friendly, the food had nice Finnish touches, and the lounges in Helsinki (especially the Platinum areas) were a calm space and nice perk during my layover. I would likely fly Finnair again, especially if I could book it with points, but I’d go in knowing the seat design takes some getting used to.

While my flights went smoothly in the air, my booking did involve some customer service patience. When I wanted to adjust my trip after a small schedule change, it took 1 hour and 10 minutes on hold with the U.S. service line before my call was answered. The upside is that Finnair allowed me to change to a better travel date at no extra cost due to the schedule change – but I did have to find availability of the saver fare I had originally booked which was 3 days earlier than my initial booking.

Slightly before my trip, a Helsinki ground crew strike was announced. These strikes seem to happen periodically, and while my outbound Seattle flight was unaffected, my Helsinki–Paris flight was eventually canceled. Finnair told me when I called (a two-hour hold that time) that they wouldn’t know cancellations until about two days before the strike. They also explained that once a flight is officially canceled, rebooking options open up.

I wasn’t officially notified of my Paris flight cancellation until one day before departure, but within 90 minutes of that cancellation email, Finnair had automatically rebooked me onto an earlier flight to Paris the same day. It wasn’t the schedule I’d hoped for as I didn’t get my planned layover time in Helsinki, but I still arrived in Paris on time (earlier than scheduled actually) with absolutely no real disruption to my travels.

When Can I Buy a Magic Key?

Beginning May 20, 2025 – Inspire and Believe Magic Key passes will be available for purchase. Note, the current promotions do not mention that Enchant or Imagine (SoCal only) Keys will be available for purchase.

This is big news since the original Enchant Key, which is what I have and is the lowest-priced Key other than the Southern California resident option, will finally be available for sale again. Here’s what to know about buying a Magic Key Disneyland annual pass, what’s the price, and when are the blackout dates.

If you’re not sure which Magic Key you should buy, I’ve created a useful colorful calendar that shows the different prices, discounts, and blackout dates to help you decide.

Magic Key passes are back on sale on May 20th, 2025, no earlier than 9 am PT. There is a whole page of Magic Key buying tips from Disneyland. It includes making sure you sign into your account and enter the buying waiting room no earlier than 8:45 am on the sales date.

All four Magic Key options will be available for sale so you’ll want to know in advance which Magic Key pass you want to buy. I’ll help you decide that with the details below. It seems that the passes will be available to purchase online and at the ticket booths.

When you want to buy a Magic Key pass, you’ll be placed in a virtual queue. When your waiting time is over, you’ll have 10 minutes to purchase your Key. Expect LONG waits. When I bought my Key when they first went on sale, I waited approximately 6 hours to be able to purchase my Key.

And there is good news for those of us who are planning any trips and already have tickets and reservations. You can exchange your current tickets for a Magic Key. For example, I’m planning to visit the parks in September for Disneyland Halloween and I’ll be able to credit my park ticket towards a Magic Key pass on my final day in the parks. (no data point on this for these 2025 sales)

However! I do expect some of the Keys to sell out and that Disneyland will likely stop selling them again after they reach a certain number of purchases. With the way Enchant Keys have been only available for renewal, I suspect those keys might sell out the quickest. For May 20, 2025, only the Inspire and Believe Magic Keys will be available for purchase.

To upgrade a park ticket to a Magic Key, you’ll visit the ticket booths at Disneyland before the end (close) of your last day’s visit. What you paid for that ticket will be applied towards the cost of whichever Magic Key you choose to purchase. But, do keep in mind that some or all Keys may sell out.

When you buy your Magic Key, it doesn’t become active until your first use (parking does not count). So even if you buy a Key on January 10th, your annual year start date doesn’t begin until your first use/park entry. However, you do need to use it within one year of purchase.

What IS the Disneyland Magic Key?

What Disneyland is calling a Magic Key is essentially the same program as their old Annual Passes. I’m actually shocked at how they’re pretty similar to what Disneyland was selling before. When you buy a Magic Key, you’ll be able to visit Disneyland multiple times a year for that one price. There are blackout dates when some Magic Key passes won’t be eligible.

It’s also important to note that the Magic Key program will require a park reservation to be made. This is standard for how Disneyland is running its current ticket system. Park reservations with a Magic Key will be available 90 days in advance.

Before closing its old annual pass system, Disneyland had a Flex Pass which also required park reservations in advance. It’s no surprise to see Disney is sticking with the reservation system as it gives them a good idea of what to expect each day for crowd levels and what they’ll need for staffing.

With reservations being required, you will need to do some advanced planning. And for some locals, I can see that using their Magic Key might be less convenient than the old annual passes where they could just hop into the parks whenever they want.

Keep in mind that Magic Key annual passes are like Park Hopper tickets. You can visit both parks in a single day. You’ll make a park reservation for the day you want to visit one park or both parks. If you want to visit both parks, you have to book to start at one park and you’ll be able to hop over to the other park after 11 am.

What are the Magic Key Options & How Much Do They Cost?

Ok, so now here we’re going to get down to the details about the Disneyland Magic Key passes. As I said above, there are four pass options. However, one of the passes, Imagine Key, is only available to Southern California residents.

One of the stand-out features besides blockout dates and discounts you’ll want to consider is how many reservations you can hold at one time. When they talk about how many park reservations you can “hold” it means that you’re able to make a park reservation for that many days at a time.

So if you can hold 6 reservations, you can reserve 6 single dates throughout the open 90-day window. If you can hold 4 reservations, you’ll only be able to have 4 dates reserved at a time.

When you make your reservation for the day, you’ll choose which park you want to visit. Which park(s) are available for your date will be noted on the availability calendar. Disneyland is noted with a pink castle, and California Adventure is noted with a teal Mickey wheel.

If reservations aren’t available on your date you’ll see a circle with a line through it – you also see this for dates you hold reservations for already. And if you’re blocked out, you’ll see a slash line through the date.

Inspire Key – $1749

This is the Mercedes Benz class of Magic Keys. It’s the best pass you can get and comes with limited blackout dates. You can visit almost any day of the year, including weekends, except for a few days and weeks during the December holidays. But remember, a reservation has to be made in advance. This pass also includes the best park discounts and free standard theme park parking for one vehicle.

Also, keep in mind that entry is not guaranteed just because you’re a key holder. You will need to make reservations and availability may be limited. Reservations are available 90 days in advance.

• Reservation-based admission to one or both theme parks. (~10 blockout dates for 2025)
• Hold up to 6 theme park reservations at a time for different dates
• 25% off the purchase of Lightning Lane Multi Pass
• Unlimited Disney PhotoPass digital photo downloads
• Up to 20% off select merchandise
• Up to 15% off select dining
• Standard theme park parking included (excluding blockout dates, at the Mickey & Friends Parking Structure, Pixar Pals Parking Structure and Toy Story Parking Area)

Believe Key – $1374

For a savings of almost $400, you can get the Believe Key pass, but you’ll step down on some benefits. The Believe Key pass has more blackout dates, less of a discount in the parks (10% off instead of 20% & 15%), and only 50% off parking. If you like to visit Disneyland on the weekends, this pass or the Inspire Key are your best options.

The Inspire and the Believe Key passes are also the only two passes that offer you the chance to hold 6 reservations at a time. If you like to plan for 3-day vacations, this would allow you to have two 3-day trips reserved at a time. The Believe and Inspire Keys also are the only Keys with Disney PhotoPass included, perfect for those of you who love getting your photo taken around the parks.

• Reservation-based admission to one or both theme parks most days of the year (~50 blockout dates for 2025).
• Hold up to 6 theme park reservations at a time
• 25% off the purchase of Lightning Lane Multi Pass
• Unlimited Disney PhotoPass digital photo downloads
• 10% off select merchandise
• 10% off select dining
• 50% off standard theme park parking (excluding blockout days, and available for purchase at Mickey & Friends Parking Structure, Pixar Pals Parking Structure and the Toy Story Parking Area)

Enchant Key – $974

If you don’t live in Southern California, this will be your cheapest option for a Magic Key pass. It’s a step down from the Believe Key and comes with many more blockout dates, including all Saturdays, smaller discount on parking only at the Toy Story lot, and no PhotoPass. You’ll also only be able to hold 4 park reservations at a time.

Summertime visitors will likely want to avoid this pass unless you like to visit at the end of August. You’ll also be excluded from many weekend dates and holidays.

• Reservation-based admission to one or both theme parks select days of the year (~141 blockout dates mostly in the summer, weekends, and Nov/Dec holidays).
• Hold up to 4 theme park reservations at a time
• 25% off the purchase of Lightning Lane Multi Pass
• 10% off select merchandise
• 10% off select dining
• 25% off standard theme park parking at the Toy Story Parking Area only (excluding blockout dates)

Imagine Key (SoCal Pass only) – $599

The Imagine Key is only available for Southern California Residents living in zip codes 90000 to 93599. This pass is the most limited and comes with the most blackout dates as well as the least number of reservations. Be sure not to confuse the best Key, Inspire, with this limited Imagine Key.

• Reservation-based admission to one or both theme parks select days of the year (~201 blockout dates, mostly summer, weekends, and all of December).
• Hold up to 2 theme park reservations at a time
• 25% off the purchase of Lightning Lane Multi Pass
• 10% off select merchandise
• 10% off select dining
• 25% off standard theme park parking at the Toy Story Parking Area (excluding blockout dates)

Dream Key – $1399 (Discontinued)

The Dream Key is no longer being sold.

** note there is some fine print with each of these Magic Key options, so be sure you have reviewed the fine print at Disneyland.com. There is a no-show clause that will encourage people to use their reservations or cancel in advance.

California residents (all CA residents) will also have the opportunity to pay for their Magic Key in a payment plan over the year with a small down payment.

Magic Key Calendar Blackout Dates Comparison

While each Key has its own blockout calendar, I knew that when comparing the different key types it makes more sense to be able to look at the months matched up as that’s how people will be planning their trips. I created this blockout calender comparison to help you compare the Inspire Key versus the Believe Key versus the Enchant Key versus the Imagine Key.

Hopefully, this calendar comparison chart will help you figure out the best Magic Key pass for you based on what your upcoming Disneyland vacation plans are.

Which Magic Key Annual Pass Should I Get?

Only you can truly answer that, however, I have a few tips you should consider.

If money is not a factor and you want to visit multiple times a year including during the holidays, the Inspire Key is probably your best option. This also comes with free parking, making it likely an ideal pass for a local who visits often and drives to the park. The discount on dining and merchandise will also be a great perk for a true Disney fan who likes to shop and eat when visiting the parks.

For a SoCal resident who is happy visiting the parks after work during the week, the Imagine Key is an affordable option to get your Disney fix. With ~200 blockout dates, you’d likely miss many of the peak seasonal events, however with two days of reservations available it would be easy for those middle-of-the-week visits.

So what’s left to decide between is the Believe versus the Enchant. What will that extra $400 get you? Well, the main difference is double the number of blockout dates. If you need to visit during the main summer months of June and July, you’ll need to fork over the extra money for the Believe.

The extra $400 also gets you 6 reservation dates with the Believe versus just 4 with the Enchant. The Believe also comes with 50% off parking, but both passes offer 10% off for certain shopping and dining venues.

When comparing the cost of Disneyland tickets, you can see that you need to be planning for multiple visits each year to make an annual pass, AKA Magic Key, worth the expense. If I was planning three 3-day trips in a year then I’d likely purchase the Believe Key and it would save me money by the last trip.

But if the blockout dates fit with my travel plans (i.e. don’t need weekends or holidays) then the Enchant Key would be a good deal. A 2-day park hopper ticket from Get Away Today costs $404, so the Enchant Key at $974 would offer big savings if I was planning three 2-day trips, again assuming the blockout calendar fits my travel plans.

There are some added perks for Magic Key holders, which I’ll mention below that might help push you over the tipping point if you’re doing the math.

In this post I’m sharing my exact long haul flight outfit formula and favorite picks for every piece. Whether you’re facing a long plane ride cross-country or a long distance flight overseas, the right clothing choice makes all the difference in your air travel experience. Affiliate links are included.

My Long Haul Flight Outfit Formula

My go-to long-haul flight outfit is pretty simple. This is one time when comfort is a priority, but that doesn’t mean you have to look frumpy. You can leave the pajama pants packed away and still survive a long flight in economy wearing comfortable clothes.

Think of this formula as building blocks. How you choose to swap out blocks can be made based on your needs and favorite peices.

• Comfortable Pants
• Shirt with Cardigan or Hoodie
• Blanket Scarf or Travel Blanket
• Compression Socks
• Slip-On Shoes

My current favorite go-to long flight outfit is Eddie Bauer Departure Joggers, a white 32 Degrees bra tank, with a Aviator Nation hoodie or black Athleta cardigan. But my Athleta Brooklyn Mid Rise Wide Leg Pants are quickly becoming my new favorite travel pants for shorter flights even though they’re wide-leg which I typically avoid for long flights.

Best Pants to Wear on a Long Haul Flight

Pants are the most important decision you’ll make for a long haul flight outfit. You need something that feels good sitting for 8, 12, or 14+ hours, moves with you when you get up to stretch, and ideally can do double duty on your trip. Here’s what to look for and what I personally wear.

What to Look for in Long Flight Pants

• Soft, stretchy, or quick-drying fabric — avoid stiff denim
• Elastic or soft waistband — a tight waistband after hours of sitting is miserable
• Fitted or tapered leg — wide legs drag on airplane bathroom floors (ick!)
• Dark colors — practical for long travel days
• Wrinkle-resistant and quick dry fabric if you plan to wear them again on arrival

A quick note on jeans: I will never wear jeans on a long haul flight. They’re restrictive, slow to dry if you have a spill, and the hardware (buttons, rivets) can be uncomfortable for hours. If jeans are non-negotiable for you, choose a relaxed fit with minimal metal hardware and make sure they’re genuinely comfortable when sitting for extended periods.

I’ll also say that lately I’ve been wearing a pair of wide leg pants for my airplane outfit, especially when it’s a shorter flight. But, when I go to the bathroom, I have to pull/fold up the bottom of my pants legs so they don’t hang and touch the bathroom floors when I use the restroom.

Leggings for Long Flights

I love to wear solid black leggings for long flights. I can bend and move in them easily and many come with side pockets for storing my phone. They can be paired with some cute tops and/or cardigans and look more stylish than sweatpants while still staying comfortable. My absolute favorite pair of leggings for travel are these:

• Aerie Pocket Leggings — my go to leggings! A great everyday option which my daughter got me hooked on. They have a wide waistband, and we haven’t had issues with see-through (although we only have them in black)
• Lululemon Align — buttery soft, comes in a pocket version, higher waistband
• Vuori AllTheFeels™ Leggings — extremely soft and flexible, though minimal pocket
• Spanx Booth Boost Side Pocket Leggings — if you want compression and lift on your travel day, they’re 7/8 length so you get a little airflow at the ankle if you get warm
• Girlfriend Collective — size-inclusive, sustainable option and they’re squat-proof!
• Unbound Merino transit sweatpants — for thermoregulating, odor-resistant travel in merino wool

Travel Joggers and Pants

If leggings aren’t your thing, a good pair of travel pants or joggers is the next best option. Look for soft, quick-drying fabrics with elastic or soft waistbands. My top picks:

• Eddie Bauer Departure Joggers — my current favorite, lightweight, easy to rinse and re-wear
• Athleta Brooklyn Jogger — similar fit with a gathered leg cuff, one of the most loved travel pants by women travelers
• Spanx AirEssentials Straight Leg Pants — scuba fabric, very soft and warm and a bit thicker feel, big issue is no pockets though
• Athleta Venice High Rise Jogger — have more structure than the Spanx but still super comfy with great pockets. Perfect if you’re going straight from the plane into your day
• ODODOS joggers (Amazon) — affordable scuba fabric joggers dupe with pockets that feel a bit like yoga pants
• Columbia pants — great if you want a versatile pant that works on city days and light hikes too
• prAna Kanab Pants — more structured, soft hiking-pant with great stretch and pockets
• Unbound Merino travel pants — wool pants, so they’re odor-resistant, can be worn with multiple outfits for lighter packing

Wide Leg Pants

I’ve already mentioned above that I don’t think wide leg pants are great for long flights due to them dragging on the floor. However, I have been known to wear them myself because they look so nice, especially on long legs. My favorite wide leg pants for travel are:

• Spanx AirEssentials Wide Leg — one of the most popular travel pants in the same dreamy soft fabric as the tapered version, just wide leg and loose

Best Tops for Long Haul Flights

Your base layer top matters more than most people think. You want something soft against your skin for a long period of time, and ideally something that doesn’t show every wrinkle or spill.

• Soft t-shirts — Banana Republic Timeless V-neck T-shirt is a current favorite for comfort and colors, also prAna and Target basics
• Graphic tees — a fun option, especially paired with a cardigan and leggings; Old Navy and Target have great options
• Built-in bra tanks — game-changer for comfort on long flights; Duluth Trading Built-In Bra Tank and SheBird both make great versions
• Merino wool tops — popular with frequent flyers becuase their odor-resistance and thermoregulating properties; SmartWool Active Ultralite and Unbound Merino are well-regarded options (note: merino texture doesn’t work for everyone — check the return policy if you’re sensitive to fabric textures)

One tip: white tops show stains and spills very visibly. If you’re traveling with kids or you’re a spill magnet, go with a darker color or a print. Or pack a backup or stain wipes in your carry-on bag.

Layering Is Non-Negotiable on Long Flights

Airplane cabin temperatures are unpredictable. You might board sweating and land frozen, or the opposite. A light jacket, cardigan, or hoodie isn’t optional on a long haul flight — it’s part of the formula. Breathable fabrics that trap warmth without being bulky are ideal here.

Cardigan or Hoodie

• Athleta Pranayama Wrap — long cardigan with pockets, good idea for longer flights that can pack away easily; this Amazon one is good too
• Aviator Nation Striped Hoodie — a splurge, but incredibly soft and cozy for overnight flights
• Spanx AirEssentials Half Zip – one of the most viral airplane travel pieces, its soft and cute and easy to pull on and off

Blanket Scarf or Travel Wrap

A blanket scarf is one of the smartest things you can bring on a long haul flight and can be used instead of a cardigan or hoodie. It works as an extra layer when you’re cold, a light blanket when you’re trying to sleep, and it makes your comfortable airport outfits look more put together. My absolute favorite is the zestt Dreamsoft Travel Scarf. Some travel scarves even have hidden pockets for your passport.

If you prefer a dedicated travel blanket, the Gravel travel blanket is soft and perfect for air travel with it’s storage pockets and neck snap. On longer international flights, airlines typically provide a blanket at your seat, but I’m never entirely sure how clean those are. Having your own is always a good call.

Best Shoes to Wear on a Long Flight

Shoe choice gets overlooked but it genuinely affects your comfort, especially on very long flights where feet tend to swell. Here’s what I always recommend.

Go for Slip-On Shoes

Slip-on shoes are the right call for long haul flights for two reasons: airport security is faster, and if your feet swell during the flight (very common), a slip-on accommodates that far better than a lace-up. My picks:

• Dr. Scholl’s slip-ons — comfortable shoes and affordable, run large so size down
• Vionic Pismo Sneakers — my current favorite slip-on (more like a pull-on) for travel days
• Vionic Uptown Loafer – if you’re looking for a nicer shoe perhaps for a business trip or to wear with other outfits
• Packable slippers — worth packing if you’re going carry-on only and wearing your bulkier shoes for the flight; you can slip these on at your seat and they work well in hotels, too

Shoes to Avoid

• Sandals and flip flops — not enough coverage or support for long flights; also think about airplane floors
• Tall boots — hard to get on and off and can feel constricting if feet or legs swell
• High heels — not the best for comfort and not good if there’s an emergency

One important note: keep your shoes on when you use the airplane bathroom, regardless of how comfortable your socks feel. The floor situation in airplane lavatories doesn’t bear thinking about.

Compression Socks: Why You Should Wear Them

Compression socks help prevent blood clots and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) by improving blood flow in your lower legs during long periods of sitting. On a long haul flight, especially an international overnight, they’re worth wearing even if you’re young and healthy. I have a fellow travel writer friend who got a DVT from flying and it really brought the issue to my attention.

• Bombas and Comrad — the most popular and highly rated options in the travel community; these are 15-20 mmHg compression which is the most useful but can be harder to pull on
• Dr. Scholl’s compression socks — a less restrictive option if you find the higher compression uncomfortable
• Cozy socks layered on top — if you run cold or have poor circulation, pack a pair of warm socks in your carry-on to wear over your compression socks through the flight

What to Wear on an Overnight or International Long Haul Flight

Overnight flights and ultra-long international routes need you to prioritize a few parts of your travel outfits formula. If you’re trying to sleep and land feeling somewhat human, prioritize these:

• Layers — I’ve been on flights where the cabin temps drop noticeably on overnight flights and you need your blanket scarf or travel blanket, and others have been extremely warm and I was glad I had a short sleeve tee under my zip up layer.
• Your softest, most forgiving pants — joggers or soft leggings over anything structured, avoid zippers and buttons
• An eye mask — one of the essentials for sleeping on a long flight, a good eye mask makes a real difference
• Slip-on shoes you can easily remove once seated — your feet will thank you on a 12+ hour flight
• Merino wool base layer if you own one — thermoregulating and odor-resistant if you’re landing and going straight into your trip
• Consider jet lag when you dress — if you’re trying to sleep on the flight to adjust to a new timezone, your outfit should be one you can sleep in
• Moisturizers — while not really part of a travel uniform, airplane air is very dry, so consider packing face and hand moisturizer, under eye masks (if you like), as well as lip balm. And remember a water bottle so you’ll drink water on your flight at your seat!

Best Fabrics for Long Haul Flight Outfits

The fabric your clothes are made from matters as much as the cut. Here’s a quick guide to what works and what doesn’t on long flights:

• Merino wool — thermoregulating, naturally odor-resistant, great for overnight flights and multi-day wear; can feel scratchy for some people so try before committing
• Breathable synthetic blends (like scuba or ponte fabric) — soft, wrinkle-resistant, and forgiving; what most travel-specific brands use
• Cotton — comfortable but absorbs moisture and can feel clammy; fine for shorter flights or as a base layer
• Bamboo — soft and breathable, increasingly popular in travel clothing
• Avoid: stiff denim, anything with a rigid waistband, non-stretch fabrics, silk (pretty but cold and slippery)

The announcement for Universal’s Epic Universe was originally announced in August of 2019 and we now know the opening date is May 22, 2025.  

Today I’m covering everything we know about the Epic Universe Park including details of the lands featured throughout the park, dining and lodging options, and more. Theme park enthusiasts get excited because this is going to be EPIC!

Where is Epic Universe going to be located?

Unlike the other Universal Parks that can be easily accessed from one another, Epic Universe is actually going to be slightly further out and will require a separate drive to attend. The location is on Epic Boulevard, just south of Sand Lake Road and east of Universal Boulevard.

A good landmark for reference is the Orange County Convention Center. It is approximately 10-15 minutes from the current Universal Parks, depending on traffic. The new park is between Universal Orlando Resort and SeaWorld Orlando.

The nice bonus is that Universal will be providing complimentary transportation between all of their parks as well as Universal Hotels.

How Big is the Epic Universe Park?

Universal has revealed that the Epic Universe Resort area will be a whopping 750 acres! That number does include the theme park, hotels, and other amenities. Simply said, the Epic Universe theme park will be 110 acres in size. To compare, Universal Studios Florida covers about 108 acres, Islands of Adventure is approximately 110 acres, and Magic Kingdom at WDW is about 107 acres in size.

Can you park hop to Epic Universe?

No. At this time, you are not able to purchase a “Park-to-Park” ticket and have the opportunity to visit the current Universal Orlando Parks as well as Epic Universe with one ticket all in one day.

There are ticket options where you can purchase a multi-day ticket that will allow you to visit Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, and Volcano Bay parks with a separate day to visit Epic Universe (3 parks and 4 parks tickets). It is unclear if this will always be this way or if eventually you will be able to visit all parks in one day.

Lodging at Epic Universe

Universal has announced that there will be three total hotels near the Epic Universe Park. The Universal Stella Nova Resort and the Universal Terra Luna Resort will be Prime Value Hotels (moderate level) and will be sister hotels. Stella Nova Resort is currently open and accepting reservations, Terra Luna is expected to follow with an opening date of March 25, 2025.

The final Epic Universe hotel that will be available is the Universal Helios Grand Hotel, which will actually be located INSIDE Epic Universe and will be a part of the Universal Signature Hotel Collection. Helios Grand Hotel will be opening with the grand opening of Epic Universe on May 22, 2025!

Epic Universe Lands

Epic Universe has revealed that there will be five featured lands throughout the park featuring some of the most famous Universal franchises that we all know and love. Each of these lands will feature unique attractions, rides, and experiences that immerse guests in these storylines. Universal has stated that Epic Universe will offer more than 50 unique experiences across the Epic Universe Park. These lands include:

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic

A third addition to the Wizarding World lands, joining Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure and Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Orlando, the Ministry of Magic land will showcase Magic from the 1920’s in Paris up to the 1990’s in the British Ministry.

Visitors can visit Place Cachée, a hidden, bustling shopping district in 1920s wizarding Paris, inspired by the Fantastic Beasts film series. From there, guests can travel via the Métro-Floo to the British Ministry of Magic set in the 1990s, as depicted in the original Harry Potter series

The land is set to showcase even more of the Wizarding World including a variety of dining options, shops, interactive magic stops, and a brand-new attraction, Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry. This attraction is described as a lift style attraction in which riders will help Harry, Ron, and Hermione defeat Dolores Umbridge as she attempts to escape her trial at the Ministry.

As for dining experiences, Café L’air De La Sirène is a Parisian-inspired café serving French sandwiches, daily specials, and delectable desserts, with both indoor and outdoor seating options. Another notable spot is Le Gobelet Noir, a haven for those intrigued by the darker aspects of magic, offering a menu featuring soups, salads, hearty entrées, and indulgent desserts.

Super Nintendo World

The Nintendo franchise is popular among so many including those of all ages. Universal Studios Hollywood and Japan already feature their own versions of Super Nintendo World but Epic Universe will be the reveal of Orlando’s very own version of the land.

During your visit at Super Nintendo World, you will get to enjoy incredible set pieces straight from the Mario games we all know and love. There will be an incredible THREE new attractions throughout Super Nintendo World including Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, Mine-Cart Madness with Donkey Kong, and Yoshi’s Adventure.

In addition to these awesome attractions, you will have the chance to meet your favorite characters including Mario and Luigi themselves and enjoy delicious treats at the Toadstool Café.

How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk

In conjunction with some of the other popular DreamWorks movie franchises featured at Universal Studios Florida such as Shrek, Trolls, and Kung Fu Panda… the Epic Universe Park will have a complete land featuring another fan favorite, How to Train Your Dragon.

The How to Train Your Dragon land has something for everyone! The land will feature the Viking Training Camp, a play land for kids to climb, slide, and play. In addition to this fun play land, there will also be another three brand new attractions and a stage show for guests to love.

Hiccup’s Wing Gliders is a roller coaster that takes you soaring of the Isle of Berk, Dragon Racer’s Alley will give you the chance to become a champion dragon-racer as you swoop and soar on a dragon riding trainer, and finally enjoy a fun boat ride battle on Fyre Drill. The Untrainable Dragon is a live show that gives guests the opportunity to join Hiccup, Gobber and Astrid as they attempt to train The Untrainable Dragon.

Dine like a Viking at Mead Hall where you will find a number of dishes featuring a variety of meats, fish, and more. This is a quick service dining option that will offer a number of meal options as well as beverages (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options) including a variety of meads, ciders, and ales.

Dark Universe

Universal Studios has created some of the most iconic monsters and Halloween icons including Frankenstein and Dracula. The Dark Universe land is set to showcase these iconic characters and will give visitors the opportunity to take a glimpse into what it takes to create these monsters.

This land will feature two thrilling attractions, a few dining options, and a monster makeup experience. The attractions featured in the Dark Universe include a motion simulation ride known as Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment in which Dr. Victoria Frankenstein puts you right in the middle of an angry revolt being led by monsters including Frankenstein.

The other ride that you will have the chance to embark on includes the Curse of Werewolf, a thrill ride that will have you racing through the deep woods as you attempt to escape a pack of angered Werewolves.

At Universal Studios Florida you can see the Horror Make-Up Show which takes you behind the scenes of what it takes to create the looks of these monsters but in the Dark Universe you can visit the Darkmoor Monster Makeup Experience where YOU can be transformed into one of those thrilling monsters.

If you love vampires, you won’t want to miss the chance to dine at Das Stakehaus where you can enjoy delicious meals while taking in the Vampire-inspired décor around you. Looking for something a bit more casual? Grab some quick eats at The Burning Blade Tavern.

Celestial Park

The final land within Epic Universe is Celestial Park. This is the first land that you will encounter upon entry into the park and here you will get a cross between Universal’s City Walk with the addition of fun rides and attractions to enjoy as well. Celestial Park will feature a number of dining, shopping, and entertainment options. In addition to these there are also two attractions to kick start your visit.

Stardust Racers, is the most anticipate coaster coming to Universal’s Epic Universe! This high-speed dueling launch coaster isn’t just about speed—it’s a cosmic race through the stars, where two separate tracks twist, dive, and weave around each other in an intense competition.

The ride’s signature “Celestial Spin” maneuver sends riders into an inverted crisscross, making it feel like you’re defying gravity itself. And at night? The coaster trains light up like shooting stars streaking across the sky, creating an out-of-this-world spectacle. With record-breaking length and adrenaline-pumping airtime, Stardust Racers promises to be one of the most breathtaking, high-energy attractions at Epic Universe. If you love speed, thrills, and a little friendly competition, this ride is going to be an absolute must-experience!

Looking for something a little more laid back? Take a ride on the Constellation Carousel. This attraction is a classic Carousel style attraction that takes you through the Constellation on a number of fantasy figures such as dragons, peacocks, horses, and more!

Dining options within Celestial Park include a fine dining experience at Atlantic featuring fine seafood and steak options and an Asian Culinary experience at The Blue Dragon.

It is safe to say that the Epic Universe Park opening is going to be BIG! Universal has gotten a reputation of being a park that is a “quick trip”, with many guests only visiting a couple of days in comparison to its competitor, Walt Disney World. The goal with the launch of Epic Universe is to expand the offerings at Universal Studios Orlando to allow guests the opportunity for a longer vacation within their parks.

Which land are you most excited for? I can’t wait for the opportunity to see and visit Epic Universe when it opens May 22, 2025. Both of my girls are huge Universal Parks fans and they grew up loving How to Train Your Dragon and Harry Potter, so this park is a perfect fit.

We arrived on a red-eye flight and went straight to the Blue Lagoon to soak away our travel fatigue. The next day, we explored Iceland’s stunning landscapes on a Golden Circle tour, and on our final day, we unwound at the Sky Lagoon, experienced FlyOver Iceland, and did some souvenir shopping along Laugavegur, the city’s best shopping street.

If you’re visiting Reykjavik for a few days, this guide will help you plan an amazing trip without feeling rushed. Whether you’re traveling solo, with a friend, or taking a mother-daughter trip like we did, you’ll love this itinerary.

Day 1: Arrival & Relaxation at the Blue Lagoon

Morning: Arriving in Iceland & Heading to the Blue Lagoon

After an overnight flight, we landed in Reykjavik early in the morning, running on excitement (and maybe a little exhaustion). Instead of heading straight to the hotel, we made a beeline for the Blue Lagoon, which is conveniently located closer to the airport than Reykjavik. If you’re arriving on a red-eye, this is hands-down the best way to start your trip.

We chose to pay for a taxi from the airport as the Blue Lagoon shuttle timing wasn’t great for our flight and I didn’t want to feel rushed or worried if our flight was delayed. The taxi cost us $77 USD and it was easy to grab one when we exited the airport.

Arriving at the Blue Lagoon, we were able to drop our luggage off at a special kiosk in the parking lot. They charge about $5 a bag. Keep in mind that you do get access to a locker in the Blue Lagoon so you can bring your backpacks or purse with you.

If you’re planning to pop into the Blue Lagoon after your flight, be sure to pack a quick grab packing cube or tote that has your swimsuit and any body & personal care products (like lotion) you might want after the lagoon. Don’t forget a waterproof phone lanyard for taking photos while in the lagoon! (p.s. I’ve been thinking of getting this popular iridescent one for my next cruise)

Floating in the warm, mineral-rich water felt incredible after hours on a plane. The steam, the silica mud masks, and the peaceful surroundings made it the perfect spot to shake off jet lag and get welcomed to Iceland.

We spent about two hours here, which gave us plenty of time to relax without overdoing it. Our premium package let us try three of the four of the masks at the mask bar (Silica Mud Mask, Algae Mask, Mineral Mask, and Lava Scrub Mask). If you want a longer visit and extra pampering, the Retreat Spa offers a more exclusive experience, but the standard admission is plenty for a short first visit.

Afternoon: Check-In & Exploring Reykjavik

Feeling refreshed, we took the Blue Lagoon shuttle bus into Reykjavik and checked into our hotel. The bus is extremely convenient and costs about $32 per person. These transfer buses are larger and will drop you at a transit center where you’ll transfer to a smaller shuttle bus that takes you to a stop near your hotel. A taxi from the Blue Lagoon to Reykjavik will cost you around $120-$140.

There are plenty of great hotel options in Reykjavik, but staying somewhere central makes it easier to walk to the main sights. This trip we stayed at the Exeter Hotel.

Once we dropped our bags, we grabbed lunch at Le Cock, the restaurant in our hotel lobby. Then we headed out for a casual stroll to get a feel for the city. Hallgrímskirkja, Reykjavik’s iconic church, was our first stop. You can take an elevator to the top for panoramic views, but we skipped it this time. We also checked out the Sun Voyager sculpture and Harpa Concert Hall along the waterfront.

Evening: Dinner & Early Night

For dinner, we wanted something delicious but not too heavy, so we opted for fish and chips—a must-try in Iceland. There are plenty of great spots to choose from, and we had thought to go to the Grandi district to eat at the Grandi Matholl (food hall) or Kaffivagninn which are both well rated. However, we were tired and so went Reykjavik Fish Restaurant next door to our hotel, and it was a great experience.

After dinner we were more than ready for an early night. Between the flight, the Blue Lagoon, and walking around the city, we were exhausted but also very happy.

Day 2: Golden Circle Tour

For our second day in Iceland, we booked a Golden Circle tour with Hidden Iceland, and it was absolutely worth it! At the time, they offered small-group tours, which made the experience feel personal and well-paced. Now, they focus exclusively on private tours, which is a great option if you want a more customized experience. They hire truly excellent tour guides and have the timing down to avoid the biggest crowds.

Morning: Secret Lagoon Hot Springs & Friðheimar Greenhouse Lunch

We kicked off the day with a relaxing soak at the Secret Lagoon, one of Iceland’s oldest natural hot springs. It felt like the perfect way to ease into a busy day of sightseeing. The warm, mineral-rich water was so soothing, and since we arrived early, it wasn’t too crowded. There’s even a small bubbling geyser nearby that erupts every few minutes!

The water here is fairly clear when you’re comparing it to the Blue Lagoon. You can work your way around the pool to find varying temperatures of water since the water directly comes from natural hot springs nearby. Keep in mind you’ll need to rent a towel if you don’t bring your own, and it costs about $6-7 USD.

After that, we headed to Friðheimar, a family-run geothermal tomato greenhouse, for lunch. This place is such a cool experience because you get to dine right inside the greenhouse, surrounded by rows of tomato plants. Their famous tomato soup buffet is extremely popular and it comes with freshly baked bread. I wasn’t in the mood for soup and chose the tomato ravioli which was delicious! They also serve tomato beer, Bloody Marys, and even tomato ice cream!

Midday: Gullfoss Waterfall & Geysir Hot Springs

Next, we visited Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s most breathtaking waterfalls. Standing near the edge and feeling the mist on our faces while watching the water crash down was incredible. The walking paths take you to different viewpoints, so it’s worth spending a little time exploring.

From there, we made our way to the Geysir Hot Springs area, home to Strokkur, the most active geyser in Iceland. It erupts every 4-10 minutes, shooting boiling water high into the air. Even though you know it’s coming, it still surprises you every time! Our guide even gave us a tip for watching the water to start to boil to give you a split second alert to start recording.

Afternoon: Thingvellir National Park

Our final stop was Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most historically significant places in Iceland. It’s where Iceland’s first parliament was established in 930 AD, and it’s also where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. Walking through the dramatic landscape, knowing you were walking along the end of a tectonic plate of the earth felt surreal.

Evening: Dinner at Pósthús Food Hall

After a full day of sightseeing, we wanted something casual but delicious for dinner. Pósthús Food Hall was perfect—it has a variety of food stalls, so everyone can find something they like. We tried the seafood from Fjöruborðið Fish House, while my daughter went for a burger from Hipstur. The atmosphere was relaxed, and it was a great spot to wind down after an adventure-filled day.

I’m so glad we took a Golden Circle tour as it put us in awe of Iceland’s natural beauty. It was the kind of day that left us with incredible memories and an appreciation for the landscapes that make this country so special.

Day 3: FlyOver Iceland, Exploring Reykjavik & Relaxing at Sky Lagoon

For our last full day in Iceland, we wanted to mix in a little adventure, some time to explore the city, and a relaxing finish before heading off on our Windstar Iceland Cruise. We started with an immersive flying experience, spent the afternoon strolling through Reykjavik, and ended the day unwinding at one of the best geothermal lagoons in Iceland.

Morning: FlyOver Iceland

We kicked off the day with FlyOver Iceland, which I did previously and couldn’t wait to share it with my daughter! It’s a 4D virtual flight that takes you soaring over Iceland’s most breathtaking landscapes, from volcanoes and glaciers to waterfalls and fjords. If you’ve been on Disney’s Soarin’ ride, this is very similar. The seats float in front of a movie screen and you’ll feel mist in the air, and the sensation of wind rushing past you. It’s a great way to see parts of Iceland you might not get to visit in person.

Since FlyOver Iceland is located near the Grandi area, we grabbed a quick coffee and pastry at Kaffivagninn, which is considered the oldest restaurant in Iceland, before heading into the city center. There is a cafe at FlyOver Iceland that serves food and drinks as well – and their gift shop has a lot of great souvenirs!

Midday: Exploring Reykjavik & Shopping in Laugavegur

After our morning adventure, we spent the afternoon wandering through Reykjavik. There’s so much to see, and the city is incredibly walkable. We grabbed lunch at one of the many shops that are in the area and I don’t recall the name.

We strolled down Laugavegur, Reykjavik’s main shopping street. It’s the perfect place to pick up souvenirs, and we found some great shops selling Icelandic wool sweaters (lopapeysa), lava jewelry, and locally made skincare products. If you’re looking for unique gifts, Handknitting Association of Iceland and Iceland Memories are fun places to browse.

Evening: Sky Lagoon & Dinner at Smakk Bar

To wrap up our trip, we spent the evening at Sky Lagoon, one hot spring that is closest to Reykjavik. This lagoon has a completely different feel from the Blue Lagoon. It feels a little more luxurious, especially if you get the Sky Pass that gives you private changing rooms. The water is crystal clear and warm and the infinity overlook is a great spot to relax.

The highlight here is the seven-step Skjól Ritual, where you move from the warm infinity pool to an ice bath, sauna, mist shower, body scrub, steam room, and shower. It’s part of Icelandic tradition and is incredibly refreshing and left us feeling healthy.

After soaking up the views (literally), we had dinner at Smakk Bar, the lagoon’s on-site restaurant. The menu focuses on Icelandic small plates, so we got to try a variety of local flavors. Everything was fresh and beautifully presented, making for a relaxed and delicious final meal.

Final Thoughts on Reykjavik & Our 3-Day Itinerary

Looking back, these three days were the perfect way to experience Reykjavik’s best sights, natural wonders, and local culture. We packed in a lot, but never felt rushed, and ending with a peaceful evening at Sky Lagoon was the perfect sendoff for our one-week Iceland cruise.

Day Bag

I use this Travelon Sling bag myself and it’s my favorite day bag for touring. It’s small but fits a lot including a small water bottle pocket. You can even cram a small jacket or umbrella in it. Plus it has locking zippers – which isn’t needed in Iceland really but is in other big cities! If you’re worried about rain, consider spraying your bag with Scotchguard.

Rain Jacket & Layers

Even during the summer it rained on us during our tours. A good rain jacket and warm layers that you can remove as needed depending on the season you’re visiting are must-haves for Iceland.

Waterproof Shoes

If you’re planning to tour the Golden Circle, you’ll want a pair of waterproof shoes with good grip as there is rain spray from the waterfalls. Plus, it’s not uncommon for rain to come even in the summer so waterproof shoes will make your touring more comfortable. I loved wearing my Patch boots on my trip.
