“When I got home that night as my wife served dinner, I held her hand and said, I’ve got something to tell you. She sat down and ate quietly. Again I observed the hurt in her eyes.

Suddenly I didn’t know how to open my mouth. But I had to let her know what I was thinking. I want a divorce. I raised the topic calmly. She didn’t seem to be annoyed by my words, instead she asked me softly, why?

I avoided her question. This made her angry. She threw away the chopsticks and shouted at me, you are not a man! That night, we didn’t talk to each other. She was weeping. I knew she wanted to find out what had happened to our marriage. But I could hardly give her a satisfactory answer; she had lost my heart to Jane. I didn’t love her anymore. I just pitied her!

With a deep sense of guilt, I drafted a divorce agreement which stated that she could own our house, our car, and 30% stake of my company. She glanced at it and then tore it into pieces. The woman who had spent ten years of her life with me had become a stranger. I felt sorry for her wasted time, resources and energy but I could not take back what I had said for I loved Jane so dearly. Finally she cried loudly in front of me, which was what I had expected to see. To me her cry was actually a kind of release. The idea of divorce which had obsessed me for several weeks seemed to be firmer and clearer now.

The next day, I came back home very late and found her writing something at the table. I didn’t have supper but went straight to sleep and fell asleep very fast because I was tired after an eventful day with Jane. When I woke up, she was still there at the table writing. I just did not care so I turned over and was asleep again.

In the morning she presented her divorce conditions: she didn’t want anything from me, but needed a month’s notice before the divorce. She requested that in that one month we both struggle to live as normal a life as possible. Her reasons were simple: our son had his exams in a month’s time and she didn’t want to disrupt him with our broken marriage.

This was agreeable to me. But she had something more, she asked me to recall how I had carried her into out bridal room on our wedding day. She requested that every day for the month’s duration I carry her out of our bedroom to the front door ever morning. I thought she was going crazy. Just to make our last days together bearable I accepted her odd request.

I told Jane about my wife’s divorce conditions. . She laughed loudly and thought it was absurd. No matter what tricks she applies, she has to face the divorce, she said scornfully.

My wife and I hadn’t had any body contact since my divorce intention was explicitly expressed. So when I carried her out on the first day, we both appeared clumsy. Our son clapped behind us, daddy is holding mommy in his arms. His words brought me a sense of pain. From the bedroom to the sitting room, then to the door, I walked over ten meters with her in my arms. She closed her eyes and said softly; don’t tell our son about the divorce. I nodded, feeling somewhat upset. I put her down outside the door. She went to wait for the bus to work. I drove alone to the office.

On the second day, both of us acted much more easily. She leaned on my chest. I could smell the fragrance of her blouse. I realized that I hadn’t looked at this woman carefully for a long time. I realized she was not young any more. There were fine wrinkles on her face, her hair was graying! Our marriage had taken its toll on her. For a minute I wondered what I had done to her.

On the fourth day, when I lifted her up, I felt a sense of intimacy returning. This was the woman who had given ten years of her life to me. On the fifth and sixth day, I realized that our sense of intimacy was growing again. I didn’t tell Jane about this. It became easier to carry her as the month slipped by. Perhaps the everyday workout made me stronger.

She was choosing what to wear one morning. She tried on quite a few dresses but could not find a suitable one. Then she sighed, all my dresses have grown bigger. I suddenly realized that she had grown so thin, that was the reason why I could carry her more easily.

Suddenly it hit me… she had buried so much pain and bitterness in her heart. Subconsciously I reached out and touched her head.

Our son came in at the moment and said, Dad, it’s time to carry mom out. To him, seeing his father carrying his mother out had become an essential part of his life. My wife gestured to our son to come closer and hugged him tightly. I turned my face away because I was afraid I might change my mind at this last minute. I then held her in my arms, walking from the bedroom, through the sitting room, to the hallway. Her hand surrounded my neck softly and naturally. I held her body tightly; it was just like our wedding day.

But her much lighter weight made me sad. On the last day, when I held her in my arms I could hardly move a step. Our son had gone to school. I held her tightly and said, I hadn’t noticed that our life lacked intimacy. I drove to office…. jumped out of the car swiftly without locking the door. I was afraid any delay would make me change my mind…I walked upstairs. Jane opened the door and I said to her, Sorry, Jane, I do not want the divorce anymore.

She looked at me, astonished, and then touched my forehead. Do you have a fever? She said. I moved her hand off my head. Sorry, Jane, I said, I won’t divorce. My marriage life was boring probably because she and I didn’t value the details of our lives, not because we didn’t love each other anymore. Now I realize that since I carried her into my home on our wedding day I am supposed to hold her until death do us apart. Jane seemed to suddenly wake up. She gave me a loud slap and then slammed the door and burst into tears. I walked downstairs and drove away. At the floral shop on the way, I ordered a bouquet of flowers for my wife. The salesgirl asked me what to write on the card. I smiled and wrote, I’ll carry you out every morning until death do us apart.

That evening I arrived home, flowers in my hands, a smile on my face, I run up stairs, only to find my wife in the bed -dead. My wife had been fighting CANCER for months and I was so busy with Jane to even notice. She knew that she would die soon and she wanted to save me from the whatever negative reaction from our son, in case we push through with the divorce.— At least, in the eyes of our son—- I’m a loving husband….

The small details of your lives are what really matter in a relationship. It is not the mansion, the car, property, the money in the bank. These create an environment conducive for happiness but cannot give happiness in themselves.

So find time to be your spouse’s friend and do those little things for each other that build intimacy. Do have a real happy marriage!

If you don’t share this, nothing will happen to you.

If you do, you just might save a marriage. Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.

Remember love is the richest of all treasures. Without it there is nothing; and with it there is everything. Love never perishes , even if the bones of a lover are ground fine like powder. Just as the perfume of sandalwood does not leave it, even if it is completely ground up, similarly the basis of love is the soul, and it is indestructible and therefore eternal. Beauty can be destroyed , but not love.

What is a budget?

A budget by definition is a list of all planned incomes and expenses of an entity. The Union Budget refers to the budget of government of India. The role of government of India is to run the nation and ensure the well being of its citizens. Say, you are living in a housing complex and there are 25 apartments. The residents appoint a committee to take care of the complex. The committee is responsible for security, provide and maintain common amenities like elevator, garden, parking, lighting etc. To enjoy these facilities the apartment owners contribute money as maintenance charges to the committee.

In the larger context the so called housing committee is the government we elect. The responsibility of the government is much wider and larger; security of its citizens, infrastructure like roads, railways, power, bridges etc, health care, education and skill development, food security, support for weaker sections etc. To execute this government requires people and resources and for this it needs money.

Where will it get the money? Obviously from its citizens! This 'maintenance charge' is called as tax. In fact the government taxes its citizens directly and indirectly. Direct taxes are taxes paid as a percentage of your income. Income tax, corporate tax, capital gains etc are all examples of direct taxes.

Now over and above this government charges activities based taxes. Like on manufacturing the manufacturer has to pay excise duty, importer of goods need to pay customs duty, service providers - service tax, sellers- VAT etc.

This is how broadly the government gets its money. So every year the government prepares an annual financial statement of income and expense and this is called the Union Budget of India. This is presented on the last day of February month and becomes effective from April of that calendar year. The responsibility of budget lies with the finance minister. In order to become effective it is has to be passed by the parliament.

Is the budget just a financial statement only projecting income and expenses? No, it is in fact also a statement of fiscal (financial) policy. The government can use this as a measure to bring a change in the behavioral pattern.

Let's rewind a bit. Climbing stairs is good for health. To inculcate this, the committee in the housing society can give a discount in maintenance charges to the residents who are willing to not use elevators for 2 floors. The incentive may motivate the residents to act in a particular fashion.

That is exactly what the finance minister tries to do through budget policy measures. Policy measures can influence spending, manufacturing, investments etc.

Union Budget 2013

The central government is estimating to spend Rs 16, 65,297 crores next year for the above said activities. Majority of the expenses will be earned through taxes and a small portion through other sources. Whatever is falling short is called as deficit. How will this be managed? The government will borrow money from people/ institutions.

How the government plans to spend in 2013-14

The government plans its spending under two broad categories- Plan Expenditure and Non Plan Expenditure. Out of the 16 lakh odd crores, 5.5 lakh crores is proposed to be allocated to Plan Expenditure and 11 lakh crores for Non Plan Expenditure.

Plan expenditure is meant for spending on different objectives of the 5-year economic plan of the central government. All the spending in terms of subsidy schemes and assistance, for generating employment, improving infrastructure, health facilities, education and so on, is Plan Expenditure. This figure is estimated after discussions with Planning Commission and ministries concerned.

What the government spends on routine activities is Non Plan Expenditure. This can be for salaries of government employees, grants to state governments, administrative expenses, defence spending, foreign grants, etc.

In the table below we have highlighted how the government has planned its expenditure for the next financial year for your awareness.

Tax changes

This year the Finance Minister has estimated to spend more in social sectors of education, health care, skill development etc. This is necessary for the welfare of society and for the overall growth of the economy.

Part of these expenditures will be sponsored through tax collection. Although he has not raised income tax slabs he has taken measures to increase tax collections as well.

Direct taxes

Although income tax slabs have not been altered surcharge has been proposed for certain categories of tax payers.

Despite the number of HNIs having income above Rs 1 crore is much higher there are only 48,200 people in the country who have declared their income to be exceeding that. Surcharges will be levied for one year.

But for those earning between Rs 2 lakhs and Rs 5 lakhs a tiny relief will be given. Rs 2000 will be automatically credit as income tax for those in this bracket.

TDS is proposed to be applied on property sale of value over Rs 50 lakhs.

STT applicable on sale or purchase of shares and mutual fund units has been lowered.

First time home buyers, who borrow less than Rs 25 lakhs, have some good news. They will get an additional Rs 1 lakh deduction on interest payment besides the present Rs 1.5 lakhs deduction.

Customs duty and excise duty levied on various items have been revised upwards.

Rao Gopal Rao was born on January 14th 1937 in Ganganaparu near Kakinada. He started his career as a stage artist. He started his own association called Associated Amateur Drama Company and did many plays under the banner. S.V.Rangarao who watched his plays, recommended him to Gutta Ramineedu who is making ‘Bhakta Potana' (1966). He also worked as an assistant director for the this film. He also worked as n assistant director for the films like Bangaru Sankellu and Mooga Prema.

He acted as a main villan in the film Jagat Kiladilu (1969). With the film Mutyala Muggu directed by Bapu, he got the instant reorganization. He acted in films directed by Bapu Bhakta Kannappa (1976), Gorantadiipam (1978), Manavuri Pandavulu (1978), Kaliyuga Ravanasurudu (1980), Tyagayya (1981), Jaakii (1985), Bullet (1985) etc.

He is awarded with 'Kala Prapoorna' in 1990 by Andhra University and also cultural organizations gave him the title Natavirat. He is felicitated with the Nagayya Award in 1987. He was appointed as Rajyasabha member by Nandamuri Taraka Ramarao. As a producer he made the films like Station Master, Lorry Driver, Bhargvaramudu, Vintadongalu etc.He passed away onf August 13, 1994.The film Prema & co was released after his death.

“Veturi is the Gulzar of Telugu Cinema.” The previous comment was from my friend who had just listened to the songs of K. Viswanath’s ‘Saagara Sangamam’. The comment had thrown me into opprobrium, I completely objected to his comparison because Veturi is not Gulzar… Veturi is Veturi. Gulzar fits into a different zone of lyricists and comparing Veturi to Gulzar is a sin…

In 1989 Mani Ratnam directed his only Telugu film “Geethanjali” which is one of the best love stories I have ever seen, Mani Ratnam who is not well versed in Telugu had to translate the lyrics written by Veturi Sundararama Murthy in Tamil and from that day Veturi has been Mani Ratnam’s favorite lyricist. Apart from the numerous awards that ‘Geethanjali’ received it is a path breaking film for Telugu Cinema (at least for me…). Probably this is the only Indian film where we find a 2 minute smooch, how did this song pass the censor board without a cut?…The song is beautifully directed and apart from that it’s the lyrics of veturi which did the magic.

The above lines are a perfect example for his classical insight; he mixes the sacred mantra ‘Aum Namah Shivaya’ with the romantic feelings ‘nayana shruthulaku’ which means ‘Speech of the eyes, ‘hrudaya layalaku’ which means ‘Heart Beats’, ‘adhara jathulaku’ which means ‘ Pair of Lips’ and ‘madhura smruthulaku’ which means ‘beautiful thoughts’

After K.Vishwanath probably its Sekhar Kammula who has shown the best of Veturi.One of his last songs in the film ‘Leader’ “Yae Sakuni adani judam brathukemo chadarangam, edi adani ravnakashtam, chitilone simantam” I was never interested in Telugu Literature, because I have seen it as an extra subject in my school and always made fun of the language but everything changed when I started to listen to the songs of Veturi, I started my own small research on telugu literature and started reading books on telugu literature. In one sentence Veturi Sundararama Murthy made me realize that “Desha bhashalandu telugu lessa”.May his soul rest in peace.

Chicken Pox – Causes, Symptoms, Treatment and Prevention

Chicken Pox is a highly contagious disease of mainly children aged about 5-10 years caused by ‘Varicella Zoster virus’ (VZV).Some times the disease is also seen in adults who are not having immunity. In children the disease is usually mild. But in adults the disease appears in a virulent form with vesicles spreading almost all parts of the body. Infection spreads through direct contact from person to person. It can also spread through inhalation of the virus droplets coming out with cough and sneezing by the patient. The Incubation period is about 12- 14 days. The disease occurs throughout the year bust most commonly seen from January to May.
Symptoms and course of the disease:

Soon after the incubation period is over the disease starts with fever lasting for 3-4 days with a temperature ranging from 1000F- 1040F depending on the severity.

Sore throat, cough and general malaise, vomiting and headache are also present.

Within 3-4 days papules or vesicles appear on the body. The vesicles appear on the back, abdomen, chest, hands, feet and face. The vesicles are filled with fluid highly infectious and concentrated with virus. The patient feels discomfort with itching and burning sensation. The vesicles last for 3-4 days and starts regressing with scabbing. Care should be taken if the vesicles appear near the eyes to prevent eye infection. Secondary infections sometimes cause complications. Occasionally the vesicles may appear in the mouth and on the genital parts. Sometimes the disease may lead into complications like pneumonia, skin infections and neurological disorders like encephalitis are seen. The disease runs for about 10-14 days from the onset to complete recovery. Once infected the patient develops a life long immunity.

Treatment and general precautions:

Since Chicken Pox is highly contagious especially to children. Therefore avoid contact by other persons in the house. Keep the infected patient in isolation and keep the surrounding areas clean.

During the early stage controlling of fever is essential. Antipyretics like acetaminophen can be given. In addition cold compresses on the fore head, palms and feet can be given. When the temperature is high of more than 1040F take medical advice. High temperatures especially in children should be taken care to prevent further complications. Aspirin and ibuprofen are not advisable and should not be given.

Secondary bacterial infections should be controlled with proper antibiotics under medical advice.

Topical dressings like cold baths containing baking soda reduce the itching sensation and soothe the patient.

Gargling with salt water helps when there are vesicles in the mouth.

Scratching should be avoided. Cut the finger nails to prevent damage to the vesicles and skin infections.

When the vesicles develop near the eyes instill antibiotic eye drops to prevent infection of the eyes.

Anti viral drugs can be given in immunosuppressant patients from the beginning till the vesicles disappear.

Home remedies for Chicken Pox:

•To prevent formation of scars smear pure honey on the scabs.

•After the scab formation and recovery of the patient apply a paste made by Neem leaves, turmeric and vegetable oil. This cures the scabs quickly and prevents spread of the virus.

•Carrot and coriander soup can be given to increase the resistance of the body.

•Herbal teas made with Tulsi leaves, Cinnamon (Dalchini), honey and lemon can be given.

Prevention of Chicken Pox:

Since Chicken Pox is highly contagious necessary measures should be taken to prevent the spread of the disease. Keep the patient in isolation and avoid contact with other children in the house. Keep the surroundings clean and dispose off all the materials used by the patient and replace the bed sheets and other apparel periodically and wash them.

Chicken Pox although is not a serious disease but due to occasional complications vaccination is advised for children between 12-18 months. Older children who do not possess immunity can also be vaccinated. Vaccine provides immunity towards a severe attack of chickenpox and protects up to 85% against the disease. In spite there is an advantage the vaccine has not become popular due to the fact that the disease is milder in children and an actual attack gives a life long immunity when compared to the vaccine. Moreover the cost of the vaccine is also high. Therefore the World Health Organization has not recommended in the vaccination programme of developing countries.
