You can call that brainwashing or you can call that National Education. Every country will have it's share of it. Patriotism needs to be cultivated / brain washed into the citizen. A sense of patriotism makes a citizen have a stake in the country, which will result in him working harder and happier.

Of cos, patriotism cultivation can be overdone too, and we want to avoid that as well. Examples are Germany under Hitler or Japan during WWII.

Hi Yew Mun, well I left a long drawn out comment and then realized that I had to fill out a google account. Oh well. I really like your writings and postings. They are very good and interesting to read. I thought the one about race was interesting to read. Of course, I am white. My daughter, Heather is white. However, Heather is 1/4 Chinese (Cantonese from Hong Kong)and 1/2 American Indian. I want to trace Heather's roots back to Hong Kong someday because that is where her Grandfather is from. I have good friends that are black and of course, we have a black President now (Barack Obama) which I think is very good. I voted for him. There is still racism in our country unfortunately. ie. My 84 year old father is racist against blacks which is the way he was raised and he never was able to get "with the times". I think that racism is truly ignorance. Everyone should be treated equally no matter what race you are. I was married to a "Chinaman" (well he was 1/2 Chinese and 1/2 American Indian) but he always called himself a Chinaman.
