    In the world of business, a mission statement describes the purpose of an organization. This statement is meant to reflect the essence of the organization and its goals. As he wrote the verses in today's first reading, the prophet probably had no idea that he was presenting something of a mission statement for Jesus. But there really is no more concise picture of what he came to do for us.
     How many times did Jesus bring glad tidings to the lowly? Think of the comfort he gave to the women at the well (John 4:4-26), How many times did he heal the brokenhearted? Think of the widow of Nain, whose son was brought back to life (Luke 7:11-16). What of the multitudes he liberated from captivity to sin and sickness -- and not just in the first-century Israel! We have all been touched by Jesus and the good news he proclaims.
     But there's something more here. Jesus' mission statement is ours as well. We are called to bring the "glad tidings" of God's love to the world. We are called to care for the brokenhearted. and to tell people that the "favor of the Lord" is for every one (Isaiah 61:1-2) Remember, Jesus didn't come just to lift us up. He also came to show us how to live.
     We are halfway through Advent, so maybe it's a good time to evaluate your own progress -- just as a business evaluate their strenghts and weaknessess from time to time. How are you doing at fulfilling your mission? Have you been working to bring glad tidings to people? If so then thank the Lord and to tell him that you want to go even further. Imagine the grace and peace that can flow from every act of kindness, every gentle word of encouragement, and every work of service you do. It won't take long before "justice and praise" spring up whereever you to go (Isaiah 61:11).

Nursing Home Christmas Tree
It is time for the Nursing Home Christmas Tree. The tree will be located in the foyer of the church. The tags on the tree will have the residents name of number of the Nursing home they are in and the items they want for Christmas. Please take a tag, purchase and wrap the gift and return to the tree as soon as possible. Please attach the tag to the gift. This will be a project of the 7th grade Religious Education class. The Free Throw contest will be held January 24th at 10 am in the St. Xavier School Gym. Mark your calendars now and start practicing.

SHOWER FOR BABY JESUS
St. Xavier students will once again participate in a shower for Baby Jesus on December 19. Students will offer wrapped baby gifts at Mass. The gifts will be taken to the school cafeteria where they will be opened adn distributed to Birthline later that day. PTO will provide donuts for the shower.

JUST IN TIME
That inexpensive "CHRISTMAS GIFT", that is sure to be a treasure. Our Parish Cookbook will be available after each Mass, starting November 30th, giving you 500 recipes to enjoy from our St. Xavier Parishioners. The cost for the cookbook is $10. The Parish Office, the St. Xavier's School Office, Ladies Circles, I, III, IV and Women With A Mission, will have cookbooks available to sale. Checks for the cookbooks are to be made out to St. Xavier Cookbook. Anyone wanting cookbooks delivered can call 717-9291.

Would you like to remember a loved one during Christmas by providing a poinsettia plant for our traditional Memorial Tree? Sisters and brothers in Christ, the Holy Spirir gathers us together so that we might open our ears to hear the voice of God. We sing joyfully to the Lord, who is the rock of our salvation. Today we are summoned to love our neighbor. In this celebration of the Mass we are nourished by word and sacrament so that we may be strengthened to respond to that commandment to love one another. The Lord Jesus is the source of that love. Let us raise a song of joy to his great name.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, we open our ears now to listen to God's word. Let any hearts dulled by complacency awaken to the power of theat word. Saint Paul reminds us of the great commandment in today's second reading: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Let this place resound with that love as the living word is proclaimed in our midst.

Mighty Big Thanks
The St. Xavier cookbook recipes have been sent out for publications, and should be back by the first part of December for sale! Our parish has risen to our needs and pulled out all their family secret recipes. A total of 447 top notch recipes were submitted. Thank you so much.

BIBLE STUDY
Bible Study will be held for confirmed high school, college students and adults. The focus will be on the Old Testament from Genesis up to Jesus' birth.

CURSILLO

Women's Cursillo #8 is scheduled for Sept. 11-14 in Victoria, KS.
(Ker-see-O) Cursillo is a "short course" or "short experience" in the fundamental teaching of Jesus as lived with other Christians. If you want to be renewed in your Catholic faith, this may be what you ahve been searching for. You must be at least 21 years old and Catholic. For more information contact Janet Hahn, 461-5996.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION
If your child does not attend school at St. Xavier, he/she should attend religious education classes on Wednesday evenings that begin September 10th at 7pm.

Parents and children should come to the church for the first session. Registration for those not previously registered will be after the classes.

Fees: $45 for one child; $60 for two or more.

To receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and First Communion, a child must attend classes in the first and second grades.

Confirmation preparation is also a two year program that requires attendance at Pre-Confirmation and Sacramental classes.

9-11 REMEMBERED

Thursday (9-11) was and is a tragic day for many of us especially Americans. We remember and reflect on the bombings of the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and the field in Pennsylvania. We know life goes on but not as "normal living" but with caution and thanksgiving for all those who responded in so many ways, not just on 9-11 but everyday where others reach out to help others. (Firefighters-EMT-Medical personnel-Police-military and concerned citizens.)
Gathering together as Christians we lift our prayer to our Creator for help in time of NEED. We unite in thanksgiving for those dedicated servants who are there when we need them.
Two Masses will be celebrated on Thursday, a special school Mass at 7:50 am and an evening Mass at 6:60 pm. Please join us inreflection and remembering that through it all God is with us. May He welcome to Eternal Life those who have died and may He strengthen those survivors.

"Christian Unity," An INTERFAITH Religion Special

Christian Unity, An Interfaith Religion Special, will be broadcast Sunday, September 21 on the CBS Television Network. Check your local station for exact time.

    Over the centuries Christians have split into many groups, not always on friendly terms. Christian Unity is an ongoing attempt to bring Roman Catholics, Protestants, Evangelicals, Eastern and Oriental Orthodox into further dialogue and co-operation. This year The Annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity celebrates its 100th anniversary in this country.

    The Graymoor Spiritual Center, in Garrison, N.Y. is a Roman Catholic Community that is home to the Franciscan Friars and Sisters of the Atonement and where Christian unity is encouraged year-round.

    The special will explore Louisville, Ky., a southern Bible-belt community where ecumenical spirit thrives. CHRISTIAN UNITY reveals the wishes of many that the one Christian faith be fully united once again.

Brothers and sisters, today is a special day on the on the Church's calendar, and Solemnity of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The Church holds these men in such high honor that the prayers and readings for their feast day replaces the usual Sunday readings. As we celebrate this Mass, let us seek the intercession of Saint Peter, the rock on whom the church is built, and Saint Paul, the apostle of the nations.

Mighty Big Thank You
We thank all who donated their time, talent and treasure to help the people of St. Michael's in Chapman. Your generosity of $6,710.57, toward those who suffered from the forces of nature is overwhelming. May God bless you all.

We welcome to the Christian Community Mathias Orion Lopez-Schoenhofer and Alyson Elizabeth Simpson, who were baptized last weekend. May the loving God be with them and their families always.

We thank the estate of Kathy Johnson for the generous donation of $76,500 for St. Xavier Parish. The monies will help to continue the work of the Lord in His Vineyard. Please remember St. Xavier Parish in your will. It will work for generations to come. May Kathy and all the faithful departed rest in the loving arms of their Creator.

CENTURY FARM AWARD

Brothers and sisters in Christ, our Lenten journey of repentance has led us to the gates of the holy city of Jerusalem. With the crowds who followed Jesus and acclaimed him as their Messiah we raise our palm branches and join in festive song. We then follow Jesus along the way of teh cross as we share in his passion and death. Let us begin this solemn liturgy with hearts open to the saving work God will accomplish in this holy place as we begin this holiest of weeks.

We extend our sympathy and prayers to the family and friends of Aggie Schuster who passed away last week. May the loving God welcome her to eternal glory.

    St. Xavier 22nd Annual Benefit Auction
St. Xavier School is preparing for its 22nd Annual Benefit Auction to be held on Saturday, April 12, 2008. This is our major annual fundraiser event of the year. We are looking for people to volunteer in various jobs such as security, soliciting, food preparation, setup, cleanup, greeting, finance, etc. If you would be interested in helping out or just seeing what goes on, Or have questions please call the Parish Office at 238-2998.

    Auction tickets wil be available through the Parish Office at a cost of $30 per person. This price includes food, drinks and the opportunity to bid on a variety of items in both a live and silent auction. We discourage attendance by those under 21 because alcohol is served at this event.
    Raffle tickets are available for $5 each or 6 for $25. Raffles will be held for cash drawings that evening for $1000, $500, $200 and $100. You need not be present to win but we hope that you will be able to join in.
    If you or your business can support us with a donation, we accept any new items, antiques or services donations in addition to cash donations. Your name or business will be listed in the auction book. Various cash donation categories are set up for this event to include Major Donors ($1000 and above), Gold Donors ($500-999), Silver Donors ($100-499) and Patron ($99 and under). Any amount, no matter how small or large, will be greatly appreciated.

Sisters and brothers, the Holy Spirit gathers us together on this Fifth Sunday of Lent to stand in wonder and awe at the miracle of the raising of Lazarus. For those preparing for baptism, this miracle signals the promise made to all who put their hope in the Lord. That promise made to each of us who are baptised, keeps our hope alive. We are promised a share in the glory of the Resurrection at the end of time. As this Mass begins, let us be open to the miracles that the Lord does in our lives.

Like Lazarus, May we be AWAKENED from our worldly coma.

Sisters and brothers, today the Church draws us to the Lord Jesus, the wellspring of living water. And today throughout the world the Church celebrates the first scrutiny with those who are preparing for baptism at Easter. A scrutiny is a special rite that uncovers and heals all that is sinfull, and brings out and strenthens all that is good. All of us, whether we are preparing for baptism or have been a baptized Catholic for many years, are in need of healing and reconciliation. Like the Samaritan woman at the well, we thirst for the life-giving waters that only our Lord Jesus can provide.
Today we hear the first of three stories of conversion - the Gospel story of the Samaritan woman at the well. As this Gospel is proclaimed, let us imagine ourselves at that well where the Lord uncovered the women's sinfulness. Let us be aware of our own sins and the Lord's desire to free us from those sins. Let us place our hopes in the wellspring of eternal life -- Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

is a worldwide ecumenical movement of women and men of many faith traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer on the first Friday in March each year. Throughout the day, we collectively pray all over the world, beginning with the first sunrise and ending at the last sunset. Our prayers follow the sun's path around the globe. For 2008, the women of Guyana, developed the theme "God's Wisdom Provides New Understanding" to express the awesomeness of God's work, we are filled with awe at the beauty and diversity, and we begin to understand that we are called to care for all creation.

ST. XAVIER'S ANNUAL ALUMNI BANQUET
The annual Saint Xavier's alumni banquet will be held on May 25th, 2008 at the Geary County Convention Center, Courtyard by Marriott on East Chestnut Street. The Social Hour will begin at 6 pm with the dinner following at 7. The Alumni Mass will be at 5:15 Saturday evening. All family and friends are welcome.
The cost of the evening will be $30.00 per person in advance by May 10th. Tickets at the door will be $35.00 and to attend without the meal will be $10.00. To make reservations a check may be sent to St. Xavier's Alumni, PO BOX 399, Junction City, KS 66441.

The keynote speaker wil be Dr. Kevin Bryant, a 1983 graduate of St. Xavier School. He teaches primarily in the criminal justice program at Benedictine College in Atchison, KS. Graduation from Kansas State University (BS 1988; MA 1990) and received his PHD from the Universiy of Tennessee at Knoxville. In 1998 he began teaching as assistant professor of Criminal Justice of the University of West Florida in Pensacola. He accepted his current position at Benedictine in 2003 where he resides with his family.
Kevin is the son of Gary and Michele Bryant of Junction City.

Brothers and sisters, wrapped in the merciful love of God, we have been summoned by the Holy Spirit to this sacred place. During this holy season God wants us to turn away from sin and be faithful followers of the gospel. As this Mass begins, let us pray that we will share in the brightness of God's glory throughout our days.
In baptism, the Lord blesses us and makes of us a great and holy nation. Too often we forget the promises we made in baptism. Lent is our annual sojourn of rememberance. We spend forty days preparing to renew our baptism promises at Easter. Today's Gospel of the Transfiguration gives us a glimpse - early in the Lenten season - of the reason for our hope. We whose sins are washed clean through baptism are given the promise of eternal glory with our Lord. Let today's word open our hearts to this saving message.

St. Xavier School is preparing for its 22nd Annual Benefit Auction to be held on Saturday, April 12, 2008. This is our major annual fundraiser event of the year. We are looking for people to volunteer in various jobs such as security, soliciting, food preparation, setup, cleanup, greeting, finance, etc. If you would be interested in helping out or just seeing what goes on, please attend the auction meeting on February 11 at 7:00 pm in the rectory meeting room.
    Auction tickets wil be available through the Parish Office at a cost of $30 per person. This price includes food, drinks and the opportunity to bid on a variety of items in both a live and silent auction. We discourage attendance by those under 21 because alcohol is served at this event.
    Raffle tickets are available for $5 each or 6 for $25. Raffles will be held for cash drawings that evening for $1000, $500, $200 and $100. You need not be present to win but we hope that you will be able to join in.
    If you or your business can support us with a donation, we accept any new items, antiques or services donations in addition to cash donations. Your name or business will be listed in the auction book. Various cash donation categories are set up for this event to include Major Donors ($1000 and above), Gold Donors ($500-999), Silver Donors ($100-499) and Patron ($99 and under). Any amount, no matter how small or large, will be greatly appreciated.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, today we are summoned by the Holy Spirit into the desert of Lenten repentance. Like the Lord, we willo be tempted along the way. At this Mass begins, let us ask God to strengthen us to resist the devil's tempations. Let us draw strength from teh promises we made in baptism and put our hope and trust in God alone.
Lent is a journey of repentance marked by the sharing of sacred stories central to our faith. Today we enter the desert with the Lord. In the weeks to come we will climb the mountain of Transfiguration with him. Soon after, we will witness him with the Samaritan woman at the well. Then, as Lent draws toward Easter, we will witness the Lord heal the blind man and stand in wonder as the Lord raises Laarus from the dead. But first, sisters and brothers, we must follow the Lord into the desert of repentance, which our scriptures invite us to do now.

RICE BOWL
First Week of Lent - Care for God's Creation

Most of us have clean water whenever we want it. Ciro didn't have this experience. He and his neighbors in rural Guatemala had to carry water for miles to meet their village's needs. With the help of Catholic Relief Services, they were able to construct a water supply system. Disease abated as new sanitation made their village a healthier place to live. God formed Ciro, his neighbors and all of us and infused us with the breath of life. Your involvement in Operation Rice Bowl will help sustain that life, in ways as simple as making clean water accessible. CRS strives to be responsible steward of creation while pursuing sustainable development. Dirty water, deforestation and pollution don't contribute to a healthier future.

The Holy SPirit has gathered us together to listen to holy words that have the power to transform even the hardest of hearts. Today we are called to be poor in spirit, merciful, and bearers of God's peace and justice. As we begin the celebration of this Mass, let us remember that what we do here can never remain here. We must go forth from this place to bring the Good News to a hungry world. And for this we ask God for strength and sustenance.
The prophet Zephaniah calls us to seek the Lord, to see justice, and humility. This call is echoed in the beautiful words of today's Gospel, as Jesus preaches the Beatitudes, the central part of hsi sermon on the mount. The Beautitudes offer us a recipe for living lives of faithful service to God and to others. Let us be attentive to God's saving word and pray that our reward in heaven will be great.

RICE BOWL

In just a few days we will start our LEnten journey; our parish will again be participating in the Operation Rice Bowl program. Operation Rice Bowl is a program that allows us to learn about and help our less fortunate brothers and sisters around the world and here in our community. Through family participation with the ORB calendar we learn about some of the issues that those less fortunate face and what Catholic Relief Services is doing to help. This is a hand up not a hand out program that helps these people become self sufficient. Through our participation we help them and ourselves in four ways

We learn about their issues.

We pray for the Lord's assistance.

We give of our treasures.

We fast to give us a sense of solidary with them.

Please pick up a rice bowl and calendar for your family and paricipate in this very worthwhile program.

Women's CURSILLO (KER-SEE-O) 14-17 Feb. 2008 in Victoria, KS.
Cursillo is a "short course" or "short experience" in the fundamental teachings of Jesus as live with other Christians. If you want to be renewed in your Catholic faith, this may be what you have been searching for. It is for men and women (separate weekends). You must be at least 21 years old, Catholic, and in good standing (able to receive Holy Communion).

SCOUT NEWS
All Boy Scout and Cub Scouts are invited to celebrate Mass with Troop and Pack 41 on February 3, 2008, at 9:30 am for Scout Sunday. The Cub Scouts will have their Fellars Cake competition after each Mass during the Knights of Columbus Breakfast in the school cafeteria. Today we are in Ordinary time, a rather short three Sunday stretch that will bring us to the treshold of another Lenten season. Our Gospel picks up where last week's left off. In a real way, today is a continuation of Epiphany, for once again we have testimony about the manifestation of Jesus as Lord. John the Baptist announces that Jesus is the Lamb of God. Gathered together as people redeemed through the blood of the Lamb, we are filled with praise and gratitude.
John the Baptist directs the attention of the gathered crowds to the Lord Jesus, whom John refers to as the "Lamb of God." Our attention is focused now on the Lamb who speaks a word that redeems us and calls us to more dedicated discipleship. Let us listen attentively to the word of God and pray that we will respond to that word with actions taht help spread the good news of salvation.

We welcome to the Christian Community Nanya Ainsleigh Narciso, daughter of Vincent adn Heidi, and Samantha Elizabeth Daugherty, daughter of Vincent and Jerra. These children were baptized recently. May Gods blessing be with the families.

We extend our prayers and sympathy to the wife, family and friends of Robert Herron who passed away on the 10th. May God welcome into his loving arems and to Eternal Glory.

Sisters and Brothers, today the Christmas season draws to a close. Our eyes are once again focused on the one sent ot redeem us, Jesus the beloved Son of God. As this Mass begins, let us recognize that, through the sacrament of baptism, we have been united to Christ, in whom is all our hope.
Sisters and brothers, listen carefully to today's first reading. Once again we hear that the holy one of God wil open the eyes of the blind and bring light tothose who dwell in darkness. This, indeed, is good news that sustains us on our journey of faith. As God's voice thunders over the waters of the Jordon, let us pray that we will be counted amoung the holy ones of God.

Diocesan Renewal Days
January 14-17, 2008, Father Al will attend the Diocesan Renewal Days in Withita. Father will be leaving after morning Mass on Monday the 14th. There will be no morning Masses on 15-17.

We congratulate Jason Preston and Emily Vieyra on their commitment in the Sacrament of Marriage. May their love of each other and Christ continue to grow through out all their years.

We welcome to the Christian Community Sophia Lorraine Zimmerman and Emily Wolfe. These children were baptised recently. May God's blessings be with them and their families.

Sisters and brothers in Christ, the Holy Spirit gathers us together in this holy place to begin a new liturgical year of grace and peace. We open our minds and hearts to the transforming power of God's love. During Advent we acknowledge the presence of Christ in our hearts, our families, our parish, and our world. With praise and thanksgiving we enter this holy seaon.
The rich feast of Advent scriptures is spread before us today as we hear the prophetic word of Isaiah. His vision of God's kingdom challenges us to work for peace and justice. In a time when war grips too many areas of our world, let us allow these words to prompt us to be real peacemakers in our homes, our places of work, and in our neighborhoods. As the sacred word of God is proclaimed, let us be alert, awaiting the presence of Christ.

We welcome Father Jarett Konrade to our parish this weekend, who celebrated Masses. Please include him in your prayers of thanksgiving.

December 8th is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses will be celebrated Friday at 6:30 pm and Saturday morning at 8:00 and 9:30 am. Please make every effort to attend. Volunteers will be needed at all Masses. Please step forward.

We welcome to the Christian Community Tristin Lee Ortiz, child of Daniel & Rebecca. Also, Abigail Aliyah Fortanez, child of Robert & Alicia. These children were baptized last weekend. May God's love and blessings be with them.

A Nursing Home Christmas: It's that time of year for the Nursing Home Christmas Tree! The tree is located in the foyer of the church. The tags on the tree have items the residents want most for Christmas. Please take a tag from the tree, purchase and wrap the gifts, return the gifts (along with the tags) to the tree by December 19th for timely delivery to the nursing homes. The 5th, 6th and 7th through 12th grade band concert will be held in the school gym. A reception sponsored by the PTO will be held in the Assembly Room following the concert.

December 19th, 7:00 pm Music Program
The K through 4th grades music programs will be held in the church. The program will last about one hour and a reception will be held in the Assembly Room following the program.

December 21st, Baby Shower for Jesus
St. Xavier students will once again participate in a shower for Baby Jesus on Dec. 21. Students will offer wrapped baby gifts at Mass. The gifts will be taken to the school cafeteria where they will be opened and distributed to Birth line later that day. PTO will provide donuts for the shower.

Religious Education
Classes will be held on December 5, 12, and 19. No class will be held on December 26.

Sisters and brothers, the Holy Spirit has summoned us to this sacred place to be inspired by the saving power of God. With grateful hearts for all that God has accomplished in us and through us, we lift up our voices in praise and thanksgiving.
The word of God proclaimed today is a word of healing and comfort. At this Mass we bring all our needs to our loving and compassionate God. May the words we hear today inspire us to cry out to God for mercy, healing, and reconciliation. Let us be grateful for the opportunity to be fed so generously at the table of God's word.

ALL COUNCILS MEETING
On October 17, we will have our all councils meeting(Finance, School, and Parish) at the Knights of Columbus Hall, beginning at 7:00 pm. Please bring finger foods to share. Drinks may be ordered at the bar. Come early if you wish.

Sisters and brothers, the Holy Spirit once again summons us together in this holy place and asks us to focus on the challenges posed by the gospel. Today's Gospel is one that cuts to the heart of any society that espouses a consumersit mentality. Let us be open to what the Lord has in store for us today and ask for strength to respond to the Lord's challenges.
Today's first reading begins with the words "HEAR THIS." Let us heed this call and open our ears to listen to words that challenges us to the very core.

Father Al will be attending a workshop on "Medical Ethics" in Wichita on Thursday, September 27th. He will be returning Thursday night. There will be no morning Mass.

We welcome to Christian Community Kassidy Elise Jahnke, daughter of Eric and Kristal. Kassidy was baptized last weekend. May God's blessing be with all of you.

CARNIVAL
The St. Xavier School PTO will be holding its annual carnival on Sunday, Sept. 30, from 12-4pm in the school parking lot in the 200 block of North Washington. Parking will not be available in the parking lot after the 8:00 am mass that day. However, we will move the barricades for anyone with a handicapped sticker or license after that time. Everyone is invited to share in an afternoon of food, fun, and games. A food court will be serving hambergers, hot dogs, sausages, baked beans, homemade pies and other goodies. Games will include a fishpond, bingo, cakewalk, football toss, dunk tank, jail, and a pie throw. In case of inclement weather, activities will be held in the school gymnasium. We hope you will be able to join us.

Do you have some old stuffed animals that are in nice condition that you would like to get rid of? Is so, the junior class at St. Xavier would like to take them off your hands for their carnival booth on Sept. 30! MEDJUGORJE SPEAKER
Wayne Weible will speak Saturday, Sept. 29 at 7 pm at St. Nicholas of Myra Parish, 2901 E. 13th St, Hays and Sunday, Sept. 30 at 1 pm in Hoisington High School Auditorium, 218 E. 7th St., Hoisington, KS. Weible is the author of five books on Medjugorje, has traveled to Medjugorje 80 times, and personally knows the visionaries.

Religious Education
Preparation for the sacraments requires that children attend the parish program for at least two years. Participation is recommended every year from at least 1st through 9th grades. Sisters and brothers, today we are reminded that we are asked to sacrifice much in order to follow in the footsteps of the Lord Jesus. Let us be grateful to God for this community of faith, which assures us that we never travel the Christian journey without the help and support of our brothers and sisters. As this Mass begins, we ask God to strengthen us on this journey.
Today's Gospel is one of the most difficult for the modern believer to understand. Jesus' words sound too harsh. After all, isn't this the same Jesus who gave us the law of love? As Christians, we need to struggle with these hard sayings. As we listen to these words, let us be attentive to the reminder in today's passage from the book of Wisdom -- we simply can't think big enough to understand the Lord's intentions. We need the assistance of the Holy Spirit, whose presence we acknowledge in this holy place.

LIVING ROSARY
In conjunction with St. Patrick Parish, KC, KS Living Rosary, we would like to invite you to stay after the 5:15 pm Mass on September 15, to pray the Rosary of Peace. This will give us a start for October, the month of the Rosary. As Pope John Paul II said in his Angelus on September 29, 2002, "I want to entrust the great cause for peace to the rosary once again. We are faced by an international situation full of tensions,..... " These words are as profound today as they were then. Please join us.

Brothers and sisters, today God gathers us together and speaks a word not easy to hear. A culture that values the amassing of material possessions above all else is unlikely to take kindly to today's word of God. We often are deluded into thinking that the more we have the happier we will be. Deep down we know this is simply not true. Let us be open and vulnerable to the challenges today's Mass issues for each of us and for this community of faith.
The message of today's scripture readings is quite simple: keep your eyes fixed on Christ Jesus rather than on the possessions of this world. Let us allow this challenging word of God to penetrate and change our hearts. For this kind of change, we rely on the power of the Holy Spirit who is present in this holy place.

NEW PARISHIONERS' RECEPTION
     New parishioners and their families will be hosted to a new parishioners' reception following the 11 am Mass on Sunday, August 12, 2007. Location of the reception is the Knights of Columbus Hall, 126 W. 7th Street, downtown, Junction City.
     St. Xavier Parish will host the reception with a potluck luncheon served by the parishioners. Please be our guests and celebrate by getting to know our parish better.
     Children always welcome with supervised fun and games for all children.

Discernment Retreat for Women
The Dominican Sisters of Great Bend are hosting a "Come Risk the Sacred Journey" weekend at 3600 Broadway in Great Bend, Kansas. They invite single, Catholic women, ages 18-45, to a discernment weekend, beginning at 7:00 pm Friday, August 17th and ending at 1:00 pm Sunday, August 19th, 2007. There is no cost for the weekend. ST. XAVIER GOLF CLASSIC
It is time once again for the annual St. Xavier Golf Classic. This event is in support of the St. Xavier Schools. The tournament will begin on Sunday August 19th at 8:00 am. Registration will begin at 7:00 am. We invite you to come spend the day with us playing golf at the lovely Rolling Meadows Golf Course. You will also be supporting a choice for parents to send their children to a Catholic School for a religious education.

The St. Xavier School Activities Committee is selling advertisment, Super, Patron and Memorial boosters to go into the Junior High/Senior High home game programs for the up coming school year. Order forms are available at each of the Church's doors. Your support will help to defray the costs of our student's extra curricular activities. The deadline to turning the forms is August 17th. Forms may be turned in at the school office or call Delores Vollenweider at 238-1133, Chris Robison at 238-6805, or Julie Booth at 762-3797.

Religious Education
Registration will be held on August 11-12 and August 18-19 after Masses in the RCIA room, Building C. This program is for the children in Preschool (4 year olds) through 9th grade who do not attend St. Xavier School. Also, if your child has not been confirmed in the 9th grade and wishes to receive this sacrament, we will arrange special sessions for them.

We are looking for someone who would be willing to team teach in First Grade. There is an experienced teacher who will be responsible for organizing the classes, but who would like to work with another adult. This is a chance for someone who would like to help in this very important church ministry.

Teacher's assistants are still needed. Those teenagers who have been confirmed are welcome as well as adults.

Teen Mass and Picnic by the Lake

WHO: All youth in grades 7-12 and their parents. Bring a friend if you like. You do not have to be Catholic!

MASS BEGINS AT 3 PM
The Celebrant is Father Jerett Konrade. (This Mass counts as your Sunday Obligation.) Picnic food will be available following Mass. Please bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on during Mass.
There is a $2.00 charge. RSVP and pay this charge to the Parish Office by August 19th. In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved to St. Michael Parish Center at 210 East Sixth St. in Chapman, KS.

The Holy Spirit gathers us this Lord's Day to hear the story of Abraham bargaining with God for the lives of the innocent people of Sodom. In addition to their immorality, the people of Sodom were infamous for horrendous treatment of strangers and travelers. In the past few weeks we have heard scripture readings that focus on the virtue of hospitality. Let us heed the call to welcome the stranger and show Christian hospitality to all who enter this holy place.
Today's readings teach us about various aspects of prayer. Abraham's conversation with God reveals that prayer is quite often marked by persistence. In the Gospel, the Lord Jesus gives us the great gift of the Lord's Prayer. After offering this prayer, Jesus then outlines the kind of lives those who utter this prayer are called to live. Let us be attentive to God's saving word.

Mission Appeal
This weekend Father John Pawlikosksi a servite priest, is celebrating Mass with us. Father John is an author/editor of 15 books and contributor to numerous journals. Please welcome him as you would welcome Christ in your midst. Father John is giving the mission appeal for this year.
Father Al will be gone till August 2nd.

Brothers and sisters, we have heeded the call of the Lord and have assembled in this place to give God praise and honor. Here we are inspired by God's living word and nourished at the table of the Eucharist. With wonder and awe in God's presence, we begin this Mass with hearts filled with expectant joy.
The Scriptures challenge us to examine the law of love is not something that is beyond our reach. As believers, this law is planted within us. Let us find in today's scriptures the inspiration and strength we need to be Christ for one another.

MISSIONARY
Father John T. Pawlikowski, from the Order of Friar Servants of Mary, will be in our parish on the weekend of July 28-29th for our annual appeals to the mission work in South Africa. Saint Xavier Annual Golf Classic
The annual St. Xavier Golf Classic will be held on Sunday, Auguast 19th at Rolling Meadows Golf Course. This is a 4-person scramble to benefit the St. Xavier Schools. The cost is $60 per person, which includes 2 mulligans and lunch. The tournament is limited to the first 32 teams, so send in your registration early. On Thursday, July 19th Circle I will have their annual luncheon outing to Mr. K's Farm in Abilene. Please meet in the Church parking lot (near the office entrance). Cars will depart at 11:00 am. After lunch, the group will visit the chocolate factory.

In today's Gospel we hear the story of the sending out of the seventy-two. They went to the towns and villages in pairs, proclaiming that the kingdom of God was at hand. We have been assembled here, some of us two by two, in order to hear the Lord's call once again. Let us pray during this holy Mass that we will be strengthened in our resolve to call others to life in the kingdom of God.
We welcome the sacred word of God this day with hearts open to transformation. This word has the power to change us. As this word is proclaimed in our midst, let us receive it with hearts filled with joy. Let us respond by echoing the sentiments of the psalmist:
"Let all the earth cry out to God with joy."

We congratulate Becky Striggow and Andrew Liebau, who were married Saturday. May your love for each other continue to grow every day in the presence of Christ.

BAKE SALE
Following each Mass on Sunday July 8, 2007, there will be a fundraiser for the Morris County Relay for Life. All money raised will be donated to the American Cancer Society to fund promising Cancer research projects. For a separate donation you may purchase a luminary to be displayed during the candle lighting ceremony.

Sister and brothers, the Holy Spirit has summoned us from our homes to gather in this sacred place. We are headed for Jerusalem, and our journey with Christ along that road is a kind of traveling school of discipleship. The Lord calls us to continue to travel with him on that road. Let us be strong in our conviction to follow Christ.
Today's reading give us examples of ways we can respond to the Lord's call. Elisha abandons his livelihood and his family to become Elijah's attendant. The Lord Jesus demands a single-hearted response to the call to follow him. Saint Paul tells us that our response is summed up in one statement: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

WE NEED YOUR HELP
    Request interested parishioneres to serve on the Parish Council as members of the maintenance committee. Looking for two or three parishioners to serve on this important committee.
    Responsibilities include working with Father Al and parish council regarding the maintenance of the parish facilities. Prioritize projects, coordinating with contractors and procuring prospective bids on jobs. Identifying and coordinating volunteer projects. Briefing parish council on progress of projects.

CURSILLO
Men's Cursillo weekend is scheduled for July 26-29, 2007, in Oakley, KS. Cursillo is a short course in the fundamental teaching of Jesus as lived with other Christians. It is not a retreat. A candidate must be Catholic and over 18 years old. Any person wishing spiritual growth who is emotionally and spiritually healthy will be deeply impressed and pleased with the Cursillo weekend. Saint Xavier School Restructure
St. Xavier School will restructure beginning July 1st. The school will have a Co-Principals;

Lori Balderrama, who certified in the State of Kansas as a School Administrator

Roger Morris, who will be the Principal of Technology and Athletics.

Other changes have been made to best utilize the strength of our teachers. We will have more details at a later date.

Today God gathers us together to celebrate the birth of St. John the Baptist. During the course of the liturgical years, when certain feasts fall on a Sunday, we set aside our usual calendar of ordinary Sundays and focus on a particular feast. Today is such a day. John the Baptist was the forerunner of Christ. He prepared the way for the Lord. As we remember with joy the birth of this remarkable figure, let us pray that we, like John the Baptist, will lead others to Christ.

We welcome to the Christian Community Keira Michelle Jones, child of Kevin and Kathleen; Elijah Carter and Delaney Addison Fawcett, children of Todd and Jessica, who were baptized last weekend. May the loving God be with you all and your families.

Jubille Celebration of Marriage

The purpose of this invitation, is to welcome people, who are not Catholic and perhaps not yet Christians, to explore the teachings of the Catholic Church. The process is designed to help a person grow in a personal relationship with God and better understand what faith teaches about God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and human life. Sisters and brothers, with grateful hearts we worship God for the gifts so generously bestowed on us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In him, all things are made new.
Today we open our hearts to receive Christ's new commandment that we love one another as he has loved us. Throughout this Easter season we ponder that love, which gained for us the promise of eternal life. As we are drawn into the vision of Saint John in the book of Revelation, let us pray for a strengthening of our love for one another.

The month of May is dedicated to Mary, Mother of God. Let us pray with Mary to her Son, now and always.

MAY FRIENDSHIP DAY
All women of the parish are invited to join in prayer at 11:30 am, on Friday, Ma 11 at the 1st United Methodist Church, at 804 N. Jefferson for May Friendship Day. May Friendship Day unites Christian Women in a common worship experience building and strengthening friendly relationships within our community. This year's theme encourages us to dialogue about the things that will create compassionate and peaceful friendsips with voiceless and faceless sisters in our city, community, and the world. An overwhelming number of households headed by women still live in poverty. Our concern is for the empowerment of women and children who fall through the cracks of an unfair system. Sponsored by Church Women United, this annual ecumenical event is an opportunity to worship together and show our support for a just, peaceful and caring world. This servie will include a salad luncheon and the Least Coin collection, so please bring a salad to share and coins for the offering.

God gathers us together on this sacred day as a shepard gathers the sheep. Let us listen to the voice of the Good Shepard as we lift our hearts in prayer and song on this day of joy and gladness.
Each year on this Fourth Sunday of Easter we focus on the image of Jesus the Good Shepard. As member of this holy flock we open our ears to listen to his voice in the sacred word proclaimed this day.

CHRISTMAS IN APRIL
We thank Iris Sanders and Family for their gift of a riding lawn mower to St. Xavier. This will be used faithfully with volunteers helping to make our grounds beautiful.

SDCCW
East Vicariate SDCCW will meet Monday, April 30th at 9:00 am in Clay Center at St. Peter & Paul Hall. There will be a noon luncheon with a free will offering.

We welcome to the Christian Community CADENCE YSABEL TURNBOW, child of Michael and Meritess. Cadence was baptized last Sunday. May God's Blessing be with her family.
