Tears dry on Their Own

2012-02-04T04:08:00.000-08:00

I am not going to apologise for the unashamed use of Amy Winehouse lyrics for the title of this post Although the tears were not flowing when I was viewing the Jean Paul Gaultier couture 2012 collection on style.com, I imagine there were floods in Paris when the catwalk showed on the 25th January this year.

Spring/Summer 2012 hit

2012-02-03T13:00:00.000-08:00

Just found this post that I hadn't actually posted??

So I never really rated Julien Macdonald, my only explanation is his line for Debenhams...

However! a new season and a new year has hollered a whole lot of love for this designer
It has also just been announced that the label is to unveil 'Julien Macdonald bespoke' at the start of 2012 due to an increasing demand from private clients, personally I think he should just stick to that. Going to read into sister lines as part of my dissertation research, need to figure this shit out.

#Obsessed with all the new #Spring\Summer2012 campaigns that are starting to surface on everyones radar. Mulberry's is #killer, I had to post it being a #Brightongal and all. This series was shot by Tim Walker, styled by Edward Enninful and modelled by Frida Gustavsson and Lindsey Wixson. #totesamaze

Easily the most badass thing you will have seen this year

2012-02-03T10:27:00.000-08:00

India Knight just retweeted the new video for M.I.A's latest track 'Bad Girls' , I had to share

Reasons I like it:

1. It features just about every rap video cliche

2. There are drivers doing car tricks

3. M.I.A looks amazing

4. She also dresses amazingly

5. It involves a Middle Eastern desert party

6. There are no exploding children

That last point you will understand if any of you have seen her 'Born Free' video from French Director Romain Gavras, he is an infamous portrayer of gritty, realistic, flashing images. The Guardian covered it back in April 2010 making a valid point that MIA's message about ethnic cleansing was diluted with way too many shocking images to make a serious point. In brief a set of grim looking policemen are conducting raids on grimmer-looking blocks of flats and targeting only young men with ginger hair. These men are rounded up, put in armoured buses, and taken away. I've posted the video below because I'm currently doing a unit on fashion film this term at university so I am sharing my research.

Crazy 9 minute shit for a new single, no?

Expect a lot more video postings over the next few weeks, research purposes and all.

If it stops being fun there won't be much of a House left

I am a Henry Holland girl. Straight up.
Gavin Watsons, punk youth photos have inspired a uniformed skinhead/punk aesthetic for House of Holland Spring/Summer 2012

These are some of my favorite looks from the Spring/Summer 2012 catwalk

This season Holland also introduces his own brand denim (he has only ever collaborated with Lee in the past) and I recks it will be tres successful, smart move. I love the bleach splattered ones from this collection, which give a fluffy cloud effect, super cute against the rebellious python skin and metallic fish net pieces.

They sailed away for a year and a day

Thought I would share Natalie Anne Moran's first collection with you. Even though these pieces have been out since before April I am still in love with this collection.
Natalie's interpretation of cartoons and underwear which she hailed as inspiration is sooo far from what I would have conjured up from these two key words! Far from harsh and wacky, this collection is soft, pretty and fun.
Launching in 2011 the line comprises variations on the theme of classic T-Shirts and jeans re-hashed with embroidery, print, cut, unexpected detailing, a fusion of fabrics and a dash of mischief.

I recently wrote the new bio for her website which is currently being updated, so make sure you check back in the next few weeks xx

2011-12-06T07:42:00.001-08:00

Long time no speak, so expect a flood of posts now!

I am currently working one day a week for independent womenswear designer Natalie Anne Moran and we have just finished the Spring/Summer '12 Lookbook (as styled by Kyanisha Morgan). Definitely enjoying being a PA to the lovely lady and have also been made an author to her blog so will be dividing my time between Style A-Y and Natalia Supernova!

For her latest collection of day to night pieces Natalie has taken influence from photographer Alice Hawkins, her photographs of Blackpool and Vegas have inspired a colour saturated and embellished range of pieces.

I want me the argyle crop tee and spotted tulle maxi!

If you haven't already then make sure you check her stuff, she has just launched her second collection which is stocked in Shop172 on Brick Lane and can be found online at Styligion and Not Just A Label

Hallo

2011-10-30T06:47:00.001-07:00

I dressed up multiple times this Halloween. Outfit count hit four before the 31st even came. Outfit four involved my interpretation of a skeleton, none of that Nicki Minaj business in V Magazine though, instead I look back and think I verged on mental patient, Hannibal Lecter style? Less obvious of course, and I could hide behind the T-shirt (which I bought; carbon copies can be found in Urban Outfitters or make like a smart one and do it yourself)

'Lindsay Lohan'

2011-10-24T07:45:00.000-07:00

Most people saw this film as the re-birth of a forever sober Lindsay Lohan, the 'new star of art'. Bitch please. I simply saw it as an opportunity for painter Richard Phillips, to show his skills as a director.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the artists work, queue the Wiki explanation:

'Phillips is known for his large-scale glossy hyper-realistic paintings, recalling the pictorial style of magazines from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s and reflecting traditions of popular image culture. His paintings represent close-up portraits, predominantly of women from fashion and soft porno magazines, but also persons from the fields of pop music and politics.'

NB: He says: "My pictures involve a kind of wasted beauty - that's always been a thread in my work."

Phillips chose LiLo, not for her problems, but because she is a combination of the fantastic and the real.

Reminiscent of classic bombshell swimsuit moments the film is the quintessence of convention, to the point of banality (and that's the point). Viewers should expect as much from Phillips' filmic debut as they should from a Calvin Klein Obsession ad, but with a much better soundtrack.

Watch the 90 second film below...

I think this psychological portrait of popular cultures tragic heroine is bloody beautiful. And breath.

The part where I went to New York for a few days...

2011-08-17T08:31:00.000-07:00

The McQueen Retrospective was my reason, but if its possible to fit everything and anything of NYC into 84 hours, then I did.
Here is an edited photo diary, my Pa would say you are lucky, he had to sit through 500+ photos. I may have seen the majority of New York through a lense, but the pics, they ain't got nothing on the real thing.

McQueen @ the MET: New York City

2011-08-14T03:51:00.000-07:00

This time last week, the Metropolitan Museum of Art closed its doors to the Costume Institutes 'Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty' exhibition '. 661,509 visitors made this the eighth most visited exhibition in the museums history.
I was lucky enough to be there on May 4th when it was first opened to the public.
Below is a review piece I wrote; written and reviewed in the style of AnOther Magazine, for my university Publications project.

Other worlds

Alexander McQueen

The late designer,

is brought to life at The Metropolitan Museum of Art,

in New York City

Alexander McQueen created stories; from England’s rape on Scotland, to a primitive focus on the food chain and a final collection based on a place where humanity no longer exists, McQueen’s ‘confessional poetry’, as it has been duly described, intended anything but sweet affectations. “I’m a romantic schizophrenic” he said, a designer who intended his collections “not to wow the crowd during a show, but because I love it.” ‘Savage Beauty’ is the fitting title of the new retrospective showcasing the works of Alexander McQueen, only 14 months after his death. So soon after his passing meant this exhibition held very raw memories, contributors and collaborators including Sarah Burton, Daphne Guinness and Andrew Bolton (curator) were held together by the ever present voice of Lee Alexander McQueen.

The exhibition, which opened at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City this week, has already seen thousands of people wander through its sectioned features; curator Andrew Bolton has organised the designers collections and pieces into seven ‘Romantic’ associated parts - Mind, Gothic, Nationalism, Exoticism, Primitivism, Naturalism and a ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ - whether to appreciate his work, or in an attempt to find out more about the ‘tortured soul’ who committed suicide in February 2010, the showcase has certainly provoked curiosity.

The exhibition itself felt extremely alive, despite the faceless, austere mannequins, the mood wasn’t always melancholic, there was an atmosphere of amazement and appreciation, the pieces on display were not just ‘fashion’, for McQueen fashion was just the medium, and as a result, something altogether quite fanciful is showcased here. Medical slides, antelope horns, duck plumage and human hair are just some of the unconventional materials that will continue to baffle onlookers after they have left, except, this time the intrigued will have a more learned understanding of the mind behind the creations.Whatever the opinion, McQueen proved that something is beautiful because it is driven by subjective perceptions of the individual, not by objective assessments of appearance.

The A/W Amy Winehouse for Fred Perry collection was confirmed on Monday. I'm still obsessed with my twin tipped vest from her last collection, but this season the lady came up cute, its hounds-tooth crazy but the fit and attention to retro is what attracts me. Fred Perry's idea to collaborate with the singer, although short lived, was completely worth it. Something tells me this time the 'Amy Winehouse' labelled pieces won't make the sale rail.

Bear dank

2011-07-20T04:37:00.000-07:00

It's a Kidder-minster saying; " 'dank' pretty much means good so like 'bear dank' means really good I guess", is what my flatmate Harrison said to me (his best friend Dan Jordan is the brains behind this brand). From the place between Birmingham and Liverpool, I think it might be Worcestershire? These Logo and graphic images are brought to life in T-shirts, hoodies and the like. I purchased this 'YES LAD!' one from Black Alter Apparel a month or so ago.

Sure.

Like my obsession with T-shirts, I am ab it obsessed with this effect on my friends iphone camera. Need refrain from doing two posts next to each other with the same image effect in future!
