Actually Good Pull-On Shorts You’ll Want To Live In All Summer Long

In the name of comfort and ease, we have collectively graduated to the *actually* good pull-on short era, without any shame (even my younger team agrees, this isn’t a middle-aged thing anymore). Now, admittedly, I think that a lot of these can look like boxers or pajama bottoms if not styled, but once I took the time to add a few simple things, I’m convinced there is no need for stomach-constricting buttons or zippers this summer (besides my favorite two pairs of jeans shorts – these and these). From casual to even fancy, here are the pull-on shorts I thought were absolutely 10/10s (and I tried on A TON). Linen Shorts | Linen Shirt | Straw Hat | Huaraches | Sunglasses

Linen? Check. Classic pattern? Check. Comfort, high quality, and affordable? Check. These pull-on shorts from Quince have a nice trouser vibe despite being elastic waist (and it’s a soft elastic, and it doesn’t cut in). These look good soft and wrinkled, so also great to travel with (and I will). I’m embarrassed to say that the shoes and shirt are also Quince (only because I think I’m more creative than just buying from one brand – but they are all so good). I’m wearing a small in the shorts and the shirt. The hat is a weekend staple.

Camo Shorts | Linen Shirt | Scarf (similar) | Boat Shoes

I’ve had these for a while (along with the pull-on pants version), and they are FANTASTIC in style, comfort, and shape. Please size down (these are an XS). They have a slight flair, which I think is crucial to making the leg look nice. I wouldn’t say they are polished (they are camo after all), but I do think you could throw a linen blazer on and it could count for casual Friday wear. I wear them all the time.

Eyelet Shorts | Puff Sleeve Shirt | Mary Jane Flats | Woven Bag | Woven Hat

How cute are these eyelet pull-on shorts? Think brunch or poolside, but could be dressed up with a white linen top and a cute bag (which I kinda did here). They have a thicker waistband that sits a bit higher – it’s not super tight or anything, but if you like a casual low-waisted fit (like the first two), know that these have more structure (great for long-torso’d folk who love high-waisted shorts and pants). The blouse is the raspberry version of the white one that I wear so often. I’m also so excited about that red purse.

I was seriously worried that this Gap set would look like pajamas (or like I was in a cult). But once I styled it out, I was VERY into it. It’s soft, gauzy, breathable, and the elastic waist is gentle and can sit high or low-waisted. It came in navy, white, and black too (some sizes were sold out). I’m wearing an XS top and S shorts. I LOVE the leopard pattern (on the sandals) with this set.

I was so annoyed that, of course, the cutest and fanciest pull-on shorts are also a bit splurgier, but these guys are SO CUTE. I’m wearing a medium, and the fit is fantastic and yet doesn’t wrinkle (I haven’t washed them yet). They aren’t silk, but they feel like it, with more structure (the leg flare is fun and flirty). I feel like these could be great city shorts and vacation shorts because they look really polished and high-end.

I thought these pull-on shorts would fall in the “boxer” category, but look what styling can do!! They are higher-waisted, and the elastic is tighter (I’m wearing a small, and it’s a bit tight for my tummy, so size up or skip if you carry weight there). But if you can generally wear a higher-waisted short like these, they are super cute. (And my Gen Z team wants you to know that the boxer look is the actual look :))

Cheers to Target for designing a fluttery, flirty, drapey, soft, and oddly high-end looking linen pull-on shorts (the strings give The Great). Paired with the linen shirt and yes, the beach bag (which I could only find in-store at Target right now, sorry!) I’m absolutely going to be wearing this so much this summer. I was so comfortable, it was so breathable, so cute, and nothing cut in. I felt like I was absolutely wearing pajamas.

Chambray Shorts | Linen Shirt | Checkered Vans | Trucker Hat

Another pair of drawstring, easy-to-wear shorts that would be great with a little tank top, or if you are like me, a drapey linen shirt. These needed dressing up IMHO because they did really look like boxer shorts before I paired them with the blouse and Vans. They are great with a suit, too – just so thin, with cute stitching and a nice drawstring (a tiny bit of elastic, but it’s super soft). These come in a lot of colors, btw.

For those of you who don’t want a teeny tiny short, I was sooooo impressed with this pair from The Gap. They are more mid-length, but had a really nice 6″ hem that made the look more high-end and were still so relaxed, breathable, and comfortable. BTW, I go back and forth between the J. Crew linen shirt (with the pocket) and the Quince linen shirt (no pocket). Both are pretty perfect. The J. Crew is 10% better in drape and pocket, but it’s twice as expensive (but on sale right now).

Denim Pull-On Shorts | Linen Shirt | Huaraches | Hat (no longer available)

No pull-on shorts post would be complete without an elastic-waisted denim short. The Gap delivered here. These are so comfy you could ride a bike in them (they have a lot of stretch). I’m wearing a small, which fits, so it’s pretty true to size, but if you are in between, maybe size up, not down. The elastic waist is soft and gentle, but it does look like elastic, so it’s better for no-tucking. These are extremely comfortable (and come in a few different washes).

But I Need It: Storage Cabinets That Look Like Art

Welcome to the 2nd installment of the “But I Need It” series. Check out the first one if you missed it. It’s a series for the design-obsessed (likely all of you;)) about the things that are on our Pinterest boards, we are swooning hard over. Today, I am going to be talking about wood storage cabinets that look like pieces of art. Clearly, my Pinterest feed is filled with wood objects, but it’s truly just the best material, so no complaints here. And look, I love a simple and classic storage cabinet, dresser, etc., but when I see pieces like these (mostly vintage), I yearn for more uniqueness in our furniture. The main issue is, of course, affordability because making pieces like that isn’t cheap. But if nothing else, I hope this post is wonderful eye candy, inspo to get the creative juices going, and hey, maybe even the start of a DIY project. Speaking of…

I saw this storage cabinet a few years ago, and my jaw was on the floor. Wouldn’t say I’m a polka dot person, but I am a shapes lover (I know that sounds confusing, but it’s different to me). Now, this piece went for over $18,000. Yes, I meant to put that many zeros…so at this moment, my tax bracket does not allow for these kinds of furniture purchases. But what I do have are some carpentry skills, a can-do attitude (even if it wanes at times), and the kicker…a dad who knows how to build things. I always help, though. It’s a luxury I do not take for granted!

This cabinet was my creation, inspired by the vintage one that now lives in my living room. It’s clearly not similar, but it did get the fire going, and I love that it looks special and unique to my home (of course, I know circle cutouts are on trend, but this piece is one of a kind to me). I tell this story, I guess, to legitimize my love for what I’m about to talk about and to show you that you can get your hands dirty too:)

Geometric Storage Cabinets

This was the next piece that sparked the idea for this post. If my dad and I could make this, I would call him right now! I think this one is a little out of our wheelhouse, ha. Anyway, it’s pretty incredible that if those 3D panels were flattened out, it would still be a beautiful piece, but look very simple. But WITH the 3D geometric element, it’s absolutely heartstopping. This photo is in my dreams for sure.

Now, not every category in this post has new and shoppable pieces, but these two also popped up on my Pinetest, and they perfectly fit this look. The cabinet fronts are just so unexpected and cool. I really could see them in any kind of home that wants to add some edge and eclecticness.

Painted Storage Cabinets

HOW COOL IS THIS!!!? Talk about art meeting function. I love how the shapes of the painted parts are sharp while the scenes themselves are soft and serene. This artist’s pieces are unreal. I mean, look at the texture he created on the wood. While I’m not saying art like this can be replicated, maybe it could free you up to think of how you can personalize your own pieces in your home.

No words. This Swedish storage cabinet is so special. I’m not one for necessarily wanting wildflowers as a motif in my home, but for this, I would happily make an exception. Just stunning. Plus, how sweet are the half-circle plates and round knobs? That’s a design feature we can at least replicate and add to a cabinet of our own.

I don’t think I could talk about painted storage cabinets without including BDDW. Another absolute dream brand to have in my home. The details are unreal, and the flowers feel both modern and nostalgic. Also, I think their hardware might be my favorite of all time.

Here are two more easily shoppable pieces! The floral design is actually made of wooden pegs, so not exactly painted, but I felt like it was in the same spirit. It’s pretty special and in the right home, would be incredible. Then the painted one is what I would want to put in a nursery as fast as I could. It’s unbelievably precious, the colors are amazing, and I adore the striped base frame. Add to cart!

3D Block Storage Cabinets

More shapes and blocks! My favorite:) These are actually a set of three smaller storage cabinets, vintage from the 70s. I just think the way all of the rectangular and square wood pieces are laid out takes a simple idea and creates something so special.

This one is a little more intricate, and I know I’m overusing the word special, but my god, how could I not with these? The circles added in the center of the cabinet door are giving me big ole heart eyes.

Multi-Combination Cabinet | Lego 3 Drawer Sideboard

Here are some shoppable options! Simple but still so good, and gives you that wood-on-wood 3D geometric style. The light wood one can be used as one piece, or you can buy more to create a larger cabinet. The circle front sideboard is such a cool statement piece that’s very me:)

“Paneled” Storage Cabinets

I don’t think “paneled” is totally the right descriptor for this category, but go with me, please. Let’s talk about this exquisite piece of furniture. I cannot believe it’s from 1930. That’s really just an admittance to my design history naivety. This just looks so modern to me, but also has the most perfect amount of patina. The materials and the way they are used could honestly make me emotional. Y’all, IT’S SO SPECIAL.

This one is far more classically paneled:) I love the tone of the pine, I love the circles on either end, and I LOVE that the maker “camouflaged” knobs were the two middle circles would be. It’s not fancy, but it is incredible.

Lee Tall Dresser

Here is a modern take on this category style by Sara Sherman Samuel! I believe she worked on this square door detail with her dad on doors she was designing for a home. She then incorporated it into her line with Lulu and Georgia, and I love it so much. I wish I had space for it!

Varying Drawers Storage Cabinets

Another thing I love on any kind of storage cabinet or dresser are differently sized drawers and doors! It adds so much interest and playfulness. How incredible is this piece above??

This one is also from the 30s but is more of the primitive style. But don’t you just love the mix of doors and drawers and their differing sizes? Plus, the circles are such an unexpected but fun detail.

This is a bar cabinet, but what drew me to this one is that little random drawer! Anytime I see a drawer like this, I immediately love it, no questions asked. It just gets me excited:)

This was a storage cabinet from CB2 that is no longer available, that I loved when I first saw it. CB2 typically takes more risks in terms of the styles they sell, but it always gives me hope when big box stores take a chance on really cool and unique pieces like this.

Rolling Shutter Cabinet | Saporiti Bauletto Cabinet

Ok, both of these are available for purchase, but they are going to cost a pretty penny…SORRY! I really just wanted you all to see them. The rolling shutter cabinet doesn’t exactly fit this category, but it’s too cool not to include. It’s not crazy expensive at first glance, but it is in Italy, so the shipping likely won’t be cheap. The other cabinet is quite the showstopper, and that shape should be made more because it’s really amazing!

Raw Wood Storage Cabinets

I love wood in all its forms, but there is something about almost untouched, unstained, and unlaquered wood that’s really amazing. That is, of course, as long as it’s done well, like these little storage cabinets above.

Or this one! The two different woods used (one for the frame and one for the drawers) add such a subtle but awesome dimension. Plus, can you even handle the “knobs”?? Gimme more of those cutouts!

I know. It’s stunning. The texture of that wood with the delicate curves around the legs is simplicity and perfection at its finest.

One Tall Vintage Storage Cabinet:)

I WANT THIS CABINET BAD! I mean, get out of here with that single door, and its effortless cool edge. One pin I saw said it was a 1950s Italian wardrobe, and that feels right to me. It’s yet another example of how it doesn’t take a lot of crazy detail to make something unbelievably incredible.

Curtain Solutions: Let’s Talk About Curtains That Are Too Short Or Narrow (+ 5 Actually Good Ways to Make Them Work)

Have you ever had a problem you wanted to find a solution for that most people would hear about and advise you to just “Ditch it and start over?” That scenario is what I’m dealing with right now in my daughter’s bedroom with her curtains. Let me rewind about a decade first, though, to give you some quick context that might clarify why I’m unwilling to scratch a piece of home decor that is giving me a bit of a headache.

Way back before I was a mother, before I left Florida for California (and obviously, WAY before I left California for North Carolina), I would spend my lunch breaks from work cruising the aisles of either the nearby ReStore for thrifted gems or the Calico Corners for discounted fabric. One of those lunch breaks, I stumbled upon a fabric that was very much not my style, but I was transfixed by it (and the price). It was a heavyweight linen with such pretty watercolor flowers throughout. I wasn’t much for florals back then, let alone the color purple, but something tugged at my heart that day and whispered, “Get this fabric. You’ll want it for your daughter one day.”

There were, of course, zero guarantees I’d have a daughter, or that said daughter would even care for this fabric, but I was handing over my payment in a haze of future “what ifs” before I could talk myself out of something I didn’t need. I bought the whole deadstock bolt, which ended up being about enough fabric for two curtain panels of roughly 96 inches in length, and soon after, I actually made those curtain panels. They sat in a plastic storage container for nearly a decade, waiting patiently for their turn to cover a window…any window! In all my moves, friends helping me to pack up would ask if I was going to donate them, and every time, it felt like a ridiculous proposition. DONATE THEM? MY FUTURE DAUGHTER’S CURTAINS? No way.

Fast forward to our last home, which housed my (ACTUAL!) daughter’s first bedroom. She had one large window in there, and when we first toured the place, I knew those curtains were ready to take center stage. They were the perfect size for the width and height of the window, as if by the work of Calico Corners destiny. But then we moved to North Carolina, and my daughter’s new bedroom no longer had that one ideal window; it had two, instead, separated just enough that two panels didn’t make sense anymore.

As we needed to block the harsh afternoon light, I decided to put them up anyway (with an added blackout lining I had on hand). The resulting look was wispy and too narrow to even fully be stretched across a single window or rod.

Case in point:

this ballerina on the wall was actually in my childhood bedroom! my mother keeps everything, and brought this to evelyn on her latest trip.

When the window was open, it wasn’t, like, awful. I mean, I knew the design editor in me would critique how thin the panels were flanking the windows, but the mother in me who hoarded curtain panels for 10 years kept making excuses for them.

“We won’t be there that long, I hope. No one will care or even see these.” or “Does it really even matter, really?” But I can’t shrug off the disappointment I feel every time I go to close things up for the night, especially because light spills so much out the sides and my daughter cleverly tries to evade bedtime because it’s “still daytime outside,” as she claims.

As a reminder, per design rules, curtains should be at the very least 1.5x the width of the span you’re trying to cover, though I prefer the look of 2x. This was like…0.8x.

I was tempted to just cut my losses, but honestly, sometimes, you just want to figure something out, both as a money and/or resource saver, but also because it feels really freaking good.

So, here’s what I’m considering as my options to take these curtains from womp-womp to woo-hoo! And keep reading, because while my issue might be a bit niche, I’m exploring other curtain extension ideas for anyone who doesn’t want to replace their draperies but wants to make them work, instead.

Curtain Solutions #1: Add Complementary Panels

The easiest and probably least expensive option for me here today is to find panels in one of the colors from the original curtain, and add them either to the inside or outside of the curtain rod. My daughter’s favorite color is purple, so I hunted around for a similar gray-lavender pulled from one of the large flowers on the print:

The color isn’t right (too red, needs more blue/gray), and of course, in Photoshop, it stands out so much because the lighting on the isn’t the same, but not a horrendous option. Not great, though.

I tried a neutral that would blend more into the wall, and liked that better, actually:

This warm neutral space is very chic and posh, and if you flip through all the slides, you’ll see a smattering of different earth-toned solid panels all living in harmony together on the same rod. Perhaps the solid on solid is less in your face than a print + solid, but I do think the look is interesting.

I shared this image in my recent post about the sofa wrap-around bookcase, but it applies here, too. A design by Zoe Feldman, she butted two solids (again) in this gorgeous living room. It’s hard to tell whether one is slightly behind the other and acting more like a light-filtering sheer, but the concept still applies.

I wanted to show this photo because it feels very “real” and could be in anyone’s home, not just a high-end boutique or designed residence. These are two patterns put together to cover a large window, and it’s pretty charming. The interior is more of a sheer, while the outer curtain is a bit more room-darkening.

How beautiful is this?!? While probably not multiple curtains of different colors put together, the ombre effect is a cool reminder that we can have some fun with our window coverings, that’s for sure.

Curtain Solutions #2: Keep the Panels for “Decor,” Add Function With Romans

Okay, so here is another route I may go. While I know that my panels are still fairly narrow, I could train them and even add some width with a large tape or trim (keep reading), and just keep them stationary. In this manner, they’d serve less to cover the window, and more just as a visual element. The real work of letting light in or blocking it would happen with a Roman shade. Here’s what I worked up:

Admittedly, I LOVE the look of this, especially with the small check juxtaposing the large floral. The only problem here is that these are custom-made from Pepper Home and quite pricey for what I’d ever want to put into a rental property. I could probably make something like this, but as a reader suggested to me in a previous post about my moving: NO MORE PROJECTS. She’s right.

Curtain Solutions #3: Add Wide Trim to Edges

If you need just a little more width, you always have the option of sewing, ironing, or gluing on a wide tape/trim to the edges of your existing panels. That alone could buy you six inches on each panel, so a foot total. Not bad. Here’s an example:

This is likely a 2- or 3-inch trim, and if you fake it a little by adding it to the very edge of your existing fabric, you get more width, for sure. You can also do this on the bottom, as well, like this cutie cafe curtain:

The bonus of adding in trim is that the curtains feel very high-end designer! You can do this yourself fairly easily (easiest with iron-on fusing tape).

Seeing this made me come up with secret option #3 for me: Add in a neutral colored panel PLUS add in trim all around to help marry them better and make them feel intentional. That, my friend, is always the goal when doing something a little out of the box. Make it feel like you always intended on doing it, not like it’s a band-aid to an issue that arose.

I might not even need the bottom trim, truthfully. Just adding in the side trim on both the print and solid panels might be enough to make them feel like they belong together!

Now, I don’t have any lack in length here (in fact, I need to hem the panels here a bit), but that is the most common problem people come across when either buying second-hand drapes or moving. Remember that you can always try to let out the hem a bit, and you may find a few additional inches, but if that isn’t enough, here are two things I think look great and solve that issue without having to just buy all new curtains:

The long fringe look isn’t for every home, surely, but if you want to bring in some flair or intrigue, it’s a surefire way to accomplish that, even if just in one main room.

Curtain Solutions #5: Add a Block of Coordinating Fabric

This isn’t some big reveal, but it’s a good reminder that you can really transform your curtains (whether out of necessity or just desire) by adding in a block of fabric. To me, it works best when the line that is created with the new fabric relates to something in the room, such as a window sill height, for instance. Again, it’s all about intention!

One more note, if you’re going to DIY something like this, be sure to pick a fabric that’s of similar weight to the existing curtain. You can definitely get creative if you want, but if the top part is a light-filtering linen, pick something in that same class. The exemption is if you’re mixing fabrics such as cotton and velvet—go with the heavier fabric on the bottom.

I typically see a smaller solid section under a larger patterned fabric, but this flips that idea on its head, and it’s very fun. A great idea for anyone afraid of going full-on print. Kind of like a print amuse-bouche.

I hope it served either as inspiration for how to get creative with your window coverings, or as some kind of “ah-ha” moment balm to your drapery woes if you had them. Remember, don’t give up on something you love without trying to make it work first. There isn’t always a solution, but if you stretch your imagination of what’s “allowed” in our homes, you’re way more prone to finding one if there is.

Guest Cottage: What Are Doing With The Broken Vintage Windows And Doors??

Here’s what I know: Windows, doors, flooring, and tile are the things that I take pretty seriously. They are very important architectural elements, what makes or breaks a home long term (and are the most expensive to change or replace). This isn’t where I’ve ever taken big risks or gone cheap (well, maybe ’til now?), and the vintage windows and doors of the guest cottage are all busted, but charming as hell. They are original wood, single pane, from varying decades in the 1800s and early 1900s (depending on the room, it was added on to many times). So my plan was to take it case by case, to keep what we could, fix what we could, and replace what we needed. It would be an investment for sure. Fine. But as I started getting quotes, my “only high-quality doors and windows” mantra loosened. So here is what the plan is, room by room, door by door, window by window, and dollar by dollar.

Now, real quick: while this is super aesthetically important to me, Brian is more focused on not having janky doors and windows and keeping the warm air in and the hot air out. I get that, but I don’t want to spend $50k on new doors and windows when I love what they look like right now.

The Big Kitchen Window

The main kitchen window is huge, almost 74″ wide by 58″ tall. It’s a 4 over 3 grid pattern, fixed (does not open), single pane, true divided lite (meaning the glass is only between the wood and not like SDL – simulated divided lites – that is more common for contemporary, double paned, gridded patterns). It’s so pretty, but…

The glass is in bad shape with one broken pane, one cracked pane, and the rest so thin (and wavy) that they feel like they could be broken by a stray ping pong ball.

Here’s what happened: we first had the restoration company quote to fix the frame, replace the broken glass, and then add the storm window for added energy efficiency during the winters. That quote came in at $2,700 for just this one window, and we were really scared that we were going to spend almost $3k on something that would be so thin and be so cold in the winter. So this compelled us to get the quote to completely rebuild a brand new custom window (Marvin), hoping that it would be around the same cost, but for a brand new, likely better product.

So when the $5,520 quote for the new wood window came in, we responded with an immediate, “oof”. While I don’t think that it is overpriced, it is too much to spend on one window.

We then decided to fix the window, add thicker glass than it has now, and not do the storm window. I’m pushing for this more than Brian; he’s scared that it’s going to be super cold in the winter. But I have to remind him of the following:

The new glass, even though it’s single pane, will be much thicker than the vintage, thin single pane.
We had single pane glass in LA in our English Tudor house, and with the right temperature control, window treatments, and with our Quilt system, we’ll be fine. Single pane doesn’t always mean super drafty if it’s high quality and thicker glass.
Portland isn’t crazy hot or cold. We will have heat/ac in each room, and even on the hottest days, this room doesn’t get hot because by the time the sun hits this room, it’s behind trees. Some rooms are natural saunas (like the upstairs bedroom); this one isn’t.

FUN FACT: It’s actually a vertical window that they installed horizontally, which I guess was not atypical for the 1800s and is actually really charming (we didn’t know this until we were told by one of the restoration companies that pointed out the wider frame on one of the sides).

Decision: completely restore the original window, with new, thicker glass for $1800 – $2k.

The Living Room Interior Window

This was a harder decision. This window was charming in theory. They clearly added on to the room behind it later. It’s blocked by a chimney that we might remove at some point, but aren’t just yet, because it sets off a domino effect of problems to solve that we would like to put off. Once we found the reclaimed wood that matched the walls, we decided to salvage the window, frame out the hole, and clad it to match the walls. It will be a bit patchy, but there are patchy parts all over the walls, so we are just accepting the quirks. We think this wall might be good for a larger TV, so having the window gone is a good thing (and no, that hutch isn’t there anymore, it’s still in the living room where I debate every day whether I want it to stay or go, lol).

The Interior Doors

All the interior doors are so charming, if not a bit janky. Some of our subs will immediately say they need to be replaced, while others understand the charm. Here you can see a little bit of the door to the prop room (left), the speakeasy (center), and the door to upstairs (right). There is also the door from the speakeasy to the bathroom and various doors upstairs. They are all different in style – some paneled, some with windows, some with knobs really high, and some with knobs really low.

None of them really shut, close, and lock perfectly right now, and if we lived here full-time with our kids, I could see that being annoying, but for our purposes, these are pretty great. I could see us stripping, painting, fixing as needed, but right now it’s not something I’m even thinking about.

The Prop Room

This room has three windows, all wood-framed and all different. Two of them (seen here from the outside) are fine (not great, but fine). But the third one is so busted and off kilter that it is beyond repair (said even the restoration folks). So we are looking for a vintage fixed (or operable) window that would need to be bigger, so we don’t have to deal with more re-siding or matching the beadboard.

Here’s the jankiest one in question. I got a quote to build a new wood window for here, which the window guy suggested as an awning, as the other two are a slider and a double hung, so it would be a picture window that would open from the top. The quote for this was $3,270. That felt like too much to us, so I’ve been on the hunt for a vintage one to put here instead, with the hope that it would be under $500 (not including install).

As I’m writing this, I’m realizing that the interior window from the living room could likely fit here! They just salvaged it, and I’m not sure what shape it’s in (and to be fair, it’s just a picture window, so it’s so simple), but in the name of keeping anything original, I’m going to explore just putting it here. I was planning on going to Aurora next weekend to see if they have anything special (which they tend to). So we’ll see.

The Speakeasy

The speakeasy had two windows – a double hung on the east wall and a big non-operable grid window on the south wall. The double-hung one was broken. Now the function of this room is still TBD, but it’s leaning rec room. Charlie’s drum set, our ping pong table that is in the garage, and maybe where the tweens/teens can hang. We call it the speakeasy because it’s fun and dark. So we took out that broken window and decided to put in a door instead, which connects directly to our prop garage. The door will have a panel and then six lites (so mostly glass).

They already framed it out, and it actually brings a lot of natural light in. We didn’t want to add more windows because we want to have wall space for now for games (and to not spend money), but I was nervous about not having any light, so the door was our compromise and gives great access. This room will also have two huge skylights with blackout shades, BTW.

But What About The Big Window?

Here’s where you might be shocked…

We got rid of that window. Now, before you cry or yell, you should know that it looked out to a chain link fence, 3′ away, that was covered in shrubs with really tall trees, all on our neighbors’ property. So it was a fence view and didn’t bring in very much natural light. We figured skylights would help. Besides… we had plans for that window (keep reading).

The New Bathroom

On to the bathroom, where we got rid of this window as well. It also had a terrible view that we couldn’t control (dark, chain link fence covered in shrubs), but getting rid of it also allowed us to put the shower and vanity over here, so it opens up the function of the room more. This room will also get two skylights to bring in a ton of natural light and to highlight the awesome, vaulted ceilings.

When we framed the floor of the bathroom, we had to build it up 18″ (unless we wanted to pour a concrete slab, which we didn’t do for a myriad of reasons). Doing this actually raised the height of the bathroom floor to that of the speakeasy (win), but it also required us to fix a few things, like the exterior door. The original door was rough and just didn’t make sense to salvage. Instead, we are putting in the same six-lite exterior door as we are in the speakeasy and reframing it to sit level with the new floor. We’ll have to add some sort of step-up outside, too.

Those extra 18″ also made it so the window was oddly low (starting at my knees with the view below my eyeline). So we were just going to raise it, which at first I thought would be expensive, but y’all, re-framing is pretty affordable (a day’s work for two dudes). But THEN I HAD THE BEST IDEA…

That’s right. We are taking the big, old speakeasy window, restoring it, and installing it in the bathroom. It will be bigger, prettier, and make the exterior of the house look prettier, too!

While I have you on the topic of exterior…what do you think I should do about that upstairs window?

The Upstairs Windows

Right now, it’s shoved a bit awkwardly to the right because the bathroom and shower stall forced it to be there. But since we don’t need the bathroom up there, we could demo those stalls out and easily move the window over so it’s centered in the peak of the roof.

The case for moving it is clear – it would look better, more balanced, be almost centered over the kitchen window, and not be so shoved. The case for keeping it where it was originally placed is just that – sometimes vintage charm is awkward and odd, but it keeps a house from looking cookie-cutter or basic.

Now upstairs is pretty simple otherwise. We are repairing any panes that are broken or cracked, but keeping all windows the same. They are in good enough shape and don’t need to move, plus we like the vintage wood vibes.

Wait… But What About The Huge Sliding Barn Door???

Ok, a huge thanks to you. Some of you suggested that we do a door within a door so that the sliding door becomes almost a bit like a shutter. The rolling door will still function, but when you open it, you’ll see a separate door/window situation that you can access to get inside.

The current opening is 90″ by 90″. I got two quotes. The first quote was for a 36″ door with two side lites, like this:

I had asked for a dutch door for general adorableness, and wanted as much natural light as possible. The quote came back around $15k with the dutch door being $2,300 of that (so could be less without it). But that didn’t include install.

The second quote we tweaked to add more light (so less panel on the bottom, more of a 3/4 light door rather than a 1/2 light). This one came back at $13k, including install. Neither of them included painting or staining.

This is the benefit of getting more than one quote – you can get a clearer picture of what something really costs in today’s market, rather than thinking that one company is just really expensive. So then the question becomes, what are our options, and what do they cost?

Custom 90″ by 90″ wood door with side lites. 12 -16 week lead time. Between $13 to $15k.
Readymade doors, but smaller, 72″ wide by 80″ tall, French doors. I found a few different options ranging from $700 to $5k.

The only things that aren’t an option are that we want it paintable (or stainable), ideally to look like wood (or at least not look cheap), and with a lot of glass (not a solid door). We also want the reviews to be good. Oh, and ideally pre-hung because framers hate when you just order a door (framing doors is famously hard).

So we are taking a risk and going with this one. I read the reviews, and we think and hope that once it’s all painted out and styled, it will look good enough. Our framers are going to center it and build around it with some nice-looking trim work so that it looks like a more fully milled French door system. The inside surround will be covered with the matching wood paneling. It should be noted that doing this will ALSO cost money. Retrofitting something readymade might cause its own costs and create its own problems. But we are willing to take the risk to save that much money and time.

While mixing patterns on the same sofa, chair, bench, etc, isn’t new, it’s definitely taken on a new life. I feel like I’ve seen them pop up in almost every new house tour, and I love all of them. This is typically (if not almost always) a custom job, but hopefully, as it becomes more popular, major retailers will take the hint and give us some affordable options! But if you are a bit of a seamstress, a custom banquette cushion and back rest could be in your wheelhouse, like this one above. I love the unexpected pairing of fabric patterns, but also how both of them are darker and a little moody.

Slide 4 really seems to be the magic slide of sofa fabric mixing, huh?? Well, here’s another great example of mixing a pattern with a solid, except this time, the base is the solid color, and the seat has the pattern. You really can’t go wrong. But if you do want to mix multiple patterns, as a rule of thumb, vary the pattern scales and stay within your decided color palette.

I feel like this was a trend years ago, and here it is, seemingly coming back again…but chicer. I mean, if Heidi Caillier is doing it, it’s happening, and when done right looks beautiful. I love that she took the blue color of the solid cabinets and incorporated it into the pattern of the other cabinet set. It really adds a fun playfulness to the room! I do think the darker wood frame also helps to elevate it (you know, aside from all the other beautiful pieces in the space:)). If the frame were, say, white, I don’t think it would look as expensive.

Here’s another great example that’s a bit more on the traditional side. The wallpaper seems like it makes the room feel more open than having walls of solid wood (which is also beautiful but clearly a different vibe). Meta Coleman is another designer who is INCREDIBLE with color, pattern, and whimsy, so if you ever need inspo, she should be on the list.

Oh, indoor tablecloths are here, people. Maybe some of you never strayed, but most of the design world did until now. Also, as shown above, it’s not just for traditional-style homes. Any style, with the right pattern or color, can do a tablecloth. I love how you can instantly add color or pattern to your interiors, with little to no effort. Now, all of the examples here and from what I’ve seen, it’s round tables that are getting all dressed up. That doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t use one on your square or rectangular tables.

The Link Up: Em’s New Affordable Coverups, Arlyn’s Must-See Homeware Collection, And Great Sandals

Happy Sunday, and happy long Memorial weekend to those of you who are lucky enough to have the day off. Also, happy Eid to those who will be celebrating this upcoming week! This week, we announced our Velux room makeover winner, and we hope you’re as excited about it as we are. It’s truly one of the best parts of this job to get to help extremely deserving people create a home they love and feel safe in. Isn’t that what everyone wants and should have? We think so. This week’s house tour is SUCH a stunner. It’s the home of Cobie Smulders and Taran Killam, which is a new build cabin in British Columbia on a lake…so the dream. The staircase and fireplace are unreal, and every room is so thoughtfully designed. The designer described the style as “kind of a modern-mountain-chalet-meets-a-grandma’s-farmhouse-in-England.” Enjoy!

From Emily: Two super affordable coverups and a FANTASTIC summer strappy maxi dress. During the annual (and always a bit *oof)) 2026 swimsuit review I discovered Cupshe, which seems to specialize in suits that are good for curves (i.e., tummy flattening and support for boobs). The suits that I bought fit so well, especially the ones where you can select the cup size. They reached for a social partnership, and I tried on more of their resort wear, which isn’t something I typically have a good inventory of, and I really, really liked three of the pieces so much. The black and cream maxi dress was so drapey and flattering, for being so affordable. It has pockets, even! I wore my “cakes” here, but if you have a smaller chest, you really wouldn’t need to wear a bra (or you just wear it over your swimsuit). I don’t love strappy dresses on me, but this one had the straps hitting in a really flattering area.

This flowy coverup is awesome because it’s a pattern, but it’s not too loud and in a neutral color, I don’t feel like I’m drawing too much attention to myself (says the girl who likes a bright red suit). With the black halter suit underneath, it felt like a really easy poolside outfit to wear that had the perfect amount of cover-up.

This white button-up cover-up is super drapey and perfectly sized. It gives room in the arms and armpits and doesn’t hug anywhere, but is somehow still flattering and falls well (and it comes in other colors, if you are like me and white just means it’s about to be orange with my spray tan on it). Anyway, I was super impressed with how cute these were for the cost.

From Arlyn: I’m not really one for seasonal decoration, with the exception of Christmas and the occasional fall porch-scape, but I accidentally landed on the “Americana Edit” page of H&M Home and honestly, and surprisingly, I kind of love ALL OF IT! The little sardine plates and matching tablecloth are precious, the red bistro silverware is the best price I’ve seen for a set like this, and don’t even get me started on these wildly cute placemats with unique pocket detailing for flatware. So good, all of it, and makes me itch for summer except for all the heat and humidity, and mosquitoes.

From Mallory: You know how fancy dresses are so expensive, and then a lot of times you literally only end up wearing them once?? I’m at the age where there are weddings happening like every month, and I knew there had to be a better way to find cool wedding guest dresses that won’t break the bank. I had 3 weddings in the last month alone (one of which was a destination wedding in Puerto Rico), and I was STRUGGLING on what to wear – until my sister told me about Fashion Pass. Basically, it’s a clothing rental company like Rent the Runway or Nuuly, and I had heard of it before, but she swore that they have some really great wedding guest dress options, and she was not wrong!! My sister uses these rental companies monthly because she works in a corporate office, and finding stuff to wear can be difficult, but since I work from home, I’ve never thought the clothing rental thing was for me. Well, this was the best use case ever!! Their intro offer is $75 per month, and you get 5 items plus an accessory, and you can swap out items twice in one month. So I went to a wedding at the beginning of May and ordered this dress with this purse, and then the next week I went to Puerto Rico and swapped it for this dress with this purse. I was also able to snag this Farm Rio dress for the rehearsal dinner, along with this cover-up, this dress for walking around town, and more. That last dress I did end up purchasing because I loved it so much (you do end up getting a discount if you purchase it too, which is great). They also give you a bag with the printed return label on it, so returns are super easy, and then the new orders are generally at your door in like 2 days. I’ll probably put a pause on the membership after this month, but if you have a trip coming up or a special event where you want some fresh outfits without the price tag, I could not recommend this enough!

From Caitlin: Happy start of summer! I’ve been celebrating Delaware’s recent 90-degree heatwave by busting out my favorite leather sandals. I bought them last year, and while the cut did take a minute to adjust to – it just feels different from your standard flip flop! – they’re my go-to shoe for…everything. (Like, seriously, everything. I stacked a 15′ UHaul, drove said UHaul, and then unloaded the aforementioned UHaul while wearing THESE SANDALS. Not even closed-toe shoes! They’re that comfortable, now that they’ve molded to my feet.) I love the unexpected shape and that they’re constructed entirely from natural materials. They aren’t on sale this weekend, but they’re already a deal at $75. Highly recommend if you’re looking to update your sandal selection!

From Marlee: I have been wearing these shoes truly every day, and I’m not stopping anytime soon… they’re super comfortable and easy to wear with any outfit. Without fail, every time I wear them, somebody comments on how cute they are – they’re compliment magnets!! The colorway I have is full price, but there’s some other cute colors that are 35% off this weekend:)

From Gretchen: I know I’ve shared this genius product before, but I need to give it another shout-out. This behind-the-sofa table from IKEA will forever be a favorite of mine. I have four of these units–three sit behind my sofa and one I use as a side table, connecting with the other three to form an L shape. These tables are just SO affordable, have held up super well, are designed to look and work well pushed up against each other, and when wrapped behind a sofa, give off that 70s conversation pit vibe I just crave. Not to mention, they provide ample storage and table top space. But recently I realized just how much I value their versatility. I had a friend over, and we simply NEEDED to binge a show with our dinner, but had no place to set our meal in front of us (I ditched my coffee table for more floor space). So I grabbed two of these tables from behind my sofa and plopped them in front of us. They worked perfectly! Now I can add “TV tray” to their list of use-cases.

From Jess: This song, Boy in Red by Isaiah Rashad and SZA, has been on repeat for at least a week. His whole album is incredible, but this one has me hooked!

Weekend Packing: My Favorite Things To Wear Right Now

We are headed out on a quick weekend away (Ashland for the Shakespeare festival), which means…weekend packing. This summer we have two family road trips (both in California, strangely – one is family related) with a mix of cities and relaxed country (SF, Santa Cruz, Monterey, Carmel Valley, Tahoe, the Redwoods, a small dude ranch, etc). We are a “carry-on” family and try our best not to check anything (outside of winter trips that involve bulky snow clothes). In general, for family trips, packing light feels easy to us and just simplifies our lives. I mostly want to be comfortable, look like “me’ while yes, feeling kinda stylish.

Two Favorite Dresses

Pink Dress (available color) | Black Dress

I find that regardless of how warm it is, nights cool down enough to warrant something on my legs and arms, but why wear pants when you can wear a super drapey and flattering dress? The pink one I’ve had for years and leans slightly “tropical” but is also great for a city summer night (it comes in different fabrics – cotton, linen – but I much prefer the “satin modal” for the drapy-ness and zero need to steam or iron). It’s called the Lucy 4, and they make different colorways every season, and I love their new green one and just bought it because it reads even less tropical. The black linen dress is a shocking sleeper hit for me (I tend not to wear too much black because it doesn’t read that well on camera and it washes me out, but this dress is so special). I wore it 4 of the 8 nights in Mexico for dinner – and on the plane both ways. It was between 65-75 at night and offered the perfect amount of coverage without needing to layer over. Great for a city vacation, too. Linen and super, super drapey. Oh, and size WAY down, I’m wearing the XXS, and it’s still oversized.

Weekend Packing: Blousey And Breezy Tops

White Blouse | Blue Top (similar)

I like my blouses more loose and boxy, erring on bohemian over structured for vacation. Emerson Fry makes the best, and I can’t believe I don’t have any photos in my favorite one – the puff-sleeved Isla top. It’s always flattering, the patterns are fun and not too loud. Plus, it’s super airy and breathable (they also have a long-sleeve version). That blouse above is a different version, but it gives you an idea. The prints are always fantastic, and the cotton is super high quality and yet not too thick (easy to tuck, never too long, etc).

This breezy white shirt from Target has absolutely checked the box so many times. I’ve worn it a ton, both in Mexico on vacation and just around here this spring.

Linen Blouse | Camo Shorts | Shoes

I plan on bringing two classic white shirts that go with ANYTHING. This linen shirt is new to me and fantastic – the most perfect texture and drape, and I love the boy pocket. I tried the Quince one, and it was good for the price, but this J.Crew one is simply better. The camo shorts are awesome (size down) and so easy to wear. Y’all, the J.Crew one is on a huge sale, $70 right now.

This button-up is another really thin and breathable, but falls well (doesn’t tug or hug) and is easy to layer. It’s truly so lightweight and easy to wear in warmer climates if you want some coverage. The fabric is almost like a seersucker, so you don’t have to iron it. And yes, those linen pants will never miss a vacation with me again. So comfortable, cute, breathable, easy to throw on, flattering, and cute pockets. That belt bag is my favorite.

Striped Top

I find it hard to find a long sleeve that has the right weight – that isn’t too thick and hot (or hard to layer over) or too thin and shows everything underneath. I bought two of these in different colors and have worn them a lot. I love that it has a stripe but isn’t too thick and bold, just subtle. Notice the drop shoulder. Also, that photo cracks me up. It’s giving 90s Martha Stewart catalogue.

Weekend Packing: Favorite Jean Shorts

Agolde Parker Long Shorts | Shirt | Sandals

I have two shorts that I pack no matter what – these Agolde Parker shorts (sits nicely on the hips, flares out, perfect hem a bit oversized, so very comfortable) and the Gap bermudas (a bit of a stretch, so very comfortable, longer, great distressing). I have quite the denim shorts collection, but these two are the ones that I grab the most and are the most comfortable and cool. Also, I’ve been wearing the hell out of those sandals – they make any boring outfit (like the one above) so much more interesting. I wouldn’t wear them for an 8-hour city walk day, but I wore them most nights in Mexico for dinner.

Bermuda Denim Shorts

A 10/10 for denim comfort (stretchy, roomy but still flattering).

Weekend Packing: Two Easy-To-Layer Cardigans

Scarf | Sunglasses | Cardigan | Pants

I also struggle with cardigans as I am a bit bulkier up top, so I don’t love to wear really thin fitted ones. This one from Aritzia is awesome and roomy, but cropped and has thinner sleeves. I sized up to a Medium to be able to layer over easier, and yet it’s still thin enough that it can handle a jacket over it. Nothing flashy, but man, so easy to wear.

Sweater | Jeans | Belt | Bag | Sandals

The Quince navy cardigan is thicker, but great for nighttime, and really classic and chunky, but with such a great cut and high-quality knit. It’s perfect for those 60-degree nights instead of a jacket. It reminds me of Jenny Kayne’s knitwear, but 1/8th the cost.

Weekend Packing: Comfortable Pants

Sunglasses | Sweatshirt | Pants | Shoes

These cargo pants are fantastic. They are on the thinner side, so really great for warmer weather, but they aren’t cheap and flimsy. They have great structure even after washing (and versatile – cool around town but also easy to hike in). You can tie the bottom or not. They are low-waisted and sit so easily on the hips. 10/10. I love that Gap sweatshirt, BTW, it has the most perfect wash and retro 70s fit. And those are my favorite sunglasses that I have 4 pairs of because they are polarized, so lightweight, and stay on your face really easily (and under $40).

These are fantastic for casual anytime wear pants. So comfortable, flattering, great pockets, etc. I bought them in the lighter stripe as well.

Lastly, if I were to bring jeans, I’d choose between these two:

Quince black Washed denim Bella Crop: These are already heavy in rotation and are super comfortable and cool. They have enough stretch in them to be all-day jeans. If you want to splurge, these Mother jeans are fantastic. Also stretchy with that perfect hem and stitching at the ankle. These are the only two pairs of jeans I would attempt to bring on a casual vacation.

One of my favorite pull-on pants EVER just came back in stock in a new colorway. I don’t have a professional shot of me wearing them, but these are perfect weekend/vacation pants that are a little splurgier than the above, but Emerson Fry does everything so well that they’ll last for years.

Weekend Packing: Comfortable Shoes

Now this is where I can get greedy and bring too many, but it’s so important to have the right shoe. This is very trip-dependent, obviously.

The huarches and the mules (below) are probably redundant – both easy to dress up and down, both neutral, both super comfortable. But also both are very small to pack, so easy to bring them.

For sneakers, I’ve been wearing my cobalt Nike Pacificas, and I just bought them in a maroon leather and the darker green for days where I want them to blend in more. Cute for city walking + good enough for 2-3 mile hikes with the kids.

I will also bring my Tkees flip flops and my Nike slides. If I want to bring any heels its likely a cushy platform from Korkease. My mules are no longer on sale, but I want THESE so bad and might get. And again, the leopard-strapped birks from Kelsey Dagger are a nighttime go-to that is casual but still really stylish.

Weekend Packing: New Linen Jacket

Linen Jacket | Long Sleeve T-Shirt | Jean Shorts | Shoes

I’ve worn this outfit so many times. Same long sleeve t-shirt, same shorts, but this linen jacket dresses it up a bit, and the color is perfect (just really complements most of what I have and breaks up the blue). Of course, now I want to pack those ballet flats, too! I’m in the market for a chore jacket (I have my eye on this one). I bought this denim one from Quince, and it’s AWESOME, but it’s a bit thick and stiff for summer wear, and I’d rather wear a canvas version.

Now, to be clear, I fully overpacked for two nights in Ashland (thus the trap of a car trip). Have a fantastic Memorial Day weekend, folks. Summer is here

Our Hacks For Summer Entertaining For A Large Group

Martha Stewart might not be impressed with my hosting skills, but I promise she would have a good time. You know how Thanksgiving hosts have systems, spreadsheets, and schedules? Well, now I get it. Three springs ago, when we were about to have our first 20-30 family gathering (a school event), Brian and I were both scrambling and sweating for 18 hours straight. It was fun, but we didn’t have any of it. And while that’s an extreme amount of people, the systems that we have since come up have made it so easy, and they work for gatherings of all sizes (with modifications, of course). It’s still work, but not stress. We are both able to have fun, and the cleanup the next day is actually very doable. This is important for summer entertaining! I’m a Virgo, enneogram 7 – organized, systemic fun is my favorite, and I look forward to all our gatherings now.

For context, we throw 15-18 outdoor gatherings a year (spring, summer, fall). We have 3-4 very large fundraisers (people buy tickets, school gets the money, we throw the party), many 6+ family gatherings of our closest friends (30-40 ppl), and then, of course, the smaller ones with just my extended family (20 people) or smaller groups of friends/kids. ALL of them are casual, we don’t hire help for any of them, and err on the side of “easy” over “perfect”.

I like everything I buy to look nice, sure, but I mostly want people to have a good time, and I find that most people in Portland like things to feel casual, relaxed, and warm. People come for the company and the fun, but that doesn’t mean it can’t look nice and go smoothly.

My General Large Outdoor Party Tips:

Burgers are best for smaller groups (under 30), not big ones. Trust me. If you want them to taste good, it’s a lot more work prepping, slicing, shredding, cooking, and cleaning. Someone has to really be on grill duty, and you can only do so many at a time. It’s a never-ending job, and a cold burger doesn’t taste that good. Of course, it’s doable, but we don’t anymore. Same with a taco bar, BTW. Sounds easy, but so much more prep and cleanup for large groups.
For our larger fundraisers with 60-100 people, where they bought “tickets,” we either order drop-off catering (Qdoba – an awesome taco/burrito bowl bar) or order pizzas. We don’t attempt to feed that many families on our own. The theme of these events is usually “Pig’s birthday party” or a “Family play date,” so it’s more about the yard, animals, pickleball, and gathering as a neighborhood, rather than a course-out meal. We have crafting tables and yard games. For our adults-only pickleball party, we do a huge make-yourself sandwich bar, mostly from Costco, and leave it out on the kitchen counter.
For 6-8 families, we do potlucks every time. We provide the main dish and salad (see below), and a dish or two, then we assign the rest. And yes, people like to be assigned (know your friends and assign accordingly, some people excel at cheese plates, others at buying pre-made potato salad). Everybody brings drinks. After a few potlucks where the food was redundant and we didn’t have enough of one dish, I asked my friends sheepishly if I could assign specific dishes, and everyone was so relieved and thanked me for taking away their “guessing stress”. A quick, “Are you cool if I just assign dishes to make it easier?” usually is all you need to say.
Avoid single portions snacks bags, juice boxes, and canned sodas, or you will be cleaning wrappers and 1/2 drunk cans all over your yard for days. We buy bulk goldfish, chips, pretzels, etc., and dump them in huge wooden bowls. We also pre-mix lemonade in huge plastic pitchers for kids and don’t provide canned sodas (unless it’s a smaller group). Kids never finish a soda from a can. Don’t do it for a group this size.

So that’s some blanket party tips we learned from mistakes we’ve made, but let’s get into how we do it so it’s actually smooth.

What Do We Actually Cook For Big BBQs?

Our Go-To Menu For 30-50 People:

Pre-marinated Skewers (store-bought) or, if we have the time, we love overnight marinated flank steak, chicken breast, and sausages (sliced and plattered so people can have a bit of each). Hot dogs for the kids are frequent (but recently I’m avoiding due to nitrates, sorry). While I love grilled veggies, for 30-50 people, it’s too much to prep, and the timing gets tricky on the grill with the meat, so we keep it simple.
Boiled corn (not on the grill, as to compete with meat grilling time) and usually in a massive pot, so you can do it earlier. Cut into 1/2 or even 1/3rds. No corn holders, people can use their fingers.
Canned baked beans dumped into a pot – Brian’s favorite. (The corn and beans are why we put two burners in our outdoor kitchen – we cook them both there, but can do so on the grill, or you could buy a two-burner electric cooktop if you are going to cook these frequently outdoors).
HUGE green salad – I prep earlier in the day, shove it in the fridge, and wait to toss til right before eating.

Friends usually bring chips, store-bought potato salad, dips, desserts, charcuterie, baked mac and cheese, or another veggie side. They all bring fun stuff to drink.

Tips And Products So It Looks Good And Goes Smoothly

Choose a neutral color palette that lets food pop and keeps everything looking a bit more curated (less messy looking). I bought mostly white melamine platters, wood bowls, with some green mixed in, which works easily in our yard, and the food looks pretty on white. Stay away from themed dishware. If you are throwing a 4th of July party, get red/blue paper napkins or plates, but keep all your serving materials neutral so they can work for all occasions.

Opt for Lightweight, stackable everything – platters, serving bowls, dipping bowls, and even cups (although just realized some of our cups aren’t!). This is for easy transport back in to do the dishes and easy storage since it’s seasonal. **Y’all, I bought most of these platters a couple of years ago before I learned about micro-plastics, but it seems that, unless under high heat, melamine doesn’t leach micros like other plastic platters. Other great options are wood or enamel (like camping dishes), or using ceramic outside (which is just a lot more labor for large groups).

If I were buying now (or when I need to buy more), I’d get these simple metal platters, four for $38. Stacking, unbreakable, cute, and easier to clean than wood, but no micro-plastics. Speaking of…

No glass or ceramics outside. I’m done cleaning up broken glass outside near children – so many have broken (platters get dropped, wine glasses fall on stone, and carrying them all into the kitchen is so labor intensive). Beer drinkers still like classic red keg cups (we have a keg), but I put out our cute reusable cups for cocktails and wine (see below), and kids usually get cheap Dixie cup-style since they will leave their cups all over the yard, and no one knows whose is whose.

Wine Glass | Water Glass | Fly Fans | Flatware | Wood Caddy (similar)

Avoid doing dishes for huge groups (duh). I have a lot of landfill guilt, so we use compostable paper plates most of the time (Oregon has a great compost program), which are admittedly expensive. For under 20 people, I’m fine eating on melamine dinner plates and doing the dishes, but adding that on top of all the platters and serving-ware stops making sense for larger groups (we did it and regretted it). We avoid plastic silverware because I hate eating with it, don’t want it in a landfill, and it has microplastics, so I bought that super affordable wood and metal picnic-style flatware in bulk that I LOVE (and yes, we wash in the dishwasher and it lives in the caddy).

NEW HACK!!! If you are mostly doing burgers, dogs, sandwiches, or finger foods, then using fast food lunch baskets with a liner is SUCH A good hack. We are going to use these for our kids this summer (we host a lot of kids over here in a few summer camps run by a local teen). So only the liner needs to get thrown away, but no dishes need to be washed, less waste, and less expensive than compostable. I’m buying these because they have enough of a flat bottom surface that could handle chicken/salad meals as well, and then we can reduce our waste even more. This might be my new summer BBQ protocol, so stay tuned!

Hot Tip: Wet food (potato salad, green salad, grilled veggies) goes in or on melamine or metal bowls and platters, but dry food (snacks) can go in wood. It’s just easier to clean (and I like the visual mix).

Drinks! Get That Hydration Station!

This is by far the biggest pain point that I had to solve – everyone always running out of drinks, cups everywhere, kids begging for water, etc.

So we use this bar cart and leave it here, with usually 2 huge cold liquid dispensers – one for water, and one for lemonade. Then, in the plastic pitchers, we can either mix up another kid drink or do pre-mixed margaritas or cocktails. It took me so long to find a drink dispenser that held more than a gallon that wasn’t bright yellow or orange, so I was SO excited when I found these 5-gallon Stanleys on Amazon. I bought two and put them on black plant risers (the only thing that I need to figure out is how to label them, I used stickers and they became gross – so I’m going to buy some hanging cute chalkboard tags and maybe use a command strip hook?). Underneath, we keep N/A seltzer drinks for adults who don’t want to imbibe.

It took me a while to find the pitcher that wasn’t hideous, tiny, had a lid, but was unbreakable. These are pretty great (but heavy for smaller kids under the age of 8, FYI). The drink dispensers really are where it’s at. We do Crystal Light when I can find it in bulk, but mostly Country Time lemonade (and water). The green rubber tub is from IKEA. The acrylic glasses are my favorite, and I have them in three sizes -large water glasses, smaller cocktails, or a stemmed version. They look like glass and are easy to wash in the dishwasher, but won’t break outside.

My only regret with my RTA outdoor kitchen design is not putting the wine cooler closer to this side of the counter, near the Keg. When people sit on the stools, it makes it hard to reach the wine from the outside. So we usually use this for ice and backup wine, but then keep a bucket or cooler of wine on the floor near the hydration station.

Now, the day we shot, my new blue plaid tablecloth was still in the wash, so I threw these two smaller ones on and really liked how they looked, but I usually love mixing patterns on all our tables. I bought this one from Target, but I also love this one from Wayfair.

Game Changers: Fly Fans + Rechargeable Lamps + Tongs

In years past, we had these big netted domes to keep bees and flies off food, but they are annoying as people have to take them off to get to the food, and no one knows where to put them, etc. We still have some just in case, but right now we are loving these fly fans. I bought these that look like faux wood, and they are on the more expensive side, but I like how they look, obviously. These are battery-operated (I wish they were rechargeable), but so far they’ve lasted through four gatherings (so around 10-12 hours) and are still going strong, so maybe battery is actually better.

They obviously don’t hurt when you accidentally lean into them or when a kid touches them.

Fly Fan

This year, I also bought two different types of gold tongs, which make serving yourself while holding your plate so much easier. I bought normal tongs for meat, and then the two-handled serving tongs for salads.

No more two-handed salad servers to deal with, and I love how everything matches (and was so cheap).

No more candles, rechargeable lamps FTW. I have a pretty solid collection of rechargeable outdoor lamps now that I LOVE. It takes work to collect them all and keep them charged, but if you entertain outside a lot, it’s worth the investment because the ambience is so much better and it’s far less messy (or dangerous) than candles. We put them on all tables, and have some that are solar (like these) that turn on automatically when the sun goes down.

Lastly, don’t sleep on shatterproof string lights – they are such night-time game changers for ambience. My rule is match the string cord to your house color if it’s going inside a covered area (like our string lights on our back patio and outdoor kitchen – both white), but if it’s out in a yard, then a black cord goes away so much more and mixes in with the dark green of any trees or the dark sky. And I like a casual drape, don’t worry about making them perfectly tot. We have them lined along our split rail fence around the pool area, and I want to add them along the animal fence line this summer.

Games And Fire

Listen, we have a lot to do here, so admittedly, we don’t feel the need to keep adding to our game repertoire. Cornhole is the overwhelming winner every single time, but I recently bought Skittle Scatter because the kids love it on camping trips. And we believe in solo stoves a lot

Quick Answers To Questions I Get All The Time

Where does everyone go to the bathroom? Everyone uses the powder bath near the mudroom, and it’s been totally fine (I’ll still use my bathroom). I would imagine a lot of dudes go outside. There has never been a line or any sort of backup, but I am excited to offer a more outdoor-oriented bathroom in the guest cottage.

How do you deal with the mess afterward? The cleanup is usually very doable because the entire mess is outside. We have to wash all the platters, acrylic glasses, etc., but that’s usually inside, and the kids clean up the yard. It’s still 2-3 hours of work, but inside parties are SO much more work, and the clean-up is way more intense.

Do you have the pool uncovered and available for every gathering? We only allow use of the pool when our close friends are over, and the parents know to watch the kids (and most of the kids are closer to tweens now, thank god). But no, we leave it closed for all school events when toddlers might be here. And we have trampoline rules as well. Most of the time, we make the kids do anything else, and they end up playing Ghost in the Graveyard for HOURS. There is enough to do, so everyone is fine

We realized it had been A WHILE since we did a proper “best wallpaper” update, so we are fixing that today. We combed through and deleted companies no longer in business, added some new favorites, and updated each and every brand graphic with new selections! We are big wallpaper believers, so if you are contemplating adding some to your home, we hope this post is a huge help.

Wallpaper can be daunting to shop for, commit to, and hang. But when you do it correctly, it really MAKES a room. It not only provides a big pattern that creates impact, but it actually makes the rest of the room easier to design because you have a pattern, color, motif, or design that leads the rest of the room. A few years back we scoured the internet pulling together some of our favorite sources (both the ones that we use time and time again and a few that were new to us), but with some of the patterns being discontinued, some new ones being introduced to the market, and so many new artisans creating beautiful prints that we love, we figured it was time to update the roundup and highlight some of our favorites in a massive roundup. So, folks, here are 354 of our favorite and wallpaper patterns in alphabetical order. Just what you needed for a Wednesday morning pick me up.

Best Wallpaper: Abnormals Anonymous

These guys are exactly what they say they are: a little bit abnormal and a little bit amazing. I hung quite a handful of these in our old office for our opening party, and everyone couldn’t get enough of them. They have reintroduced a lot of the classics in some more muted colors, and I love the playful aspect of them.

Best Wallpaper: Aimee Wilder

This has been one of my favorite sources for fun, fresh, and playful patterns. They all come in a variety of color ways, and I loved her Shadowcat pattern so much that I used it in the Cattery project I did a few years back. Looking back on that project is so much fun, and I am still very into the pattern of the paper.

Best Wallpaper: Anthropologie

It might not be a secret to you, but if it is…here is my big secret – Anthropologie sells wallpaper, and their patterns are SO good. They really pick the creme de la creme of patterns and designers to sell online in a really curated collection. Their patterns rotate with each season, so if you find something you love, snag it up before it’s gone. They don’t sell in-store, but some of the stores do use them in some of their installations.

Best Wallpaper: Backdrop

While we haven’t used these yet, Backdrop has been coming out with incredible and original prints. Modern but whimsical! Aside from their own designs, they also carry other brands.

Best Wallpaper: Beata Heuman

I am a HUGE Beata Heuman, so it’s no surprise that I love her wallpapers. This is her whole selection, but it’s a pretty beautiful one if you are looking for great wallpaper.

Best Wallpaper: Bien Fait

These guys are not for the faint of heart. I used their Animal pattern in Charlie’s nursery in our old house, and although I love our home now, I do miss that beautiful wallpaper so much. Their patterns are all custom-made for your room so that their murals fit the space perfectly and really feel like they are made for the room (which they are).

Best Wallpaper: Chasing Paper

These guys make GOOD peel-and-stick wallpaper in such great patterns (but also offer traditional wallpaper too!). Arlyn used the Cosmo Block Print in her last rental kitchen (she says it came off so easily when they moved out). They have so many wonderful prints and do really amazing collaborations with designers and artists.

Best Wallpaper: Cole & Son

Fruit, Trees, Poppies, Fish, and Parrots… these guys have it all, and I love their saturated but not crazy prints. Their patterns are classics and feel painstakingly hand-drawn by artists. Caitlin used their Flamenco Fan in her dining room and Orange Blossom in her kitchen! They look so incredible and really elevated those spaces in such a whimsical way.

Best Wallpaper: Eskayel

These guys have a lot of tribal and watercolor-inspired prints, which, if that’s your thing, would be perfect to add to any of your walls.

Best Wallpaper: Farrow & Ball

Farrow & Ball has long been the king of the best paint colors, but they also carry wallpaper, and my, it is beautiful. They are all printed using Farrow & Ball’s own paint, giving them a stunning, slight texture. They do lean more to the traditional side, but I love some of their prints so much. I have used quite a few of them in my Los Feliz house, and they made every room they were installed in feel so special (and also so much easier to design).

Best Wallpapers: Finest Wallpaper

Artful and fun patterns in a variety of color ways. Some of theirs are pretty busy, so they might not be the best for the bedroom, but man, I could be very into using #1 in a smaller space like a powder room.

Best Wallpaper: Graham & Brown

These guys have a little bit of everything to suit anyone’s taste levels, and generally, the prices are affordable.

Best Wallpaper: Hygge & West

Hygee & West carries some of my favorite patterns that I seem to go to for inspiration each time I need a new wallpaper for a project. They have a range of styles from old world, to modern traditional, to a little bit kitchy. I love all their stuff.

Best Wallpaper: Jill Malek

You have heard me say it before, but I love designing nurseries and playrooms, and I could be completely satisfied with so many of their prints in any and all nurseries/playrooms that I design. They are fun, fresh, and totally modern in a way that will stay current for years to come.

Best Wallpaper: Joss & Main

Yep, one of your favorite online retailers also carries wallpaper now. They have a large selection that you might have to dig through, but we did find some really good ones.

Best Wallpaper: Kelly Ventura

I came across Kelly Venutra’s work in the last couple of years and love her delicate florals so much. I used Meadow in our guest bath and Thicket in Kaitlin’s primary bedroom. Can’t recommend them more!

Best Wallpaper: Kelly Wearstler

What doesn’t Kelly do? First interiors, then chocolate, and now beautiful wallpapers. The prices aren’t for the faint of heart, but these patterns are worth every penny.

Best Wallpaper: Lulu And Georgia

Another one of our favorite online retailers has some fun and fresh wallpapers that will give life to any room. The selection they have, along with their collaborations (like Sarah Sherman Samuel, Heidi Callier, and Jake Arnold, to name a few), is one of our favorites.

Best Wallpaper: Makelike

Blue flowers, green playful toile, and anything else that your little Alice in Wonderland Heart could desire. They have a fun mix of botanicals, modern graphic prints, and well, mushrooms if that is your sorta thing.

Best Wallpaper: Milton & King

These guys are an Australian brand and have so many fun and fresh patterns. They aren’t inexpensive, but wow are they pretty:)

Best Wallpaper: Mini Moderns

Anyone who has a wallpaper print with vintage midcentury modern chair silhouettes is bound to be on my roundup of the best wallpapers online. They have some very fun, playful prints to feast your eyes on.

Best Wallpaper: Miss Print

They have got some fun and crazy patterns that would be great to add some serious drama to any room. The saturated colors and bright patterns might not be for everyone (or every room), but for the right space, they could really make it special.

Best Wallpaper: Paper Mills

These guys take abstract wallpapers to a whole new level. Some of their prints even look like they have been block printed, so it really makes your walls look custom and much better than any old, bland beige paint that you could slap on.

Best Wallpaper: Porter Teleo

Their wallpapers will take your room to a whole different level. Each pattern is designed after hand-painted pieces, which means your room will look as if the most skilled artisan came in and transformed your room.

Best Wallpaper: Rebecca Atwood

I’ve been a fan of Rebecca Atwood for YEARS! I’ve used her fabrics for years, but I also put the Dashes wallpaper in the Portland Project’s powder bath. The quality is incredible, and she is also wonderful.

Best Wallpaper: Rebel Walls

I originally stumbled into these guys when I was sourcing tree mural wallpaper for Elliot’s old room (yes, I know she has had tree mural wallpaper in both rooms) and fell in love with so many of their prints. Some of them are a bit wild and bright, but they do have a great selection, and the tree mural that I used could not have been more perfect for Elliot’s first nursery. I also used the High Seas mural in our LA kids’ playroom, and Jess used their Chinoiserie Chic mural for her friend’s bedroom.

Best Wallpaper: Rifle Paper Co.

You might be familiar with their stationery, but these guys make some pretty joy-inducing wallpaper patterns as well. They come in peel-and-stick, too!

Best Wallpaper: Rocky Mountain Decals

Haven’t tried these guys out in person, but they do have some pretty cute temporary wallpaper options. We chose very neutral options here, but they have a ton of colorful options too!

Best Wallpaper: Sandberg

The wallpaper company of my Scandi dreams:) I love their designs so much, and the famous Raphaël is in my entryway – a quiet neutral that has so much beautiful movement.

Best Wallpaper: Serena & Lily

We are long-time fans of everything Serena & Lily does, and their wallpapers are no exception. I love some of the simpler and subdued patterns like #5 and #8.

Best Wallpaper: Sian Zeng

Found this company when designing Elliot’s nursery and fell in love with their prints and patterns. I used #1 in Elliot’s bedroom because who doesn’t need a pink tree mural in their room? I cannot say enough good things about the details, quality, and coloring of their stuff.

Best Wallpaper: Spoonflower

I have been working with Spoonflower for a few years now and truly love their product. I used #1 in the upstairs laundry closet, and I did it myself (and with Gretchen:)). Most, if not all, of their papers come in eight different types, like peel-and-stick, pre-pasted, grasscloth, etc. They have it all.

Best Wallpaper: Studio Printworks

They have got some very off-the-wall patterns and narrative murals that are bound to make your friends, and your walls talk (literally), and if that is not your thing, then you can find some beautiful geometrics and florals in their shop as well.

Best Wallpaper: Tempaper

A true staple in the temporary wallpaper game! They have just introduced so many new patterns to their lineup over the years that are so beautiful.

Best Wallpaper: Thatcher (Formerly Juju Papers)

Thatcher (formerly Juju wallpapers) is local to Portland, and we all know how much I love a small business, especially a small business in Portland that puts out some lovely patterns for your walls.

Best Wallpaper: Trustworth

These guys make reproductions of some of the most beautiful antique prints. That Alice in Wonderland print is beyond words; it makes me so happy.

Best Wallpaper: Urban Outfitters

Urban Outfitters has been expanding their home collection and introducing some very good items into it, including these wallpapers. As with Urban Outfitters, a lot of them are retro, playful, and vintage-inspired.

Best Wallpaper: Walnut Wallpaper

These guys have an extensive collection of prints, botanicals, and geometrics in a huge variety of colorways. They also have a handful of designer collections that are tailored to suit every style.

Best Wallpaper: West Elm

Another major retailer that carries great wallpaper. I don’t think any of the stores have these in person for you to see, but from what we found online, it does look like they have some good ones. Most of these are from the Pierce & Ward collab, which we still can’t get enough of. West Elm also sells a lot of wallpapers from Tempaper and Chasing Paper.
