Interior Style: Stefano Pilati

Ask fashion designer Stefano Pilati why he chose his apartment in Paris, and the creative director of Italian menswear brand Ermenegildo Zegna explains it was because of his white boxer, Bepi. While friends warned that the puppy, now 12 years old, would rip apart furniture, pilati was more concerned with the practicalities of having to walk him several times a day. His solution? Find a place with a private garden where Bepi could roam.

Pilati thinks his apartment's most exceptional work is the shelving system commissioned from furniture designer Martino Gamper. A sculptural assemblage of polished and lacquered wood boxes, it frames the opening to a rectangular space that was the original master bath and is now the funmoir, or smoking room. There, Pilati reveals, many chic garment has been born. "Before I go to sleep, I sit down, have a cigarette, and draw."

"Everything is coordinated around my way of living", asserts Pilati, who has a penchant for combining wildly disparate objects; the television room, for example, contains a chaste Louis XVI desk bearing a lamp made from a zebra leg.

The dining room's mural of an autumn woodland, painted by Mathias Kiss and Olivier Piel, would not look out of place in a Roman palazzo, though its inspiration was actually a scene from THE Reese Witherspoon movie Vanity Fair. But Pilati asked the decorative artists to leave the landscap unfinished, because "I didn't want it to seem too retro or old-school"

This week's edition of NET-A-PORTER's digital magazine under Editor-in-Chief Lucy Yeomans features the unique British model Karen Elson as she talks to friend, stylist and show designer Tabitha Simmons about her love for fashion, music and being a mother.

Karen Elson and Tabitha Simmons met in Tokyo when Elson was 16 and have remained friends ever since. "We didn't see each other for a year after Tokyo. Then I moved to New York and we bumped into each other at a restaurant. You would come over to my house and we would tay up late. Your shoe obsession was growing. You had those amazing Christian Dior boots. This was my fashion college, you know? Travelling the world, having you as a friend" Simmons recalls, "we would go to the deli and you would be decked you in Chanel!" Elson chimes in; "I didn't have anything else to wear! I had done the Chanel campaign, and Karl took me to the shop to get a ton of clothes. Those were the only nice clothes I had because I couldn't afford anything"

Born in the north of England, Elson has lived in Nashville since 2006. "I left home at 16 and travelled and lived in so many different places, so when I had my daughter, Scarlett, at 26, and put my feet down in Nashville, it was a shock." On life in Nashville Elson says; "they don't sugar-coat it, and that's what i like about it. If I wetn home and put on my airs and graces, they would bat me down in a heartbeat. It is the same in Nashville. So I can be me here and not 'Karen The Model'. When I go to New York or Europe, I am working and I can enjoy it. But it's not my 24/7 life"

When Simmons askes what the fashion world means to Elson now, she replies; "it means so much to me honestly. Being in fashion, knowing so many fascinating people has been such a big part of my life. From the outside, people tend to view fashion as a terrible thing, but it isn't. Fashion has changed my life for the better. I love it. I'm interested in the whole process". Elson reflects on her favourite fashion memory; "shooting with Steven Meisel for the cover of Italian Vogue in 1997, it was on my 18th birthday." Simmons intercepts; "was that the time they shaved off your eyebrows?" With Elson responding; "Yes, and they dyed my hair - it was the best birthday present ever!"

On leaving the glamour behind and being at home Elson says; "I enjoy working as a model because I have this other life with my children, and it's very real: I was up at 6:30am this morning: making Henry and Scarlett's lunches. It just puts you in your place instantly." And combining her fashion career with music? "I'm both. How many musicians have their photograph taken? How many actors have a clothing line? It's the world right now. In my opinion if you are trying to do that you are doing it for the right reason, why not. If you are your best, it is what it is."

And being a mum? "The most important thing is being a mum. Oh, absolutely."

I'm an Australian girl through and through and as much as I love our amazing country I also love travelling. There is nothing more exciting than walking out of an airport, suitcase in hand and into a foreign (or even a not-so-foreign) land. Europe has always fascinated me. From my days backpacking as a student exploring the cities I'd longed to visit for the very first time, to now walking those familiar streets of my favourite cities, I take so much inspiration form visiting each time with new eyes.

This past week I've been in London and it seems almost criminal not to make the most of the exotic temptations of its nearby European neighbours.

Last Friday one of my oldest and dearest friends and I jumped on the Eurostar for a relaxing weekend away. There is something oddly calming packing a weekend bag, jumping on the train, headphones on with a great playlist and watching the city disappear into the English countryside then transitioning to the paddocks and yellow daffodil fields of France. And then, of course, finally arriving in the fashion (and love) capital of the world: Paris.

So our plan? Shopping, eating, exploring, sitting in cafes watching the world go by and shopping. (Or did I mention that already?)

We have done this trip a few times together and now have our favourite spots to visit so I thought for this week's Spy Style post I would share my tips for two days int his wonderful city.

SHOP

Le Marais - A beautiful area to wander and explore the smalls stores and boutiques. A must visit is Merci-Merci, a concept store housing three levels of fashion, interiors, cafes and a restaurant. 111boulevard Beaumarchais.

Rue Saint-Honoré - The gorgeous little hotel we stayed in was on this strip so this was our stomping ground. It's home to incredible luxury boutiques: Balenciaga, Maison Goyard, Louis Vuitton, Tom Ford, Chanel and also some favoured French high-street stores such as Sandro and Maje. And not to be forgotten - Colette. A favourite of mine (and Karl Lagerfeld's. He visits weekly) is located at 213 rue Saint-Honoré.

Saint-Germain-des-Prés - Eat and shop, shop and eat. Packed with some of the most famous French cafes and stores including the designer-filled department store Le Bon Marché, you can get lost in this beautiful area in the 6th arrondissement.

Boulevard Haussmann - For more luxury department stores... Le Printemps, 64 boulevard Haussmann, and Les Galeries Lafayette, number 40. Everything you have to have (but never realised it before).

Marché aux Puces St-Ouen de Clignancourt - This huge antique/ flea market, just north of the 18th arrondissement, has been operating in some form for hundreds of years. Stunning antique furniture in great conditions and also vintage designer jewellery, clothes and bags can be found here. Opens around 10:30am. Keep your belongings safe - it's an area known for pickpockets.

EAT

Brasserie Lipp – 151 boulevard Saint-Germain.

Chez Georges – 1 rue du Mail.

Kei – 5 rue Coq Héron. Great for dinner but you will need to book.

RECHARGE

Café Coutume – 47 rue de Babylone.

Café Marly – 93 rue de Rivoli. Overlooking the Louvre.

Café de Flore – 172 boulevard Saint-Germain. A favourite haunt of Hemingway, Henry Miller and Picasso.

Angelina – 226 rue de Rivoli. If there was a heaven made of chocolately goodness, this is it. For the most incredible sweet experience this cannot be beaten. You may have to queue but it is worth the wait. The best hot chocolate (heaped with cream) that I have ever consumed.

STAY:

Hôtel Costes – 239 rue Saint-Honoré. Hotel, music, restaurant, bar, perfumes and magnificent roses.

Le Relais – 308 rue Saint-Honoré. Sweet French boutique hotel almost across the road from Colette.

Hire a bike – If the weather is on your side forget public transport. Get some wheels and explore the beauty of this city. It really is the best way to experience Paris.

Le Crazy Horse – Dita Von Teese has performed here; Christian Louboutin was guest creator last year and it attracts a host of international guests. As far as burlesque goes, I’ll admit I haven’t seen that much but this was pretty amazing. Definitely worth seeing and having this truly French experience.

Hamman – 39 rue Geoffroy-Saint-Hilaire. Great if you are a fan of a traditional bath house and want a break from it all.

I'll admit this list is quite long and to do it all would need more than two days, however, there are many options, especially if you want to also take in the museums, monuments and famous landmarks (of which I've mentioned none!). Rain, hail or shine, this should keep you busy and well-fed with shopping bags galore.

I can't count the amount of times I've been asked the question "Can you wear navy and black together?" And I'm happy to reply.....yes yes YES!!!

I ADORE this combination. In fact, right at this very moment it's my favourite colour combo. I can't get enough navy in my life and black is, well a wardrobe essential. Timeless, understated and classic. But pairing it back with navy? Sheer brillance.

A few weeks ago I attended the Financial Review Bespoke conference at the Opera House. The day was filled with presenters each leaders in their fields talking about their businesses and careers. One of the most impressive speakers of the day was Jeff Rudes, Founder and CEO of J Brand.

To back track a little, J Brand was co-founded by Jeff, a denim manufacturer who has had over 30 years in the industry and former stylist Susie Crippen in 2004. The two set out to create timeless, classic and sophisticated jeans with the emphasis on fit and the result? A wining combination of style and comfort.

In 2012 J Brand introduced a Ready-to-Wear collection designed with luxurious contrasting fabrics while continuing the simplistic attention to detail and sensibility which embodies this brand.

The Friday after the conference on a beautiful Sydney day I sat down with Jeff in Bondi to find out more about the brains behind the brand and what we can expect to see next.

Claire: How do you split your time between Los Angeles and New York?

Jeff: I wake up very early so I work from home in the morning. I have my structure and I take home work. Of course there is a lot of communication and emails to get through and it's a good time to do it between Europe and New York. It's quiet. Me and a few dogs. At this time of the day there are no interruptions, the manufacturing issues come up all the time and the design team know that if there is something they need to show me they've got a licence to knock on the door.

Claire: So you're really hands on?

Jeff: Oh yeah. Very close to the product. Very hands on in the business. I've been doing this 35 years and I would say I'm pretty experienced in all sides of it, manufacturing, finance, distribution - anything that we can have a problem with I've experienced that problem. So if there is some solution that I can contribute to - sometimes it IS the solution.

Claire: You've obviously got a very rich history in denim and starting this brand in 2004, what was the vision? Have you reached the goal you wanted to with the introduction of Ready-to-Wear?

Jeff: Well reaching it would expand it to the next level of retail, product expansion and arriving to it being an established fashion brand and we've started that from the platform of the jean brand.

The vision. It was to have a clean, minimal, sophisticated look. I aspire to what Ralph Lauren does, and the look that Ralph does. I've never really worn logos in my life. The co-creator of J Brand and I have a very similar aesthetic.

I used to be a tournament tennis player as a kid. I wore two logos, Fred Perry and Lacoste every once in a while. You couldn't give me anything else from those young days with a logo that I would wear. I just wouldn't do it. So it was about clothes rather than the identity of the brand and the identity of the jean, which would be the back pocket design. It was about the person.

What our original goal was from a fashion point of view - we had that customer in our sights from day one. She's aspirational because she's classic and approachable, but she's chic in a way and she can be casual.

Claire: Do you think that is why you have such a cult following. Anyone who is anyone wears your jeans and so too do most fashion savvy women. Is it because of the understated branding and quality J Brand is known for?

Jeff: Yes and she can, as a canvas, dress herself. So it's a different experience. Its not about ' how do I dress the jean?' It's 'how do I dress myself using the jean?'

What is the jean ? It is minimal, it is clean, it's nothing that screams anything and the fit is incredible. If a women wouldn't know (who has any sense of style) what to do with that, she needs to learn a little bit about style...... Which is not a bad thing.

Claire: To quote you yesterday: 'The jean is a canvas to create a style' I absolutely love that. A jean is a wardrobe essential. What role do you see the jean playing in 50 years time?

Jeff: Ok well lets go back 100 years, that jean as we know it was a 501 and went till the early 70's until the french jeans and the fashion jeans (which is kind of what we are doing today).

I was inspired by a jean that I made back in the 70s, which was from a french jean. Same thing we are doing now, clean, dark, incredible fit but it was ridged so you had to lie on the floor and squeeze to get them on - that's what mum did. So its got long-geverty. Now what's the modern going forward? Its about beauty and style. It wasn't about this back then, it was more casual. The jeans were a weekend thing back then. Today its' chic, you can go anywhere and be wearing a jean. Every restaurant 10 years ago people would say 'I have to put my Alaia dress on because we are going to a chic place. ' Now, they could wear a great blazer, blouse, and a pair of jeans and the right shoes and they might be one of the most fashionable people in the restaurant.

So it is about fashion. Where is fashion going to be in 50 years? My mums capri pants are things that they are going to wear tomorrow (I use my mum because it goes back to the 60s). But every thing is cyclable. Jeans are a fashion piece, it's that canvas, it's comfortable.

But here is the secret - it's that thing that women feel beautiful in and they feel sexy but not overtly sexy, they look beautiful and this is not going anywhere.

Claire: You also mentioned collaborations yesterday, I'm big on this and you've done some great ones. Where has that put you where you otherwise wouldn't be?

Jeff: It's about doing something special that gives you credibility. You wage yourself above the rest of what America is doing. The stores want something special because there is no exclusivity anymore. Most stores have the same thing - what Barneys have Bergdorfs have. So today what the stores want is as much exclusivity as they can have and then the consumers want that. One off, can't get it everywhere, its limited edition, its got maybe their two favourite brands together making this product. So its a great thing to do and something we love to do because of the experience of working with the designers. But what have we got? Well, the press loves it, it's not a revenue generating project because we do contribute back, as well as we aren't shipping enough to make money and the development costs and all of that are high. But people use that word 'cool factor'. There is a cool factor around building a brand doing projects that are considered unique and cutting edge.

Claire: Who is on your wish list to collaborate with?

Jeff: Ha ha, Wow!! We are working on it. We have met a few times but we aren't at liberty to say.

Claire: Can you give me an initial?

Jeff: No. But I can give you a country... Botswana! Ha- No, France.

It will be probably like with everyone we've done, brilliant... Christopher (Kane), speaks for himself, we spend a lot of time with Christopher, he is like family now, family to the brand.

But this will probably top them all. It's not a really grand, global brand because we never choose to do it that way. We wanted them to be established and the emerging part was jumping to the next level. Like a season after we finished with Christopher and we knew that he was going to either get bought or build himself to becoming an incredible designer brand. PPR comes in and buys and invests. So we kind of pick - who is the next to go to that level and who should we partner with because you know all the press we get, benefits them.

Claire: When do you see this being announced?

Jeff: Somewhere by the end of the year and it will probably be for our Fall 14 or Spring 15. We want to keep the spotlight on our RTW line and what we are doing internationally. A lot of the jeans, the new technology of fabrics that we are adding (as we have added 5 new fabrics in the last 2 seasons) and there is a lot of technology in denim. Comfort, stretchability and feel that is completely different in how we knew it even a year ago.

So we want to put the focus on that, especially with RTW, and we might do something like a presentation in London or go to Europe with a presentation before we do this collaboration. To give the attention to what we are doing. Because once we do this collaboration, believe it or not, all the spotlight from the press is going to be on this collaboration.

Heres another thing. We are looking at some local collaborations, maybe in Italy, someone special and close to home. We might look to do something here (Australia) with someone. The 5x5 we did in London; Peter Pilotto, Christopher Kane, Erdem, Meadham Kirchhoff and Richard Nicoll. We had an Australian and he was the best selling jean of all of them! His was a coated jean to the thigh (like a thigh high boot) and then regular black denim the rest of the way. Every jean was brilliant. But one is going to out-sell the other and he was number one. So our experience already with an Australian designer is great!

We are shopping stores tomorrow and looking at a few local designers and checking the market to get a feel for who's doing what.

Claire: What is the next trend that we are going to see in jeans?

Jeff: Fashion is a big part of what we are doing, which means that's what the customer wants. We speak to the customer. Yes there is your 5 pocket jean, give me a new fabrication if its summer, this year this very cliche lighter blue, its all about the right kind of blue thats a big part. Its the white t-shirt, and that jean and the right shoe and you're ready to go for the summer. Indigo is very strong right now. Colour for us is back to neutral, we don't want to see anymore brights! We always do great with neutrals. Off-whites, navy, blush, khaki, greys. That's our colour pallet.

And then the fashion, and the fashion is the fit of our jeans so everything is inspiration to our fit, but its novelty via fabric. The jacquards. Internal jacquards and there are some woven jacquards and they are so perfect because its for our customer. They are not loud and they are some what geometric. That will keep the customer curious and interested.

Claire: We've spoken a lot about work. Yesterday you said 'The simplest things are often the hardest to achieve' how does that relate to you personally?

Jeff: Thats a great question. I have this saying, 'don't try too hard' because when you try too hard its obvious. And that could be anywhere in your life, the way you dress, in your home, in your recreational choices. So its always keeping yourself in check and not trying too hard because it's easy in this business to over board, go wide and end up with too much. Its like that menu at a New York deli thats like 5 pages and you turn it and go what?! Then you just go next door for a pizza. And you're like why didn't you give me one page of great stuff!

Its about keeping it simple. I try and keep that simplicity in my life as well. There is a lot going on and it's very easy to let everything get to you. Humility, being connected, available. You know you go to stores in New York and they treat you like a rockstar and I leave and laugh and say all we do is make jeans, we didn't just cut a movie, we didn't just perform on stage. Its nice to dress Madonna and Mick Jagger and Gwen and so on- and it could be very easy to let that go to your head.

I drive a very humble 12 year old suburban to my office every day because I love it. It's a way to keep myself grounded, even though things change you don't need to let everything change.

In London last week I caught up with Carmen. I thought I'd share some of the great pieces we can expect to see next season and her buying strategy for My-Wardrobe.com moving forward.

Expect a more refined, grown-up look from my-wardrobe this autumn/winter 2013-14. New fashion director, former Harpers Bazaar senior fashion editor Carmen Borgonovo, has been busy overhauling the online fashion emporium's offering for the new season.

"I knew I wanted to streamline it, clean it up and give it a better edit," she said, "I wanted to make it more on-trend, reflecting what's happening on the runways while still being commercial. Everything makes more sense now. It's a curated, clear vision of who we are - fashion, stylish and also wearable."

As far as weeks go, this week was pretty damn spectacular. Staying with one of my oldest dearest friends and her family in London and having the opportunity to talk to some of my personal heros in the fashion industry were just some of my highlights. Then to leave London for Paris for a girls weekend? Yep. Pretty good.

Saying this however, getting home to my beautiful little family was pretty hard to beat.

One of my favourite things to do on a cold winters day when the rain is relentless and there are no more cups of tea, books or old films to watch I love bundling everyone in the car and driving. Stereo turned up and just driving, taking in the storm from the streets.

Yesterday, after 2 days of crazy rain, wind and storms we did just this. AND I found a gem in the form of a mix cd of old-school hip-hop. Pac-Man, leg warmers, lycra and The Worm. Could it get any better?

(Actually, don't answer that.)

Fresh off the plane and these images feel so close to me I could almost touch them. I adore the style of our european sisters.

It's no secret that love a bit of international inspiration and I should add that for as many incredible stylish outfits I saw in and around London and Paris...there were 10,000 bad ones. The chic girls (and guys) stand out in the crowd, that's for sure....

And as far as the Australian fashionistas compare? Mighty fine...

I have to say, this editorial is a lot stronger in print than in this format. It MOVED me. And not just because I dropped the magazine as I was reading it....

In all seriousness I love it. The styling and the freedom of this shoot. The open fields, Nirvana reference, the checkered shirt and that shot with the cactus.... Brilliant. I heart the 90's.
