Well we know what Karl Largerfeld creates but to see where he lives is quite another thing all together. I did not expect this kind of futuristic home. His apartment is located in the Quai Voltaire in Paris.

Brrr, I feel chilly.....

Mary Katrantzou is an amazing designer and her creations are truly unique. She is also incredibly down to earth and refreshing to talk to in this world where designer is sometimes hailed king. There were no airs and graces just pure excitement when Mary spoke about her career. It was contagious.

Q. I just wanted to say congratulations on your huge success! How have you enjoyed being in Australia to start with?

A. We've loved it to be honest! We have had such a busy schedule that I keep saying that we haven't really seen that much. But everyone has been incredible! We met some amazing people who are coming back to Sydney, some were from Sydney or are coming here so we are going to see them today and tomorrow. Just the response has been incredible!

It was amazing to get to see the David Jones store and meet a lot of the customers. Get to watch the show! A lot of the designers I didn't know so it was great to see all the Aussie talent in full form. And also the David Jones buyers because it was really informative to see what they picked up from each of the designers because you understand a lot about how women dress.

Q. What is your perspective on Australian style compared to our English and European friends?

A. It's difficult to say because it's so new. You get glimpses and you make certain assumptions.
But it's so difficult because we haven't been here long enough but I was really surprised with how much colour Australian women wear! I thought WOW there is huge potential here! Ha ha! I think its probably because its just coming out of summer that poeple were coming with their most beautful summer dresses and all tanned. A lot of women who I saw mostly at the show were wearing pieces that were really fun and I guess up-lifting in the colour and the shape. Young dressing!

Q. Your bio reads like every fashion designers dream but you actually started in architecture and interiors. Why the switch?

A. Yes! Well the switch was a little bit random in that I didn't feel that when I was transitioning it was going to be a permanent switch. I just always had the dilemma of what I wanted to do and I decided to do architecture because it was a more pragmatic approach to design and one that if I was going back to Greece it would probably lead to a job. It was more that and I was actually really good at shape and form and 3D structure so it made sense. But I always enjoyed working with colour so I took a semester at St Martins to do a textiles course and I loved the diversity and flexibility it gave you to surface design and to apply to any medium you wanted. Then it happened to be fashion in the end. I think it was great that I was able to combine in my work as I started to evolve and we started building a team that could take on certain complicated structures to bring form in my work as well. Its very integral, the print and the form.

Q. You marry them so well together and thats what makes them so unique. I do love that.

A. Thank you

Q. What has been your most defining moment in your career so far?

A. I think the collection we did on interiors. Which was the lamp shades skirts, I think it gave a different dimension to my work and took it a way from just being print and into being something that has to do with form and shape and fabric innovation. Every season and post that season we always try and develop a lot of techniques so that its not just about the printed image, it's everything you can build around that world. Within knitwear, within doing our own brocades, our own embroidery. I think that was definitive because before that it was a shift dress with a very definitive print that did all the work. I think I was tired of that aesthetic. I think that was definitive.

This season I was also nominated as designer of the year at the British Fashion Awards. First of all I was shocked because just a year ago I had won emerging designer but second of all it made me feel there was appreciation for what I do and its an acknowledgement from your industry and its an amazing feeling and I think it positions you on a different level.

I think that was defining as well - though Stella won - Ha ha!

Q. You dress some of the most influential people in fashion. Who are your favourites?

A. Difficult to say. So many women have worn the designs really well and sometimes surprising so in that I never thought the pairing would have work at that moment in time. For example when Keira Knightly wore us at the Venice Film Festival. It was coming after that season on lamp shades, there was something very quirky about that and you wouldn't expect somebody who dresses as elegantly as Keira Knightly to make that choice but she wore a dress from the Belgium Collection which was based on Faberge eggs and objects of art in such a timeless and elegant way that I think that pairing was perfect for that time.

More recently we did this incredible dress for Tilda Swinton for a creative shot by J Stafford for W magazine and just seeing some shots of that and even though its not in real life there is something very iconic. And then just really fun outings that you never expect, Mirada Kerr wore us (to talk about an Aussie) really recently on Good Morning America, that was named Kerr ha ha! So that was really really good!

Q. Your prints and designs are mesmerising. What inspires you to do something different for each collection?

A. I think that very fact that because my work isn't just about a printed motif or a repeat design but you want there to be a story that you send, a theme that allows you to research in depth. I guess I'm an in depth researcher that really likes exploring something new every season. And just testing what you can do to decorate a dress from a completely removed inspiration season after seaon. I think I would be very bored if we only did florals every season or we only did checks every season! I think it keeps it more interesting. I think there is so much beauty in design and then filtered design that you can take and do something new with it and something fresh and hopefully desirable for women to wear!

Q. It's amazing what you've achieved in such a short time..

A. I know it is a short time!!

I had a strange feeling when I visited St Martins recently when we were looking for a junior women's wear designer. It just felt so surreal because only four and a half years ago I was having my own examination at St Martins! I think becasue your going constantly and you never stop, you never really look back at what's happened! Sometimes when we travel and I see people being aware of what we do its a great sense of achievement and usually I'm really kind of harsh with myself and I think it could always be better there could always be more! But sometimes I think wow in a very little time we've achieved a lot and its nice to see that support!

Q. So, the serious questions now. What is your ultimate holiday destination?

A. Usually its Greece! But if I want to see something more exotic where I've never been before... I mean I love Greece and I'm from Greece and I really think that the islands are incredible!!

I don't live there and I guess I combine that with seeing my family and my friends so its always a good time to go back. If I'd have to say somewhere else I'd love to go to Brazil, Rio maybe... who knows?!
Even coming to Australia, I've wanted to come for so long and even though its not a holiday it's great to have great weather and just feel you're removed from London and you're day to day routine!

Q. What are your plans for tomorrow on your day off?

A. We're doing many things. We're going to the zoo, we're going to Manly, we're going to Icebergs and we're going to see De Novo. We heard its amazing from our new Aussie friends! So we are planning that!

Thats quite a lot to fit into one day Mary!

When I interviewed Giuseppe in Milan last year he was showing me photos from the previous night out having dinner after the Gucci show with Anja and some of his other close friends, so hearing about this fabulous collaboration comes as no surprise. Those legs and his shoes and their styles combined. A match made in footwear heaven?

Top model Anja Rubik now adds designer to her resume, thanks to this capsule collection of shoes and handbags she has designer with Giuseppe Zanotti. The subject of a new, black-and-white short film directed by current Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld, British star and face of Chanel Keira Knightley stars as the young Gabrielle, giving us a glimpse into Coco's extraordinary fashion mind. "Tweed jackets are very chic on a woman" she observes in the film, which apparently, was improvised, the starts making up their lines as they went along. Today Burberry launched their new global campaign for Burberry Spark sunglasses. The campaign features emerging musicians Coastal Cities, the Night VI and Broken Hands, each of whom have been carefully curated by Burberry Chief Creative Office Christopher Bailey.

To celebrate the new campaign, the three bands will launch a single and music video as a soundtrack.

The collection will be available at OPSM stores around Australia later in May.
