A Look from the Cyberoptix Collection
One of the more brilliant aspects of living in Brooklyn is the growth of the gallery scene. Something about this borough seems to inspire a creativity that is lacking on the island. One of the new galleries is Devotion Gallery which will be playing to your dark side this Saturday with their event at 319 Scholes Street. They'll be presenting an immersive art installation and live exhibition of dark and upcycled fashion works including: Cyberoptix, Bird Ov Prey , B.S. Mercantile and Sinner/Saint . You can also experience live performances by Brooklyn-based Black Swan, Baltimore-based Death Domain, Detroit-based DethLab, and local hero Violec (Ryan Brogan, Subtrak) -- and interstitial deejay sets by Cowboy Mark and Ghostly's Mike Servito. Admission will be $10 for non-members, and free for members.

A show of this scale is no small accomplishment for a new arts space and I'm excited to see an event that is not your average paintings and sculpture with a bad video thrown in, so I asked Marie Evelyn, one of the co-directors about the show and Devotion Gallery. Everything she's wearing is black and white. I love the mix of ladylike jacket with pants and combat boots. ...less sure of the belly baring top...but props for wearing it with conviction.

Can't afford thigh high boots or just don't think you'll wear them enough? Thigh high stockings or over-the-knee socks or legwarmers can be as sexy without the risk of looking like a dominatrix. Paired with bright red combat boots and a short skirt she has a look that's sexy yet approachable and all her own...love it.

Spotted at the gala: Miss Gala Darling herself looking very indie with her white fur coat and and matching hair. There's something about this look that's very grunge...I think it's both her hair (the white blonde, slightly unkempt locks) and a certain je ne sais quoi but I could see her hanging with Courtney Love before the plastic surgery when she was still the lead of a damn fine band.

Last week we attended the Forte fashion show sponsored by Seam Collective for Gilda's Club NYC. We saw this girl in the audience. She is rocking the studded black leather skirt and suede jacket. A sophisticated and personalized version of rocker chic. (oh and tomorrow an interview with Kenley Collins who was one of the designers in the show!)

Pink hair isn't seen as much as it used to be, but I still love seeing it. It's like coming across an old box of My Little Ponies...reminding you of childhood yet slightly twisted. I wonder if this girl always wears pink as well? Or if she changes the color of her clothing and hair simultaneously? Either way it's nice to get a reprieve from black! And her own styling with the biker boots, electric yellow bag and...wristband up the arm(?) keep it as quirky as it is cute.

Ralph Lauren introduced the prairie skirt in '78...and honestly I don't know if it's ever come back full on. But Diana makes it look new again by keeping it black and pairing it with a white vest and lace up boots. So when you see it around next spring remember you saw it here first.
