Florals For Men

I have finally managed to get Mr Style Eyes to wear florals. He has fairly set opinions on certain things in life, one being that that men should not wear florals. I think think the fact that the pattern is in black and it has an underlying stripe making this shirt a striped rather than a floral shirt might have swung it on this occasion and he has actually admitted to liking his new floral shirt.

The floral shirt was very kindly sent by Blue Inc and I believe that the textured black pattern is called 'flocking'. It is available in both a black and white stripe (like this one) or black and grey stripe. It kind of reminds me of wall paper (in a good way). It looks equally good with a pair of jeans or slightly smarter black trousers. I love it and think it definitely adds a bit of style to his almost pattern free wardrobe. I will just have to make sure he doesn't wear it in the same day as I wear a full on floral print dress or we may look a bit much.

How To Add Some Retro Glamour To Your Life

Lately I am feeling more and more inspired by retro glamour or fifties pin up styles. I particularly loved some of the outfits that I saw at Vintage at Goodwood and as irritating as she is, I can't help admiring Katie Perry's retro inspired look and outfits. I love the drama, the fun and the femininity of this look.

I am not sure that it can work as an everyday look for me at the moment, although I might try it out for some special occasions, but I love the idea of incorporating a bit of retro glamour into my every day style. Here are a few ideas on how you can do this.

Hair - I would love to try a proper retro hair do but for everyday just putting it half up and adding a flower works really well. For evenings out and special occasions mini hats and fascinators make a great addition. Check out Chloe Mostyn on Eco Emporia for some great hair accessories made from vintage fake flower arrangements. For some really fun fascinators for a party which include mini grand pianos, ice creams with wafers and trays of champagne glasses try the Fantasia collection by The Libertarian.

Make up - Make up is fairly easy. Just your usual foundation some liquid eyeliner over the top lid and some bright red lipstick give an easy retro glamour look that will look great even when you are wearing jeans. If you want more detailed information on how to do retro hair and make up, I would definitely reccomend visiting Retro Chick's blog and You Tube Chanel

Clothes - a fifties style dress, circle skirt or pencil skirt are all easy ways to get a bit of retro glamour. As fifties style is so on trend at the moment it should be easy to find these clothes but why not try to find the real thing by checking out vintage shops. The Urban Renewal label at Urban Outfitters and Tara Starlet (pictured above) also have some great fifties style dresses, skirts and playsuits made from recycled fabrics.

Accessories - fun and kitsch accessories are all a great way to add retro glamour to your outfits. Think cherries, icecreams and union jack designs. There are plenty of these accessories on Etsy. Nautical inspired accessories also look great.

A Lion Hunt in Bath

On Saturday we decided to wander into Bath to go on a lion hunt followed by dinner at Strada. Lions of Bath 2010 is a project where 100 individually decorated, life-size lion sculptures have been placed in and around Bath in order to raise money for charity and make people smile. The lions are dotted about all over the place from the railway station to the tops of buildings and in Victoria Park. In October the Lions will be auctioned off in aid of charity. I quite fancy one to go in the backgarden, although not sure Mr Style Eyes would be impressed with the idea!

I decided to wear the vintage floral dress that I wore to Vintage at Goodwood but in a slightly different way. I love the bright florals on dark background which lend themselves not only to summer outfits but also being combined with black for a slightly more autumnal look.

The bottom button on the dress is missing and I haven't replaced it. After Mr Style Eyes commenting that I was showing a lot of leg, I decided to wear it with leggings. I am glad that I did as it was really windy and the skirt kept blowing up.

New Styles Of Dr Martens

The year cult shoe brand Dr Martens celebrated its 50th year. The DM boot has had an iconic place on footwear history with its role in many different youth sub cultures from punks to skin heads and Goths. In my teenage years my black DM boots were permanently welded to my feet, these were the days before I started crippling myself with high heels. As a teenager I was a bit of a Goth (although I think Goths were a bit different back then to they are now) and also went through various stages of dressing in a way that could probably be described as Indie or grunge. My outfits consisted mainly of long skirts or shorter skirts with black opaque tights and velvet jackets from second hand shops with black Dr Marten boots.

With the whole grunge revival going on, I have been really tempted to invest in a pair of Dr Martens. They are so versatile and comfy and I know I would get loads of wear out of them. But another part of me thinks that I have already been there and done that.

I was really pleased to discover a whole range of alternative Dr. Martens on Spartoo. Ideal for a fresh take on my old favourite and perfect for the grown up grunge girl.

Friday Finds - Ethical Clothing in the Sales

I am going to keep this post fairly short and sweet as a large glass of white wine awaits me once I have finished writing. I dare not start drinking it now incase I loose all trace of will power and buy myself new clothes that I just don't need.

For those that do need some new clothes, I have spotted some great bargains in the sales on ethical clothes, because if you do have to treat yourself, buying ethical makes you feel so much better about it, no?

Around The House

Over the last few days, I don't seem to have got out much apart from popping to the shops and taking the children to the park. As I work from home I often find myself in the house all day and sometimes there can be a slight temptation to not make any effort at all with what I wear.

I do try and make a bit of an effort though, even though I am not going any where special and I refuse to ever wear a tracksuit (I don't even own one), although I have very occasionally been known to stay in my PJ's. Here is what I have been wearing this week:

Today I thought I would try my hair in a different hairstyle. If you read my blog regularly, you will probably have noticed that I virtually never wear my hair up, mainly because my hair is a free spirit and much prefers to do its own thing, I don't usually even brush it unless I wash it (if you have curly hair, you will probably understand) .

Ladies Day Outfit

On Saturday afternoon, I went to Ladies Day at Bath Racecourse with Mr Style Eyes and some friends. Apart from a fun afternoon and evening out, ladies day is a great opportunity to get a bit dressed up. The weather was pretty bad, lots of wind and rain and lots of very wet people, but luckily we were in the VIP marquee and managed to bag a great table by a window to watch the racing through the rain. Mr Style Eyes took charge of placing the bets which saved me going in the rain and we won a few which paid for most of our drinks. I even managed to get home without getting my new shoes (given to me by Sarenza) covered in mud. My favourite memory of the day is people dancing to Michael Jackson's Thriller, in the rain, in their best outfits with and without umbrellas in the pouring rain outside the party tent.

I decided to get a vintage dress for the occasion as I thought it would be a bit different to the high street dresses on offer and a bit cheaper. I am fairly new to buying clothes on ebay (actually I have only bought one before) and was absolutely amazed that I managed to get this dress for just £20 from Retromancer Vintage. I love the shape, length and pattern and it is really well made. I think it may have been handmade as you can see the tiny stitches inside where the lining has been very neatly sewn in.

After many hours of deliberation and seaching on the internet I finally decided to get this fascinator from ebay from Louiza at Feathermania. For some reason I was determined to get one with butterflies on. At the last moment I changed my mind from a fascinator that just looked like lots of butterflies fluttering around my head to this one which just has one white butterfly but the colours of the feathers were the perfect match for the dress. In order to get the comb to stay in my hair without backcombing (the racecourse gets really windy!), I concocted a hairstyle by sweeping the top layer to one side then clipping it into a mini bun on one side.

I'm Neutral

Oh no I'm wearing neutral colours again. I wanted to wear my white dress but it just doesn't seem right wearing it in its own when it is not really hot and sunny. This outfit was not really planned which is unusual for me as I'm not really spontaneous and I usually like everything planned well in advance. I started with the dress, added the cardigan as it was a bit cold, then the belt as it all looked a bit shapeless. If you are petite or find that clothes look shapeless and unflattering this suede and leather corset/ obi belt handmade by Emma at Style to Wear is a godsend. It makes baggy clothes look a little more fitted. I tend to wear it slightly above my waist as it is more flattering this way and creates a sort of empire line.

I promise my next outfit post will be anything but neutral as I am going to Ladies Day at the races and have an outfit planned with my new vintage dress.

Friday Finds - Classic Coats

Everyone is talking about classic coats and everyone seems to want one, including me. I learnt my lesson buying a cheap coat last year which is now no good for anything. This year I want to invest in a really good quality coat to last. The great thing about a classic coat is that it is really versatile and unlikely to go out of fashion so I will be able to wear it for years to come. In terms of colour I am stil undecided on whether to choose a black, navy, grey or camel coat.

That Beige Dress Again

Considering that I always say I am not a big fan of neutrals, this beige dress seems to be getting a lot of wear. This colour is just right for me, any lighter and I start to look pale and drained. I love the shape of this dress, it is so comfortable and doesn't even need ironing. I also love the many different ways that it can be accessorised.

Today I have accessorised with the Liberty scarf that I got at Vintage at Goodwood. I have also managed to get the red shoes that I have been wanting for ages. I needed a new pair of ultra comfy flats so I got these ones by Pikolinos in the sale. Pikolinos is a Spanish eco brand that uses artisan manufacture and combines 'style, comfort and respect for the environment'. They are definitely one of the best made and highest quality pair of shoes that I have ever owned and incredibly comfortable.

Style Eyes Weekly Fashion Round Up

I am running incredibly late this week with my round up due to severe weekend induced tiredness.

Anyway, I can now announce the winner of the Sarenza competiton for £60 of shoe vouchers is Franca. Congratulations and I hope that she finds a very lovely pair of shoes.

This week there have been some interesting posts by the team at the Fashion Buzz including great reviews of the Urban Renewal collection at Urban Outfitters and Motel Rocks Vintage both of which featured vintage clothes or fabrics reworked into modern clothes. There is also a great post on how to wear the seasons must have accessory, socks. Also lots of talk about camel (the colour not the animal!) in the posts Is camel making a comeback? and is camel the new black?

I have also been working hard on my eco and ethical fashion guide which I hope will contain some of the best eco and ethical fashion and sustainable clothing available online and people find more choice of clothes within their budget. If you know of any great eco, ethical, second hand or vintage retailers that I could add please let me know.

For those that have shown an interest in Vintage at Goodwood, there are lots and lots of pictures on the Vintage at Goodwood Facebook page. I can't wait until next year.

For anyone who is a little strapped for cash but needs a new pair of shoes, we have had quite a few listings on Posh Swaps, including second hand high heel shoes, flat shoes both designer and from the high street. Most are in really good condition and some have been barely worn.

Vintage at Goodwood - Part 2

In the second part of my report of my day at Vintage at Goodwood, I thought would tell more of my unfortunate incident in the Tangeray Torch club and more about my vintage shopping.

The Tangeray Torch club was described as a specially constructed 40’s style night club with a dance floor, big stage and a restaurant with a sumptuous menu for luncheon and evening dining served by stylish waiting staff. We decided to treat ourselves to a three course meal in the evening at £35 a head as it sounded great. When we arrived, we headed straight over to book our table we were told that we couldn't book in advance and should just turn up but we were warned not to get there too late. We turned up at about 7.30pm to allow us time to get seated before Kitten Von Mew, a Burlesque act was on and then waited and waited and waited.

Luckily everyone was very friendly in the queue and the couple behind us even shared their champagne. After an hour and a half we were finally seated. As there was a table for four available we shared a table with the couple behind us in the queue. After 15 minutes of being sat down, we were starting to wonder if we were ever going to get our dinner or even a drink when a waitress appeared, looked at the number on our table and demanded to know why we were sat on a VIP table. A little confused, we explained that this is where we had been told to sit. She then demanded that we show her who had seated us and told us that we had jumped the queue and had to go to the back. When we couldn't find the lady she demanded that we move and then called security. When I asked to speak to the manager, she just said 'I am the manager'

All credit to the man from security who very diplomatically spent about 15 minutes trying to persuade us to move. Everyone was starting to look by now though and I was starting to get pretty upset and very hungry, but I was not moving for anyone unless they found us another table, which they refused to do.

Eventually, Angela (who we were sharing a table with), who was considerably calmer than me even though she had also been insulted by the incredibly rude and snotty waitress/ manager, managed to get to speak to the manager who told us we should sit down and enjoy our meal we did not have to move. She did also get a reluctant apology from the lady in question, although I did not.

However amazing the Tangeray Torch Club, the food, the entertainment and the atmosphere was, the new waitress who served our meal was also great, I didn't really enjoy my meal after all that, we missed the act that we really wanted to see plus loads of other stuff whilst waiting in the queue and arguing about the table . Our bill came to £10 less than it should have done, I am not sure if that was a deliberate gesture of goodwill or just a mistake though.

Such a shame that this one very rude lady could ruin it for us, when everyone else we had met throughout the day was so lovely including the event staff. Also a shame that after all that (even from our VIP table) we couldn't see some of the acts as the people from the bar all came and stood in front of the tables.

Sorry about the very lengthy account but this was definitely something I felt I needed to get off my chest.

and so on to the much less stressful and more enjoyable time spent shopping. I loved browsing all the clothes in the vintage stalls. After trying on a few things I seemed to gravitate towards accessories which I need more and don't need to be tried on as the make shift changing rooms were quite hard work. I loved all of the different hats, headbands, hairclips and fascinators and the jewellery. So many beautiful things, I wanted to buy them all, unfortunately, the urge to shop took over and I didn't take as many photos as I would have liked.

All in all, Apart from the dinner incident, I really enjoyed Vintage at Goodwood. Next year I hope to go for the whole weekend, plan my outfits and footwear a bit better and take lots more pictures.

The trends for the coming months were dictated back on the catwalks in February, but now as September draws closer it's time to get our teeth into them and have a good hard think about those all important autumn buys. Particularly seeing as while I type this the weather is strongly urging me towards a winter wardrobe.

Vintage at Goodwood- part 1

To avoid a ridiculously long post, I have decided to break my review of Vintage at Goodwood into two parts. I only went for the day on Saturday but there was so much going on.

I enjoyed the day so much that I have decided I would like to go for the whole weekend next year. I will also be putting in a lot more though to next years outfit. I was a little worried about getting too dressed up because of the weather and as I was unsure of what it would be like. I am pleased to say that whilst we had some showers, it did get a little muddy underfoot but not too bad. I managed to wear my wedge heels until about 5pm when I swapped them for flats as I feared I might slip over. The organisers had put down lots of wood chippings on the busiest walkways which really helped.

The best thing about the event was definitely the people. Such amazing outfits ranging from the forties to present day, everyone had made so much effort, I could have spent all day just people watching. Also everyone was so lovely, definite a family event with people of all ages including children.

These ladies were Go Go dancers from London. I loved how polished and perfect they looked, even in the middle of a muddy field.

I went with my lovely sister and spent most of the afternoon browsing the various vintage shops (more on that in the next post) and drinking cocktails. We then watched some music and had a drink or two before joining the long queue and wait for dinner at the Tangeray Torch Club (more about that in my next post) followed by a little more music. Due to the length of time spent looking at the clothes and queuing for dinner we didn't get to see as much music as we would have liked - soz sis but you did say you were happy to do whatever I wanted! I also missed all of the things that I wanted to do including fashion shows (just couldn't be bothered to queue), the workshops - the circle skirt one was cancelled/ full- however I am not sure that I would have had the patience to do something like this in my completely ever excited state and the hair do (fully booked). I didn't really mind as I was only there for one day but next year I want to do it all.

The queue for the toilets! It is not quite as bad as it looks. The toilets were kept very clean except a little mud on the floor. There were plenty of them so the wait was only about 5 minutes.

There were lots of different stages with all sorts of different music, DJ's and live bands. As I mentioned before just too much to do and not enough time (the story of my life!). Other highlights of the day were the food and the vintage high street. There were plenty of food vans with a whole range of choices from fish and chips to toasties and organic produce from the Goodwood Estate. Thankfully there was not a single junk food van anywhere. Apart from my three course meal, I had a toastie and organic lager brewed on the estate. The high street had a Fortnum and Masons for stocking up in Champagne, strawberries etc, numerous beauty salons, a cinema, cocktai bar and traditional pub. It had a great buzz about it in the afternoon between the showers.

In part 2 I will tell more about the 3 course dinner at the Tangeray Torch Club (a fairly stressful experience!) and the vintage shopping.

Fashion Bloggers and Consumerism

A little while ago, I had a bit of a dilemma with my blog. I love fashion, I love clothes and I love blogging bit when I combined all three, it almost started to sound like a list of things that I had bought or ideas for what other people could buy. I am a strong believer that we should all try and minimise our impact on the environment but struggled to see how a fashion blog could fit in with this.

I am guessing there are plenty of others who have though that fashion bloggers are shallow, encourage consumerism and only interested in buying clothes. This is, I am glad, for the most part wrong and it has suddenly become very clear to me how much fashion bloggers are doing to help promote green fashion and how I can do more myself.

It has for a while been my opinion that whilst organic cotton, sustainable fabrics etc are great, the real key to sustainable clothing is a change in peoples attitude from buying cheap fast fashion that they wear only a few times to clothes that they wear loads and then recycle when they have finished with them. What has really struck me lately is that yes most fashion bloggers do have lots of clothes but they also value these clothes immensely recycling them when they have finished and often buying second hand and vintage. Fashion bloggers are immensely resourceful when it comes to creating outfits as so many create a constant stream of new outfits without a huge budget but don't really resort to poor quality fast fashion.

As influence to varying different degrees, fashion bloggers are in a position to help (even if only in a small way) to change peoples and the industries attitude to clothing and consumption. Here are some of the great things that my fellow fashion bloggers are doing to encourage sustainable clothing, I realise that not all of these things are a conscious attempt to be green but sometimes just a result of the huge value that they place on clothes.

Here are some of the recent things I have notice fashion bloggers doing to discourage consumerism and encourage more sustainable shopping.

Secondhand and vintage clothing - so many bloggers now feature second hand and vintage clothing in the outfit posts some even feature outfits that are completely thrifted/ secondhand and there are even quite a few blogs almost entirely dedicated to vintage or recycled clothes.

Shopping bans - I have noticed lots of fashion bloggers slowing down their consumerism with shopping bans. These are a great way of inspiring others and showing them how they can make their current wardrobe work without buying new clothes.

DIY - adapting clothes to suit the current trends is also a great way of extending a piece of clothings lifespan. I love the DIY projects published by fashion bloggers.

Recycling - I also am loving all the recycling that is going on in the blogosphere at the moment, from Pearl at Fashion Pearls of Wisdoms recent Bloggers sale day, to the upcoming blogger yard sale organised by Susie of Style Bubble. So many blogs also now have their own shops selling their own clothes, check out Gem Fatale, London Rose and Trying to Look Fab in your Forties. I have also arranged a few clothes swapping parties through my clothes swapping website.

Promoting green brands - I believe that bloggers are starting to think more carefully about which brands they promote on their blog. I love Selina of Flying Saucers recent blog post where she commented "If you're a blogger, please remember that if you're accepting freebies, consider all the environmental impact that has gone into the manufacture of the item, from crop growing, manufacturing, chemical treatments, labour, and transport, for something that you wouldn't have purchased in the first place. Consider making it a policy to see if the brand is aware of their responsibility to the environment! If you wouldn't have spent your own cash on it in the first place, will you get the use out of the item to justify its creation? Just some food for thought! "

The great thing about fashion bloggers promoting sustainable clothing is that looking good and creating great outfits is usually the primary concern and this is something that most people can relate to much more than lengthy eco/ ethical policies.

At Style Eyes I have much more planned on the subject of consumerism and sustainable fashion including a directory of sustainable clothing, interviews on the subject with other fashion bloggers and a review of the high streets progress towards sustainable fashion.

Friday Finds - Ankle Socks

OK I am a bit slow on the up take as usual but I have only just discovered the online sock store Tabio. Since discovering I have spent quite a significant amount of time pondering which socks to buy as a little treat. Eventually I settled on a pair of ankle socks and two pairs of knee socks. Unfortunately the knee socks in beige nylon with polka dots and a floral pattern were a big error of judgement. I am sure they would look great on someone with legs of the twig variety but my legs are far more of the tree trunk variety. The ankle socks however were a delight and I fear have started a new addiction that may far exceed last years tights addiction.

I will be wearing my socks with wedge sandals (as seen on the catwalk) as part of my outfit for Vintage at Goodwood on the weekend. Not exactly vintage, I know, but I like to mix it up a bit instead of wearing vintage top to toe and socks are such a brilliant way to update a vintage outfit or just something from last year. They have the added bonus of stopping my shoes from rubbing and are a great look that even me with my tree trunks can get away with when worn with a midlength a line skirt (or I think so anyway).

Any excuse to get dressed up

For someone like me who works from home and doesn't get out that much, I have to take every opportunity to get a bit dressed up. Yesterday my mum and dad took the children and I out for lunch at the local pub.

Although I only had nachos and half a pint of lager (I like to push the boat out ya know), I decided that I would make a bit of an effort in my cream chiffon dress, which was previously up for sale or swap due to never being worn, but I think I may have changed my mind.

My only reservation about this dress is that the lining is a little over shiney. However when I think of this dress as day wear rather for a night out, it suddenly has lots more potential as I don't often go out in the evening. My dad did comment that the tights look a bit like I have tattoos all over my legs - not sure if that is a good or bad thing.

The £6 Vintage Dress

Lately I have really been getting into vintage clothing not only because of its obvious environmental benefits bit also because I just can't get over what amazing dresses you can get for so little money. I am a complete ebay virgin but over the last week or so I have got a bit bid happy buying myself a few new vintage dresses. I got the most amazing handmade dress for just £20 and another dress for £25 both of which I will be featuring in an outfits soon. What I can't get over is the quality of these pieces for just £20, a new piece of clothing for this price would usually be really low quality. I also find the shape of these clothes works so well for my figure. Here is a vintage dress that I bought for just £6, the best thing about it is that at that price I am more than happy to wear it to be around the house doing ironing all day, no special occasion needed.

How to jump right out of a style rut

Today I thought I would offer a few tips in how to get out of a style rut. By a style rut I mean, when you feel bored or uninspired by your clothes and they don't make you feel great.

This is somewhere that I sometimes find myself in, partly due to being tired, partly because I am severely lacking in time and also because of the practicalities of being a mum. It is easy to fall into a pattern of not paying much attention to what you are wearing. Every one has their own reasons for falling into a style rut ranging from lack of money to poor body image and just feeling a bit fed up with life.

I am a strong believer in the power of getting dressed up in clothes that make you feel good as a way to feel happier, more self confident and motivated. So here are just a few of my ideas on how to jump right out of a style rut (although I am sure there are plenty more ways too).

Impose a clothes shopping ban

It might seem like a strange thing to do when you are bored of fed up of the clothes that you have but I actually found that a shopping ban forced me to look very differently at the clothes that I already have.I found lots of different ways of wearing my clothes and saved money. Part of being in a style rut can be the repetitive buying of clothes that you don't need or that you don't feel great in. Whilst on a shopping ban, I started to get a really clear idea of where the gaps in the my wardrobe were and when I did start shopping again I put so much more thought into what I bought. You could also use the money saved to buy something amazing that you wouldn't usually be able to afford.

Start a style blog

Showing off your daily outfits on a blog is guaranteed to make you think about what you are wearing a little more creatively. Well it worked for me ! I'll admit not every outfit works and sometimes I look a state but at least I don't wear jeans and t shirts every day and I really enjoy picking out what to wear.

Swap some clothes

Swapping the clothes that you don't feel great in is a fun and risk free way of trying out a new look. Holding a clothes swap party with friends is a good opportunity to try on clothes that you might never normally consider buying. If you want a bit more choice in terms of styles or sizes try a clothes swap website like Posh-swaps.com (sorry I am a bit biased about this).

Try shopping with someone different

Friends and family can have a string influence over what we buy if they come shopping with us. If you always shop with the same person, try shopping with someone else or even on your own for a change. You will probably find you come home with some really different stuff.

Edit your Wardrobe

This is an old favourite of the stylists but it really does work. I try and have a clear out regularly of anything that doesn't fit properly, looks awful etc. This eliminates the temptation to wear those old comfy clothes that just don't do me any favours. Even if I am just sitting around the house working, I try and make an effort. I swap, sell and donate some of it. I also store some clothes that I am bored with as find that a season or two later I suddenly want to wear them again. Going through and editing your wardrobe also helps you to remember what you have actually got and think about how you might wear it.

Do a SWOT analysis of your wardrobe

This probably sounds a bit technical but looking at what works well, what doesn't work well and what potentially would suit your body shape, colouring, lifestyle and budget is a good way to move forward with your style. Just write a list of strengths, weaknesses and opportunities. You could also think of a few words that you would like your style to project, then search for clothes that fit in with these words.

Take a few risks

Go into a shop that you would never usually go in and pick up five pieces of clothing that you wouldn't even consider buying and try them on. You don't have to buy them but you may find they give you a few ideas on new looks that you could try.
