Don't shampoo except every 2-3 days. So women are thinking, but "I FEEL like my roots are greasy or limp." They turn to the powders or Heloise's old remedies which aren't far fetched and most of the time are eco-friendly. Vinegar of any type is ascetic acid that is used in most clarifying shampoos. Many clients remember their Grandmothers using vinegar to rinse their hair. A vinegar rinse removes soap residue from the hair. In fact, I have produced a mist called Start Fresh as a response to shampooing your hair less, for your scalp to remain fresher, less irritable and to remove and lingering odors from your hair.
Hair is a fiber just like cotton in a T-shirt. If you wash that T-shirt everyday for a month, that cotton fiber and it's color will look and feel worn. The same goes for your hair. So if you are paying me "good" money for haircolor, I want that color to last and shampooing everyday will weaken that color and the hair shaft. Our obsession with clean hair is just evolving into the area of eco-money-friendly self care. www.stylelikeapro.com

Just in from the Universe! I'm certain that you have never considered that a paddle brush could be your hairs best friend. A brush has always been a way to relate to girls and women of different generations, since the time of Cleopatra. In the movie Little Women or in the book, the sisters often brushed each others hair, usually at night. For the doer it was a relaxing motion and intimacy given to another individual. It was an unspoken acceptance and tenderness afforded to someone you love, usually between females. Men, in the form of sons or husbands had been known to brush their loved one's hair, usually a certain number of strokes. I can imagine that the art of hair brushing could be intimate foreplay between husband and wife. What a tender turn on! If we could ever reduce the number of activities we do during the day, maybe brushing our hair may become important, again!

Just try this simple bedtime soul and hair nourishing activity on the evening prior to shampooing your hair. First acquire a modern form of the old boarhair bristle brush, that came in a set with a matching mirror and nail buffer. The modern form is a paddle brush. The head of the brush measures 3x4" and has plastic bristles imbedded in a cushion. Price can range from$4-30.00. The higher priced paddles come with special wood finishes and bristles. The inexpensive ones work as well. First brush from your front hairline to the back top of your head. Do the same on each side of your head. then brush down the back of your head to your neck. Repeat 5-10 strokes each. Then brush from the back of your head to the front hairline 10 times. Last is from right to left side of your head, 10 strokes each. Try to keep your shoulders relaxed. If your shoulders are up by your ears, lower them and relax.I'm here for you. Remember your paddle brush is your best friend. Visit http://www.stylelikeapro.com/ for more news. Bless you all! The reason you hair Dries faster when you aim the nozzle of the hairdryer at your scalp (instead of just down the length of the hair shaft), is because..... The force of the heated air bounces off the scalp and down the hair shaft for about 6-8 inches, where the hair remains cold and damp. So, in reality you get 2 for one (1.) dry root area and the (2.)hair length starts to dry, too. so you are speeding up the process of drying your hair.
Remember only dry the scalp or root area to 80% dry, before you start paddle brushing the rest of your head.

That was a lightbulb moment.

Are the Ionic and T3 Dryers worth the High cost and High Heat?

All the new rage are the Ionic and the T3 hair dryers. Are they really Safe for the Consumer?
For 90% of consumers, a resounding NO!!!
The reason, most consumers dry their hair way too much and too long. Yes, I know that these dryers are to cut down on the time that you need to dry your hair. But most of us do not have the skills to accomodate the speed in which these dryers do their job. Example, say you are use to driving 60 miles an hour all over town. Then you get in a car and you can only drive at 100 miles an hour. It becomes really scary, then you over adjust to curves and hills and end up in an accident. Same thing happens your hair. You over dry the hair, infact it's FRIED and brittle. Not what you wanted. Medium to fine hair please do not use this dryer unless you get a blowdry class.
These products are excellent for drying extemely thick hair or very skilled people. We everyday consumers feel we are skilled, but even I as a professional do not have eyes on the back of my head to see how much I am over drying my hair.

Hair Under a Baseball Cap.. Does it always look so bad when you take it off?

Well, I have to admit, I have had my Universite'de Paris baseball cap on for essentially 24 hours. Now, I think my hair should have looked terrible when I took it off for Yoga today. Having not showered for that length of time due to a break in our water main to the house. To lower my frustration I focused on something good for me and it was perfect. Back to HAIR.
It did look all scrunched up in the bang area, but 15 minutes into the hour practise I noticed that my hair was taking on it's normal look. Bangs were down and my hair sort of was laying in the right hanging shape.
Why, why, why? My body heated up, more like my head. And I believe doing Downward Dogs helped to airate my hair. When the head and hair have internal moisture the primary style will reinactivate itself. I know this seems odd, but true. when you follow the dirctions on my DVDs your hair will respond better to styling of all types. What flat ironing versus "ROUND ironing? That's one way to start. when we say round we mean using a curling iron or rollers in our hair. To "flatten" means to smooth out the hair amke it less curly, less bulbous and/or less frizzy. It does not mean to make it flat to your head, looking limp without body.
Flat ironing should mean "smooth ironing". You can achieve some volume and heighth with a flat iron and minimal product. I'll take pictures and show you in my next blog or learn this technique from several of my DVD's at http://www.stylelikeapro.com . The DVD's are a great tool to assist you in learning interactively how to straighten or smooth your hair.

What's Easy, Fast and the Most Inexpensive Thing You Can Do for YOURSELF

Style Your Hair the best way you know how. But, and I mean a big BUT, most women from the age 12 to 100, never learned the best way to do this. By best, I mean fastest easiest way to style their, with the least amount of effort.
First you start with appropriately shampooed and conditioned hair.
Next, the fun begins. You aim the nozzle of the dryer at your scalp, pulling the roots of your hair straight up. Dry the roots 80% dry. Apply alittle product at scalp for volume if needed.
Third, paddle brush your from back to the front of your head using your head as the round brush. this smooths and elevates your hair.
Fourth, use paddle brush to pick up the hair on top of your head blowdry the roots again to create volume.
Fifth, with the hair shaft feeling cool, not cooked(dried out feeling) you can now use your straightening iron to smooth and curve your hair. You can create volume with the iron too.
done in under 10 minutes with a little practice.
If you like what I just told/taught you in a short synopsis, a longer version with visual indepth informationcan be seen in http://www.stylelikeapro.com Dvd's, they are totally interactive.
Enjoy and let me know what you like and not like.

What Has Been My Worst Hair Salon Experience? Continued...

So Leslie understands she's of a warm nature with her freckles. Also what is her preference or what shades of hair color makes her feel good. Most of us intuitionally know this, but some women respond negatively to warmth in their hair. (Let me not digress, that's a whole other issue.) Warmth should always be part of the equation when formulating her haircolor. It does not mean that the colorist use red, but maybe a gold or yellow in the formula. Only when hair looks brassy (copper penny tones) should a cool neutral be added. this relates to her all over color, a tint or low lights, not highlights.
As for lightening Leslie's hair with highlights, The ULTIMATE BLONDE highlights had to be bleach highlights. On her I would not use the ultimate lightener just a nice high lift tint that's neutral or gold. Leslie's hair will contribute warmth to her own color.
Now if the highlights are too light and bright, Leslie can go back and request a toner. A toner helps to refine the color of the highlights.
Ultimately, her appointment is a partnership with this stylist. If she doesn't feel good after consulting with them, leave. I recognize that's hard, but have your expectations outlined in your head. If that stylist meets 5 out of 7 points, then stay. Leslie could have said err on the side of warmth with depth or with lightness.

What has Been My Worst Hair Salon Experience?

This was told online.

Mine was with color. I have freckles. Hence, ash is not a good additive for me. I tell hairdressers that but they don't get it sometimes. So, once I went to a girl who charged me 300.00 in lowlights and I left looking like a corpse. My hair was all ash brown and she removed all the warmth from my hair. It was a disaster.Another time, I went to a colorist to go lighter for the summer. She used some ultimate blonde color. I told her no ash, but she must have used it because my widows peaks were grey when I left! She said it would blend out as I shampooed but of course it did not.

Answer: Let's call her Leslie. Leslie did have knowledge of her hair color, and skin coloring. It's important that she also know her eye color and what her lifestyle is like. Meaning, does she mind coming in every 4 weeks for color or does she want to push it to 3 months. What can she tolerate?

Next, what kind of warmth does she want to see in her hair. Freckles most always denote warmth, not necesarily "red". More tomorrow.

What has been your worst hair appointment.

Why Does Curly Hair get Frizzy in Wet Weather?

The simplest of answers is that the hair does not contain enough internal moisture to counteract the outside environmental moisture. If your hair had enough internal moisture then any outside wetness would just weigh the hair down, not frizz it out. But, when your hair is too dry it takes alot of wetness to make it heavy.
How do you keep our hair from getting frizzy in damp or wet weather? When moisturizing/conditioning our hair, apply it only to midshaft to ends, never the scalp. Then only rinse your hair for 10 seconds. Yes I said 10 seconds. I want your hair to feel SILKY, not squeeky-clean or slick. SILKY!when wet. Remember, your towel, hands and styling tools along with your hair dryer all attract moisture out of your hair. Also, before and while drying your hair apply a serum to your ends. Most serums retain that needed moisture. Do not over dry the ends with a hair dryer. Lastly apply 1-2 more drops of serum.
All my DVD's have the how to's on them.

Do You Go To Bed With WET HAIR?

DON'T!!!
Yes, I know it saves you time in the morning. Damp hair keeps you cool at night in case your body runs hot while sleeping. Well, at least I'm not drying out my hair with a hair dryer.
These are all reasonable time saving strategies.
Let me give you some reasons not to go to bed with damp/wet hair.
1. Hair when wet is structurally weaker, is elastic and can be stretched further than when dry.
Try it, Pull a dry hair between 2 fingers. It will lengthen a little or stay the same. If the hair does not lengthen at all and does not break, it is very healthy. After you shampoo and condition your hair ( as stated in previous blogs or on StyleLike A Pro DVDs ) pull on another hair, it will definitely lengthen and shrink back. That's called elasticity. Now if the hair does not shrink back automatically or at all, it means that hair is weakened. Weakened hair can be due to age of the hair, sun/wind exposure, dehydration from tools, products or chemicals.
2, When your damp hair is being rubbed between your head and the pillow, the hair is being stretched. The hairs' cuticle (outside layer) can not close. It is being attracted to the fabric, because the fabric is pulling moisture from the hair. When the elasticity of the hair remains stretched as the hair dries, there can be breakage and roughness to your hair. In the morning your hair will require more leave-in conditioners and will not respond as easily to styling. With roughened hair equals lack of S-H-I-N-E!
PLEASE DON'T GO TO BED WITH WET HAIR!

Have an awesome day!

S-H-I-N-E and Destroying It.

Shine of any kind is a wonderful thing. Shiny hair, a shiny smile, shiny eyes and a shiny car all signify health and abundance. What dulls these eyes, hair, smile and OK, car is lack of care. Lack of sleep, lack of appropriate food and commitment to the care of all theses abundances.
As for hair, there can be an overcommitment, bordering on obsession. Don't over shampoo, condition only needed areas of the your hair, only rinse for 10 seconds. Dry your hair with a dryer that's not on the highest setting and start at the scalp not the ends. Use product judiciously. When in doubt on any of these ideas jsut read past blogs, send me an email,or go to www.stylelikeapro.com and look over a few of the DVDs and all the instructions are there.
Sometimes less is more. Now I'll go over what naturally contributes to shiny hair.
1. Straight hair has a tight cuticle (outside layer). When the cuticle is closed then the light reflects off the cuticle as "shine". Curly hair does not have the tight cuticle,(if it did the hair would not be curly).
2. No chemical processes on the hair. Not even semi-permanent color.
3. Regular haircuts, be it every 4 weeks to 10 weeks, removes frayed ends, so that the ends of the hair remains stronger.
Most of us cannot leave our hair alone. We may have to tint our hair, don't always have time to cut our hair and welike to change the color of our hair. In fact I have a client who claims to be a shine junky, because she does not see that natural shine that straight hair has. She is looking for that intense shine only found on TV commercials.
Darker hair shines more than blonde hair. The only time that I have seen blonde hair be intensely shiny was when a client regularly swam indoors without a swim cap. The hair had absorbed the pool chemicals and sealed the hair. Her hair did not turn green, because this client swam indoors. Sunlight turns the hair green.
If your hair feels silky and soft (not dry or crunchy) then your hair will shine.

Did Michelle shampoo her hair the morning after?

Would you have? I should hope not! Why?
Because her hairstyle is an easy universal style that can be reworked with ease. The morning after before Michelle steps into the shower she should spray Start Fresh Mist ( helps remove any environmental smells from hair and scalp, feeling refreshed) on her hair or on her scalp. Add a hint more moisture from the shower. Put on a shower cap. The heat from the shower and the moisture inside the cap will help to reconfigure her hair. In other words, her hair will absorb the moisture and it will more easily respond to her styling efforts. Styling should only take several minutes. More like fluff with the dryer and go. For Michelle and some of us with intensely curly/frizzy hair flat ironing the top layer of hair will be easier and gives the hair more shine.

Next time we'll talk about S-H-I-N-E!

Michelle and Melia Obama's Hairstyle

Do you want your hair to look like Michelle or Melia's hair everyday?
