StyleTap Releases Symbian Version

StyleTap Platform for Symbian OS is now available for download and purchase at the StyleTap website.

The Symbian version supports all Nokia smartphones running S60 3rd Edition, Sony-Ericsson devices running UIQ 3.0, and the new Nokia touch UI devices running S60 5th Edition. It includes support for hardware features such as screen rotation and the optical joystick on the Samsung i8510 smartphone, and introduces a new screen rendering capability that significantly improves the readability of the screen on QVGA (240x320) devices.

With this release, StyleTap-compatible applications can now run on all PalmOS devices, all Windows Mobile devices and all Symbian smartphones – more than any other type of mobile applications.

StyleTap for the iPhone Still in Progress

Interest in StyleTap for the iPhone and iPod touch continues to be high, and we've had numerous queries looking for an update. So far, nothing has changed – Apple continues with its unfortunate App Store policy, and we continue the development work on the iPhone version.

However, we can assure all who have asked about pricing – an iPhone version of StyleTap will definitely not be among the thousands of App Store offerings priced at $1...

StyleTap for the Palm Pre?

Since Palm's announcement of the Palm Pre and webOS, we have received many emails asking (and some begging) us to create a version of StyleTap for this new platform.

From Palm's initial public statements about the application interface, it seems unlikely that we would be able to create a version of StyleTap without some assistance from Palm to provide access to the C/C++ level of APIs we would need. However, until we see what actually gets shipped to customers, it's still too early to tell what level of APIs are going to be available.

While we continue to investigate the technical feasibility, we're also assessing if there will be an appropriate business case for creating a product. If you are interested in seeing a version of StyleTap for the Palm Pre, please let us know with a quick email to sales@styletap.com, but also let Palm know that you want to have your PalmOS apps running on this new device.

Update on StyleTap for iPhone

We say "thanks" to the MANY of you who have sent us emails and/or posted comments on blogs and websites expressing your interest in having hundreds of different Palm applications (from among the tens of thousands available) running on your iPhone. There have now been over 1 million views of the video we posted. We've not only heard from people who already have an iPhone, but we've heard from individuals, companies, and application developers who have told us that if they could run their critical Palm applications on it, they would buy iPhone(s) in a heartbeat.

As many of you know, when Apple introduced the Software Development Kit (SDK) for the iPhone, the accompanying legal agreement had clauses in it that expressly excluded the entire class of applications – emulators, virtual machines, scripting languages, interpreters – that enabled any type of non-native iPhone applications to be run. This excluded Java virtual machines, Python interpreters, Adobe Flash … and StyleTap Platform.

Now of course we didn't use the iPhone SDK to create the experimental version of StyleTap Platform that you see in the video, and in fact many people have created iPhone applications without using the SDK. The issue is that many people will only install applications on their iPhone through the Apple App Store in iTunes, and the only way to create such an application and have Apple approve it for sale through the App Store, is by using the iPhone SDK. We are continuing to try to work with Apple to find a way that would allow StyleTap to enable thousands of useful, and in many cases mission-critical, mobile applications to run on the iPhone.

So the bad news is that until Apple removes the legal roadblocks, we will not be able to provide a product that can be installed through the App Store onto a standard "off the shelf" iPhone. You can help us by making sure that Apple knows that you would like to see StyleTap as an application on the iPhone, and especially by making sure they know that having the ability to run your critical applications is a major factor in your decision whether or not to purchase an iPhone. If you have not already done so, you can provide your feedback to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

The good news is that we are actively continuing to develop a version of StyleTap CrossPlatform for the iPhone and iPod Touch. However, the SDK issue means that as it currently stands, the initial beta versions of StyleTap for the iPhone will be usable only on iPhones and iPod Touch devices that have had software modifications (a process known as "jailbreaking") allowing non-App Store applications to be installed. (Here our lawyer made us say: "This is provided for information only. StyleTap is not recommending, requesting or encouraging you to make any unauthorized modifications to your device. There are warranty, upgrade and usability issues with 'jailbroken' devices that you need to understand before you choose that approach.")

When will StyleTap for iPhone be available? Contrary to some erroneous posts to that effect on some blogs, we did not announce plans to release an iPhone version in July – we promised an update (which you're reading). We have not announced a release date for an iPhone version. We can assure you that we are actively working on it and that you'll be the first to know when we are ready to begin a beta program.

StyleTap Announces Plans for iPhone Version

StyleTap is officially planning to introduce a version of StyleTap CrossPlatform for the Apple iPhone smartphone and the iPod touch. As we are still working on a number of issues, such as where and how it will be marketed and sold, we expect to have further information available in early July 2008.

StyleTap personnel will also be attending the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, CA from June 9-13, and will be available to meet with mobile application developers who want to learn more about StyleTap for the Apple devices. Contact us to set up an appointment.

Status of StyleTap iPhone Experimental Version

Our recent posting of a video showing an experimental version of StyleTap running on an iPod Touch has been viewed over 700,000 times and generated a great deal of feedback and interest in a version of StyleTap for the Apple iPhone. We were particularly struck by the number of people who commented that the ability to run their Palm applications would definitely make them consider purchasing an iPhone.

Apple subsequently released their much-anticipated Software Development Kit (SDK), which answered some questions but also introduced some potential legal roadblocks which could impede our efforts to make a StyleTap iPhone/iPod Touch version available through official Apple channels. We are continuing to make good technical progress with the iPhone "experimental" version and are exploring various ways to bring it to market. We encourage everyone interested in seeing a version of StyleTap for the iPhone to let Apple know of your interest by sending feedback at http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html.

StyleTap Announces Symbian Version

StyleTap has announced a version of StyleTap (officially called "StyleTap CrossPlatform for Symbian OS") for smartphones running the Symbian OS. This new version is planned for release in the first quarter of 2008.

StyleTap CrossPlatform for Symbian OS will support Symbian smartphones based on UIQ 3 and S60 3rd Edition, which includes smartphone models from Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Motorola.

Although the product is planned for release early in 2008, the software is working now in "alpha" mode – most of the APIs are working, most applications are running well, and we're confident that the remaining technical work is all doable. Although it is our usual practice to issue announcements only when the release is available, we chose to announce this release in London at the Symbian Smartphone Show, where we have enjoyed the support and encouragement from many of the folks at Symbian and UIQ.

We also know, based on the constant queries about support for Symbian devices that come to us via email, that there is a great deal of interest out there in the community. For all you Symbian smartphone users: please do not send us emails asking to be a beta tester just yet – stay tuned to this blog and when we're ready to go, we'll tell you about it here.

The e-commerce section of the StyleTap website has been updated with a number of new capabilities:

Now Accepting PayPal

We've updated the e-commerce part of our website so that you can now use the convenience and security of Paypal to purchase copies of StyleTap.

Paypal can be used for both single copy purchases and multi-copy purchases using the License Manager.

Multi-Copy Purchases
Businesses, organizations, schools and hospitals can now purchase multiple copies of StyleTap Platform by creating a corporate account on our online e-commerce system. Multi-copy purchases can be paid by credit card, using PayPal, or a quote can be automatically generated for creating Purchase Orders. When purchases are made, a discount is automatically offered for orders of 20+ copies, with an additional discount for 100+ copies.

Resell StyleTap Platform
We have introduced a coupon system that makes it easier for application developers and electronic software distributors (ESDs) who want to resell StyleTap Platform on their own websites. After creating a corporate account and purchasing multiple copies of StyleTap Platform at the reseller discount levels, a reseller can receive a set of coupons (13-character codes), one for each unit purchased, that they give to their own customers as a "proof of purchase" when they purchase StyleTap Platform at the reseller's website. The customer comes to the Redeem Coupon page and enters their coupon and product key in exchange for a permanent registration key for their device.

Apologies for Blog Email Problems

Back in mid-July, something happened between Blogger and FeedBurner (the services we use for this blog), and you all received an email with an old post (from Oct 2006). Worse, it happened again a couple of days later.

Working with the helpful folk at FeedBurner, we couldn't immediately find a reason for the problem (although others reported the same mysterious behaviour on the forums), and so I turned off the email service for this blog.

Hopefully the problem has been fixed and so I've turned it back on with the sending of these several blog posts.

I apologize for the irritation and inconvenience of getting these spurious emails, and if they start happening again, I ask for your patience while we solve the problem.

StyleTap Platform Scanner Support Released

StyleTap has just released Version 1.1 of StyleTap Platform, which supports the barcode scanners integrated into the leading industrial handheld devices from Intermec and Motorola-Symbol.

The new release includes support for the de facto standard scanner API created by Symbol Technologies, which allows most barcode scanner applications written for older Symbol devices, such as the SPT1550 or SPT1800, to run unmodified on the newer Windows Mobile-based devices from Intermec (700, CN2B, CN3) or Symbol (MC50 and MC70).
