StyleTap Platform for Android release v0.8.015 is now available for download.

Recent releases include the following enhancements:

Support for Android 5 (Lollipop) devices with 2 GB of RAM or more
Enhanced ARMlet/PNOlet support removes restrictions allowing more Palm applications using ARMlets/PNOlets to run
Bypass the Bluetooth partner selection dialog when you know the Bluetooth address of the partner device, by explicitly adding the following directive to the StyleTapInit.ini file:

PartnerBTAddress=xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx;
Automatically redirect Palm serial traffic to Bluetooth, enabling use of Bluetooth-to-serial cables on peripheral devices with Palm applications hardcoded to use a serial cable, by adding the following directive to StyleTapInit.ini file:

AlwaysUseBluetoothSerial=yes;
If Palm alarms are not used, you can eliminate StyleTap override of screen lock by including following directive in StyleTapInit.ini file:

EnableScreenLock=yes;

Recent releases include numerous fixes:

Memory corruption problem when playing sounds or using Bluetooth

Bluetooth Support Added to StyleTap for Android

StyleTap^® Platform for Android™ v0.8.007 now supports Bluetooth via RFCOMM (serial over Bluetooth) when used through the standard Palm serial API.

This Bluetooth support is comparable to the Bluetooth support available in the Windows Mobile version of StyleTap. It enables Palm OS applications running under StyleTap to print to most Bluetooth printers supported by standard Palm print utilties, such as Stevens Creek PalmPrint and Bachmann PrintBoy. It also allows communication with GPS devices, while preserving the prior support for obtaining GPS NMEA strings from the Android Location Manager (see the Release Notes for details).

Release v0.8.007 also includes fixes for:

Error constructing the NMEA strings when the "system locale" was not English has been fixed.
Fix for getting keyboard input on some Motorola devices (e.g. Motorola Pro+)
Various fixes to support some applications (e.g. ChessMaster) reported by users

NOTE: Apple has not provided a public API for generic use with standard Bluetooth devices, so we remain unable to support Bluetooth on iPhone/iPad devices.

New Functionality

Added "Export Databases" function to StyleTap Launcher "Options" menu: Copies all Palm databases (both .prc and .pdb files) to /Android/data/com.StyleTap.StyleTap/export folder so that they will be visible when connected to desktop. This allows databases to be copied/backed up to the desktop file system, where they can also then be processed by desktop applications. After processing, updated databases can be placed in /Android/data/com.StyleTap.StyleTap/import folder to be re-imported when the device is disconnected and StyleTap is started again.

The Export Databases function can also be called from your application via the StyleTap API.

StyleTap Platform for Android™ is now available for download and purchase at the StyleTap website!

We are very happy to finally announce the immediate availability of a full implementation of StyleTap Platform that runs on Android-based smartphones and tablets.

StyleTap Platform for Android supports standard features that include TCP/IP networking, audio recording and playback, the ability to use the multi-gigabyte storage as a virtual memory card, and cut/copy/paste of text between native and Palm OS applications. It also provides innovative capabilities such as giving Palm OS applications access to the Android GPS by providing location information in standard GPS NMEA format.

With this release, StyleTap-compatible applications can now run on all Palm OS devices, all Windows Mobile devices, Symbian smartphones, Apple iPhone^®, iPad^® and iPod touch devices^®, and now Android devices – more than any other type of mobile applications.

StyleTap Platform for iPhone v0.9.011 is now available for download through Cydia and provides the following:

Support for iPad and iPhone OS 4 (iOS4).
The removal of the feature which allows a vCard to be inserted into the iPhone address book. The iPhone function which StyleTap was using to do this is not included in iPhone OS 4. Instead of inserting the vCard in the iPhone address book, a file with a "vcf" file extension will be created in the StyleTapExport subdirectory on the virtual card.
A fix to the WebTools utility so that prc and pdb files with the file extension in uppercase (i.e. "PRC", "PDB") can be installed in memory.
The "Find" function can now be invoked using a menu option in the StyleTap Launcher.
Various fixes to problems reported by users.

StyleTap Platform for iPhone v0.9.010 Released

StyleTap Platform for iPhone® v0.9.010 is now available for download through Cydia and provides the following:

An updated WebTools utility that should eliminate the initial "hang" problem.
Due to popular demand, the iPhone keyboard will no longer automatically pop up when a field is given focus. However, when the user presses the keyboard button, StyleTap will still attempt to scroll the screen down to show the field if necessary.
The "Quit" and "Menu" buttons have been moved down to increase the distance between these buttons and the application window.
EvtResetAutoOffTimer has been implemented.
Fix to display problem in some applications (BackupMan).
Fix to problem in some HandDBase applications.
Certain iPhone models do not provide country information and this was causing a crash on startup. This has been fixed.

NOTE: If you already downloaded the initial version of StyleTap, by simply running Cydia again, it will show this version as an available update on the "Change” button. Installing the new version of StyleTap should preserve your registration code and any applications and databases that you have installed.

Questions About Supporting Android Devices

Immediately after we announced the iPhone version, we received a small avalanche of emails asking, pleading, demanding and even begging that we create a version of StyleTap Platform for Android devices.

We continue to evaluate the technical and business case for supporting devices running Android, but we are not yet ready to make any public commitment.

However, we can say that we are very encouraged by two things:

The improvements in the Android NDK make it more feasible for a complex application like StyleTap to work properly under Android
The recent efforts by Google and others to reverse the fragmentation of the Android market into vendor-specific implementations that are incompatible with each other.

We appreciate that there is significant interest in a version of StyleTap for Android, and we will keep you updated here on the blog as to our progress and decisions.

StyleTap Supports Windows Mobile 6.5 Devices

We now have devices running Windows Mobile 6.5 in-house, and we're happy to report that, in general, StyleTap runs fine on Windows Mobile 6.5. As is our usual experience with a new class of Windows Mobile devices, we expect we will need to add minor fixes to fully support specialized hardware keys and/or screens.
