Louis Vuitton has always been a mastermind in combining tradition and modernity. Marc Jacobs Spring 2001 show featuring Stephen’s Sprouse graffiti has been a turning point for the brand’s perception and heritage. Although Masking, Modifying or altering the Monogram canvas was a no no clause in Jacobs’ contract, he went for it anyway and the rest is history.

A Marc Jacobs show always catches the attention. This time, the American designer has struck again with seventies and romanticism silhouettes remixed with a manga touch.

The hoodie Seen at Tommy Hilfiger or at the Yeezy show, shows up at Marc Jacobs decorated with patches, designed in collaboration with the artist Julie Verhoeven. The british illustrator has worked with Jacobs on his Louis Vuitton Spring Summer 2002 show.

The collection counts Snake coats, see through laces mini dress, metallic cigarette pants, sequins embroidered bags but there were also some familiar pieces like the khaki green jackets, that have very similar designs to marc by marc jacobs 2002 / 2003 era.

But the buzz was not about the clothes it was about the multicolored dreadlocks created by Jena Counts and styled by Guido Palau that the girls were sporting.

In a pastel variation of colors, these dreadlocks hairstyle evolved as the looks came out, matching remarkably most of the time the outfits.

Done in a playful artistic way, it didn’t prevent people to attack Marc Jacobs accusing him of cultural appropriation. When asked about the inspiration Jacobs and Palau talked about the street, Boy George, without referring to black culture.

Jacobs defended himself at first saying that he sees people, not race.

“[To] all who cry ‘cultural appropriation’ or whatever nonsense about any race or skin color wearing their hair in any particular style or manner – funny how you don’t criticize women of color for straightening their hair,” the designer said.

“I respect and am inspired by people and how they look. I don’t see color or race – I see people. I’m sorry to read that so many people are so narrow minded … Love is the answer. Appreciation of all and inspiration from anywhere is a beautiful thing. Think about it,” he wrote on his instagram.

he Then issued an apology.

“I have read all your comments … and I thank you for expressing your feelings. I apologize for the lack of sensitivity unintentionally expressed by my brevity. I wholeheartedly believe in freedom of speech and freedom to express oneself though art, clothes, words, hair, music…EVERYTHING.
Of course I do “see” color but I DO NOT discriminate. THAT IS A FACT!”

“Please continue to express your feelings freely but do it kindly. Nothing is gained from spreading hate by name calling and bullying.”

But the issue is a cultural problem, race discrimination and inequalities are a reality in America which make people even more sensitive. In October 2009 When Jacobs decided to have the girls wearing afro wigs at his Louis Vuitton Spring Summer 2010 show in Paris, referencing Japanese Manga travelers no one barked at him.

Comics in France for example, have at multiple occasions and in recent years painted their faces in black for stand up comedy without receiving any backlash.

The word in the street is that the MJ business is not what it used to be, with rumors that LVMH wants to sell the Marc Jacobs brand. LVMH then denied the report. The designer only own 2 % of his company, as well as Robert Duffy.

After the show even before the backlash, the tension was already palpable as journalist were denied any interview with Jacobs.

Unlike many designers, Alexander Wang didn’t completely opt to present a see now buy now collection. Only his designs from his partnership with Adidas, were available for purchase immediately at the after party and the day after the show at three NYC locations, as well as in London and Tokyo.

Tonight a strong california vibe was in the house, almost like if a surf convention took place at the pier 94. Girls were wearing cropped cotton shirts with criss cross straps around the waist, paired with cotton stripes button down mini skirts. There were also some Rose printed blouses, summer dresses with lace trim, distressed denim, scuba inspired tops, a leopard coat, a sequins dress and some amazing cotton mini dresses sometimes with english embroideries worm with fringe sandals or boots. The few guys sported printed tees and sweatshirts.

Wang describes his collaboration with Adidas as organic as it can get, being a total sneaker head, he jumped on the opportunity. His love for sneakers lead him to design dresses directly inspired by sneakers for his Spring 2015 collection, one in particular was inspired by the iconic Adidas Stan Smith shoe.

The collection was unveiled at the end of the show, after a short teaser film played in the runway backdrop. With not less than 70 models all wearing black. The pieces are not so different from Adidas actual designs, Wang tweaked the 3 leaf logo and put it upside down as well as incorporating his bar code AW signature.

Front row Madonna was already wearing a track jacket from the collab (the lookbook features her son Rocco), her daughter Lourdes was sitting Tyga and Kylie Jenner, Rami Malek, Nicki Minaj, Pamella Anderson and her son Dylan Jagger Lee.

The after party was legendary as usual, featuring a McDonald truck, a mini 7-Eleven convenience store, a Nars Cosmetics claw machine and featured performance by Desiigner, Korean rapper CL and Travis scott.

In an era of instant gratification, it became evident for Hilfiger to bypass the seasons concept by offering for purchase the entire Tommy x Gigi collection immediately as the show starts.

No need to wait 6 months before getting that particular show piece.

If it wasn’t enough for TH fans, Hilfiger staged his fashion show on Pier 16 as an amusement park complete with rides, mini burgers, games, nails station, temporary tattoos, and a pop shop.

While 1000 fans attended the show on Friday, all New Yorkers had the chance to hang out at Tommy’s pier on Saturday, enjoying the same perks, plus a meet and greet with Gigi Hadid herself.

An intrepid innovator, Tommy made headlines in 2009 for being one of the few designers live streaming their shows. At his Fall 2013 show, he introduced the “see now / buy now” concept on select pieces which was imitated by many brands the next season.

“It’s all about the democratization of fashion, reaching our customer directly and opening a dialogue is exactly what’s it’s all about. “ said Tommy.

Backstage Tommy and Gigi, interviewed by journalists, were ecstatic about their collaboration, laughing and finishing each sentences.

“Gigi is at the center stage of the collection, she is the Tommy girl and what you will see on the runway, Gigi designed it with me.”

The idea was to take TH iconic symbols, his American classic pieces and rework them. The opening silhouette worn by Gigi was the perfect ‘off-duty’ model look, a military navy jacket paired with leather jeans, white tank top and compass printed scarf. The nylon bomber jacket featuring a military patch as well as a casual long wool cardigan will be crowd favorites. The collection ranges from $45 (Gigi’s white tank top), to the most expensive pieces ranging up to $700 for a leather jacket, all available at tommy.com

Will this new show format shake the fashion industry and change the way things use to be done? Only time will tell, but Tommy’s shift highlights that the future really is now.

For the occasion , 30 handbag designers have designed a total of 87 limited-edition bags for the 5th avenue store.

From Gucci’s Dionysus GG Supreme Shoulder Bag, Prada, Proenza Schouler, Bottega Veneta, to Fendi, Stella McCartney and Loewe, the special-edition bags are New York-inspired to pair with the new space. Very limited some styles only count 30 pieces. The pieces retail from $295 for a Gucci cell phone case to $23,000 for a Givenchy style.

Bottega Veneta reworked its signature weaving technique to mimic New York’s gridded skyline, Proenza Schouler made a graphic update to its new Hava top handle bag, with contrasting diagonal black stripes.

“The Hava top handle is part of the new generation of Proenza Schouler bags and is an evolution of past iconic bags. It twists, subvert and elevates the house’s codes to create something that feels special and right for today.” Said Proenza’s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of their design

“The exclusive bag created for Bergdorf Goodman is rendered in mixed exotic stripes, inlaid with leather and suede and stripped of all excess. The edges are left raw and hand-painted to emphasize the bag’s lightness and handcrafted quality. The acclaimed french actress played the James Bond girl in “Spectre”, a bad girl in Mission Impossible and won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013 for her role in “Blue is the Warmest Color”.  Her next movie appearance will be in “It’s Only the End of the World,” directed by Xavier Dolan, who has fronted two men campaigns for Vuitton.

The label’s fragrance ads are due to break in October magazine issues and the Sept. 15 editions of daily newspapers around the globe.

Since October 2015, following Raf Simons Dior’s departure, Balenciaga separated from famed designer Alexander Wang, Lanvin from Albert Elbaz, Calvin Klein from Francisco Costa, Saint Laurent from Hedi Slimane.  Berluti, Brioni,  Canali, Cerruti, Costume National, Diane von Furstenberg, Dunhill, Ferragamo,  Leonard, Smalto, Valentino, Zegna … all have appointed a new designer as well.

On 20 July, the American label Oscar de la Renta announced that Peter Copping was leaving after less than two years as the head designer. The same day, rumors immediately denied by the brand, insinuated that Nicolas Ghesquiere was leaving Louis Vuitton, despite his contract binding him to the fashion powerhouse until 2018. Rumors that were taken seriously given the poor results in Louis Vuitton ready to wear sales since Ghesquiere started in 2014. Berluti is rumored to be tapping Haider Ackermann which has not been confirmed yet.

A week later, Carven decided to let go Designer Barnabe Hardy. On August 2, Calvin Klein confirmed via his Instagram account that Raf Simons is taking over the artistic direction of all its multiple lines.

Glamour, freedom, metallic dresses, feathers and sequins can define Michael Kors Fall 2016 show. Entitled “Instaglam”, the collection delivered by the billionaire designer was full of “instantly” recognizable iconic references. Think Romy Schneider, or Allie Mcgrath in the 60’s.

“I think this collection is really my inspiration to individual style. When people say who is the Michael Kors woman? We have so many different kinds of clients, we have teenagers, we have women in their 70’s, we have petite women, we have tall women, from around the globe. what do they have in common? they inspire me, they enjoy fashion, they understand the joy of dressing up. They’re Catherine Deneuve, Alexa Chung, or Blake Lively.”

“Personal style is about breaking the rules. These women are all rules breakers, it’s like Wearing tweed with flowers, metallic gold dresses for daytime, wearing a sweatshirt for a black tie party. The majestic St. Bartholomew’s Church on Park Avenue was the backdrop for the Alexander Wang Fall 2016 show. On the runway, the looks featured bold words like “Girls” on black tights, “Tender” on a mohair sweater, ” Strict” on a woolly hat., and “strict” which is the opposite of these heroine chic silhouette, that had a hint of morosity. Tailored miniskirt, little skimpy dress and faux snake striped skirt, studded with nails, rings, zips and other mini- brackets. Paired with beautiful accessories , although commercial, as these boots and chromium studded bags. Alexander Wang who celebrated his 10 years success last season, has revolutionized the downtown style – this week just proves he’s a talented supplier of fashion gadgets.

Redken global creative director Guido Palau created a 70s-inspired rock-and-roll look, complete with cuts and color on several models, at Alexander Wang’s Fall/Winter 2016 show.

“Alexander Wang this season is about emphasizing individuality, character, and acknowledging every type of woman, whether boyish or feminine. The show has something for every girl and woman to relate to which is very inspiring. There are different characters, different kinds of beauty in one show. We cut and colored some of the models, creating fringes on some, and bleached or colored the hair bright orange on others. A lot of the shapes we created are based on the 70’s – a feather cut shag. I shampooed and conditioned the hair with Redken’s new Beach Envy Volume (available in salons March 2016), which gives the hair a great beachy texture. I emphasized the natural hair by letting it air dry, then spraying hair once dry with Redken wax blast 10. For the show’s look, I didn’t want luminous hair; it’s got to feel cool.” – Guido

Create the look:

The beautiful capes, dresses punctuated by skiers drawn with Legos , the retro chic countersigns the inspiration of this excellent collection. The direct sources : the outfits created by Lacoste for the French ski team in the late 1960s. New York Fashion Week started yesterday with Kanye West’s collection with Adidas. The rapper chose to present Yeezy season 3 at Madison Square Garden along his seventh album and his first video game featuring his mom.

The event was unique, for its size and the mix of genres, fashion and music. More than 15,000 people made the trip to attend the third Yeezy collection, and listen for the first time at Yeezus new album, The Life of Pablo.

True to its marketing savvy and his passion for new forms of expression, only the legendary venue Madison Square Garden could host such an event. For over an hour, the 38 years artist played his new album, wearing a red “Life of Pablo” sweatshirt and black cap, while in the middle of the stage a performance by Vanessa Beecroft, 200 models motionless presenting “Yeezy season 3“.

Each models were piled to each other, without expressions, looking like a refuge camp scene. While the menswear is pretty much similar to the past seasons, the womenswear is mostly made of knits,colorful and athletic inspired.

Suddenly, three supermodels appear and break the silence, it’s Naomi Campbell, Veronica Webb and Liya Kebede.

During the show, Kanye, being himself engaged in various discussion with the audience. When thanking Adidas for supporting in him, a guest shot “F*ck Nike”, which was enough to set up Kanye. He responded “What you just said” seven time followed by “Y’all not saying it loud enough I can’t hear you” which resulted of the arena shooting slurs against Nike. West has reportedly left the brand on bad terms, in 2013.

Between songs, Kanye praised either his best selling shoes or his wife Kim Kardashian, which was sitting in the Audience with her entire family North, Kris, Caitlyn, Kylie, Kendall Jenner, Kourtney and Klhoe Kardashian sandwiched by Anna Wintour, 50 cents, Lamar Odom, Jay Z and even Lil’ Kim.

“Ye” presented his seventh album as “the best album in the world” before showing a teaser of his first ever video game entitled “Only One: The Game” , whose heroine is none other than his mother, who tragically died in 2007. One can see Donda West, riding a winged horse through clouds before growing wings herself.

“My dream, I said to Anna Wintour, is to be the creative director of Hermès,” he launched to the public. “How? It’s a bad idea ? “Was it fun by answering a spectator whistling. In one of his songs broadcast yesterday, Kanye is seeking the White House in 2020.

While Air France’s leaders are making headnews around the world, Karl Lagerfeld paints the majesty and opulence at Cambon terminal. Upon boarding, transient present a new suit version, aerodynamic, 100% embroidered without visible pocket or logo, or any CC monogram buttons. It’s refreshing to see that the successful model is still grounded, clear minded has she admitted that she has “let the negativity get to” her.

Gigi, who has shared the Chanel Spring 2015 runway with the iconic Gisele Bundchen, walked this season for DVF, Tommy Hilfiger, Jeremy Scott, Versace to name a few … and has accomplished in two years the impossible for a new face model. She fronts this season Tom Ford’s Velvet Orchid Fragrance, Max Mara, H&M x Balmain, Balmain ad campaigns. Her first magazine cover was shot by Bruce Weber for Carine Roitfeld CR Fashion Book, and many other covers followed. On top of that the malibu bombshell is the face of a beauty brand, Maybeline New York, which is every models goal.

While it’s shocking to hear that people would criticize her slim figure, the modeling industry has also specific standard that pushes young models to malnourished themselves in order to fit into the “model criteria”. We’ve seen so many underweight models and heard so many stories on how models get to that point.

But it would be interesting to see how the new french law banning models who have a BMI under 18 will be enforced during Paris Fashion Week.
