1950 Ford Thunderbirds, Flames on Heels, bumper bangs, the stuff of fashion past. Ahead of the curve fashion house Prada takes us on a style blast from the past with the their Spring/Summer 2012 collection.

With a slice of classic Americana, Prada makes us long for the good ole Happy Days. Shot by Steven Miesel, Prada’s vision of spring is going to be spent at the car hop, pumping gas in your T-Bird all while rocking classic cat-eye glasses, aged floral prints, flamed heels and head scarves to keep your coif in tact.

Meet Karima Renee, Fashion Stylist & Curve Champion

Who are you? Your Age? From?

Karima Renee, queen of all things feminine and glamorous. I live in a platform shoe, love anything vintage and most things sweet. I could probably live off ice cream, cupcakes and macaroons. Oh yea and I’m natural.

I’m 27 from Philly but my heart will forever be in Brooklyn

What do you do?

I’m a Fashion Stylist & founder of Skinny Minority a Fashion Lifestyle Brand. Our niche is curvy and plus size women. I’m also a part time fashion blogger, but I’m really just a stylist who blogs.

What dreams are you working toward?

In 2012 we are working on becoming more of a lifestyle brand, composing Fashion, Fitness and Food. We don’t believe in forfeiting food for fashion however, in order for women to live their best lives and be fabulous you must be fit. Glamour comes from the inside out.

We are launching our online boutique this March focusing on fashionable Workout Tees. The shirt will celebrate a healthy body image for curvy/plus fashionistas. We’re looking to have a full line of fitness apparel by the end of the year. Then after that a calorie conscious desert truck!!!

What motivates you to succeed?

Fashion Editor Nina Garcia once said that “whatever you do in life should have meaning, it should touch the lives of others.” That statement really made me think and from that point on I wanted my career in fashion to influence girls. I’m motived through my readers, every time someone says “you have motived me” or “what you are doing is inspiring” that solidifies that I’m doing the right thing.

Everything we do at Skinny Minority is for the benefit of the women and girls who support us. Skinny Minority is for the girl that loves fashion and maybe even needs to have more self love. I’m always motived knowing we are the consumer.

What has been your biggest obstacle?

This is a loaded question. I’ve had people attempt to sue me, I’ve been disappointed, people have stepped down from Skinny Minority and I’ve even had to deal with fraudulent companies. But in all these things there has been a lesson that has prepared me for the next chapter. I don’t like to focus on the negative, so I won’t elaborate on the incidents I stated above.

However, I think the biggest struggle for any entrepreneur is funding. Skinny Minority is funded solely thru myself and my immediate family. Being an entrepreneur means making a lot of sacrifices and being 100% committed, especially financially. I tell myself “It will pay off, the luxuries will come later.”

What advice would you give other young women?

1. Start your dream today
2. Read anything/watch all things Kelly Cutrone
3. Be Patient
4. Never give up

We live in a marriage obsessed culture! It seems that in any good relationship, marriage is the barometer of true success. You’ve been with your fella for a few years and watch the inquires start to pour in, “Soooooo, when are you two getting hitched?” What is this, the Spanish Inquisition? It seems that any woman who isn’t fawning over a white dress or a deep desire to walk down isle is some sort of anomaly.

Classic case in point: Oprah Winfrey. The mega mogul has been in a “successful” (I added quotes cause I don’t really know her business like that) relationship for 26 years with her boyfriend Stedman Graham. Steadman has been a constant staple in Oprah’s life and career and over the course of their relationship, their marital status (or lackof) has been the subject of much debate.

People have accussed Oprah of being selfish, frigid, putting her career before marriage and that Stedman should have moved on a long time ago. At a recent talk in India, Oprah put it plainly stating that she has never been the “marrying kind” and that if she and Stedman were to have married they would have been divorced ages ago.

“I think that had we gotten married we probably would have been divorced by now. And he would agree. I really am my own woman and I don’t really conform very well to other people ideas about who and what I should be and being married calls for some conformity.” ~ Oprah

As a proponent of do what you want, I have to wonder what is the big deal with Oprah’s unmarried status is. And why does a woman who never decides to marry scare the beejeebus out of us? Oprah has it all, a widely astronomical career, millions of dollars, the love and adoration of millions and a man, yet we continue to fixate on why she never let Stedman put a ring on it.

According to Pew Research Center, marriage is on a stiff decline with less than half of Americans being married. Am I the only one unfazed by this statistic? With more and more women not walking down the isle in favor of not settling, long-term partnerships and singlehood, why is marriage still perceived as the end all be all?

As an unmarried woman I can honestly say that the prospect that I may never marry or met a person I want to marry, doesn’t send me into convulsions. Clearly, Oprah decided early on that marriage was not for her. Shouldn’t we applaud her discernment or right to choose her lifestyle.

With the decline of marriage, it seems that more women are identifying with not being “the marrying kind” as well.

What are your thoughts?

Are you the marrying kind? Is marriage your end all be all?

Meet Minah Banks! Writer, Mentor & Woman Who Werks!

Who are you? Your Age? From?

Hey! I am Minah Banks. I am 29 years old. I am from Long Beach, CA. I am a true California girl, but in my head, I am an East Coaster.

What do you do?

What don’t I do? LOL. During the day I am an Admissions Counselor at a California State University. I am also the Praise and Worship leader at a college bible study on the same campus. I write, write, write. It’s my motto to educate, empower and enrich the lives of young women throughout my sphere of influence.

I mentor young women through many different avenues such as my blog simplyminah.com, where I am the most transparent I have ever been in life.

What dreams are you working toward?

I think I dream pretty big. If I can think it I can do it. Currently I am finishing up my 1st book entitled The Collection.

I am also working towards launching a campaign called simplyME! simplyME is a campaign designed to educate, empower and enrich the lives of young women16-24 in the areas of: Academia, Career and Wealth Building, Self-Awareness and Social Consciousness. The campaign will seek to host workshops, seminars and mentoring events throughout Los Angeles County’s urban communities and beyond.

What motivates you to succeed?

I know that I was not given these dreams and visions to just sit on them. What motivates me to succeed is I know that when I step out on my dreams and take risks, lives will be changed.

What has been your biggest obstacle?

Overcoming doubt. When you dream big, sometimes it is difficult to grasp the fact that your dreams can actually come true.

What advice would you give other women?

1. Love God, He loves you
2. Always, always pursue your dreams
3. Don’t be afraid to be alone. Alone ≠ lonely
4. It’s OK to say No sometimes
5. Believe in yourself, FOREVER
