Designer Spotlight: Kara Mann

Lately I have been inspired by designer, Kara Mann. She is a Chicago based designer and produces fabulous work in the windy city. After familiarizing myself with her work, I realized she was the designer behind some of my favorite spaces and I had no idea, take a look!

The butterfly sculpture by Paul Villinski is breathtaking, this truly is beautiful work. The silver-gold tones of the mirrors and shagreen-like bedside tables add a little shimmer. The shimmer along with the taupe color of the bed makes this room feel ethereal and glamorous.

Napa's Own Hot Hotel: Hotel Yountville

Fall is in the air a bit here in Texas we have dropped about 20 degrees which is great! It finally feels like fall will soon be approaching us. I stumped upon this gem of a hotel and felt that I needed to share it because it's a getaway worth dreaming about, Hotel Yountville in Napa Valley. Even as a California native a retreat like this seems remarkable and I can't wait to go someday. I am adding it to my bucket list!

Who said modular walls were just for commercial applications. Currently, I have been loving them in residential spaces.

Bedroom Walls

Great way to accent a fireplace wall.

I loved this particular pattern for it's retro appeal.

Instead of decorative tile - modular panels are an edgy alternative.

Or for a focal wall in a dining, breakfast, media or theatre room.

Inspiration Behind My Blog Design

This DVF Summer 2011 ad was the inspiration behind my newly designed blog.

I find fashion to be a great source when seeking inspiration for designing an interior. Fashion reflects the same elements that interior design does such as: line, form, color, shape and texture. I loved the color combination and the clean lines of this garment. The ad also is a reflection of the young modern women representing my readers and myself. What is your inspiration?? Go Seek It!

The design trend for me right now is, horizontal stripes. Horizontal stripes on a wall is visually stimulating because it carries your eye from one end of the room to the other. It can also make a small room appear wider and larger.

I love the idea of just applying the horizontal stripes to a headboard wall in a bedroom, seen in the picture above. By simply applying hand painted or striped wall covering to a headboard wall, can make a bedroom seem more dramatic and sophisticated.

A Praise-Worthy Kitchen

This kitchen exemplifies hospitality. It is so warm and inviting making it ideal for entertaining. I love the rich copper hues incorporated throughout. The sink countertop is actually copper that radiates a golden glow. The ogee shaped ceramic tile backsplash in hues of cream and gold are exquisite. The cherry accent island in conjunction with ivory stained cabinetry harmonize beautifully.

Just a close up of this amazing ogee tile.

To further paint the copper story and if the sink wall backslash wasn't enough this backsplash tile is even better!

These copper tiles were custom made by Artistic Tile ranging in tones and shades of our glistening hue, copper. The beautiful Jerusalem Gold floors complement the tile backsplash entirely.

The breakfast nook. A great common place right off everyone's favorite room in the house, the kitchen. Since guests tend to flock to and socialize in the kitchen when entertaining having this gathering place is ideal! It's ideal not only for accommodating guests, but everyday living as well.

I love how this entertaining kitchen gets a bit "edgy" with the incorporation of these hand-blown glass pendants.

The butlery fully equipped to store your party and everyday dining essentials. I admire how these copper tones are repeated here with the ginger colored countertops.

The bar has lit glass-front cabinets with mirrored interiors and mirrored backsplash. The mirror applications are used to reflect light into the pantry.

If your anything like myself, a bit of a wine-o, this floating wine rack system is a must for hosting a warm gathering.

I fell in love when I stumpled upon this powder room. The wall covering is absoluletly exqusite. I love the greek key inspired vanity hardware as well. The danity sconces flanking the mirror make this powder truly uniquie it's rare to see smaller sconces like this in a powder bath. In this space your eye is drawn up with the elongated mirror and sconces mounted up high make the ceilings feel even higher. Hope this inspired you as much as it did me! Happy Tuesday! Shortly I will be lake house bound...Seattle, WA here I come!

I love how the space captures the natural colors of the beach and ocean through texture, color and pattern. I enjoyed how the peacock teal is incorporated into the mix of these neutrals...I am a sucker for high contrast.

I couldn't help but look twice a this adorable breakfast room. My friends know I love the color coral and this settee looks so fresh in this setting. This bright colored settee is toned down with these stunning chairs upholstered in an animal-inspired print creating a nice balance of color. Did I mention I love the Eero Saarinen white lacquer pedestal table? Breakfast Anyone?

Room Of The Week: Sheer Symmetry

I chose this space for the room of the week because of it's conclusive symmetry. It's fresh and well balanced. Maybe after a long week, balance, is what I am lacking. Symmetry is so important in design not only does symmetry make for a good design, but it plays an important role on the psyche and keeping one centered. The simple horizontal lines of the wall and drapery is the backdrop for accentuating the curvature of the furniture lines in the forefront. Don't you feel more balanced by looking at this space? I am currently loving graphic painted floors. I was allured by the chevron patterned floor Mary McDonald designed for a home office on Bravo's Million Dollar Decorators. Who would have thought that a loud patterned floor could look so tasteful and elegant. I am eagerly waiting to get my hands on some floors to paint. Any takers?

A Mimosas & Monograms Shower

Room of the Week: A Simply Modern Bath

Modern Simplicity is the perfect way to describe this space. I chose this particular bath because I was enthused by it's elegance and modernity. The clean lines and white Carrera marble chair rail are so fitting for a bath. I admire the placement of the bath tub right in the middle of the space. The bath tub is definitely the focal point here. I think this is a nice approach, treat your tub as if it was a piece of art. The tub is offset with an exquisite mosaic border emphasizing it's profound placement. The addition of a round end table to the side of the tub is ideal. The straight lines of the chrome light fixture are fitting to the space. This bathroom reflects the design style of Barbara Barry, one of my design icons. In my opinion, the Barbara Barry style is exemplified by the use of clean lines, dark woods paired with a neutral like white and a soft accent of color.

What makes this bath so luxurious? The contrast of the dark walnut wood and white Carrera marble. I just love it! High contrast paired with a soft blue is so soothing. Simple and refined is what this bath is all about.

I am usually all about color. But, in this space I am appreciating the black and white artwork- it works great with this simple color palette. I love the walnut console displaying those fantastic opaque white canisters. I must find some of those! The window seat is perfect and balances the space nicely. The window seat is flanked by floor-to-ceiling cabinets with glass panels lined in shirred linen. The built-in cabinets house a washer & dryer which is such a practical idea.

I love having a display cabinet in a bath. This cabinet can allow you to get creative with how and what you can display in it! Accessorize with some monogrammed towels, apothecary jars filled with bath salts, bar soaps etc...just make sure it always looks accessorized because it is visible to everyone! : )

Room of the Week: Funky Foyer

I love this foyer. This entry does scream fem., but everyone can appreciate a little pink...right? The delicate details, and splashes of modern art make this space refined and not overly girly. The tasteful vignette created here includes: a bench with a gold tea table and adjacent stool and miniature slipper chair. This is a very unexpected cluster but elegant and innovative.

The bordered stair runner suggests a tailored look. The border combined with it's neutral tones can enhance a dull stairwell. The neutral tones of the runner look great against the hot pink stool upholstery. Note: continuing your color scheme throughout your space is important (stick to your theme). The subtle hints of gold and pink are even carried upstairs through elegant artwork.

Just a little fem is all you need to funk-ify your foyer.

Cruisin' Ralph Lauren Style

It's that time of year.... Cruise Season. This is the time of year when the snow birds leave their cold climates and flock to warm weather. You fashionistas may also know what Cruise season means...(you guessed it) Cruise Wear. This is one of my most favorite times of the year. It marks the transition from drab/dull winter wear to the first glimpse of spring-like colors and patterns. Gets me all excited for Spring clothes.

The yacht design industry is bigger than you probably would of imagined! Extravagant yachts with exquisite home decor are becoming more of the norm, these days. A family friend of ours, Bob Williams, owner/furniture designer of Bausman & Co. spends most of his time designing custom furniture pieces for these yachts. Marina was just debuted by Oceania Cruises and was designed by Susan Bednar Long of S.B. Long Interiors. For this cruise ship she partnered up with Ralph Lauren Home to create this masterpiece on water.

J.Lo & Marc Anthony's Gatsby Manor Gone Glam

"J.Lo and Marc Anthony have recently transformed their Long Island Gatsby manor into a glamorous silver-screened setting fit for family living", says Vogue Living. J.Lo is one of my favorite celebrity muses! Ok, maybe it's fair to say she is one of my idols. It's always interesting to go backstage and see the beautiful homes of these awesome celebs. J.Lo and Marc Anthony's Long Island home was one I was enamored by. The couple needed to make their newly remodeled home family-friendly. The outcome of their home was great. It's family-friendly, but doesn't sacrifice the portrayal of the glamorous lifestyles they lead. The house represents a cohesive balance of Glam and Fam. Check it out!

OMG...I am loving this beautifully sculptured dress. It is to die for! J.Lo looks amazing of course.

Unfortunately... I didn't come across any pictures of the Master Bedroom. Hope you enjoyed this backstage pass.

I am currently loving these repetitious rugs. I have always been fascinated with Kyle Bunting rugs. I was first introduced to them when I worked at the Trammel-Gagne showroom in Seattle, WA about 3 years ago. Kyle Bunting Rugs is an Austin based company. Their rugs are hand crafted and each piece of cow hide is intricately cut and applied into these exquisite patterns. They offer a wide range of patterns...these are just two I am currently loving.

Room Of The Week: A Moorish Bath

I couldn't help but make this inviting bath the room of the week! I don't know if it's just that it's Friday and there is nothing I want more than a nice soak after a long week. Whatever it was, this welcoming tub got me! I was instantly drawn to the exotic Walker Zanger Moorish-influenced decorative tile applied floor-to-ceiling a unique application and very striking. The Victoria + Albert slipper tub is exceptional (don't you just want to dive in?)

House Beautiful

I love this vanity. The arched detail is exquisite, so unique. I have never seen a vanity quite like this. I love the concept of having open and closed storage, keeps the interest. Having the open storage allows you to add a splash of color with the lavender towels, or whatever your color scheme may be for a very neutral bath scheme. Hope you enjoyed this!

Penthouse Perfection: Schlegel's W-Dallas Penthouse

This W-Dallas Victory Park penthouse is the home to Dallas locals: Kari and Kirby Schlegel. The penthouse is actually one large 12,200 square foot space. Architect Lionel Morrison had the idea to split the space into two seperate apartments (His and Hers) with a central "grand salon." Designer Jan Showers was called on board to explore the masculine and feminine sides of designing these two seperate apartments. She did a great job representing the brother and sister's personal styles.

HERS: Kari's feminine side is defined by lots of color, ladylike patterns, accents of Murano glass, and a baby grand piano. Her apartment also incorporates more outdoor space and a fantastic view of downtown.

HIS: What makes Kirby's side masculine- media room for watching sports and movies, guest room and adjoining lounge, floor-to-ceiling blackout drapery, office to display his many sports collections, and workout room.

Room Of The Week: The Subtle Richness Of Greige

This Bedroom has placed itself into the Room of the Week category. The monochromatic color palette of griege has set the standard for making greige the new beige. I love the simplicity of this space. I usually adore color in any space. But, I love the subtleness this room possesses. The head board shape is incredible it is upholstered in a basic plain weave fabric making it a little more casual. The white-washed furniture pieces compliment nicely. The table lamp is stunning (I would love to have one!). Drapery panels are simple- yet add to the elegance of the space. Nothing like a greige and off-white color palette to achieve a fresh and refined look. Enjoy.

Fun Finds: Monogrammed Linens

Another snow day = time to blog. I came across this and wanted to share it with you because it was such a "Fun Find." If you are in the market for some fabulous monogrammed linens - Leotine Linens is great!

Love this one. The matching bolsters with the monogrammed Euro gives this bed a clean tailored look.

They even carry fabulous quilts as shown above. Get a quilt, some monogrammed shams and bedspread and you have achieved this look.

This shows you the variety of detail Leotine offers. Unique scrolls acting as borders makes this one very different from the rest.

Love this tone-on tone look for a little girls room. Just precious.

Currently Loving: A Soothing Palette Hamptons Style

I am a huge fan of the neutral palette used in interiors- it has become such a popular trend. The soothing palette of this Long Island Hamptons-styled home is a paragon to accomplishing a neutral palette. I couldn't help but be inspired when I received the February issue of Traditional Home Magazine this past week. I smiled when I saw the same artwork I have in my apartment that is seen on the mantel of the living room of this spread (someone has good taste). Check it out!

I love the mixture of different textures and pattern. I want to get myself a pair of those armchairs. The unique clerestory window design is stunning- shown in a off-white wood finish. The flax colored tone-on-tone drapery with damask embroidery is very tasteful. The drapery adds a neutral elegance to the space. I love the border detail seen on the sofa pillows paired with a modern velvet pattern (this is so yummy). Of course the nail head accents on the furniture adds to the casual elegance of this room.

Traditional Home

This fireplace is gorgeous the herringbone detail adds so much warmth to the space.

My Apartment

This breakfast banquette is fabulous upholstered in Donghia fabric. The unique shape of this banquette is mimicked on the stairwell....great visual interest. Circles, arches, and lady-like curves are repeated elements throughout the house. These can been seen through the architecture, textile patterns, and the light fixtures. The banquette can also provide extra space when entertaining in the kitchen (this is a great idea).

I love this gray-blue cabinet finish used in the kitchen. It was important to the homeowners to stick with a soothing color palette of taupes and pale blues. The mosaic backsplash design of gray-blue and white is exquisite- I am a sucker for these geometric transitional patterns. The white-washed accent island provides balance while harmonizing the neutral colors together.

The reoccurring motif of curvilinear lines is represented again in the cabinetry design (I love this pattern). I especially love when a theme is carried throughout a home. Nothing was constructed or designed without a careful thought process. Every element represents the theme of feminine lines, circles and arches- this makes for a cohesive design. Natural light is key in this space- which makes the whole kitchen feel light and airy.

This Nina Campbell window treatment fabric is to die for... compliments the light fixture as well.
