As an artist who probably makes a substantial income from licensing his music, you might think Neil Young would frown on piracy and file-sharing, but that appears not to be the case, according to an interview he gave at the Dive Into Media conference in Los Angeles. Instead of railing against file-sharers, Young called piracy “the new radio” because it’s “how music gets around.”

Decades ago, when the Finnish school system was badly in need of reform, the goal of the program that Finland instituted, resulting in so much success today, was never excellence. It was equity.

Since the 1980s, the main driver of Finnish education policy has been the idea that every child should have exactly the same opportunity to learn, regardless of family background, income, or geographic location. Education has been seen first and foremost not as a way to produce star performers, but as an instrument to even out social inequality.

I ask kids What is maths good for? or Name an important mathematician, and they really don't know, don't understand. I reckon that the history of maths should be a component of all mathematics classes, from the start. You can't get maths if you don't know its history, its beauty, its humanity.

Isn't it funny how we don't question the numbers? If it says 77% then we think it is accurate, with no questions about what the test was, who designed the test, what the test conditions were, or even if you can test what it is they set out to test.

Why the iPad sucks

Yeah, yeah, I know, I haven't seen one or used one so what would I know? And I'm a Mac user for twenty years, starting with an Apple IIe and writing this on a MacBook Pro.

And I'm sure that the iPad will be great; look great, feel good, be fast. All of that and more. But there is something that still sucks and it's this; over the last decade Apple has changed the kind of tools they make, from tools for creating to tools for consuming, from active tools to passive tools.

The iPad is a passive tool. You consume on it.
You consume video, music, photos, the internet, books, e-mail, games. It's entertainment. But you can't make anything, create anything on it. None of the things that you consume on it you can make on it. That is not its purpose.

What about iWork: Keynote and Numbers? I think they are toys and aren't at all creative. They have become too full of templates and the designs of others, too easy, too Microsoft.

One of the great things about Apple was that it supported, and was the preferred choice of creatives, particularly in design and print media. And it still is.

But starting with the iPod and then the iPhone and now the iPad, Apple is in the consumption business. At least with the iPod you could plug it in your ears and go for a walk. The iPad makes you sit down, stay on the couch, and consume. It is like a hand-held television.

And it is consumption that is killing us. Not only our bodies but our brains too. We need to be off the couch not on it, making and doing, not sitting and watching. Perhaps it should have been the iCushion? (All I see now when I hear iPad is this!)
