How I Want It To Be: The Surprising Adventures of David Scheier at AWP! 2012 (Part 2)

The reading game:

Ballroom filled with readers, twenty-five and a phantom. The vodka-RC and afternoon java are having at it in my gut, motovcocktail-acid-reflex. And the left foot, oh that stiff toed appendage who was always disagreed with me starts to do the, 'I'm broken and will not let you walk right' routine.' The Bespoke Adventure, reads read by titled picture menu goes without a failing twist, even with the modest phantom, number 7, a surprise reader between 34 & 156. The jist was eclectic and all did rather well. My favorites, A Dragon fly, that distorted voice, bus money, and iridescent residue. And then boom, all readers went away, I thought it would make me feel better, falling into a coffee coma and my girlfriend giving me the cold voice with a hint of nasty. I'm in ass-hole mode again. And I breath, breath, let the coffee win over liquor and I'm in the Hilton next.

The Panels/Reads:

Prose and Cons: Teaching Writing in Prison (3:00-4:15)

Miranda and I are in for 20 minutes. What are the roles in prison writing? My only question which I did bother to get answered: Downward eyed panelist discusses used books by Josef Williams on something he call sentence level. Sentences are like the depths of a pool, I'm making this up. Panelist drink water as they read prison writings, a magician changes from white to pale blue, a boy distrusts his father. My heart is boiling, head set to sweat. Miranda asks if I want to leave. My eyes want to close but my body wants to move. Never mind her thinking I'm anit-social, a bad boyfriend, a discussion only 20 minutes prior. How can we act so cool now, hearing prison talk? It took twenty minutes to get it, if we want to teach in prison, yeah sure, it's an option.

Page Meets Stage (3:00-4:15)

Another 20 spent not listening to slam poet after page poet after, i don't know. Miranda likes how there's a woman in a leather jacket eating pringle's three rows ahead of us, head laid back and bad poster poping chip after chip. Page poet reads or talks about grammar, lipstick--whoever that is--doesn't to you. Mir is hungry, we'll skip this reading too. This amount of java was to much for focus. I hear a guy out of the buisness of war, he wants a pearl, spoken with a long glide or is it sung into the vein of a love song? Fine, finer, we leave for Dunkin Doughnuts, it's that time in the week were I give into a non local vegan eatery in downtown Chicago. We run into Mary Cross who's going home to her birds. They understand me, all they want is food and water--they don't care about language. I sling my AWP tote bag on my shoulder, why do they chirt so much then, and she slaps my shoulders, smiles. You're so right, gosh darn-it, she walks off finger pointing in the air, you made my day, I'm going home. I'm getting another coffee.

A Reading & Conversation with Alice Notley (4:30-5:45)

We walk pass Hilton's Kitty O'Shea, what is that adn why am I interested in it? We meet the Lovely Ashley Brandt, who's brought some chips, olives, and grapes for her AWP lunch. She found us by a walking chance she reveals. Notley's reading is top shit and why not run into a familiar face like Miranda and me. Alice, the reader, forgets her water reads Culture One, her voice carries over from California, past a flood. We meet Marie, a dog Toni(y), a rock star, and some terrible girls who find to be not so much terrible as they are just girls, and the author who's voice comes from Paris hits Cali, and tunnels into Alice's body for this conference read. Sometime, normal culture, shes gravitating to black sky above sea. My coffee seems to be in the hierarchy of men, she speaking now under large white chandeliers with beads caging in the lights. I'm thinking: Miranda gets all upset when I don't say hi to her when I see her talking to her friends--why don't I? Alice's words usless why I have to do that. I want to sit in a corner and draw. There's no culture anymore. Disorientation insists we death eats us the way we eat rabbits, but I'm vegan. Why not ignore her, the lover, the reader? Maries stomach, character in a poem, stomach filled with blood. I need a scape goat, we're finishing my coffee. Alice is the speaker of the dead, wants to talk for them. She tells us she's the ghoul poet. If it's okay, I'd like to join you and write for the dead, and I have another drink and the coffee is gone. Her poetic ghouls live off blood sacks, she's powerless, she tells us hand in air as though she holds a skull and becoming ancient before our very eye's. Powerless and yet, I'm here and so are all these people.

The Running and Run-ins:

Running dizzy on empty now, sustenance of words, we move to like spirits through the halls and crowd of the Hotel. I want to make love somewhere here, in a stairwell and empty room, anywhere, but I should have some peanuts first or something. We run into my old Mentor Rosa Alcala, a page and voice poet, standing in the fall of elevators and cradle of AWP-gawkers. We drink in the SAIC reception, private dinning room so small I'm squeezed between a bearded poet, a short haired mid-western damsel, and a few screwdrivers, driving us into a gathering of word mongers who take me by the hand to the next reading I won't be listening to uptown. Instead I'll send mixed messages to my friend Mike, tell him to come, no wait I'll come to him, no wait, my foot hurts, the night is gray with broken ice clouds, the weather is cold but not cold enough to get me walking, I'm not done with the Rolling Rock, I want to get lost again and find my way to a lovers bed and I do and I wake and here I am about to do it all over again.

This time I have doodles.

Next stop Graywolf Press Reading or Home and Away: The influence of Travel Writing and the Palmer... or maybe bookfair is in order. Regardless I'm really looking forward to A Duende lecture at 3 and a convo wiht C.K. Williams. Bei Dao is here too, but lets get writerly and see how much booze I can guzzle to act all social and look more handsome before I go.

“Let’s keep it short, David old boy.”

Here starts yesterday through today until this very moment of fingers click-clacking away at The School of Art Institute at Chicago’s dean’s office keys—

cause that’s where I work:

The week and it’s happy end spin as fast as the inside of a Hilton elevator when you've just had a go at more than a few RC and Vodka with olive and, snuffs of nail polish, and some warm rum, lucky me! I was invited to that prestigious Association of Writers and Writing Programs conference (AWP) which is currently going on. Though not a “underground” musing, nor subterranean, nor sexy, but full of money and belonging to those professional writers who drink you under the table when they get the chance, there’s only a handful of people at this hotel ridden event, most of which so spooned by the routine of AWP-gagging they forget to swallow that this is somewhat under the surface, two feet down. Thus starts a catalog of my curious adventures as they happen(ed). I’ll try to do some illustrations, as I like to do but never really do, and upload them.

Beginning a day in advance I tried outfits anticipating to wear for AWP, the pink paisley button-up with boot cut pants, the black western style shirt with skin tight plaids, the gray sports coat and black v-neck combo, the blue poka-dot wrinkle free shirt, my fedora with the skull, my mock silk Chinese-style coat, the 70’s collar brown pleader jacket, only to realize now, I’ll probably wear the same torn Express jeans and black floral shirt I started with Monday.

Stocked up on Vodka and Rum, a better purchase than grocery money, and enough RC to play it cool while I take for granted my downtown studio for boozing instead of doodling. I missed my “volunteering” act, checking in the guests, passing out their tote bags,name tags, and conference literature for work and hoping I’d not be crossed off the list of no-shows. Met up with an ex professor Sasha Pimentel who thought I’d lost lots of weight, said I looked like a vampire when she knew me in El Paso,and met up with an old classmate, Michael, along with my royal love Miranda, where we set off on yesterdays first event to see my old mentor Rose Alcala not read at Columbia College. Trying to get my friend John Wilmes to venture out with us, who rather talk about missed connections and hating the awp-loppers, only to lose him in the confusion of theatrics and poetry readings—

We sat through endless timid poet, after low voiced line-break junkie, all who have books published-lucky Lucy's, monotoning their verse away until we, bored with winter-poems, headed for the old MacLean Ball room where I’d not see my girlfriend read "All Those Violent Sweaters" (Written By Ruth Margraff), nor other friends which are listed respectfully:

And others I don’t know and will never know, but instead ate star fruit and came down from my mellow buzz of vodka-cola. Still, what I saw courtesy of Margraff was spectacular: Red Frogs and Other Plays, "The Burlesque Flogging", where lips touched feather dusters -> touched nubs between legs on down parallel stage to gypsy sounds and Balcony of Two, mad man-fly bothering girl and food, sugar or flour poured form the balcony, star fruit on a plate, actors not on a stage, a man elegantly dressed on a balcony drinking from a ladle and bowl . . . We (Michael, Miranda and I) ended the night eating at pick-me up Café: vegan pizza, talking about writing-grad-school practice, drinking whiskey cider, Delirium tremens, Kahlua (which is vegan and thank go for that) Hot chocolate and crashing out in Lake View until now 10:50, where I cover my lady-friend at work waiting for the next event and sipping on more vodka-cola.

I need to practice my piece. I’m reading today. Hope I can swap shirts before then and change the stink form underarm to under breath.

Burial Day Books is Bringing 'Sixpenny Shockers' Back

14 haunted stories edited from a tomb on the west side of Chicago, has cemented itself into published history with a new and first collection: Gothic Blue Book. Throughout the collection you’ll be told off by death, meet a vengeful Poe fanatic, a sinister priest, get drenched in blood, desolated at a beach house, party with the dead at a shadowy cemetery, and of course there’s all the usual suspects of ghosts, murderers, monsters and paranormal events that lurk in such tales. So if that’s your bag you might want to check this book out. Get introduced to some fresh slabs and venture the pages of seasoned horror-word mongers like John Everson.

My personal fav is ‘Death and all His Friends’ by Abe Grace, a very short and humorous piece that had me laughing much after I read it. Still, I recommend flipping to any story and you’ll find something that’ll keep you reading. Editors: Cina & her hubby Gerardo Pelayo, along with their assistant editor P. Maxwell made sure to score some of the finest gothic stories and poems they could get there creepy little fingers on. Next time you’re on the hunt to burn some change on some modern Goth, take a look at Goth Blue Book.

RHINOFEST 2012 is setting the World on Fire

Intelligent, funny, and packed with a medley of pop-culture and literature, the current production of writer Megan Lang and director Cortney Philip’s sci-fi comedy about bad poetry “World on Fire” is at the Prop Theater and it’s setting the stage on fire.

The use of space and transitions between scenes was very groovy. One of the best 5-6 second scene in a play is a quarter in when introduced to The Captains Time Machine. The acting well executed and well suited for their roles, most notably The Captain played by Tommy Hefron. What’s most engaging though are the lines usually coming out of moments of static which somehow makes it the more funnier. “But who will edit Harry Putter?” was by far my favorite line which was pleasantly snuck between one of the more dramatic scenes of the play.

There’s one more show left Saturday, February 11 at 1 p.m. and at the price of 15 smackaroos or pay what you can this is easily a good way to spend your Saturday. Emphasis on ‘pay what you can:’ I paid with two Twizzlers and a Cliff bar wrapper.

Lightness and Darkness (L & D): Print Media Mayhem

There's a new print project eclipsing the multidisciplinary art scene. It's headed by two of the grooviest chicks this side of the Milkyway: Nicki Yowell & Taleen Kalenderian.

Nicki (Lightness), creator of the "Za: The Pizza Zine" and "Flush: An Epically Shitty Zine" is on the Midwest/Chicago side of this project.

Taleen (Darkness), founder of "Dum Dum Zine" and virtual photojunkie at "Photomaton" is on the Westcoast/Los Angeles side.

Together they raised enough greenbacks to get this thing into the light and into the shadows of the subterranean art world--making this a worthwhile project to mention here.

"Jerks in Cyber Space" A Response

Jerks in Space by John J. Karnes - I picked up this book at Quimbys about five months ago and I have to admit this is currently my favorite mini-comic. What pulled me in was the title, Jerks in Space: Latest Mini-Comic, (Science Edition) and my favorite of this publication, Jerks in Space: Manifesto. What I read was pure comic pleasure (no pun inteded), the foot notes and self-awareness draw one into Karnes with delightful recognition that this is a comic book. It's really refreshing since many 'self-aware' works seem lazy or juvenile. Jerks, becomes somewhat dialog with the reader, which I appreciate and love the juxtaposition of self-recognition, both a fantasy world and our actual world that exist outside the comic. You may be wondering what the plot is, of course you are. Brace yourself for space serpents who appreciate art on earth and their attempt to keep humans producing good art, sometimes by tragic, political, and the use of robots.

My friend Matt, a.k.a. Nom Star introduced me to the world of chiptunes
sometime last year. To a wannabe cool guy like me, it sounded
intellectually lame. I’ve been exposed to some glitch art and other
videogame based art for awhile and was thinking Cory Arcangel with
midi-files; stuff you could get into if you saw the world
pixelated or thought you leveled up every time you ate or drank. I
thought, this would be the sounds of nerds-ville. . . and it is—I’m not
going to lie, it’s pretty nerdy, in a good way.

For those who are unfamiliar with Chiptunes or Chipmusic, here’s wiki’s
description:
Chiptunes: . . . synthesized electronic music often produced with the
sound chips of vintage computers and video game consoles, as well as
with other methods such as emulation,” (Wikipedia).

My opinion on it was rather crude, and then this happened:

Sunday, July 17th, 2011, I was coming down from a two week bender of
drinking and other drugs—breaking my weekend-solo-drinking to see Nom
Star at The Elbo Room in Chicago. I thank him for the chipped out happy
birthday song. I came in drunk and not so much in the mood for music.
So I spent most of my time there checking out the very few girls and
having shots and beer. Then this attractive duo enter the stage and
what I got was a face full of MIDI jive, served by Boston-based sound
artists, BR1GHT PR1MATE: Lydia Marsala and James Therrien, using a
gameboy as a beat maker and Lydia’s lush vocals it’s hard not to get
your body moving to 8bit sound clouds swirling around your cerebellum.
Soundwaves grow like quartz from digital harmonics and synthesized
guitar tones. Yeah, these guys are like, “Wow!”

Tim Michel: As word smith and jam maker one wonders where he gets the time to dish out prolific and tasty sound sauce so often. This is TELEVISION:

Synth child TCHEM channel surfs some high fructose sound to deliver a space cruising soundtrack. Fittingly electric acid shoe gaze guitar riffs sinking into the sponge of your ears: “Self Image” and “Going Inside.” While other beats are minimal lucid day dreams, “Close is Far,” and “Television.” TCHEM serves a plate of two minute comets, and digital star dust—futuristic and delightfully simple.

How Yellow Daisies Ended Up on My Book Case

Comic/Zine: Amara Leipzig’s Yizkor

Before I “blurb” about Amara Leipzig’s Yizkor I feel I should start off with how this comic came into my hands. The second paragraph is the direct musing on Amara Leipzig’s book.

The Hand-Made Library at the Archer Ballroom, Feb 24, 2011 south Chicago. I stumbled in holding a six pack of King Cobra’s, pockets filled with loose change and my own hand-made comic. My agenda for the evening was to pass out what few copies I had of my eight page zine, get slightly toasted, and perhaps get some interesting DIY books in return. I was expecting to get a bunch of zines, or Cd’s in exchange for my little comic. At the end of the night, before the performances and readings submerged into the mesh of King Cobra’s, boxed wine, watery chitchat with people I’d never meet again and some I’d like to, I found myself sitting at a long fold out table sewing pages of poems by the featured readers in a glittery book. These cats had me doing all the work, which was fun, and a great way to meet some of the other people there. Amara Leipzig was one of those people binding the “Hand-Made Library” book, someone whom I had heard briefly about before the event, a fellow comic book maker and so there was already a motive to speak with Amara and perhaps get a copy of her zine. I had nothing to give her in exchange, having had exhausted the three comics I brought, except for a promise to someday soon give her a copy of my work and to read her comic/zine.

Yizkor

Skimming over a random page (maybe page 8) I thought, oh another comic about WWII. Not that there’s anything wrong with writing about the second great war, but that horrific event has become a stylized genre and those wishing to tell stories about it walk on well treaded territory thanks to archetypes previous films and books have giving us. But that’s a rant for another blog. Yizkor in a nutshell is a story on storytelling, which the title Yizkor (remembrance) ties into. Along with this framework are themes of identity, family, loss, displacement, and womanhood. The story arch of Yizkor jumps smoothly to and from time, and at the core yellow daisies which link the various scenes together. Whenever daisies are present in the book so is the color yellow—hinting to the significance of the image. A tactic used in many black and white comics and well executed here. As a result one finds a moving story that spans three generations merging time and characters into a single moment that could be told in less than 26 pages. The artwork is simple and well suited for the subject matter, not allowing needless details to unbalance the story. The panels themselves read with such delicate pacing that one can’t help notice that this comic must have meant more than just a side project or classroom assignment, but rather a lingering shadow of a story that screamed to become tangible in someone’s hands.

I walked away from The Hand Made Library with more than just a future hangover and stain-glass memories of performances and faces. I walked away with Yizkor—

Greetings, blog-junkies, word musers, reptilian scenesters and electronic surfers,

This is the start of a series of reviews, articles, and general musings of art that's stealthy under the radar, and maybe some that's not. There's a few things going down towards the end of this month and much to muse about next month. For starters things kick off with an up coming blurb on a Comic/Zine: Amara Leipzig’s Yizkor. I'm also looking forward to visiting the MFA show at The School of the Art Institute, hopefully I'll be sober enough to digest the the sights, the sounds, the smells? Also, I'll look at the sweet sounds of New York based sound wizard TCHEM.
