This isn’t speculation, it’s the same situation we’ve documented and escalated for years.

Here’s the cycle:

• HRM does not begin field maintenance until the second week of May, with sport fields generally targeted for June 1.
• Our paid field rental contracts begin June 1 (ex: we paid $5,668 for one Sackville block alone in 2025).
• Fields are routinely not ready by June 1st (long grass, no lines, potholes, rocks, weeds, mud, safety risks, etc.)
• We have offered, multiple times, to fund maintenance ourselves or provide our own equipment and staff – at the time, we were rejected as there were contracts with third-parties
• Our members and your families pay for programs, show up, and find conditions that aren’t safe, let alone playable for soccer.
• Members complain. Some quit. Some request refunds. In 2023, we lost hundreds of U3-U8 players participation across one summer with the primary reason being due to field conditions.
• We meet with HRM, we’re told they’re working on it..the next year, we’re back at square one. Some good people come to the table and it always sounds positive, but nothing changes – for their reason on bigger political/HRM policy constraints

Suburban FC Confirmed as Host of the 2026 Maritime Club Championship (U15 & U17 Boys)

Suburban FC is proud to announce that we have been confirmed as a host for the inaugural 2026 Maritime Club Championship, welcoming the top U15 and U17 boys clubs from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island to Halifax this June.

The group stage will be played June 5-7th, at Dalhousie University’s Wickwire Field

The Maritime Club Championship is a brand-new regional competition built to crown a true club champion of the Maritimes. Each division features 12 teams (7 from Nova Scotia, 4 from New Brunswick, and 1 from PEI , split into 4 groups of 3, with only the group winners advancing to the Semi-Finals and Final later in the summer.

We’re proud to be working with Maritime Athletic Profiles who will be the presenting sponsor & partners for this event. Maritime Athletic Profiles will be driving the media & fan engagement – from the live-streams, highlights, interviews & more!

What to Expect on the June 5-7th weekend

Over three days at Wickwire, fans will see:

• The top U15 and U17 boys clubs from across three provinces
• Round-robin group play with everything on the line (only one team per group advances)
• A penalty shootout format on drawn matches, ensuring every game finishes with a winner and added drama
• The chance to watch the region’s brightest young talent compete for a spot in the August Knockout Stage, where the Maritime champion will ultimately be crowned!

For local supporters, this is one of the most significant youth soccer events ever hosted in Halifax, and admission gives Maritimes families an up-close look at the next generation of players.

During his time with Suburban FC, Ben played a key role in leading and developing the club’s Skill Centre and grassroots programming. Working across multiple age groups and stages of development, he helped raise the standard of our environment and pushed the level of both players and coaches.

Ben’s impact goes well beyond sessions and training plans. He brought a consistent level of energy, care, and leadership that helped shape the experience for hundreds of players and families within our club. His ability to connect with players and create a positive, challenging, and enjoyable environment has left a lasting mark on our community. Ben helped build a foundation that will continue to benefit Suburban FC moving forward.

Connor has quickly established himself as one of the province’s top emerging goalkeeper coaches, earning opportunities within some of the leading environments in the region. His experience includes roles with Dalhousie University, along with the Nova Scotia Provincial and EXCEL Programs, where he has worked closely with the top goalkeeping talent in the province.

His rise through these environments reflects both the quality of his work and his ability to impact players within high-performance settings. Connor brings a modern approach to goalkeeper development, with a strong focus on detail, consistency, and building environments that push players to improve.

Alongside his work locally, Connor has continued to invest in his own development, gaining experience alongside Mark Haynes with the Halifax Tides, and further expanding his exposure with an upcoming stint working with Toronto FC. These opportunities position him within some of the top goalkeeping environments in Canada and will directly support the standard being built at Suburban FC.

As Head Goalkeeper Coach, Connor will lead the club’s goalkeeper development pathway, implementing a clear structure and raising expectations across all age groups within Suburban FC.

Executive Director Oliver Hewish shared his thoughts on the appointment:

“Connor is someone who’s earned his way into these environments, and that matters. He’s serious about what he does, he’s learning from the right people, and he’s already working with top players. For us, it’s about continuing to raise standards across the club, and bringing Connor in is a big step in that direction.”

We’re currently building an internal directory of businesses and services that exist within our Suburban club membership. If you, or your family, run, own, or manage a business, whether it’s in trades, services, legal, marketing, printing, hospitality, or anything in between, we’d love to hear from you!

Why we’re doing this

The objective is simple: when our club needs goods or services, we want to go to our own Suburban community first. Beyond that, this directory opens the door to mutually beneficial opportunities between the club and our member-businesses through promotion, advertising, sponsorship, and preferred rates. It’s another way we’re putting community at the centre of everything we do at Suburban FC.

Vlad joins Suburban following his time with Soccer Elite Academy in Edmonton, where he served as a Lead Coach and in the role of Elite Prospect Director. During his time there, he worked with players across all age groups and levels, delivering a high volume of sessions focused on technical development, game understanding, and building strong habits both on and off the ball.

Vlad spent time in Madrid, Spain, with DS Academy, gaining exposure to professional youth environments, learning, developing & educating within La Liga academy structures. These experiences have helped shape his approach to development and the environments he looks to create for players.

Originally from Edmonton, Vlad brings several years of experience with a strong main focus on grassroots player development. His philosophy centres on helping players build confidence, improve their understanding of the game, and take ownership of their own development. He places a strong emphasis on mindset, attention to detail, and creating sessions that are engaging, effective, and enjoyable – all fundamental principles of our program design & player experience at SFC.

Vlad will also play an important role in building a positive and inclusive environment for players and families, while contributing to the continued growth of grassroots programming across the club.
