Frank Coffield

Here is an extract from Professor Frank Coffield’s keynote address to a teaching and learning event at Success North held in association with LSIS in December 2010.  The event was well attended and Professor Coffield’s talk was particularly well received.  He challenged all those present, from management to tutors posing questions rather than giving answers. Are we creating independant critical learners? Do we work in colleges of further education or of further employability studies? Is what we do only about being an efficient business? In today’s knowledge economy teaching is a noble and essential profession and we need to defend learning and teaching.

Frank Coffield is Emeritus Professor of Education at the Institute of Education, University of London, and Visiting Professor at the University of Sunderland. He retired at the end of 2007 after 42 years in education, having worked in the universities of Keele, Durham and Newcastle in England; and at a comprehensive school, an Approved School and Jordanhill College of Education in Scotland.

In 2008 he wrote Just suppose teaching and learning became the first priority…, and in 2009 All you ever wanted to know about learning and teaching but were too cool to ask, both of which were published by LSN and can be downloaded from the LSN website free of charge.

Julie is a Higher Education Academy Teaching Fellow at the University of Wolverhampton in the school of education and will be head of department for the post-compulsory team from February next year. She is currently seconded to ESCalate, a Subject Centre of the Higher Education Academy Network, whose aim is to enhance student learning in education programmes throughout the UK.
Here, Julie talks about her work with e-portfolios on DTE(E)LLS programmes, about the importance of building a sense of community in online space and offers some practical tips for tutors wishing to embed Web2.0 technology into their programmes.

Here he talks to Richard Harris of Success North CETT about the well-established, globally recognised CELTA course and how it compares to generic teacher training in the UK. He assesses the benefits of the close link between subject specialism and pedagogic input and possible drawbacks and barriers to using this approach more widely.

Venus Carew

Venus Carew, teacher trainer at Success North, has been teaching maths for over 20 years and been a teacher trainer for over four years. She is involved with action research with the NCETM and is looking at ways to allow teachers to incorporate ideas generated through research into their practice.

Welcome to another Success North CETT podcast. Today, I am speaking with Shona Dunn, teacher trainer with the Success North team based at the Teaching Development Centre at Newcastle College. She is a teacher trainer for both ESOL and Literacy and has recently developed the Literacy for ESOL teachers course at Newcastle College. She is interested in the increasing overlap between literacy and ESOL needs of learners.

This was originally recorded early in 2008, so the planned training courses mentioned towards the end of the recording have now been successfully run.
