Mini Succulent Gardens.

For the last few weeks, I have been popping in all my local charity shops to find planters in white/cream for my living room. I thought it would take forever to find planters I liked on such a tight budget but I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly it all came together.

With so many cuttings and baby succulents all over the place, I needed a way to save some space and display them so they are pleasing to the eye.

This was also a way for me to protect a few prized plants from the snow and intense cold weather we had in Feb/March, having a few of each plant in different locations around the home/garden for me gives peace of mind.

Once the small plants and cuttings have become more established plants they will be potted up or added to a larger display.

My charity shop planter finds totalled £5.60 #bargain :) all the plants were ones I already had so this was a very cheap way to give the living room some life and soul.

Will update over the coming weeks with new plants and planters :)

Crassula ‘Tresco Seaspray.

Crassula ‘Tresco Seaspray’.
This cute little plant looks like a miniature Crassula ovata, but is much more delicate with slender stems with pairs of tiny fleshy leaves and pom-pom-like flowers.

A slightly shaded position results in a more greenish plant that stretches the normally short stems to about 8 inches, while a sunny spot reddens the leaves and keeps it at approximately 4 inches high.

Hardy perennial if planted outside in a sunny but well-drained location.

It is very easy to propagate, and any fallen leaves very quickly root themselves.

This is a great plant to mix in with other small succulents in containers but likewise, a potful makes a delightful mini-statement on a sunny kitchen windowsill.

How to propagate Haworthia - Commonly called Zebra Plant

Commonly called zebra plant, Haworthia attenuata is a cold-sensitive succulent species grown for its eye-catching, green and white textured leaves.

How to Grow and Care

Display Zebra Plant anywhere it can receive plenty of sun or bright light. South facing windows will provide the most sun, however, east or west provide direct sun part of the day that I find more suitable.

During the growing season from April to September water the Zebra Plant thoroughly and then water when the soil becomes dry to the touch (not bone dry though). Winter is a tricky time for these plants although they are a tough species. Many growers will overwater then alongside cold temperatures or drafts the plant can become very sick, or even die. The leaves are storage organs so during the winter water much less and allow the top soil to dry out.

It will produce an abundance of offshoots, or pups, once established.
The offshoots provide a simple and highly effective means of propagating new zebra plants if they are carefully removed and potted in a suitable growing mix. However, they should only be removed in spring or autumn when the plant is not actively growing, to reduce stress to both the offshoots and the parent plant.

Locate the rooted offsets around the base of the zebra plant. Carefully scrape away the soil from around the base of the offshoots and look for small, pale pink or white roots.

Insert the blade of a gardening knife into the soil midway between the parent plant and the rooted offshoot. Slide the blade through the soil to sever the connecting root.

Etch out a 2-inch radius in the soil around the base of the rooted offshoot using the tip of your gardening knife. Dig down along the radial line to a 5-inch depth using a small handheld spade.

Insert the blade of the handheld spade at an angle underneath the rooted offshoot. Carefully pry it loose from the soil and remove it. Fill in the hole left by the offshoot to protect the parent plant's roots.

Crumble off half the soil from around the offshoot's rootball. Pot it in a small, 3- to 4-inch nursery container. Use a potting mix made up of 2 parts perlite, 2 parts coarse sand and 1 part sterile compost

Place the potted zebra plant offshoot where it will receive bright, diffuse light

Withhold watering for the first three days. Water only until the soil feels barely moist in the top inch. Maintain light, even moisture in the soil mixture, but allow it to dry out for a day or so once a week.

Common Name

It is known by different names like Hottentot Fig, Highway Ice Plant, Ice plant and Pigface. Sour Fig.

Description

The physical features of these plants are:

Flowers : It blooms in the months of August, September and October, in shades of yellow and pink. It has a diameter between 100 and 150 mm. The flowers are extremely flamboyant with several stamens that are bordered by stigma appearing like star fish.

Fruits : Edible fruits of almost 35 mm diameter grow on these plants, which attain a yellowish tinge on maturity. These pulpy fruits are fashioned like a gyrating top that grow on thick stalks.

Stems : It has juicy stems that rise upward in a curling manner. It forms a dense cover on the ground.

Leaves : Leaves are also juicy, which closely gathers along the succulent stem. In their younger stage, they are yellowish or greenish but over time they turn reddish.

Distribution

It is prevalent in inland slopes and coastal regions, stretching from Namaqualand till the Eastern Cape. It covers Northern, Eastern and Western Cape in its distributional range.

Plantation

The plant grows well in full sun. It can grow in different kind of soils, if they are well-drained. Being tolerant to drought, it can grow in sandy soils, sand dunes, flat ground, slightly brackish soil as well as rough patch of gardens.

This plant can be propagated via root and stem cuttings during summer or springs. Seeds are easily dispersed by the carriers like animals which germinate fast.

I have just been given a small rooted Hoya and I've been looking online how to care for this little beauty.

Below are some tips and facts I have picked up along the way.

Hoya carnosa - wax plant - grows with long, slender vines which are covered with thick, green leathery leaves. The leaves are sometimes flecked with silvery or creamy white. The wax plant will produce parachute clusters of star-shaped, flowers with five-point centers, very variable in colour. The flowers are so intricately detailed, uniformly shaped and shiny and therefore also called porcelain flower.

Hoyas prefer morning sun. If they get too much shade they won’t flower. Full sun, however, will turn them yellow and they’ll not be happy

Cuttings.

Encouraging the cutting to develop roots. Place it in a glass of water and wait until it develops roots, around 5-10 cm long. The cuttings need to be constantly damp to develop roots.

7 Reasons Your Succulents are Dying

1. YOU ARE GIVING THEM TOO MUCH WATER.
Succulents don’t need to be watered like your ordinary or typical houseplant. They are a type of cacti after all, so they can get by with less water and enjoy well-drained soil. The soil should feel cool and damp to the touch, but never saturated or watered down and NEVER muddy. You might want to mist the ground instead of feeding directly for best results.

2. THE PLANTING CONTAINER IS TOO SMALL.
Did you find a cute teacup or flower pot for your succulent? Sure it looks nice, but does it give the roots the room it needs to grow? Probably not. The depth of the container should be twice as deep as the roots of the plant, while the width should be at least three times as wide. Doing this gives the plant plenty of room to spread out!

3. THE PLANTING CONTAINER DOESN’T PROVIDE DRAINAGE.
People love planting succulents in cute containers, cups, boots, and all sorts of other containers, but the truth is if they don’t have proper drainage they will never work. Your container should have several drainage holes where water can escape. A piece of net over the holes can help dirt from escaping in the process.

4. YOUR SUCCULENTS AREN’T WARM ENOUGH.
Succulents love warm weather. They don’t want to be near a drafty window or out in cold weather. Keep them in a space where they can be warm and stay warm. They won’t do well if the weather is always changing on them.

5. THEY ARE TOO COMPACTED.
Allow for your succulents to fill out naturally and avoid stuffing them closely in the planter. There should be several inches between plants, so they have room to grow and won’t smother each other. Let growth happen naturally and allow for a natural filling instead.

6. YOUR SOIL ISN’T NUTRIENT RICH.
Succulents love nutrient-rich soil. Stir in some organic matter or try a planting mix when planting succulents. This way they get the feed they need to be healthy and look beautiful. Check your local garden centre for a soil mix specifically for cactus or succulents. These will have the right density and nutrients for your plants.

7. YOU NEED TO TRANSPLANT THEM.
If your succulent has been in a container for several months and seems to be thriving, you need to re-pot it into a larger pot. By doing so, you will give it more room to grow, and it won’t get cramped and smothered by its roots. It is also a great time to think about using your succulent to start more plants now that it is bigger. It is easy to regrow succulents from a mother plant.

I first came across these stunning succulents in a neighbours garden and I was mesmerised. Trailing over hanging baskets and filling containers all over her garden. About Graptopetalum paraguayense.

Cold-hardy, Graptopetalum paraguayense (Ghost Plant) is a small evergreen succulent forming beautiful wide rosettes up to 6 inches (15 cm) . The foliage warms up to pinkish-yellow in hot, dry conditions and turns blue-gray in partial shade.

Common names include Sedum weinbergii, Mother-of-pearl-plant and Ghost plant. The Graptopetalums are generally easy to propagate, by seeds, leaf cuttings or offsets.

Growing From Leaf Cuttings.

Any rosette that breaks off has the potential to root and start a new plant. Even a leaf that drops off will root below the parent plant and produce a new rosette quickly.

How to Grow Succulents from Leaf Cuttings.

Leaf cuttings are easier than they look, and it is very satisfying to see the young plants growing from the old leaf.

There are a number of succulents that can be propagated easily this way: Gasteria, Haworthia, Sansevieria and plants of the Crassulaceae family (Crassula, Kalanchoe, Sedum, Graptopetalum).

The easy way is just to get a leaf. Let the cut dry out in the shade for a day to a week, and just place them on top of the soil. Do not bury or semi-bury into the soil. The roots will find their way into the soil on their own.

The soil should be well drained. If you need to improvise good growing soil, mix half well-rotted compost with half fine pumice or grit. You can expect to see a change in the leaf after 3-4 weeks and the young plants will take a season to develop into new plants.

The leaves need water at some point but only a light sprinkling. While “grown-up” succulents only need to be watered every week, or even once a month (depending on the season/heat), the leaves need to be watered constantly without being watered too much. Only water the soil after it is dry.

The temperature is an important factor. Succulents of the Crassulaceae family will root better in the fall, and in late winter/early spring. They will generally not root in the summer, but rather slowly dry out, or rot. The rule of thumb is that the leaf cuttings has chances to grow only if the parent plant is actively growing.

Sedum Dendroideum

Sedum dendroideum is a small shrub up to 3 feet (90 cm) tall spreading up to 4 feet (1.2 m) wide and rooting along stems to form a large mass. Leaves are 1.5 inch (2.8 cm) long, green, spathulate with an almost ovate leaf that is easily distinguished from the only other similar species, Sedum praealtum, by the presence of subepidermal glands along the leaf margin. The large clusters of small vivid yellow, star-like flowers form above the foliage in late winter and early spring.

How to Grow and Care

When growing Sedum, keep in mind that Sedum plants need very little attention or care. They will thrive in conditions that many other plants thrive in, but will do just as well in less hospitable areas. They are ideal for that part of your yard that gets too much sun or too little water to grow anything else. A common name for Sedum is Stonecrop, due to the fact that many gardeners joke that only stones need less care and live longer.

Sedum is easily planted. For shorter varieties, simply laying the plant on the ground where you want it to grow is normally enough to get the Sedum plant started there. They will send out roots from wherever the stem is touching the ground and root itself. If you would like to further ensure that the plant will start there, you can add a very thin covering of soil over the plant. For taller Sedum varieties, you can break off one of the stems and push it into the ground where you would like to grow it. The stem will root very easily and anew plant will be established in a season or two.

Origin

Native to Mexico. It has been naturalized to California and Ohio.

With the exception of a few species in Peru, sedums are endemic to regions of the Northern Hemisphere, spanning a wide range of climate zones, from sub-tropical to polar. The genus is comprised of more than 400 species, with still more garden cultivars and hybrids in existence. Sedums are remarkable for their diversity of colors, shapes, and growth habits.

Because of hundreds of thousands of years of geographic separation, the physical characteristics of sedums from one region to the next are remarkably different. The familiar Sedum morganianum (commonly called Donkey Tail Sedum), a species endemic to Eastern Mexico, is a dusty yellow plant with a prostrate, serpent-like growth habit often used in hanging baskets because of its ability to cascade several feet down the side of a container. Sedum cauticola, endemic to alpine regions of Northern Japan, is a grayish-purple plant that produces beautiful magenta flower clusters in summer. These two species look nothing like one another, yet they are very close genetic relatives and classified in the same genus. Apart from physical differences, these two species are likewise very different when it comes to cold tolerance. Due to its geographical distribution in subtropical Mexico, Sedum morganianum can die from exposure to temperatures that fall below 25F. On the other hand, Sedum cauticola, endemic to regions of extreme winter cold, can withstand temperatures well below 0F. This species is amongst a group of alpine sedums that are deciduous, dying back to the ground during their winter dormancy and devoting all of their energy into protecting their root systems from extreme cold. How to Grow Succulents in Containers

Growing succulents in containers allow you to bring your own little piece of the desert into your home or garden. Succulents look natural in western decors and landscapes. This diverse group of plants includes stiff, upright cacti as well as sprawling and trailing plants that are well-suited to hanging baskets and window boxes. Most enjoy a similar environment but check the plant tag to see if your succulent has any special needs.

Containers and Soil

Succulents grow well in almost any container that is at least 4 inches deep and has holes in the bottom for drainage. Choose a pot about 1/2 inch larger than the base of the plant for upright succulents. Plant succulents with spreading or trailing growth habits, such as holiday cacti, in a pot 1 inch larger than their original pot. Succulents need a loose soil that drains freely. Use a commercial cactus and succulent potting soil, or mix your own from four parts regular potting soil, five parts perlite and one part coarse builder's sand. Spread a layer of small river rocks or aquarium gravel over the top of the soil to keep moisture away from the crown and prevent rot.

Placement

Most succulents like bright sunlight and are content to spend their days outdoors in the baking sun or indoors in a sunny, preferably south-facing window. They thrive in warm or even hot summer temperatures. When first taking a plant outdoors, expose it to bright sunlight gradually to prevent sun scorch. Provide shelter from drenching rains or bring the plants indoors during rainy weather.

Water and Fertilizer

You can water succulents planted in a soil that drains freely just as you would any other container plant. Saturate the soil completely and allow it to drain from the holes in the bottom of the pot. After the excess water drains, empty the saucer so that the plant isn't standing in water. Allow the pot to dry out completely between watering. Succulents don't need a lot of nitrogen because they grow very slowly. Feed them monthly with a cactus and succulent fertilizer. If you don't want to purchase a special fertilizer for your succulents, you can use a high-phosphorous, low-nitrogen houseplant fertilizer mixed at half strength.

Winter Rest Period

Most succulents need a rest period of at least two months in winter. Place the plant in a room with cooler temperatures. Many succulents need winter temperatures below 60 degrees Fahrenheit in order to set blooms but don't allow them to freeze. Reduce watering to just a drizzle around the sides of the pot or wet the top of the potting soil with a mister when the pot is dry. Withhold fertilizer during the resting phase.
