The new year brings a clean slate and fresh intentions to become more organized. No wonder the National Association of Professional Organizers dubs January “Get Organized Month.” Even though today is the last day of January, I’ve got some ideas on how you can still get your home in order.

Do you need a little motivation to declutter? How about the opportunity to make some money while you make more space? Here are 3 of the easiest ways to “find” money:

1. Forgotten assets. When I helped a client organize her office, we found paperwork for a long-forgotten savings account that held several thousand dollars. It was tucked in a folder deep in her filing cabinet. Please don’t tuck $100 bills in books or squirrel away valuables like coins and jewelry in odd “safe” places in your home. They’re easy to forget and hard to find.

2. Unclaimed property. You may have hundreds or even thousands of dollars in unclaimed property—from dividend checks, terminated insurance policies and safe deposit box contents—waiting for you. Finding it is as easy as searching “unclaimed property” and your state’s name to locate a state-run database. In California, the Comptroller’s Office oversees unclaimed property. In Pennsylvania, the Treasury Department is the place to go. To claim your money, print out and complete the claim form on the website. When a client mentioned to me recently that he thought he might have some unclaimed property, I ran a quick search. Less than a minute later, he was on his way to becoming $1,300 richer. Tip: Check the database for every state you’ve lived in. You never know what you might have left behind. (Note from Leah: I did three articles on unclaimed property, which you can read below)

3. Unwanted items. The furniture, knickknacks, toys and you no longer want may be someone else’s treasures. “May” is the key word here. Your goal is not to make as much money as you can from selling these things but to have someone take away stuff you no longer want. So shoot a few photos on your camera phone, write some descriptions and post the items on craigslist.org on a Thursday or Friday, when buyers are scouring the site. Price used items at about a third of what you paid for them, and be willing to flex on price. No buyers? Try freecycle.org. Remember, someone is helping you make more space in your home, and that’s a good thing.

I get two Sunday newspapers each weekend, and this week I ended up with 5 coupon inserts. They were from Red Plum (2), Smart Source (2), and P&G (1). As far as being loaded with coupons for items you might want to have on a Super Bowl menu, they most definitely are. There were coupons for tomato sauce, beans, shredded cheese–all good for making chili–along with chips, cookies, and more.

If you want to throw a Super Bowl party on the cheap, definitely pluck those coupon inserts out of your Sunday paper before you toss them in the recycling bin. If it’s Monday morning and you fear it might be too late to go back and get a Sunday paper, stop in to your local dollar store, which may still have overruns of the Sunday paper–at at a buck a paper.

At the same time don’t forget about printing out online coupons, such as this coupon I’d posted for M&Ms last week. (I printed out one for myself and used it to save $1 on a few bags of pretzel M&Ms. Nom nom!) You can easily double your savings for free by printing out coupons and cutting coupons from Sunday circulars.
