On Monday, my friend Lena and I went to Michigan City, Indiana to spend some time with our friends Gail and George.

We took the South Shore Line from Millennium Park. The route of the train is not overwhelming. It goes from here to there and a little farther. The ride was slow but uneventful.

They met us at the station. Lena thought she would get some coffee at the station. She was disappointed.

George conducted a tour of Michigan City, with a running narrative by Gail. They are excellent hosts and great at showing off their city.

I lived in Michigan City in the fifties for several months. It certainly has changed. As a child, we would play in the woods on the back of the sand dunes, climb to the top and roll down the sand front. All the dunes along Lake Shore Drive are now built up. The woods have roads and houses. There is a community called Beachwalk that is built on a former sand quarry. They constructed a wooden boardwalk to cross the wooded dunes. The buildings are a pastel mix. Cute, but not in a bad way.

Delicious lunch at their house. Who knew you could use Old Bay Seasoning for something other than boiling shrimp. Gail grilled chicken seasoned with Old Bay and served it on a wonderful salad.

They share their home with Oscar and Tom, two lovable cats.

Tom

Tom is a sleek, black beauty sitting on his perch with a great view of the lake.

Oscar at rest

Oscar loves everyone and has great markings. Check out the striped tail.

Next was off to taste wine. We drove over to the wine country in Michigan. Three stops, 15 tastes of local wines and beautiful scenic views. There is something to say for peace and quiet. On the way home we got caught in the most amazing thunder storm. The news said it was four inches in less than an hour. The storm was over when we got home.

Rest then dinner out. The Galveston Steakhouse is recommended if you are in Michigan City.

After dinner we went to the beach. Let me explain a basic fact of life when you live in Chicago, THE LAKE IS ALWAYS EAST. In Michigan City, that rule is not true. The sun sets in the lake. Totally wrong, but beautiful.

And what is a visit with friends without the group picture?

Let's see if I can get this thing rolling again.

Nothing much has changed. That pretty much covers what has gone on since last we meet.

More recently, last night we went to the redtwist theatre. (Why can't they use the American spelling? They are on the north side of Chicago.)

There we saw "Look Back in Anger". It was an amazingly great presentation of a sad, angry, dramatic, I've-seen-it-once-don't-need-to-again play.

My good friend Laury Libin came to town to see it and encouraged his friends to join him because Baize Buzan, a lifelong (her life) friend was starring. She did a spectacular job, as did all the other members of the cast.

It was a great night of theater, but not up-lifting or inspirational, unless thinking that your life ain't so bad was the plan to the playwright.

After the performance, our group of eight, including Baize, her mother Monika, and other family and friends went to Francesca's, just across Bryn Mawr from the theater and talked, ate and laughed until the fellow washing the floor got to our table.

Laury and I marveled at the up-scale changes to our "old neighborhood". Bryn Mawr used to be a minor commercial street, around the corner from the old Edgewater Beach Hotel. It started to go down hill but never got really bad. It is now clean, cared for, and thriving. Good job, Chicago.

Friday, August 17th was a beautifully clear day, warm, but not too hot. And it was the practice day for the Chicago Air & Water Show.
Gene had court in the morning and on the way home, we decided to try out the Clock Tower Cafe that opened in Lincoln Park. It is right on the golf course, and far away from noise of the traffic on Lake Shore Drive.

We were having a quiet, relaxing lunch on the deck of the cafe, when the jets started. Too cool. This is the only photo I was able to get. They move so fast, that be the time you find them and aim, they are out of the frame. But great fun to watch.

On Saturday we had our regular lunch with Abraham and then I was meeting Lena at The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art (Intuit) where we were going to participate in a yarn bombing. When we got there, the leader changed it to a flower happening.

We used all sorts of arts & crafts materials and created fanciful flowers that we attached to the lamppost outside the museum.

According to Lisa, a building employee, Crowley stayed in the garden for a little while, then went to the parking area. When traffic appeared, he flew onto a car and then onto trellis work. He stayed on the vertical trellis for about 6 hours, looking like a decoration. As it got dark, he settled into a planter on the wall. The next morning, after much cawing and commotion, he left with his family.

It is nice to have a rescue story with a happy ending.
knitting Chicago KAL

Being The Bird Lady Strikes Again

Today I was given a young crow with an injured toe. The bleeding has stopped and he (?) is asleep on a towel on my bathroom sink. I am sure that he is able to fly. The window is WIDE open and he has no inclination to fly away, even when standing on my arm at the window sill. I think that rest is the best thing I can do for him now. What food will he want? Grapes and small bits of rye bread are being ignored. A little chopped meat was equally unwelcome.

He made himself at home, tucked his head under his wing and took a nap. Time passed and we had our dinner and returned to check on the bird. Not on the sink. He flew to the window sill where he has now been for the last three hours.

Here is a lifted photo of the memorable lighting and set design.

Joan and I suspected that they presented it without an intermission to be sure that you sat through the entire show. I do not regret seeing the play, it was an unforgettable experience, I just wish it had been more uplifting.

Tonight, on the other had, Gene and I joined Mark and Nancy at the Polarity Ensemble Theatre's production of "Tom Jones". WOW, was it fun. There was a cast of 17, in a space that seats 52. We were pleased to be among the attendees. There was never a dull moment. Described by the producer as "an adaptation of the 1749 Henry Fielding novel by David Hammond. This is a big, sexy, funny romp of a play." And that it was. We were amazed at how much can be done with minimal props and many doors. I'm glad we went, it washed away all the gloom the the previous day. Sorry I don't have a photo for you, but I've included the Polarity logo.
knitting Chicago KAL

A New Skill

On Saturday, my friend Lena and I took a class in Split-Ply Braiding at Sifu Design Studio. An old craft from the Tibet, Nepal, India area. Basically, with the use of a tool called a gripfid, you open 4-ply cord and pass another cord through the opening. Change the order, location or direction of the piercing and you can produce fantastic patterns. Here are a few of the items made by our teacher, Michele O'Reilly.

First, two bracelets -
In my last post I said that we were having a hint of an early spring. It is no longer a hint. It is a fact. (I've lived here all my life, so I know things can/will change.) Spring is here.

Spring flowers are blooming. There are bright yellow daffodils along the expressway, forsythia are exploding in their golden glory, trees are budding, the willows are changing colors. Life is wonderful.

Speaking of changing color, tomorrow the Chicago River will turn green for the St Pat's Day parade. But they got a head-start at the fountain in the Daley Center Plaza.

Just in case you need to see what is in store for us, here is tonight's 7-Day Forecast.
Saturday, Abe and I were sitting at Tulum, an interesting little restaurant at Grand and Wolcott, when we saw very strange groups of costumed people running past pushing grocery shopping carts. The first one we thought was some sort of prank or dare, but they just kept coming. A quick Google search on "shopping cart chicago" resulted in "Chiditarod" (Ain't technology great?) Sure enough, the fund raiser was running right outside the restaurant. These photos are from last year's event. but you get the idea.

Dinner was at Salerno's on Grand at Racine, one of my favorites. The food is always great, we caught up on the news and had a good time. The only drawback was that, unknown to us when we got there, it was Thursday Trivia Contest night. That would not have been bad except that the director of the game felt that he needed to use an amplifier to reach all the players. There were only four teams playing and they were within 15 feet of him. TOO LOUD. And the questions were dumb. OK, they were obscure. Picky baseball stats, minor players on old TV shows. I'm much better at Jeopardy.
The hair is combed, not cut, spun and then knit into spectacular shawls. The goat hair yarn is called down and is frequently plied with silk. The shawls are so fine they can slide through a wedding ring. So they did. Amazing.

Today we had to take our reliable, sturdy Hoover vacuum to the repair shop. This isn't any old machine, we suspect that it is about 50 years old. It belonged to my grandmother, then me, and now Abraham. It has served us well. The shop says it is the bearings. They will try to pull it through, but can not make any promises.

Confession: This photo is off the web, it is not a photo of our actual vacuum. The resemblance is uncanny.

They all had a good time playing "Old Tunes" and we had a good time catching up and listening to the music. A relaxing time was had by all.
Today we went shopping for a new phone for Gene. We had a grand plan to get a G4 Android that I would use and pass my G3 on to him. Adding another smart phone to our account would add $30/month to the bill and seeing that Gene was only going to use it as a phone, it seemed wasteful. So I am still using the G3 and not able to do flash. Not a big loss, but it would have been nice. Sigh and shoulder shrug.
I'm trying to reform.

Today was investment club. It meets here once a month so straightening up can't fall to far behind. It was a good meeting, we have a new member and I got the tax info out before they could complain. Why yes, we do continue to do well.

Much progress is happening on the Hexapuffs. They are all the rage in the knitting world. Puffs are small (about 2.5 inches per side) hexagons made from sock weight yarn and the like. My goal is to make a "quilt" about 2 1/2' by 7 1/2' for the foot of the bed. It will need about 400 puffs. So far, I have about 180.

Stuff happens. Nothing exciting enough to post. Or maybe I just couldn't get around to it.

This time I'll try harder.

Let's start with a play I recently saw. It is "Clutter: The True Story of the Collyer Brothers Who Never Threw Anything Out" Well written, cleverly staged and creatively acted. It is the work of Mark Saltzman, who also writes for the Muppets. I am sure that the set designer had a grand time assembling the props that make up the brothers hoard.

After seeing the play, I searched the web (read Googled) for more about the Collyers. A strange family. The parents were first cousins, the father an eccentric ob/gyn, the mother a singer of opera. The filled house was possibly more packed than some that are shown on "Hoarders". Here are some photos of the actual Collyer NYC townhouse.

Ah yes, Georgia. But first, a word about the promised photos. They are trapped in my phone. I don't know how to extricate them. I now have a microSD card in the phone and new photos are stored there, but the ones that are in the camera's memory, are viewable on the phone but not movable to the SD. Bah, they are really nice too. Oh well, but I digress.

Many restaurant chains are available near us. On the way, we drove through one of the worst rain storms I've ever driven in, minimum visibility and maximum splash. I'm looking forward to the next one.

A good time was had by all.
knitting Chicago KAL

VALENTINE'S MEDICAL REPORT

I'm interrupting this travelogue to bring you a medical alert.

Here's the history...
2008 @ Valentine's Day, Gene had a triple bypass. Everything went well.
2009 @ Valentine's time, he needed more surgery to repair his sternum which had failed to heal correctly.
2010 @ Valentine's time he must have had something else to do.
2011 @ Valentines's Day he had a chest pain and off to the emergency room he went. The blood tests showed that there had not been a heart attack. He had the full routine, many EKGs, a stress test, an echo-cardiogram, and an angiogram. Nothing tragic was found. After many conferences with and among his doctors, it was decided to change his meds.

Gene is home again after a two night stay at Northwestern Memorial. He is feeling fine and thanks everyone for their kind thoughts. I wonder what he has planned for next Valentine's Day.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program...
knitting Chicago KAL

Road Trip - January, 2011

Once again, we took a road trip to join Gene’s high school reunion in Palm Beach.

When we left Chicago, the temperature was in the 20s, there was snow on the ground and a cold wave was on the way. I had no regrets leaving.

An uneventful drive brought us to our first stop in Columbus, Indiana. It is an interesting city, a Mecca of inventive architecture and design. Even the bridge at the highway exit is well designed.

There was still some snow, mostly the remains of clearing streets and parking lots.

The next day we crossed the Ohio river and went through a piece of Kentucky and into Tennessee and stopped in Normandy, TN, near Tullahoma, at the George Dickel distillery. The memory of their wonderful whisky brought us back to their company store. If you are ever able to taste their wares, do so. I’m sure that you will enjoy the smoooooth quality of their golden nectar.

When you are in Georgia and it is not peach season, you have to indulge in pecan treats. That brought us back to Ellis Bros. Pecans in Vienna GA. Their address was in our GPS from the last time we drove to Florida, for a very good reason. Their many variations on pecans are wonderful. Roasted and salted, praline crunch, coffee coated, spiced, pralines, chocolate (light or dark), you get the idea. You can even get them plain, just in the shell.

TO BE CONTINUED and PHOTOS ADDED
knitting Chicago KAL
