We couldn't release the collection we were planning, and for once we were being extra efficient and creating well in advance. Very unlike the organised chaos we usually thrive in!

Maintaining a normal routine was paramount for our mental health so your support has never meant more to us. We quickly worked out that we could carry on accepting and shipping orders, safe in the knowledge we weren't putting anyone at risk, including Matt who is in the high risk group and due for his first vaccine soon.

Even still, we released new jewellery when we could and did our best to bring a bit of joy to your jewellery boxes!

We launched a large Wounded Heart necklace, featuring a deep burgundy heart that is carefully heat-bent to accommodate a striking dagger charm with etched detail and a genuine Swarovski accent. We also released two new styles of custom necklaces too, in our swirly galaxy font with silver and gold accents, and our now best-selling retro font.

This is Halloween!

We don't need to tell you lot how much we love EVERYTHING to do with horror; in S&V HQ, it could be Halloween every day! It goes without saying really that October is our favourite month, and we celebrate the changing of the seasons and will take ANY excuse to dive headfirst into anything pumpkin spiced.

Obviously, October gives us the opportunity to bring out our year-round obsession with horror movies and revel in all things spooky and scary. This has reflected over the years in our jewellery too; we've done a collection with cruelty-free taxidermy, one for the spiritual and the celestial, and our personal favourite, the collection inspired by some of our favourite horror movies.

So, you could say we've done a fair share of horror and Halloween themed jewellery! Here are our ten favourite spooky jewellery pieces we make.

Inverted Cross dangly earrings

One of the cheapest in the list, but a year-round favourite with our customers. You guys love buying these, and we love making them! Available in matte black acrylic.

Black Cat necklace

Not particularly horror related but another personal favourite of ours, as we love black cats all year round! This one has glittery eyes and is the perfect accompaniment to any witch costume.

Overlook Hotel Necklace

Inspired by the infamous carpet from The Shining's Overlook Hotel, this necklace is one of our most popular ever. We love that you guys appreciate Kubrick's masterpiece as much as we do.

Personalised name necklace in dripping blood font

Whether it’s your name, a swear word, or an exclamation (“ARGH!” looks amazing, by the way), our personalised necklaces can accommodate words up to eight letters long. If you’d like two words, check out this listing.

Horror Hotel Earrings

It’s just not possible to pick between The Bates Motel or Overlook hotel so we made both hotel key fobs into earrings! And bag charms, if you’d prefer a keyring :)

Giallo Necklace

The word giallo means yellow and has come to be synonymous with the films inspired by Italian mystery novels that were infamous for their yellow covers. We couldn't resist basing this piece on our favourite tropes form an underappreciated sub-genre.

Prom Queen Necklace

Nobody will laugh at you if you're wearng this necklace. Don't be like Carrie White, accessorize with acrylic instead of pigs blood!

Clown's Balloon Necklace

You don't have to follow any menacing clowns into the sewer to get your hands on this. It features rope chain to connect the balloon and hand charms; we love a bit of mixed media.

Slasher Necklace

The simple slasher movie is like a comfort blanket at Halloween. We all know the virgin survives, the killer never dies and you never, ever run upstairs! This one features reflective acrylic to make it more realistic, but far less sharp than the real thing.

Skull Coasters

This year means celebrating Halloween a little differently for most of us. Just because youre stuck at home doesn't mean you can't rest your cocktails or punch on a kickass coaster though.

Come and get a Sugar Rush!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock (and honestly, we wouldn't blame you for that this year), you’ll know that earlier in 2020 we launched Sugar Rush, our club where for £30 per month you’ll get a completely exclusive piece of jewellery each month that you choose to buy. We initially did this through a well-known site that manages subscriptions to many businesses, but we didn’t feel it fair that there was a discrepancy in the price you paid each month due to tacked on VAT costs. So, we took it in-house and now you can purchase your jewellery each month at a time that suits you on the platform you're already familiar with.

When we say exclusive, it really is; you select whether you'd like a brooch or necklace, and the design will then be a complete surprise! Our first one was a pair of hands holding an anatomical heart. We wanted May’s piece to reflect some much-needed comfort as the world around took a very scary turn.

June’s piece was serendipitous as we wanted to do something cute but striking and it coincided with the photos of mice curled up in flowers that went viral. If you’ve not seen them, go search the internet for them and thank us later.

July came and some restrictions started to ease in the UK, and as the sun shone bright, we wanted our next piece to reflect how badly we all wanted a vacation! We’re quite lucky to live near the coast, and Whitstable can definitely offer us the sound of lapping waves but I'm not sure I can say I’ve ever seen a dolphin there though!

Each month is limited to 25 slots per month for now, so it really is exclusive. We won’t be reproducing these designs at any other time so sign up for Sugar Rush here if statement jewellery is your thing!

On the 29th of December we were faced with the most harrowing experience of our 8 year strong business. I had been in Manchester for Christmas with the family and once I set foot back through the door I was literally thrown straight back into work, as per the life of a self employed jeweller! Two hours later and our beloved VersaLaser was the victim of some incredibly poor luck.

We'd finished running a cutting job, turned the machine off, walked away and shut the workshop door. Twenty minutes and the vague smell of burning plastic alerted us to the fact that something was very, very wrong. We ran back out to be greeted with a fire originating from the machine. Luckily, aside from a couple of minor burns, we were both completely unharmed but the same could not be said of our laser cutter.

Having spoken to a couple of laser cutter providers at length, we can only assume that even though the machine was unplugged, there must have been a rogue ember underneath the honeycomb bed that grew and engulfed the whole machine. A further blow was a rather upsetting conversation with our insurance provider. Although we'd been told that our machinery would be covered when we started the policy, we have since been informed that our laser cutter is considered 'too specialist' to be covered for any amount. It was a rather expensive and difficult lesson, but one we'll take with us into the future.

Knowing that our entire business and everything we'd built was now in jeopardy was one of the hardest things we've ever been through. But what followed, was one of the biggest displays of human kindness I've ever witnessed.

One of our most faithful customers and friends Kitty suggested running a crowdfunding campaign to get us back up on our feet, and it was met with agreement from so many others that we felt bolstered enough to take the plunge. We started off with a modest target of £1000, sure that we would never meet it, but we soon surpassed that goal and as we got information from a local laser cutter provider about their second-hand Universal Laser (with a 50w laser tube, no less), we updated our goal to the £5000 that we'd need for the deposit.

To date, we are at £5210 with a total of 252 donations. What was the worst start to 2015 we could possibly imagine became a miracle that made us feel so loved, and more importantly, gave us back the motivation that we'd started to lose in the face of disaster.

I've said thank you a lot over our various social media platforms but it never feels significant enough. Without these donations, we would literally have had to walk away from our dream and the thing that we'd built from the ground up over 8 years of our lives. Without the donations, it would have been the end for us, but 252 unbelievably kind people helped us to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and carry on.

We ended up having another run of bad luck when it came to getting hold of the new machine and getting it up and running but that feels rather insignificant given everything that came before it. What's important is that for 3 days now, we've been able to catch up on the outstanding orders, and even design and make a couple of new pieces! It's something we'd started to take for granted but we're now so appreciative of the simple every-day tasks and the things that we're able to do again.

Here's the new machine in situ. It's hard to explain how we felt once we'd been able to set it up and start making jewellery again, words simply won't suffice.

The only thing left to say is, once again, thank you for your donations, support, kind words and unending enthusiasm for what we do. We've said it before but it's truer now than ever, without our customers, our business does not exist.

It's no surprise to most of our customers that we're a small business, with the emphasis very much on 'small'. We started Sugar & Vice almost ten years ago (!!!) and had worked from home ever since, moving only when circumstances necessitated it.

Over the years we've grown slowly and steadily. Expanding too quickly and expecting instant success are two of the things that we've seen kill small businesses, so we always took things at a gentler pace. After almost a decade and with very little room to manoeuvre left in our home, we chose to move out and into our very own studio space.

Finding somewhere in this economic climate (thanks, Brexit!) wasn't easy but after months of looking we finally found the perfect spot on a business complex that's only twenty minutes walk from home; very convenient since I still don't drive (I know, I know...)

It's been bloody hard work and has meant early starts and late finishes but it's so nice to finally have the perfect work/home balance. Plus, we've had a tonne of fun getting everything the way we want it. Here are some pics from the first couple of weeks.

As usual, our loyal and talented videographer was on hand to film the jewellery, and we even had some fun filming popcorn in slo-mo, and buying some fun props (which may or may not now live in our office....)

It's been a while since I've conducted any small business interviews so I thought I'd bring this recurring post back with a bang!

I discovered Baccurelli on Instagram, some time in the last year, and I've been admiring Meli's designs ever since. Meli has managed to capture a really awesome blend of fun and fab, and even in the short time I've been in contact with her, has been getting better, bolder and brighter and more innovative. Not only that but she is an inspiring and utterly lovely lady, with a beautiful soul that shines through in her work and communication.

In typical Baccurelli style, when I sent my interview questions over, Meli did something a little different and replied in the form of a video. I hope you enjoy her answers as much as I did!

Massive thanks to Meli for not only taking the time to answer my questions but for making lovely videos to share with y'all.

Last Wednesday morning we got an email from a lovely reporter at the BBC asking if we were free for an interview that afternoon, about our fortuitous brush with Miley Cyrus the week before. Since we're both quite naturally shy people who'd rather let the jewellery speak for itself, our instinct was to back away slowly and then throw the laptop into the sea, never speaking of it again.

Once we'd had chance to process the offer though, we knew we'd be idiotic to pass up an opportunity that so many other companies would jump at, and we were immensely flattered and grateful to have been asked at all! Three cups of tea later and there was a reporter and a cameraman in our workspace sitting us on the sofa, calming us down and getting ready to film.

Ten minutes later and the interview was done, and they spent some time filming us in our natural habitat, making jewellery and going about our daily lives. Although it was a daunting experience, it felt good to step outside our comfort zone and score some amazing exposure for the business. It's not something I'd like to do regularly but I'm honoured to have been asked, and proud of how we came across.

Here's the video in all it's awkward glory!

I feel like I'm constantly apologising for the radio silence here, and this post is no exception! I've been warring with myself over my promise to blog more, but also to only blog when I have something important or interesting to say, and since the last couple of months have been a blur of prep for the AW15 collection, along with designing a capsule collection for Halloween, this place has sadly fallen by the wayside.

And then last Thursday happened!

There I was minding my own business, when I happened on an instagram post, completely randomly, of a regram from Tish Cyrus; Miley's Mum. I quickly honed in on the ring she was wearing and realised it was one I'd made at my desk only a week earlier!

I quickly did a Google search on the lady who'd placed the order and it was none other than Miley Cyrus's stylist and the rings had gone to LA for Miley to wear during her Jimmy Kimmel appearance. Rocking a gorgeous outfit that would make most folks blush, there she was.

If we had been asked to compile a list of dream celebs who we'd want to wear out pieces, Miley would definitely top the list. She's a talented, eccentric, ballsy, kind-hearted, open-minded individual who also represents a lot of what we stand for so to see her in our designs is a dream come true and we wish her all the best!

I moved to Canterbury from Manchester in 2007 and have spent the last 8 years looking for somewhere that felt like home. 3 years ago, Matt and I moved into a lovely bungalow, flanked by retirees, which definitely suits our pace of life! Getting to live with my best friend and business partner is not only convenient but a lot of fun at times.

The property we're in has a summerhouse out back but because we'd spent the last few Summers working solidly we hadn't had the time or inclination to use it for anything other than storage, which was a crying shame! At the start of the Summer we made it our mission to create a relaxing space that we could utilise throughout the warmer months. I wish I'd had the foresight to take "before" pictures, but you'll have to make to with the "after" ones.

We did the whole thing on a budget of around £200, which included a chimenea! Here's what we did...

We invested in a Moroccan style lamp that gives it some much needed atmosphere of an evening!

To match that we bought some Moroccan inspired string lights, decked out the ceiling in purple fabric to hide the rather unattractive roof and popped some ribbon around the beams. We also bought a wall hanging to hide some of the boring white wall.

Halfway there! We were incredibly lucky to find 3 garden chairs and two dining chairs for £30 at a local furniture bric-a-brac store!

Who doesn't want the opportunity for miniature Summer disco's, right? I thought so.

The chimenea was the perfect way to be able to use the space at night too. We just need to remember to light those all important citronella candles!

It's become a perfect space for chilling out and reading a good book.

We've spent the last couple of weeks putting the finishing touches to it in our spare time, including this tassel garland that we made and hung yesterday.

And no summer house is complete without a ukulele and a unicorn!

There are still a few things left to do but otherwise we now have a perfectly serviceable Summer space that will see lots of use throughout the season and beyond. People don't often talk about the downsides to working from home but cabin fever is definitely one of them! We're incredibly grateful to now have a place to chill out and separate work from home. Bring on the sun!

Massive apologies for the lack of posts of late. Between working, finding time to be creative (both in and out of the business) and maintaining a modest social life, it hasn't left me much time for blogging. Excuses aside, I haven't been bitten by the blogging urge since our last, rather heavy, post. Until now...

I have one very important thing to say with this post and that's THANK YOU! The last blog post was very dear to us and was a tough one to write, and then to release on the World, so your response was everything. Annoyingly, as our blog is hosted directly on the website, we're not given the opportunity to reply to comments so I wanted to take this time to say that we heard you, and we love you. I'm bowled over (but never surprised) by the love, appreciation and understanding that our supporters have to offer. It never fails to humble me, and to paraphrase Placebo, "without you, we're nothing."

I have a few more posts that are currently percolating, on a range of business-related topics, as well as a fun post about a home-improvement project, but for now I'll leave you with a run-down of some of our newest pieces to lighten the mood, and to show you what's been inspiring us lately!

I've seen variations of this blog post circulating for a number of years now but after receiving some less than favourable feedback this morning, I felt compelled to add my own voice to the mix.

As anyone reading this blog post will already know, Sugar & Vice is a small, two-person operation. We work very hard and spend a lot of money to cultivate a professional image, one that sometimes belies the humble reality, but at the heart of this business is just two hard-working souls who aren't immune to taking harsh criticism on board. We're grown-ups, we learn from our mistakes on a daily basis and have developed a thicker skin over the years but sometimes something happens that makes me want to speak up and in this case I want to address our pricing structure, and that of most of the artisans that I know too.

I am the first to acknowledge that in recent years, our pricing structure has evolved and many of our pieces are more expensive than they used to be. There are a couple of reasons for this. Firstly, with each year that passes we have one more year of valuable experience and practised skill under our belt. As with any job, when you gain experience and get better at what you do, you're in a position to ask for a raise. Same thing. Our pieces aren't staying the same and getting more expensive, our pieces are getting better and as a result are worth more.

Secondly, and most importantly, as we've grown, so have our expenses. When we first started out we weren't even earning enough to have to pay tax. Ah, those were the true salad days! Now, we pay almost 30% of what we earn in taxes and national insurance, we have to buy larger quantities of materials, we have to buy better materials and we have to provide a certain level of service, all of which boasts an increased price tag to us, some of which we have to pass on to our customers in order to simply be able to live.

To make it easy to digest, here's a breakdown of how we come to decide on the price of any piece;

1. Taking into account the 8 years of experience and skill that allowed us to design the piece - Our designs aren't something just anyone can do. In my head that sounds arrogant, but it's simple fact. When I invite a plumber into my home it's because I can't fix my broken sink myself, so I'd expect to pay them accordingly. Like any job that requires a level of skill, that's valuable and has to be accounted for.

2. The time involved - We laser cut in-house so that means that instead of out-sourcing and paying for the job, we have to take the time to set up the cut files and actually cut them. For designs that incorporate many different pieces and a variety of colours, this can take quite some time, but it allows us to offer custom options on pretty much everything we do and we get to over-see the quality of the techniques used, which can often change the over-all look of a finished piece for the better. (Attention to detail is incredibly important to us!) We also have to assemble the chains, put the designs together very carefully, allow the glue/chemicals time to dry/bond, hot-foil print the box it goes in, organise the packaging, etc. The whole thing can be a very lengthy process and as the old saying goes "time is money".

3. The cost of materials - How much did the acrylic or wood cost? Some finishes have to be imported which incur vast customs fees. How much did the chain and the components cost? Some are more expensive than others, some are difficult to source, gold can be pricier than silver sometimes, etc. How much were the glue or chemicals required and how much were the apparatus needed to keep us safe while handling them? How much is the laser cutter itself? The list can seem endless at times.

4. Other hidden costs - As a business, we have to pay tax by law. That means that assuming we earn 50% profit on each piece we sell (after re-ordering materials, website hosting, photoshoots, PayPal fees, payment processor fees, newsletter software fees, website gallery fees, Etsy/Folksy/Rakuten fees, monthly payments on the laser cutter itself, etc.) we lose nearly 30% of our profits to tax and national insurance. 30% of 50% is a huge and often disheartening dent on a small businesses income.

To make it even easier, here's an approximate calucation.

Say we charge £20 for a necklace with a UK P&P cost of £3.25 and the necklace takes two people one hour to make;

Acrylic - £2.50
Metal components - £2.50
Box with in-house printing (necessary to protect the necklace in transit) - £1.20
Padded envelope, receipt (required by law), address label - £0.30
Labour time - incalculable
Time to package and post - incalculable
PayPal/payment processor fees - £1.19-£1.50
Postage - £0.93 - £3.20 (depending on the size of the parcel)

The most favourable calculation would leave us with £14.63. Almost 30% off that would be taxed, leaving us with £10.27. Between two people! The worst-case-scenario calculation makes me want to run away from my own brain.

Then consider all the weekly hours spent replying to emails, promotion and correspondence via social media, sending invoices, stock-takes, various paperwork, properly disposing of used acrylic and waste, post office runs, buying stickers, sweets and business cards to brighten up packages etc, none of which we get paid for.

So there we are. It's not a pretty breakdown, but it's an honest one and I thrive on being as transparent as possible, both in my personal and working life. We're not a big business so we can't operate like one, but this means we can be personable and reachable and available.

On a very personal level, obviously bad feedback hurts, but as a level-headed grown-up I fully acknowledge the need to understand that what you do will NEVER appeal to everyone. Unless you're Beyonce. Accepting that nugget of useful information is liberating, but taking it for granted can lead to bad business ethics and so this is our balance. We're not a couple of untouchable Scrooge McDuck figures that laugh into our champagne whilst sitting on our thrones of an evening, we're just two approachable people who work very long hours trying their best to create things that will make people smile, which makes us smile. And that's the only way we know how to run a business.

Never be afraid to define your worth on your own terms and remember that if someone can't see your value, or the value in what you do, then don't let it hang like an albatross around your neck, there are plenty of people who do see your value, even if they're not as vocal.

Loads of love,
-Sarah & Matt.

We took our inspiration from vintage tea parties and aimed to bring you a pastel pretty, totally tasty collection of pieces that are much daintier than our usual fare. Most of the pieces are subtle enough to wear every day and the colour palette is perfect for Spring. We hope you like!

We get a lot of emails on a daily basis and around 50% of those are from people inquiring about commissioning a unique piece of jewellery. We're lucky enough to own our own high-end laser cutter so we've done so many commissions over the years that we've literally lost count. Most are something very personal to the wearer, some are private jokes, lots are images of pets and one even featured an anatomically correct penis! Nothing is off the table.

Because it's something we get asked about so often, I thought I'd write a little blog about the process of commissioning a piece of pet jewellery from us. Firstly, we'll ask you for the dimensions of the piece. Everyone is completely different and so what might be dainty to you can be a statement piece to someone else so getting the correct size of the piece is incredibly important.

Secondly, we'll ask for a good quality image from you. Often, pets are hard to photograph so it can be helpful to send multiple photos but always detail which pose/stance you'd like the pet to be in and whether you'd like the whole thing or just the face, etc.

Once you've given us all the details including size, colour scheme and chain length, we'll then send you a direct invoice and take payment up front. Then we get to work on a design. Design work can take us anywhere between 1 and 4 weeks depending on how busy we are but we always try to get it done as soon as humanly possible!

At this point, if you've requested a proof, we'll send you our design for approval, otherwise we'll get stuck right in and make a wearable piece based on your exact specifications.

So, finally, here's the checklist of information you need to provide when emailing for a commission:

1) A verbal outline of the piece you'd like.
2) A picture of the item/pet/idea that you want
3) An idea of the size of the finished piece
4)The length and colour of the chain you'd like
5) The colour scheme of the pendant/brooch/earrings
6) A rough deadline (it may not always be possible for us to meet the deadlines but we always try to comply)

Sometimes it may feel like a lengthy process but we always simplify everything as much as we can and we'll work as hard as possible with you to make sure you get the perfect jewellery. Our pricing structure can differ wildly depending on size, materials and complexity of the design so be sure to email for a full quote if you've got something in mind! We can't wait to hear from you :)

I had the incredibly rare opportunity last weekend to spend two entire days by myself in a work-free environment. Now, as someone who loves their work this isn't something I experience often, usually through my own design, but everyone needs a break now and then and so I jumped at the chance for some peace and quiet.

Instead of vegging out in front of Netflix (an activity I frequently indulge in), I opted to pop into Canterbury and buy some supplies for a craft project that I'd been inspired to do based on some Pinterest finds. An hour later and I had the following:

Glue gun (already owned, bought from eBay)
Glue sticks (Bostik, available from most craft stores)
Frame (Wilkinsons, £3)
Toys (Poundland, £1 a bag)
Spray paint (Wilkinsons, approximately £3)
Aida (eBay)
Thread (eBay)
Glitter card (Sainsburys, £2)

After hot gluing all the toys onto the frame, I spray painted it over a number of hours. I used 3 coats to get an even finish and left approximately 45 minutes so it was touch-dry between each coat.

Once the frame was drying I realised I'd need something to go in it! A quick search on Pinterest and I'd found a pretty straight-forward Daria cross stitch pattern so I got to work.

The stitching took around 7 hours all told so I used that time to watch some trashy movies and it flew by. Once the cross stitch was finished I measured and cut some glittery card to size, to use as the border for my frame.

I'm really pleased with the result and am already planning my next frame/cross stitch combo. Have you guys done anything crafty lately? :)

The Abstract Collection was a personal challenge for us. While Matt has a firm background in art, I'm usually the one found flailing over a pot of coffee because my ludicrously ambitious ideas won't translate to the screen in the way I want them to. We make a good creative team though, and since we'd been playing it safe and making pieces that we knew would work, we wanted to extend our abilities with a geometric based set of jewellery. The designs we settled on came after weeks of arguments, breakdowns and failed attempts as symmetrical patterns aren't something that comes naturally to either of us, but we were incredibly happy with the final results, and it seems most of you were too. Phew!

We've collated some of the pictures that our wonderful subscribers posted on Instagram so you can see them here. Let us know what you think!

We're in the process of designing the exclusive item for the next collection that lanches in March so keep your eyes peeled for a new box that you'll be able to sign up for next month :)

I recently asked Maxine a few questions about her business and her craft, and here is what she had to say.

S : Tell me about Little Miss Delicious. When did you start and what was your biggest motivation?

M : I’ve been making jewellery for as long as I can remember, but Little Miss Delicious only came about while I was doing my law degree. I missed having a creative outlet so began designing jewellery again as a hobby on the side, but soon people were stopping me on the street to compliment my jewellery and friends were asking if I could make things for them, so I set up an Etsy store not really expecting much. I ended up getting my first order an hour later, and haven't looked back since! I find it very fulfilling watching a small lump of beige coloured clay turn into a cute cookie or ice cream, and having complete freedom over the process and the look of the end result.

I never imagined 5 years later LMD would even still exist nevermind be running it full time! It really is a dream come true to be able to spend every day doing what I love.

What's your favourite moment since starting the company? And what's the biggest obstacle you've overcome?

My favourite moment was definitely having my jewellery featured in LOOK Magazine last year. It was one I always used to buy growing up, and it was the first time I finally felt like I'd made the right choice going self employed - and the first time my family realised just how big LMD had become, which was a nice feeling!

I suffer from a chronic illness called interstitial cystitis, which is kind of like having a kidney infection but 100 times more painful and it never goes away. I have to have a lot of bed days because of the pain, and sometimes struggle walking around due to dizziness. It's been really hard adjusting to life with it since it only started again a few years ago, but running LMD means I can take bed days if I need to - I just take my work with me! It's not an obstacle I've quite overcome yet, but one that I continue battling and I like to think I've definitely racked up more wins than my IC has!

Where does most of your inspiration come from?

I’ve always had a huge sweet tooth so most of my designs are based on my favourite foods! My inspiration can come from anything, food I might be craving, customer suggestions and even just a colour combination I see in a picture, but my main inspiration is my love of all things cute and tasty. I've recently started venturing outside of food based designs for the first time, and the response has been amazing! While the designs haven't been specifically food based, they've still reflected the signature bright, playful and fun nature of my brand, and I'm looking forward to coming up with lots more new ideas for the future. It's gotten to the point where I always carry a notebook around with me so I can jot ideas down no matter where I am or when inspiration hits!

What's the best part of your working day?

Despite most people's perceptions of handmade designers, my day tends to be mostly admin based. I spend the majority of the working day replying to emails, doing accounts and keeping on top of social media. This means I get the main bulk of my creative work done at night, and that's by far my favourite, most productive time!

I've always been a night owl, and I'm grateful to be in a position where I can fit my job around that - even if it does mean I accidentally send the occasional email at 4am! Because of the varied nature of my products and the stages of production for jewellery items alone, each day is very different which is great in itself as it means I never get the chance to get bored and continually challenge myself.

What's your favourite LMD piece?

It's hard to pick a favourite, because they all hold a special place in my heart! Most pieces have a story behind them, especially the latest limited edition collections. The Woodland Creatures Collection is inspired by my African Pygmy Hedgehog, and the Tasty Tattoo Collection in my memory of my grandad, who gave me my love of tattoos. Because of this, my favourite is probably the Sweet Swallow Necklace, which is based on both his and my swallow tattoos.

Do you have any advice for creative startups?

Starting your own business is not easy, there is a lot of hard work and long hours involved. However, the more work you put into it, the stronger your business will be, so it all pays off!

The first step is to make sure it is something you really want to do and something you are very passionate about as it's very difficult to establish a stable income, so be prepared for some hard times unless you have lots of funding right from the start.

When you're running your own business the most important thing is just to promote as much as possible, and so it is important to consider this when first starting your business. Places like Facebook and Twitter are great for that, especially if you get your friends to invite everyone they know to join too. Once the ball starts rolling, you'd be amazed at how much interest you can generate!

Finally, what are your plans for the brand, moving forward?

I have lots of exciting plans for LMD over the next couple of months, including lots of limited edition collections, new designs and new stock! Make sure you like Little Miss Delicious on Facebook and follow us on Twitter and Instagram to keep up to date with the latest news :)

The collection also coincided with our very first All Things Nice jewellery subscription box. The first of its kind, our all-laser-cut boxes are quarterly, providing you with a box of £60+ worth of brand new jewellery and accessories every 3 months, along with an exclusive piece that's not available ANYWHERE else.

We were blown away with the positive response and absolutely cannot wait to start sending out the next boxes in just over a months time. For now though, here are some pictures of the Witching Hour boxes that you guys shared on instagram. Thanks so much for your kind thoughts and constant love and support, that's precisely why we strive to innovate like we do!

We're a company that wears our heart on our sleeve and in the past that's bitten us on the creative ass, as occasionally some companies have seen fit to copy our sneak peeks and produce similar jewellery before we've even been able to launch ours! That's why we've decided to keep the big reveal under wraps until the eleventh hour, instead giving you a glimpse of the artwork that's caught our eye and provided some great inspiration for us during the design process.

We first came across the work of Emma a.k.a Luna Photography a couple of years ago when she was recommended to us personally. Although we like to be as self sufficient as possible we'd admitted defeat on the photography front and had been looking for someone to take hi-res images of our jewellery for a while. As soon as we saw Emma's work we were, quite frankly, in love, and it was a pretty easy decision to ask her to be a part of the S&V family.

As an outsider, it's been wonderful to watch Emma and her work grow, and it's always exciting to see new images as she's exceptionally creative as well as having a keen eye for a well-framed shot. It's always so nice to develop not just a good working relationship with someone, but a friendship too, and Emma has been a ray of sunshine, both artistically and personally. I got the chance to ask her some questions about her business recently, so here's what she had to say.

S : Tell me about Luna Photography.

E : As an alternative person myself, Luna Photography has naturally evolved into the perfect place for those looking for something different from their lifestyle photography. My personality and style means that I can see the distinctive and original vision that these clients have, and turn them into beautiful images. There are a lot of photographers out there but clients, especially brides and grooms, now realise that photography doesn't have to follow the norm.

What was your biggest motivation to become a photographer?

I have always wanted to be arty, but I cannot draw for the life of me! Through photography I found a way to be creative and display the thoughts and ideas that I have in my mind. I started photographing as a hobby, first friends bands and then bands at the university. I had some amazing opportunities, photographing bands like My Chemical Romance, Killswitch Engage and NOFX. From that I decided that I needed to learn more so I enrolled in an HND at college. The biggest motivation was to finally be able to create what was in my head.

What's been your proudest moment since starting the company?

There's been so many it's hard to define the proudest moment. I like to think of these moments as milestones on the journey of the business. Any time that a bride tells me how much they love the images of their wedding day or a woman has said that the images from a photoshoot has made them feel beautiful, I can't help but swell with pride. Other proud moments though are things like my images making magazine covers and publications I could have never imagined possible.

And what's the biggest obstacle you've overcome?

There have been many obstacles but I think the biggest has been to overcome myself. I have suffered with major depression since the age of 14 and anyone that has experienced this will know the overwhelming feeling of self-doubt and worthlessness. There have been many times that I have wanted to throw everything away and give up but with the help of my husband and friends I haven't, each time gaining more drive to succeed.

Do you find inspiration in other people's work or is it all organic?

I definitely research a lot for lighting styles and poses but I also like to mix things up. For the pin-up photography, a lot of the work is re-creation of a particular style but for a lot of my other work I do what feels right and looks good.

You cover a lot of bases, such as weddings, brand photography and pin-up shoots. Is there anything you'd love to do that you haven't found time for yet?

Underwater photography! I've been trying to organise an underwater shoot for ages but obviously there is so much involved, the correct equipment and underwater housings, a pool large enough that has time free and model that will be comfortable in the water. I'm sure though, that when I finally get it sorted it will be amazing!

What's your favourite event/shoot so far?

I would have to say shooting with Ulorin Vex. Since I started photography, I have followed and idolised her work. Sali and I were fortunate enough to get some time shooting with her when she came back to the UK for a visit and I am so glad to say that not only was she lovely but also an amazing model.

Do you have any advice for creative startups or budding photographers?

I think the best advice is to be true to yourself. Don't try and create a business based on something just because it's cool or popular that you don't believe in because it doesn't last. It's hard work and you have to give your heart and soul but in the end it will all show in your work and that's what will draw people to you.

Finally, what are your plans for the company, moving forward?

Simply for the business to keep growing as it has. The studio has been undergoing a makeover and I'm hoping to have a great launch!

Massive thanks to Emma for taking the time to answer my questions. You can find her on Facebook, read her blog, or check out her website at these links!

Last weekend I took a train to London to help film our latest promo. With Jamie from Fingercuff Productions on board to wield the camera again, we were all set. We spent Friday evening watching the intro's for True Blood and American Horror Story : Coven in order to make sure we were on the same page, creatively, and we used that time to search high and low for the perfect music to use too.

After we formulated some cohesive ideas, we spent Saturday and Sunday filming the meat of the promo. We decided we wanted it to be shorter and snappier than the first two, but also a little more ambitious and atmospheric. Plus, we wanted it to be a whole lot darker and fully reflect the jewellery in the collection.

We had a fun few days and captured a lot of footage, so I've now left it in Jamie's capable hands and cannot wait to see the finished edit! Here are some photo's that I took during filming. I hope you enjoy!

Those of you that follow some of our social media accounts or know us personally will undoubtedly already be aware of the troubles we've been having lately but I'm going to try and address it as candidly as possible here. It came to our attention that a number of Chinese sellers on Ali Express are replicating our designs and re-producing them for other people to sell. I don't think I need to tell you how heartbreaking that is for an independent designer to have to go through!

As a tiny, boutique brand this is worrying for us on a number of levels. Firstly, there's the concern that people may assume they're buying a genuine piece of Sugar & Vice jewellery as they've seen the design here. We've had reliable reports that the quality of the dupes is pretty appalling and so it's understandable that we'd be concerned about customers confusing it with our work. To put your mind at ease, we issue every single one of our necklaces with a branded tag, if it doesn't have the tag it isn't genuine so please report it to us.

Secondly, it's hurtful to us as most of the fakes are being sold using our photo's, which is doubly annoying as we've paid to have them taken and the copyright lies with Luna Photography, who have found themselves an unwitting victim as well.

Finally, if someone who'd never heard of Sugar & Vice stumbled upon multiple listings for the same item, they would naturally assume both were manufactured in China and that we were simply selling at a higher price. Whatever the reasons, things like this can be hugely damaging for a small brand and that's why we've been working so hard to try and stamp it out.

As for the issue of quality, a mass produced item simply cannot compare to the love and attention that goes into a hand-made piece.Yes, all of our work is produced by a laser cutter but we work tirelessly to source the highest quality components and assemble everything by hand. We can offer follow up service which includes repairs and replacement chains if necessary; a service that would never be possible when buying from China, or a re-seller. We also like to think that the experience of buying from us is a pleasant one, and we always want to put ourselves out there so you can get to know us, so you can see and talk to the people you help support.

As a consumer, you can help too. If you see a small companies designs being sold by anyone other than the designer themselves or a recognised stockist, then please take some time to alert them. Every little helps, and attempting to stem the flow of counterfeit items is beneficial to the seller and the consumer in the long term.

I'd also like to acknowledge that we're not alone in this. Countless other companies have also been the victims of the same infringement and we've also received a great amount of help from other small business owners, as well as from our customers. In some small way, it's nice to be able to band together. Without your love and support, the last week would have been even more unpleasant so it's safe to say that the S&V Family is a big part of of why we do what we do. We can comfort ourselves knowing that our support network is incredible and you guys make everything we do worthwhile. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!

If you're a frequent visitor to the site then you'll no doubt have noticed two recent changes. The first is that we now offer Subscription boxes and the second is that we've launched our new collection!

Let's take a few minutes to explain the subscription element! The steadfast S&V fans among you may remember our incredibly popular Lucky Dips. We chose to retire the Lucky Dips earlier in the year as, because many of the same customers kept buying them, we had to tailor each one to suit the customer so as not to incur duplicates. As you can imagine, over time it started to defeat the object of a Lucky Dip and became a little like a normal order. Being the forward thinking individuals that we are though, we found a way around that issue. Subscription boxes!

They're released quarterly to coincide with each new collection that we launch which means that because each of the boxes will contain brand new pieces there will be no chance of duplicating jewellery that you already own! It still involves massive savings and you'll also get a completely exclusive piece of jewellery that only the subscribers will have access to. You won't be able to get your hands on it any other way!

The nitty-gritty is all pretty simple. If you subscribe we'll take an automatic payment from you every 3 months and a couple of weeks after that you'll receive a box of themed jewellery and trinkets, until such time as you wish to cancel the subscription. Easy peasy, right? We hope you'll love what's in store.

The second big piece of news is that our latest collection dropped last Friday and you guys are loving it so far! We thought we'd take elements of recent trends, a little touch of the 90's and combine it with the Autumnal/Halloween season that's fast approaching and BAM, a collection was born. It's a little darker than recent collections, a little edgier too, but we think it's still got the S&V spark that's grown with us over the years.

With The Witching Hour Collection, we've got pentagrams, ravens, skulls and crosses, there's still lots of choice and hopefully something for everyone. What's your favourite piece?

We were so in love with our pink feathery friend that we couldn't help but create a statement piece using the same design. We added some palm trees for extra tropical flair! No-one can accuse us of doing anything by halves!

As we had happened to get hold of some rather special marbled ivory acrylic, we decided it looked so much like shell that we would be daft not to turn it into shell charms! A bit of engraving and painted detail later and we'd come up with this super cute Natural Shell Necklace to add to our Tropical Collection! It reminds us of surfer babes and lounging under leafy palm trees on picturesque beaches.

It's designed to look like the real thing, only cutesier, girlier and more befitting of a land-locked mermaid.

In this case the lovely model is the ravishing Rose Desire and the talented photographer is our trusted lady-pal Emma of Luna Photography.
Welcome to the brand spanking new Sugar & Vice website and blog!

I'm Sarah and I make up 50% of S&V and my business partner and best friend Matt makes up the remaining 50%. He's in charge of logistics, custom design work, accounting and web design. We share laser cutting and assembly duties and I deal with the rest of the design work, the social media management and most of the correspondance so if you've spoken to us online before, then chances are it was me you were talking to! In addition to that, I'll now be blogging a few times a month to help bring a more personal touch to our little jewellery company.

Building the new website has been a rather long and arduous road, as neither of us had any prior web design knowledge and it had been years since building the last one, so the whole thing was a rather steep learning curve. Seeing it all come together makes my heart swell with pride though, we soldiered on and I like to think the long days and late nights, (and occasional tears) were more than worth it!

We value our customers so much and so we've tried to make the experience of shopping with us more enjoyable and easier than ever before. We've introduced a much shorter checkout process, and the option to pay without having to go via PayPal too. We've also stripped everything back meaning that there are no distractions and we're letting the jewellery speak for itself. The introduction of a Lookbook means that we can also add more modelled pictures than ever, giving you an idea of how to style your S&V pieces, and what they might look like when worn. It's an exciting time and we hope you like the changes as much as we do.

On my blogging journey, I'm hoping to incorporate behind the scenes pictures, new product updates, things that inspire us and also interviews with and introductions to other brand owners and creative types. There may also be the occasional (frequent) cat photo. Because we like cats. A lot.

If you've got any questions, suggestions or feedback, please do leave us a comment or send us an email. We thrive on contact with our customers and fans so don't be shy!

Lots of love,
