✨ MY GLOW IS MINE

You talk about filters on all of my clips,

Like I’m hiding behind edited pics.

But here’s the truth; simple and clear,

No filter can create what doesn’t live here.

It can smooth the skin, brighten the face,

But it cannot give a soul its grace.

Because real beauty doesn’t begin outside,

It lives in the heart you choose to guide.

In a mind at peace, in a spirit that’s kind,

In the strength to leave draining energy behind.

If your soul is heavy, it always shows,

No matter how perfect the picture glows.

But when your heart is clean, your intentions pure,

There’s a light in you that feels so sure.

It shows in your smile, your words, your way,

In the calm you carry every day.

No filter can build it, no edit can fake,

It’s a glow from within that nothing can shake.

So say what you want, I won’t pretend

My beauty is real, it comes from within.

Because when your soul is pure… you glow. ✨

जीवनाच्या वाटेवर

कधी ऊन–सावली🏖🏝, कधी धुक्याची चादर,🌁

कधी वेदनेची धार, कधी आनंदाची 😃किनार…

त्या प्रत्येक वळणावर

एक हात नेहमी माझ्या खांद्यावर, तो तू.👫

तू मित्र, तू तत्वज्ञ,

तू शब्दांमधला अर्थ,

तू शांततेतलं धीर,

आणि अंधारातली प्रकाशरेषा.🌃

वादळांच्या काळात🧖

मी कोसळले तरी

तुझ्या एका शब्दाने

छातीतील भीती विरघळली,

आणि पुन्हा चालायला पायांना दिशा मिळाली.👣

तू केवळ मित्र नाहीस,

तू माझ्या विचारांच्या शेतात

पहिल्या पावसासारखा उतरतोस

मनातल्या धुळीला शांत करत,🧘‍♀️

गोंधळलेल्या प्रश्नांना अर्थ देत.🤹‍♂️

मनापासून एकच इच्छा

तुझं आयुष्य तितकंच सुंदर असावं

☮PEACE BELONGS TO YOU

We spend our days

polishing our words,

straightening our posture,

editing ourselves

for an imagined audience.

But the ones we try to impress

are only a handful

some who love us regardless,

some who judge us no matter what.

And beyond them

there stretches a vast sea

of silent faces,

neither for us nor against us,

simply passing by.

Yet we burn ourselves

for the warmth of a few opinions

while ignoring

the cool stillness

of the indifferent many.

Let them watch, or not.

Let them praise, or not.

Their gaze is theirs

our peace is ours.🙏

Each morning with the sunrise, you rise and face the day,

With strength, with love, with courage guiding your way.

Through hours long and weary, your spirit stays so true,

Each selfless act you give is love in all you do.

Your hands may bear the marks of work, both strong and kind,

A symbol of devotion, of heart and soul combined.

You’ve built for us a home, a haven safe and warm,

A shelter filled with love that weathers every storm.

I’m proud of you, my love, your courage shines so bright,

You lift me when I falter, you are my steady light.

I trust you with my dreams, my soul, my heart’s embrace,

Forever grateful, blessed by your endless grace.

And every day I choose you, as you have chosen too,

It Was Never About the Big Things

💫IT WAS NEVER ABOUT THE BIG THINGS

And one day, you realise,

it was never about the big things.

It was always the little moments

that felt like magic. ✨

The simplest seconds that made you smile.

The genuine experiences that filled your heart with quiet joy.

No filter there, no thought too deep,

Just laughter crashing in a heap.

It was the conversations that restored your faith in kindness and compassion.

The hugs you wished would last a little longer.

The people who felt like sunshine. ☀️

They warmed my world and made it shine.

It was the stillness, the peace, the soft reminders

of how beautiful this world can be.

A bloom, a breeze, a drifting leaf,

Each moment brief, yet full belief.

In the morning light that warmed your spirits

how your favourite song came on at just the right time.

The laughter that lingered,

long after the moment had passed.

Warm hands wrapped around a cup of tea,

laughter drifting through an open window,

the soft weight of a blanket

on a sleepy afternoon.

A handwritten note,

a look that said “I understand,”

a stranger’s smile

on a heavy day.

It was the hands you held,

the tears someone gently let you cry,

the quiet strength

of simply being there.

The comfort of silence

with someone who needs no words,

and the joy of knowing

you are loved exactly as you are.

The way someone remembered your favourite flower,

or checked in

when your heart felt heavy.

The quiet “I’m here,”

without needing to say a word.

The shared silences

that spoke volumes.

The soft “good morning” texts

that made you feel thought of.

The tiny gestures;

a glance, a smile, a touch,

that reminded you

you were never alone.

It was in the memories

made in ordinary moments;

the ones you hold onto

when everything else fades.

It was never about the big things. 🤍🧿

It was always the little ones;

the ones that meant everything.

Guru Purnima Reflections - Ode to my Gurus

🌕 Guru Purnima Reflections 🌕

On 10th July, we celebrated Guru Purnima — a sacred day to honour the wisdom and grace of our Gurus.

As an offering of gratitude, I bow first to my Mother and Father, my very first Gurus who shaped my values.

I then offer my heartfelt pranams to all my spiritual Gurus —

Swami Chinmayanandaji, Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji, Avdhoot Shivanand Ji, Brahmakumari Shivaniji, Guru Premanandji Maharaj, Shri Aniruddhacharya Ji Maharaj, and most recently, Guru Satyendranathji of Nasik — each of whom has illuminated my life in unique and profound ways.

But Gurus come in many forms — our friends, strangers, even our children. Life constantly teaches us through every interaction. We only need the humility to learn.

As a humble offering, I wrote this poem 🙏🏻

🕊️ Ode to My Gurus 🕊️

In shadows deep where doubts reside,

A gentle hand, a steady guide.

From “gu” — the darkness, “ru” — the light,

A guru’s touch turns wrong to right.

In silent steps or thunder's roar,

My Gurus came to open doors.

With words or glances, smiles or tears,

They whispered truth beyond the years.

My mother told me tales of God,

My father taught each sacred chant.

From chants and questions, deep and true,

A divine light within me grew.

They taught me not just mantras old,

But how to love, to trust, be bold.

To seek the self in all around,

And stand in peace on shaky ground.

My Gurus, Not just a teacher, but a flame,

That kindles the soul beyond mere name.

With wisdom deep like ancient seas,

They help us shed our fears with ease.

Some wore robes, some walked unseen,

Some were stern, and some serene.

Some were storms, and some the breeze,

But all helped bring my soul to ease.

Through winding paths of spirit’s quest,

They lead us onward, never rest.

A beacon bright when nights grow long,

In their embrace, we find our song.

I bow to them, both near and far,

Each one a guide, a living star.

For in their grace, I found my way —

A heart that learns, each blessed day.

A sacred bond, both strong and true,

Of trust and grace between me and you.

More than knowledge, love imparts,

The key that unlocks restless hearts.

In every heart the light does gleam,

Awakened by the guru’s dream.

A guide, a friend, through dark and sun,

Until our journey’s whole and done.

Ashadhi Ekadashi – A Sacred Day of Devotion and Reflection

Ashadhi Ekadashi, also known as Devshayani Ekadashi, will be observed on Sunday, July 6, 2025.

The day marks the start of Lord Vishnu's four-month celestial rest.

I wrote this poem today inspired by this holy day.

Ashadhi Ekadashi – A Sacred Day of Devotion and Reflection

In Ashadha’s moonlit, sacred sky,

Devotion wakes as spirits fly,

Fasting not just of food, but speech,

Of ego too—what hearts must teach.

A time to turn the gaze within,

To cleanse the soul, repent all sin,

To walk the path of thought and prayer,

And feel the Lord’s still presence there.

For Chaturmas, the holy tide,

Begins today, with faith as guide.

A season deep in thought and song,

Where right and truth to hearts belong.

Through Vithoba’s land, the pilgrims tread,

With saffron flags and hearts outspread.

To Pandharpur, they sing and sway,

In joy and tears, they find their way.

So let us bow and rise anew,

With every breath, with all we do—

On Ekadashi, bright and high,

Where heaven touches earth and sky

On Shayani Ekadashi's moonlit night,

You sing His praises from dusk to light.

With folded hands and hearts so wide,

Devotion flows like an endless tide.

The stars bear witness, calm and bright,

To souls awakened in sacred light.

Lord Vishnu sleeps, the world stands still,

Yet chants arise from vale and hill.

Barefoot paths to Pandharpur gleam,

In every step, a whispered dream.

“Vitthala, Vitthala,” voices rise,

Their love ascending to the skies.

Our minds grow still, the world fades thin,

As light awakens deep within.

In every breath, His name we say,

On this divine Ekadashi day.

The body tires, but spirits glow,

As bhakti's river starts to flow.

Through tears and hymns, the soul takes flight,

Bathed in the moon’s soft silver light.

In silence loud, the soul takes flight,

On Shayani Ekadashi’s holy night.

No feast we seek, no riches grand,

Just grace to hold His lotus hand.

Happy 60th Birthday, dearest sister!

Today, as you celebrate six wonderful decades, I just want to say how incredibly blessed I am to have you in my life. You’ve always been my guide, my confidante, and my biggest cheerleader. Your wisdom, grace, and unwavering love have shaped me in more ways than I can count.

Through every season of life, you’ve shown what it means to live with kindness, courage, and a heart full of love. Your laughter lights up every room, and your strength inspires everyone around you. I hope today reflects even a fraction of the joy you've given others over the years.

Here’s to celebrating all that you are and all the beautiful moments still to come. You are cherished beyond words and loved more than you know.

Sixty years — a life so bright,

Woven with love, with truth, with light.

A heart so big, so deep, so kind,

The rarest soul one hopes to find.

You stand for all, both near and far,

A steady flame, our guiding star.

For every voice that goes unheard,

You lift them up with love and word.

So generous, so richly giving,

You shape the world with selfless living.

You give to charity, hands and heart,

Turning compassion into art.

You care for all — with quiet grace,

Bringing warmth to every space.

You never ask, you simply do,

With strength that’s rare, and spirit true.

Your laughter heals, your wisdom shows,

And in your love, a garden grows.

So on this day, we honour you —

For all you are, and all you do.

I went to the temple and prayed for her well being. The priest offered prayers to the Lord and gave me a beautiful pink lotus.

May God give her a long, happy & healthy life.

I surprised her 2 days ago with Gifts I ordered online for her Star birthday and I ordered a "vegan" handbag of her choice for her English Birthday

I want to shower her with so many gifts and give her all the love in this world.

My Guardian Angels (My Parents)

I lost both my parents on the same date 2 year's apart. Appa(23rd June 2015), 10 year's today & my Amma (23rd June 2017), 8 year's today

Life has never been the same again. I'm orphaned 😢 and left to fend for myself without their guidance and support. I miss them each day everyday.

I penned my feelings in poetry

Ten years have flown, Appa, since your celestial flight,

Eight years since Amma joined you, bathed in eternal light.

June twenty-third, a date etched deep within my soul,

Two years apart you left me, leaving such a gaping hole.

Time's relentless passage, blurring months to years,

Leaves me wondering how I function, battling back the tears.

No one, nothing can replace the warmth of your embrace,

Your memory a poignant echo, in time's fleeting space

I long for your embrace, a comforting, healing hand,

Your presence, an absence, across this weary land.

I long for that sure anchor, that haven safe and deep,

Where unconditional love resided, secrets I could keep.

Each day, I reach for the phone, a familiar, empty space,

To share life's joys and sorrows, with your loving embrace.

My happiness feels incomplete, unspoken and unknown,

A joy dimmed by your absence, leaving me all alone.

A heart unmoored, adrift at sea, where shadows softly play,

No anchor strong, no guiding star, to light a lonely way.

A vast and empty ocean, where solace cannot bloom,

Lost in the icy silence, consumed by deepest gloom.

My heart yearns to see you, my guiding stars above,

The beauty of your presence, a beacon of unconditional and endless love.

Your wisdom lives on, a legacy bright,

🙏FAITH🙏

Faith; a quiet trust, a belief held deep,

A strength that rises, even when we weep.

It's more than dogma, more than just a creed,

A trust in something or someone, planting a hopeful seed.

It's faith in God, a prayer upon the breeze,

Or faith in friends, bringing hearts to ease.

It moves the mountains, it works wonders true,

When hope takes root, and dreams break through.

The weight of trust, it binds us to our kin,

To rise above ourselves, and let the good begin.

We strive to honor, the faith that's placed in us,

Pushing limits, breaking through the dust.

Some deem this miracle, I call it faith's embrace,

A powerful force, uplifting every race.

To trust and be trusted, two sides of a heart,

Both must be cherished, never torn apart.

May faith surround you, a blessing light and pure,

And brighter days, forever will endure.

Before you came, a whisper of fear,

A mother's doubt, a shadow drawing near.

My own path winding, still searching for my day.

But in your eyes, a light began to gleam,

A promise whispered, a hopeful, joyful dream.

I'll guide you gently, help you find your stride,

Through doubt and darkness, I will be your guide.

My precious child, as you step out and fly,

My heart takes flight, and follows you so high.

Though I can't shield you, in every place you roam,

My love's embrace, will be your constant home.

I'll watch you soar, with lessons I impart,

A guiding light, forever in your heart.

The strength I've taught you, will carry you through,

Each challenge faced, my love will see you through.

The world may test you, in ways I cannot know,

But wisdom gained, will help your spirit grow.

The triumph of good over evil, a victory to embrace.

Though boredom whispers, trust my love and understand,

There's wisdom to be learned, from this ancient, sacred land.

I ask you now to listen, with hearts both open wide,

A Symphony of pain (Kashmir Attack - 22nd April 2025)

Dear Friend's, I was deeply disturbed by the Kashmir incident that happened recently.

I wrote this poem today. (23rd April, 2025)

A Symphony of pain (Kashmir Attack - 22nd April 2025)

In Kashmir's embrace, a paradise unveiled,

Where beauty and peace, a story was hailed.

Where sunlight danced, now shadows reside,

Innocent dreams, forever denied.

Terror's cold grip, a sudden, harsh blow,

Leaving hearts shattered, in grief's silent flow.

"Om Shanti" we whisper, a plea for peace,

For those who are grieving, may solace find release.

A world torn by violence, a symphony of pain,

From terror's swift strike, to climate's slow drain.

Innocent lives claimed, by forces unseen,

A chilling reminder, of what could have been.

But hope still remains, a flicker in the night,

A call to action, to choose what is right.

Compassion's embrace, a beacon so bright,

Guiding our steps, towards a world where love takes flight.

Let's build a future, where peace holds the sway,

Where every child lives, safe and secure each day.

A world sustainable, where justice reigns true,

A legacy of love, for me and for you.

From Kashmir's tragedy, a lesson profound,

Peace and compassion, are gifts to be found.

Let us honor the lost, with a vow we will keep,

To build a better world, where love runs deep.

The Most beautiful chapters of my life - My daughter's

My dearest daughter's, Before you came, a whisper of fear,

A mother's doubt, a shadow drawing near.

Never let your pain be in vain

Someone asked me that you are in so much pain yet you are always beaming.

I'd rather smile than lament on my pains. Anyways that's my personal battle and no one can help.

On a lighter note this inspired me to write a poem.

My father loved poetry and used to recite poetries by stalwart poets depending on the situation. He knew so many poetries by heart. He used to like poetries with alliteration. And I used to keep making poetries with alliteration to impress him.

NEVER LET YOUR PAIN BE IN VAIN

Pain is a part of my life and I'm a pain warrior

Let it build you up and not be a barrier.

When life throws the challenges use it to fortify

Do not bow down get defeated or Justify.

When times are tough & heated

Stand tall & refuse to stay seated.

When life feels grim, don't fret & frown

Be strong & refuse to back down.

Be happy, Enjoy and have a ball

Life is all about moments big and small.

Resurrect, Every time you fall

Be a proud warrior, Stand tall

You’re beautiful, you’re endless, Now spread your wings and fly,

Do everything you can, think of pain as an Ally.

Brilliant in academics Prithvi got an admission into Dental college, but she chose Physiotherapy, as she felt therapy had a direct and positive impact on the wellness of a patient and she could help rehabilitate them and get them back on their feet.

As a child she was fascinated when she saw marked improvement in the progress of the health of a close relative with Rehabilitation which initiated her interest in the field.

Prithvi has a clinical experience spanning almost 2 decades and has worked in world renowned hospitals as well as community settings. With her excellent clinical skills, exuberance and a friendly approach, she soon became a very sought-after therapist and well respected by her fellow professionals and doctor’s as well.

Prithvi, for me is one of the best therapists in Singapore, she has worked her magic upon me a couple of times and helped me feel better with her skills.

Her approach of looking at the body as a whole rather than focusing on the individual factors of an injury or a problem sets her apart. She not only uses Education, advice, Movement, exercise, manual therapy and other techniques but understands the emotional and psychological needs of the patient and handles them with sensitivity and tact. She’s empathetic yet encouraging and firm.

Physiotherapy can be quite strenuous for the therapist herself and Prithvi has had her share of tough patients going through certain illnesses who have bitten her, pulled at her necklace, kicked her or abused her but that taught her patience she says.

When I asked Prithvi what is it that keeps her driven?

She said, the drive to help someone get stronger by giving them the tools and guidance that they need to achieve their goals is what keeps her going.

She says, that as a physiotherapist, she’s not there to simply provide care and have patients depend upon her, instead she wants them to be independent and functional by themselves.

She humbly says, “I am an instrument that can help and encourage them along the way, the patients are essentially the key to their own successes”.

Massage or Physiotherapy?

For those who think that going for a massage would help rather than going to a Physiotherapist, one must understand that Massage therapy is commonly used for immediate relaxation of pain and muscle spasms, whereas physiotherapy is geared more towards rehabilitating muscle and joint function.

Prithvi says that she loves her profession because there is always a chance to learn new things and helping people. She believes that there is an infinite amount of opportunity and the profession is constantly developing. “You can change a person’s life”.

Physiotherapists help patients in every aspect of their existence, whether it be their health, confidence, or even overcoming obstacles that seemed insurmountable.

As a physiotherapist, you can inspire the people you come in contact with to live a healthier life and to persevere.

Every patient will become stronger in their own way. You can help them mentally, physically or in their everyday environment.

She says, true satisfaction is when the patient gets better and doesn’t need therapy anymore, he feels stronger and ready to take the world, that for her is success.

Prithvi can balance her professional life so well thanks to her supportive husband and son. She says their support has given her the wings to fly solo and start her own clinic “Absolute Physio Care”, A venture she started so she can reach out to as many people as possible.

Prithvi is also a Certified Lymphedema Therapist from Klose Training, Lafeyette, CO, USA and is currently working on developing a cancer rehabilitation programme.

She is a highly skilled professional who enjoys working with clients requiring pre and post-surgical rehabilitation, neurological rehabilitation, Geriatric rehabilitation and lymphedema management.

Priyanka Gupta Sarvaiya has been a quiller for more than a decade and works with paper to create everything from greeting cards, photo frames, pendants, and earrings to designing artworks for reputed agencies. Her recent venture of DIY Quilling Kits designed and packed exclusively by her was a rage.

Introduction to the Art

This quote from Emerson aptly describes Priyanka.

I first noticed her brilliance as an artist, when I saw her beautiful installation of a bounty of handcrafted paper flowers strewn about creating an illusion of “spring with blooms” at Tatini’s Art Show.

Priyanka is the first and only Accredited quilling artist in Singapore to achieve an accreditation from the prestigious Quilling Guild UK for paper quilling art in the year 2018 and recently from the North American Quilling Guild (2020).

Art Calling....

Priyanka holds a Masters degree in Investment and Finance from London as she went on to pursue the path that everyone including herself thought would be right for her. But having an artistic flair since young she did not stop, even on a student’s budget, and discovered quilling purely by chance in one of the art shops in the UK.

Priyanka discovered that one does not need a lot to begin quilling. However, looking at Priyanka’s intricate work I would say it definitely needs loads of patience and creativity.

She says, “She loved the art of quilling so much that she kept going back to it as and when she got a moment whether happy or sad. Quilling made her the happiest and that’s how she realized that she had found her Calling.

Eventually, when she got married and moved to Singapore, she continued with this art and she started writing about her Journey with Quilling through her Blog, “Just Love Crafts”

From there began her journey…..

Her work got noticed and she was invited to conduct her first quilling workshop at NTU with the Staff Recreation department and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for everyone involved and ‘we didn’t wanna stop for hours’.

There was no turning back from there. She ran more workshops for NTU and many others, people started noticing her works and before she realized she was a sought- after Artist.

She thanks her Husband Jatin Sarvaiya who encouraged her to pursue her dreams and do what makes her happy.

Phenomenal Journey from A Master Quiller to a Paper Artist

Priyanka loves using paper in every possible form as it’s such a versatile medium. It's colorful, widely available and we are surrounded by it. Though quilling is and will always be her first love, she went on to discover more paper crafts such as decoupage, scrapbooking, paper cutting, origami, paper mache, etc.

Recycling & Upcycling

Recently Priyanka has been doing a lot of upcycling using magazines, newspapers, packaging, invitation cards, even Toilet paper rolls and she turns them into something beautiful.

She speaks about conservatively using the wealth that nature has endowed us with.

She’s part of Various groups that believes in Freecycle, Recycle & resource sharing Art supplies, and other things.

Animal rights Activist

Priyanka has a compassionate side to her. She cares a lot about the abuse that we humans do to animals to satiate our gastronomic desires and decided to go Vegan.

Recently she along with a few crafters helped crochet, knit, sew a range of items including koala mittens for burned paws and pouches for infant "joey" kangaroos who have lost their mothers in the Australian bushfires

The Evolution of Quilling

When you talk to Priyanka, you can feel the excitement in her voice when she talks passionately about quilling. She says, ‘I love testing my limits in Quilling’. She talks about how it has evolved over the years with newer and newer tools flooding the market though she maintains you only need paper and glue to begin.

The reason she likes to do quilling is she feels because it’s a very simple craft, it’s therapeutic, easy to take up, and has a lot of potentials.

Priyanka has taught thousands of people by means of workshops and public events and believes it brings joy to not only those who learn but to herself too.

Achievements and Dreams come true....

Priyanka’s achievements are parallel to none, her work - 'Kaleidoscopic Singapore' was one of a kind Science meets Art project and the biggest display of quilling in Singapore and possibly in South East Asia. It was her dream project as she always dreamt of doing Singapore Landmarks in Quilling. It was done as a community project with over 200 participants and at least 20,000 quilling flowers had been used.

She was featured on Yahoo TV as a part of their Creators series, Straits Times, Home and Crown magazine, and several other media features.

She Offers paper art/science fusion programs and designs art classes for different market segments.

She has worked on a number of private and Government commissioned projects as well as teaches different forms of crafts at various public and private venues including NLB, Science Centre, Community Centres, Schools, and corporate offices.

She has single-handedly managed and delivered many creative projects for the public and private sector organizations from start to finish with efficiency and accuracy.

Curated the MakerFaire space for EarthFest for the last three occasions as a Director. EarthFest is a leading sustainable festival and the MakerFaire aimed at Inspiring and supporting people and organizations to make more environmentally sustainable choices through art education and engagement.

Participated in several Maker and art events on both national and international level by means of installations, artworks, workshops, and seminars

She has presented her artworks to PM Lee as well as the President of Singapore on public occasions and believes she has been fortunate to get those opportunities as an artist.

Recently Priyanka was featured on Mediacorp Radio Class 95 for a quilling chit chat and a demo to RJ Jean Danker trying her hands on quilling for the first time.

Unique Innovative Liquid Cotton Kolam/Rangoli Art
My fascination with Kolam begins with the days when my mother (Amma) used to draw different shapes at the entrance of our house. Sometimes she used to draw a pattern on paper especially the geometric ones and then recreate it with the Kolam powder.
On festival days she used to soak the rice and a wee bit of Udad dal/Urad dal and then grind it into a fine paste and dip a small rag cloth (meant especially for the purpose of drawing kolam) into the paste and squeeze with her fingers and make patterns deftly on the ground.
As a child I used to be awe struck and always wanted to try.
Never did it come as perfect as Amma’s.
As the days passed, I did get a hang of it but it would never turn out as perfect as Amma’s.
She was an expert in Ma-kolam and Podi Kolam (Powder Rangoli) and she would draw them religiously each day every day.
A kolam is not drawn only with the purpose of decorating the entrance but it serves a greater purpose of feeding the smaller beings like ants and other insects or even birds, thus defining a harmonious co-existence.
In the South of India, it’s believed that drawing a kolam is to invite Goddess Laxmi who symbolizes wealth and prosperity.
The patterns usually range between geometric and mathematical line drawings around a matrix of dots to free form art work and closed shapes.
Folklore has evolved to mandate that the lines must be completed so as to symbolically prevent evil spirits from entering the inside of the shapes, and thus are they prevented from entering the inside of the home. This means that it is also for good luck and protection.

Evolution of Kolam
As times passed, the humble Kolam Evolved and now we have various types and styles of drawing the kolam like flower rangoli, colored rangoli and water rangoli to name a few.

Innovation of the Liquid Cotton Kolam/Rangoli
What is Liquid Cotton Kolam / Rangoli?

This is a special type of Rangoli/Kolam made using the traditional south Indian rice paste but drawn using a strand of cotton. (You can either use a cotton bud or a satay stick with cotton wound around it)

We must pull out some cotton so that it comes out like a brush (This part is tricky)

It isn't as easy as it seems.
A lot of control is needed as you are handling a liquid to draw and the strand can give way or change shape while drawing.

This style is innovated by me and is an Improvisation of the Traditional South Indian Ma-kolam, with a twist to help people whose hands have been affected by Arthritis.

How this innovation came into being?
Every year for Festivals, we make Ma-kolam. Ma-kolam is the traditional south Indian Kolam and without drawing it, the festival seems incomplete as it’s a ritualistic tradition passed down from generations together. It is done to welcome the Gods/goddesses to out home on festival days.

I got diagnosed with Arthritis in my early 40’s and started finding it difficult to sit, squat, bend on the floor to draw Ma-kolam.

Since my hands were also affected it became challenging to draw Ma-kolam.

While I was contemplating on a solution, I got the idea of customizing boards being made especially for the purpose.

Once that got done, I started making Ma-kolam on the boards and placed it wherever I wanted it to be placed.

Now, I could sit comfortably at the dining table and draw my Ma-kolam.

No compromise on the rice paste though as I need to serve the greater cause and stick to the traditions as well.

While doing this, last year I wanted to get more innovative and draw festive based themes and not the traditional patterns only.

I shared it on my social media handles and got rave reviews for it.

People personally messaged me to appreciate me on my Kolam designs.

And thus, came into being the Liquid Cotton Kolam / Rangoli

Now I sit where its comfortable and draw the Rangoli on customized boards.

They say that, "Necessity is the mother of invention".

If you want something, you will always try your best and put all your energies in getting it.

STORING AND MAINTAINING SAREES

Sarees are a woman's pride and joy. It is a drape that instantly makes you look gorgeous and sexy at the same time. 

Since I joined online groups of Saree enthusiasts, the number of sarees I own has increased and it's posing a threat to occupy any empty space it gets. 

Extra Shelves have been made in my cupboard, I got a king size under bed storage. 

The cabinets are starting to complain of the overload. 

Luckily, I got my cabinets custom made to bear more weight, otherwise, the poor shelves would have given way.

Need to keep the treasures away from the prying eyes of my family(Especially my husband,😜😜 else he would say, you have so many, yet, you want to buy one), that was completely in humor. I have an eye to encroach upon a space in his cabinet too. 

Posting something different for a change. Since its the locked-In period, I thought people can put to good use this period by tending to their precious weaves. 

I would like to share with you'll.....

Tips in Storing and Maintaining Sarees:

Storing the sarees

I pack my sarees in saree covers made from Fabric with a front plastic sheet window panel for me to see the sarees inside. Some of them are in see through Plastic covers. 

But the Fabric ones are long lasting compared to the Plastic ones and Eco-friendly too.

Planning to change all into Fabric covers soon. 

I have been buying my saree covers for ages from a street vendor. It's done with the idea to support small time vendors as they depend on this as a source of income. I don't ever bargain with him, although he knows I live abroad, he's honest and charges me what he charges other customers. He doesn't even like to keep the change if I offer him out of goodwill. That's another reason to support him. Honesty and Integrity.

Care of the Sarees after use
Every saree I wear will be air dried after I wear them, then ironed and then placed inside the respective saree bag. Do not place the saree hot from the iron into the bags. Allow them to cool down first. 

If there is a stain, only that part of the stain will be washed using a mild baby shampoo/soap and dried.
All sarees get a much needed Sunbath once every 3 months and the folds are changed and placed back into Saree covers.  (This is important, as the humidity levels in Singapore are quite high and there's a chance to get fungus or silver fish). 
Don't put them in the hot Afternoon sun, but mild morning sun or evening sun.
Again, do not place the saree hot inside the bags, let it cool down.  
Changing of folds are important to avoid dust lines. Always change the crease every now and then to avoid deep creasing and permanent fold that may be difficult to iron out easily.

Sorting

When there is a population explosion of sarees in your house, it gets important to sort them; this, makes it easier to choose the saree based on the event and the crowd that would be attending it. 

Example - My Kanjivarams, south silks would be worn for a party with the South Indians, Navaratri Festival(Haldi kumkum) etc.

My Banarasi sarees would be kept for North Indian functions/festivals.

My Bandhini's & Leheriyas for Teej/other festivals. 

South Cottons and the likes for general events etc. And so on and so forth.....

You can sort it your way....

Now that all are sorted, I label the bags.

Expensive silk sarees are individually wrapped in cotton Fabric(My mom used to use old mulmul dhotis). 

Even old cotton pillowcases can be converted to saree holders.

*Fabric Sort*

I sort the sarees based on Fabrics as well. Silk sarees are stored separately and cottons separately. 

*Color Sort*

I also color sort the sarees into the bags, so when I'm in a rush I know exactly which bag I have to check to choose the saree for the day. 

The dark sarees and pastel sarees are "not" kept together for fear of staining. 

Care
I use cloves for the protection of my sarees. Cloves are good insect repellents and will protect your weaves. Instead of dropping them around, i put the cloves in small organza pouches and put the pouches in my saree bag. One pouch for one saree bag is enough. Every year the cloves get replaced. 

An even better option is to use dry neem leaves as they have anti-pest and anti-fungal properties. Do not use fresh leaves as they could stain the fabric. 
Neem has anti-pesticidal and anti-fungal properties.
Avoid using naphthalene balls or chemicals for protection from insects.
I also place De-humidifiers in my cupboard /cabinet where I keep my silk sarees. Always store in a cool & dehumidified space and away from direct sunlight.
Do not dry clean and roll press at the same time. The fabric will loose it's natural crispness and start to tear. I think if possible avoid the laundry, when it comes to your precious weaves. 
Ironing at home is better than ironing at the laundry as they press very hard causing deep crease lines/folds.

My sarees are my treasure troves. Some of the sarees have sentimental value like my wedding sarees, the sarees gifted to me on special occasions, the sarees passed down by my mother(She passed away in 2017). 

Every time I wear them, i feel like my mother is hugging me. 

With love and care, the sarees will last longer. With these simple steps you can make each worthy saree an heirloom, to be passed on to the next generation. An expensive saree is like an expensive car. So nurture it and enjoy the returns.

She proudly shares with me that she was given the first prize in the inter school rock climbing competition by Ms.Bachendri Pal, the famous Indian mountaineer (the first Indian woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest).

Introduction to the Art……

She chanced upon getting to watch an ongoing Ikebana class at the Community centre while dropping her son for a class, she was so fascinated that she decided to enroll to learn the art.

From there began her journey……

Seema started to learn the Ikebana art of the Sogetsu School of Japan, which believes Ikebana can be created “Anytime, anywhere, by anyone, using any material”.

Since young, she used to love arranging fresh flowers in a vase at home, but Ikebana gave wings to her creative mind, as it allowed her to play with more materials and the freedom to express her innermost feelings and beliefs through materials that she always loved.

Ikebana is about tradition, serenity and the appreciation of nature.

According to one of Japan’s most influential modern ikebana practitioners, the reclusive 69-year-old artist Toshiro Kawase, that is precisely the point: to see that “the whole universe is contained within a single flower” — for one small thing to open our minds to so much more.

In our living environment where more and more artificial and inorganic substances are being used, flowers bring peace of mind to us.

Seema says, “Ikebana to her is like meditation, it’s a meditation on Nature’s unique gifts to mankind, even dried and withered materials grace an arrangement with pride.

The beauty is in the process and it is very personal.

Seema finished her course, but she wanted to pursue it more, so she kept on going to the next level and the next.

She started excelling at class and her teacher appreciated her “Unique style of arranging flowers”

Seema innocently quips, “I didn’t know that I had a hidden talent waiting to be discovered”

Ikebana is a form of art, making an ikebana arrangement is no less than a work of art, it involves meticulous planning, arranging and oodles of creativity.

Arranging flowers has always been considered a way of harmonizing humanity and the natural world.

Recently, she joined a group on Facebook called “Ikebana Passion” which is a group of ikebana lovers from all over the world. She started sharing her creative works online and she received rave reviews from people on the platform encouraging her further.

Learning this ancient art over the past few years has taught me that simplicity and minimalism are the hallmark of classic Ikebana.

Ikebana arrangements can be used to decorate weddings, banquets, events, corporate events, alcoves, entrances, centre table and coffee table arrangements etc.

It can be customized based on themes as well with freedom to the artist’s expression.

Now, a certified teacher of Ikebana from the Sogetsu School of Japan, Seema runs workshops for Ikebana.

Once you check her Facebook page ABOLI CALLIDUS, you will know that Amisha Bhatt is an artist with a difference.
Recently i had the fortune to visit this very talented artist Amisha Bhatt. Not sharing about her would be "sacrilege"
Amisha Bhatt⁩ is very passionate about her art. Her art is very unique. Very few people do clay art in Singapore, but Amisha's clay art is a class apart. It's very different from other's. She weaves magic with clay. The piece of clay comes to life under her deft, artistic fingers.
A visit to her house will make you feel the passion that she has for her craft. You will feel like getting each and every piece to decorate your home.
Although an engineer by profession. She left her job to pursue her passion, And now teaches her craft to people from around the World.

You will be mesmerized watching her transform a piece of clay to perfection.
The petals of the flowers are so thin & fine that it almost looks like a real flower. Ask her how she manages to create so beautifully, she humbly replies, "She uses the best quality clay imported from Japan".
Amisha is a person who would never compromise on the quality of the material used for her art.
Amisha admits, it is no walk in the park starting out as a self-taught craft artist, especially for one who hopes to turn his or her craft into a full-time job.
Amisha also laments on the misconception that being one’s own boss as an independent artist is easy money.
On the contrary, she says one would need to have a genuine love for his or her craft, while being clear of having the right intentions. It's not only about money!!!
Nonetheless, Amisha acknowledges the sense of fulfillment that comes with being able to craft beautiful creations by hand.
She recalls moments where her handmade creations have brought joy to another.
Amisha runs workshops in Singapore. She also runs craft classes and workshops from her home at Bukit Batok, Singapore.

DIFFERENT STROKES - UNSUNG HEROES

For very long I have not been able to contribute much to this blog of mine

Sometimes it's very good to take a break, you return back with a bang with renewed ideas and energy and your creative juices flowing.
It's been a long time I have not been blogging on my Hobbies and crafts blog and rightly so, the demands of everyday life, taking care of my family and career sucked out all the energy and there was no energy left to pursue hobbies and crafts.
But, now, after a few years I feel it's the time for me to start doing the things that I love to do and one of the things I absolutely loved and still love to do is Write.

Back in the late 70’s, 80’s and 90’s we had no social media or mobile phones but our lives were enriched by books. I have to thank my parents who encouraged me to read. They also encouraged me to write and use good vocabulary.

Reading great works inspires good writing and you become a better writer by osmosis.

Fortunately, we had the privilege of reading works by great authors like Shakespeare, Leo Tolstoy, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Ernest Hemingway, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the list of the stalwarts is endless. Even now I read, but on my mobile phone.

I need to also give credit to my friends who always kept telling me that I must write. The writing got contained into social media posts. After seeing some of my posts they would comment; "You write so well".

Just recently, a social media friend stopped me outside a shopping centre and said, “ I saw your post and it’s so beautifully written that it touched a chord”.

Sometimes, we ourselves are unaware of the impact of the things we do, until we are made aware of it by the people around us. I enjoy writing and sometimes end up reading what I wrote a couple of times. When the thoughts flow, I just keep typing vociferously at my keyboard and sometimes on my mobile. Mobile phones have definitely given us the convenience of writing at our own pace and time and wherever we go.

Writing makes me very happy; it helps me to find solace like an oasis in the desert.

Writing is definitely an escape for me.

For as long as I can remember, I used to write.

I used to write when I was sad, I used to write when I was happy and somewhere in between too. It has always helped me feel better.

I think that; the best part of writing is; it not only helps you. It helps others and brings joy to others just as much as it does to you.

And I have thought of using this skill to bring into limelight the people around me who are heroes in their own right. Some people get the name and fame for what they are doing and there are yet others who are not acknowledged or recognized but are committed to give more than they take.

People who have been noticed less or haven’t gotten the laurels they deserve.
I would call them “Unsung Heroes”. These heroes are focused on the big picture and are willing to sacrifice time and effort for the good of others or to pursue a passion that they so deeply believe in.

These fearless hearts and audacious dreamers have maintained their optimism.
They have followed their heart and have been standing against all odds to prove their mettle.

Being a hero is not an easy thing but there are more heroes out there than you might think.

People who are heroes do not always get recognized.

Some of them don’t even think of themselves as heroes.

This is a humble attempt by me to showcase the heroes around me from various walks of life.
A hero is not necessarily someone who wears a cape or has superpowers and saves the world.

Being a hero is about helping others, sharing, caring and endeavoring to make a difference in other people’s lives, creating a ripple effect that all started with you whether using art, craft, talent, acts of kindness; giving back to the society and always hoping to make it a better place to live in.

Extraordinary people exist within even the most seemingly ordinary lives. They are the ones with the knack for living genuinely and who inspire us to attempt the same.

We all have a unique talent and skill set. What the world needs are heroes who have the ability to make extraordinary things happen in the environment we live in.

PAINTING EARTHEN LAMPS (DIYAS)

Continuing with the recycling theme for the Festival of Lights(Deepavali/ Diwali). Here is another very beautiful and very novel idea. Recycling old earthen lamps and making them look unique. There are many beautiful and colorful diyas available in the market but they are expensive. You can buy simple earthen diyas from the market which are still quite cheap and give it your own personal touch, a dash of creativity.

I was inspired to do this because I saw some beautiful earthen diyas painted by my friend who is immensely talented and creative. I decided that I am going to embark on this project as I had decided earlier on that I will go green and recycle as much as possible this Diwali.

People will still buy diyas in the market as it is a matter of convenience and availability. But what I want to suggest here is to reduce the buying and try to recycle old stuff and also let your creativity take wings.

Things to note while re-using and recycling are –

Earthen diyas sometimes can’t be re-used as there may be problems with oil leaking from the bottom or diyas not stored properly breaking or sometimes black burnt marks or oil stains making the diya look very old and not worth using.

- If you have diyas with oil leaking dispose them, they cannot be recycled.

- If they are broken they are not considered auspicious so you can dispose them.

Only the diyas that are working fine and not broken can be re-used

What can be easily re-used and given a new look are –

- Diyas which have burnt marks can be re-used

- Diyas which have oil stains can be re-used.

How to go about it -

Step 1 – Soak the earthen lamps in hot water with some lemon soap. This removes the oil. Wash them nicely. Scrub the black marks with Cif or some such strong cream cleaner with bleach. Rinse them through nicely. Wipe them dry. Sun-dry them for about 2-3 hours.

Step 2 – Now your diyas are ready for some action. Choose a base paint. You can use any acrylic paint. I used a brown-red ultra gloss paint for exteriors. This not only helped me paint my diyas, cover the burnt marks which couldn’t be washed off but also gave it a sleek and shiny look. This paint cost me $1.40 for a can and I have a lot left still.

Step 3 – Choose a place which is airy and lay newspapers or a plastic sheet on the ground or table lest you stain them. Start by painting the inside, let them be until they are dried.

Step 4 – The next day I painted the outside of the diya

Step 5 – Let it dry and on the third day you can start decorating the diyas, You can draw simple geometric shapes, deity impressions, a flower, petal shapes, dots or anything as per how your creativity takes you.

What I did with my Diyas

I used white, silver and gold as the 3 colors for my decoration. I drew kolam (South Indian Rangoli patterns) patterns, simple chakras, Swastik, dots etc as you can see from the picture with Permanent Marker Pens. These dry instantly. You can alternatively use Acrylic paints and a brush to do these as well. Let this dry for another day. Sun-dry or Air dry as per convenience and your diyas are ready to use.

What you can do with them -

- You can stick fabrics, glitter, sequences, beads, crystals, beautiful colored twines or anything as per your wish.

I’m sure people will be impressed with these diyas as they cannot see these anywhere in the market and they are one of a kind and unique and completely handmade by you.

I am sure the family will be proud of your art.

Try making these for this Deepavali. Go green, Recycle and re-use. Save the environment and Save your money too.

RECYCLING OLD TORANS INTO NEW

Very soon we will be ushering the Festival of Lights(Deepavali/ Diwali). This is not only the time for festivities but also the time for spring cleaning, disposing the old stuff, buying new stuff, decorating the altar and the house. Beautiful door hangings also known as Torans or Bandanwaar are hung at the entrance of the home to invite Goddess Lakshmi (The Goddess of Wealth).
Torans are hung outside offices/shops too, to please and attract the Goddess. Every year people throw the old torans and replace them with new ones.

Traditionally Toran was made of Mango leaves and Marigold flowers, these were harmless to the environment, when disposed, but, nowadays we have Torans made of Wooden beads, crystals, metal, plastic etc.
These when disposed cause harm to our environment even affecting our eco-system.
We can’t stop buying this or using this completely as we want to be updated with the times and sometimes it is a matter of convenience and availability.

This Diwali I decided to go green and do something with a difference.
I didn’t buy a Toran and decided to re-use my old Toran which was made of wooden beads, metal and plastic.

Things to note while re-using and recycling are –

Some materials like

- Cheap fabrics etc used in Torans are not re-usable or recyclable as once they are dusty you can’t even wash them as the colors start to run or the fabric becomes shapeless. These Torans are primarily made with the purpose that they cannot be re-used and the people will go back to the shops to buy new ones.

- Plastic balls tend to get dents easily and loose shape and are not easy to re-use.

What can be easily re-used and given a new look are –

- Wooden beads, crystals and Metal.

How to go about it -

Step 1 – De-string the wooden beads, metal rings, metal balls or crystals.

Step 2 – Wash the beads, metal rings, metal balls or crystals neatly with soap and water. Give it a quick wash and rinse as sometimes they run color. Do not use hot water. Preferably use normal tap water.

Step 3 – Dry the wooden beads in the sun till they are dry. The other materials have to be wiped and air dried.

Step 4 – Measure the area where you want to hang the toran. Stick a blue tack to the centre and string them in the same sequence from both sides. String them in the sequence you want.

What I did with my Toran

The toran you see in my picture has a new look, I removed the colored plastic balls which had become shapeless and the mirrors stuck on them had fallen off, so I just disposed them. I also disposed the metal bells attached to it as they were totally rusted and there was no way to refurbish them. I just used the metal rings, the wooden beads and used the little piece of kalash which was gifted by a friend as a centre piece. Unfortunately I forgot to click the picture of how the old toran was looking for people to compare. But I do have a simple and elegant new toran and I attached 2 key rings to the ends to enable easy hanging of the toran.

What you can do with them

- You can always bead them in a different sequence using a strong thread and give it a new look,

- You can buy new beads (with holes on both sides, so you can easily string it) and make a different pattern,

- You can use different colored beads to give it a new color combination or as per your creativity and the ideas that come to you.

- Just remember that string them in an order like 4 beads left and 4 beads right for it to look as good as the ones you buy in the market.
Have a sequence, a pattern. If not it will look messy and disarrayed.

And lo and behold!!!

You have a new toran to adorn your home and altar. If you don’t want to buy torans, you can make these at home.

These Torans not only enhance the main entrance of your home & make it look festive but also give a friendly welcome to those who drop in to wish you for Diwali.

Imagine the compliments that you would receive for displaying something unique that cannot be seen in any home as it is not available in the market and the proud look on your husband’s face that you saved his money.

Try making these for this Deepavali....

THE 3 WISE R's

The three wise R's,

a mantra we hold dear,

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle,

let the message be clear.

With every step we take,

let's strive to shrink our trace,

On this shared Earth,

for generations to embrace.

*Reduce*, the first step, a mindful decree,

To consume less, for a future that's free,

From mountains of waste, that blight our green Earth,

A call to simplicity, to give our planet rebirth.

*Reuse*, a second step, so simple and true,

To give items new life, a purpose anew,

To extend their lifespan, a journey they take,

From trash to treasure, for our planet's sake.

*Recycle*, the final act, a metamorphosis grand,

Transforming waste, to nourish the land.

From discarded materials, new life takes hold,

A closed loop of resource, a story untold.

So let us embrace, these principles so bright,

*Reduce, Reuse, Recycle*, with all our might

For a future sustainable, a cleaner, greener way,

The three wise Rs, leading us day by day.

A mindful heart, a conscious mind,

To lessen our impact, for all humankind.

For the future's sake, let's tread with grace,
