How to back up Outlook Express Email

Step A: Locate the Store folder

Start Outlook Express.
Click Tools, and then click Options.
On the Maintenance tab, click Store Folder.
In the Store Location dialog box, copy the store location. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Put the mouse pointer at one end of the box under the Your personal message store is located in the following folder box.
2. Press and hold the left mouse button, and then drag the mouse pointer across the Your personal message store is located in the following folder box.
3. Press CTRL+C to copy the location.
Click Cancel, and then click Cancel again to close the dialog box.

Step B: Copy the contents of the Store folder

Click Start, click Run, press CTRL+V, and then click OK.
On the Edit menu, click Select All.
On the Edit menu, click Copy, and then close the window.

Step C: Create a backup folder

Right-click any empty area on your desktop, click New, and then click Folder.
Type Mail Backup for the folder name, and then press ENTER.

Step D: Paste the contents of the Store folder into the backup folder

Double-click the Mail Backup folder to open it.
Right-click inside the Mail Backup folder window, and then click Paste.

Step 2: Export the Address Book to a .csv file

Important Make sure that you follow this step if you use multiple identities in Outlook Express.

Microsoft Outlook Express 5.x and Microsoft Outlook Express 6.0 use a Windows Address Book (.wab) file to store Address Book data. The individual data for each identity is stored in a folder by user name within the .wab file that is used.

The only way to separate the Address Book data for different identities is to export the data to a .csv file while you are logged in as a specific identity. If the .wab file becomes dissociated from the user identities, the data can be exported only as one total. In this case, the data cannot be exported folder by folder.

There is another reason to export the .wab file to a .csv file. If the .wab file not exported to a .csv file, but the .wab file is shared with Microsoft Outlook, the addresses are stored in the personal folders (.pst) file in Outlook. When you export the file to a .csv file by using the File menu in Outlook Express, the correct contacts are exported. However, if the Address Book is shared with Outlook, you cannot use the File menu option to export from the Address Book. This option is unavailable.

To export the Address Book to a .csv file, follow these steps:

On the File menu, click Export, and then click Address Book.
Click Text File (Comma Separated Values), and then click Export.
Click Browse.
Select the Mail Backup folder that you created.
In the File Name box, type address book backup, and then click Save.
Click Next.
Click to select the check boxes for the fields that you want to export, and then click Finish.
Click OK, and then click Close.

Step 3: Export the mail account to a file

On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
On the Mail tab, click the mail account that you want to export, and then click Export.
In the Save In box, select the Mail Backup folder, and then click Save.
Repeat these steps for each mail account that you want to export.

Step 4: Export the newsgroup account to a file

How does traffic analysis work? Internet data packets have two parts: a data payload and a header used for routing. The data payload is whatever is being sent, whether that's an email message, a web page, or an audio file. Even if you encrypt the data payload of your communications, traffic analysis still reveals a great deal about what you're doing and, possibly, what you're saying. That's because it focuses on the header, which discloses source, destination, size, timing, and so on.

A basic problem for the privacy minded is that the recipient of your communications can see that you sent it by looking at headers. So can authorized intermediaries like Internet service providers, and sometimes unauthorized intermediaries as well. A very simple form of traffic analysis might involve sitting somewhere between sender and recipient on the network, looking at headers.

But there are also more powerful kinds of traffic analysis. Some attackers spy on multiple parts of the Internet and use sophisticated statistical techniques to track the communications patterns of many different organizations and individuals. Encryption does not help against these attackers, since it only hides the content of Internet traffic, not the headers.

Download and Extraction Software

Download the file above, and save it somewhere, then double click on it. Click on the button labeled "..." (1) and select where you want to save the bundle then click OK (2). At least 80 MB free space must be available in the location you select. If you want to leave the bundle on the computer, saving it to the Desktop is a good choice. If you want to move it to a different computer or limit the traces you leave behind, save it to a USB disk.

Once extraction is complete, open the folder Tor Browser from the location you saved the bundle.

Once Tor is ready, Tor Browser will automatically be opened. Only web pages visited through Tor Browser will be sent via Tor. Other web browsers such as Internet Explorer are not affected.
Once you are finished browsing, close any open Tor Browser windows by clicking on the (6). For privacy reasons, the list of web pages you visited and any cookies will be deleted.

It’s always a good idea to scan someone’s flash USB drive for viruses when you use it on your PC.
how to use Microsoft Security Essentials to scan thumb drives via the Auto Play dialog.

Next download the mseautoplay.zip (link below). Unzip the file to view its contents.

Then move the msescan.vbs script file into the Windows directory.

Next double-click on the mseautoplay.reg file…

Click Yes to the warning dialog window asking if you’re sure you want to add to the registry.

After it’s added you’ll get a confirmation message…click OK.

Now when you pop in a thumb drive, when AutoPlay comes up you will have the options to scan it with MSE first.

MSE starts the scan of the thumb drive…

You can use this to scan any removable media. Here is an example of the ability to scan a DVD with MSE before opening any files.

You can also go into Control Panel and set it as a default option of AutoPlay. Open Control Panel, View by Large icons, and click on AutoPlay.

Notice that now when you go to change the default options for different types of media, Scanning with MSE is now included in the dropdown lists.

Remove Settings
If you want to remove the MSE AutoPlay Handler, Ramesh was kind enough to create an undo registry file. Double-click on undo.reg from the original MSE AutoPlay folder and click yes to the message to remove the setting.

Then you will need to go into the Windows directory and manually delete the msescan.vbs script file.

This is an awesome trick which will allow you to scan your thumb drives and other removable media from the AutoPlay dialog. We tested it out on XP, Vista, and Windows 7 and it works perfectly on each one.
