Kelompok seni kuda renggong Mekar Laharja disela-sela perayaan menyambut HUT Sumedang ke- 434 di alun-alun Sumedang.

Kuda renggong (lit: Renggong horse) is one of the folk art performances originally from Sumedang and founded by Aki Sipan (in 1880s). This attraction present a well-trained horse which has colorful decorative to dance and doing some special movements, such as pretend to figth or lying down while the tamer dance above him. The performance of Kuda Renggong usually held for circumcision ceremony where a circumcision’s child would dressed likes a king or warrior and then go up to horseback. Sebagai bagian dari ujung tombak aparatur negara, peran Linmas begitu penting sebagai 'unit reaksi cepat' dalam menanggapi berbagai kondisi di masyarakat. Rombongan kelompok kesenian Kuda Renggong Mekar Laharja membawa spanduk peringatan hari jadi Sumedang ke- 434. Sekaligus memimpin pawai karnaval mobil hias dengan rute start dari alun-alun sampai bundaran Adipura, Andir pagi tadi (17/04).

Gamelan Sari Oneng Mataram was a present from Mataram kingdom. Story has it that this set of beautiful instrument was won over a candlenut match between the commander of Sumedang and Mataram during the rule of Pangeran Rangga Gempol III (1656 -1706). As you can see from its name, this set of gamelan is obviously a Javanese one. Made in Mataram, the carving shows a strong character of Mataram style, and the tone is pelog.

Gamelan Sari Oneng Parakan Salak, My heart was almost jumped out seeing this gamelan. Never seen such uniquely carved gamelan ever! The ancak ( body/frame) of the gamelan was carved in Thailand using ironwood so it has a chinoiserie look, and painted in blue while the metal instrument was forged in Sumedang around 1825. Some instruments have lion head in each side, while other has dragon. And you have to know this: this is the very gamelan that Claude Debussy seen and heard that inspired him to compose his masterpieces when Sari Oneng took part in Exposition Universelle in Paris, 1889.

I just found a nice post about Gedung Srimanganti and Gamelan of Sumedang Larang (will be posted next post). Sumedang, West Java, is an old town rich in history that is often being forgotten. I visited its museum finally for the first time -Museum Prabu Geusan Ulun- and really in love with the building. A colonial architecture that simple in details, humble but grand at the same time.

Built in 1706, Gedong Sri Manganti - the name of this building, which means the building to wait for important people - was also formerly known as Land Huizen. It has a long history as government formal residence before it's turned into museum in1974.

Acara Helaran Pusaka Karaton Sumedang Larang yang diprakarsai Yayasan Pangeran Sumedang (YPS) digelar pada Kamis (23/02) kemarin. Sebuah kegiatan dimana pusaka-pusaka leluhur yang tersimpan di Museum Prabu Geusan Ulun diarak keliling kota, setelah sebelumnya dilakukan ritual Ngumbah Pusaka. Ada sekitar tujuh pusaka leluhur Sumedang yang diikutsertakan, termasuk simbol kekuasaan Kerajaan Padjajaran pada jaman dahulu yaitu Mahkota Binokasih yang diarak khusus menggunakan Kereta Kencana Naga Paksi.

Helaran Pusaka (lit. heirloom carnival) of Sumedang Larang kingdom is a cultural event where the heirlooms paraded through the city streets after being washed in a ritual called Ngumbah Pusaka (lit. washing heirloom). There are seven heritage objects were paraded during the event, including Mahkota Binokasih, the symbol of the Padjadjaran kingdom. See more pictures below.

Mobil-mobil jadul merk Toyota Corolla milik para anggota ICKS (Ikatan Corolla Klasik Sumedang) sewaktu memeriahkan acara Helaran Pusaka Keraton Sumedang Larang hari Kamis (23/02) kemarin di alun-alun Sumedang.

Those Toyota Corolla classics cars are owned by members of Sumedang Classic Corolla Association, when attending a cultural event, named Helaran Pusaka (lit. Heirloom Carnival), at Sumedang town square last Thursday. See more pictures below.

They're pretty well maintained and work perfectly.
