Postcode Envy panders to two great British obsessions - class and house prices - so I bet that this little app will sell well.

Postcode Envy doesn't do much - just tells you the average house price in a given postcode area, puts your neighbourhood on a scale from Trashy to Minted and then gives you some cheeky little comment like "if you know someone who lives here, please help them escape".

It covers only England and Wales, but does seem to update its information regularly which is good.

Thing is, once you've searched for yourself, your mum and your friends - then there's not much reason to use it again... though the Random Postcode button is quite an interesting way to explore the UK.

Still I think this will sell - did I mention it's about House Prices?

Google has jumped into the location-finding area with a bang - and an app - and it spells trouble for anyone else in that area.

Using your location, Google Places lists venues near you complete with thumbnail pictures from Google Streetview and star ratings plus with reviews pulled from elsewhere on the internet. You can call them, see them on a map, or go to the Google Place page.

It's what apps like AroundMe and Yelp previously did, though they know face stiff competition from this smooth, functional app and the massive Google database powering it.

As you might expect it has a social aspect built in with the HotPot feature which lets you see places your friends have reviewed or rated. HotPot then uses that info to recommend places to you..

You can donate to charity on it, you can find out more about the causes they're helping on it, and you can also play some game where you pick a nose.

Apple has finally banned apps that let drunk drivers know how to avoid being stopped by police.

Apple's guidelines have just been updated following this week's new product announcements, and the App Store Review Guidelines now specifically say that "apps which contain DUI checkpoints that are not published by law enforcement agencies, or encourage and enable drunk driving, will be rejected."

A few months back, US senators issued a call to Apple, Google and RIM to ban these apps, which meant people could endanger others by drinking more than they should, safe in knowing their apps would guide them away from police checkpoints. So now at least Apple has come through on this - Google and RIM, we're still waiting on you.

If a quirky little sharing app called Path rings a bell that's because it launched in November of last year. In fact, search within the depths of your phone, you may have even already signed up to it and then quickly forgotten about it moments later.

Well it seems you weren't alone, some have been using it obsessively but many jumped on the band wagon and haven't touched it since. Until now that is.

So what is it?

Path is an application, but it's also like a social network too, you just can't do everything from the web, a little like Instagram.

It's meant to be a simple way to share key moments of your life, through photos, videos, thoughts and locations. According to the website, you should think of it as a personal journal or "path" through your life. That admittedly all sounds a bit twee, but it's a much nicer way of putting it than a rather clinical timeline (we're looking at you Facebook, obviously).

What makes it different?

Most of the social networks we use at the moment are obsessed with making us share everything with everyone, but Path is different in that it wants you to only share important things with a select few.

Obviously there's a way to share content through to other networks too if you'd like, which isn't the aim of the app, but is a useful addition as it might ease people slowly into the world of Path.

Interestingly, you don't just comment and like either, there are a few emotions, like smile, gasp and frown to play around with. We're not sure whether we love or hate this idea quite yet.

Although you can share other kinds of content, Path is very image focused. You can add a cover photo at the top of your path too, a bit like your Facebook timeline and you can add filters to your photos too, ideal for Instagram lovers.

Why should we care?

Although Path has been around a while, it's recently been re-launched and revamped as Path 2, which changed its focus from just sharing photos to sharing everything. According to Techcrunch, since the relaunch the app has gone from 10K to 300K users in two and a half weeks. Now that's a feat and proves that Path has certainly caught a lot of people's attention.

Who needs Path?

Path isn't going to be a replacement for Facebook, but it could definitely have a lot of potential and it's good to see a social network focused on being social with those that matter, not just anyone and everyone.

The great thing about Path is we don't imagine it'll be the same for every user or even every group of friends, people will undoubtedly start using it in different ways, which will be really interesting to watch develop.

LG have been working on a phone that can have two numbers - a work and a personal one - in the same handset.

The two accounts will be able to work in complete isolation from each other meaning that one can be monitored and secured by the office, while the other can be private.

There won't be the annoyance of having to carry two phones around all day.

LG's partner in creating this new product - VMware - say:
"today's employee-owned mobile devices are often more advanced than corporate offerings. As a result, the agile enterprise is looking to embrace new end user computing models that allow users to work on the devices they love. We are excited to work with LG to develop mobile solutions that address the end user desire for affinity and the enterprise desire for manageability, security and control."

It's a sign from LG that they're moving into the business sector, currently dominated by Blackberry.

For some time the future of Google TV was looking pretty grim. Logitech, whose overprice and underpowered Revue failed miserably, had decided to move on to greener pastures. Sony seemed like the only supporter of Google TV when the 3.1 update came out in October, and it seems like even less people bought the Sony Blu-Ray player and Sony TVs then had bought the Revue. With competitors like Roku making waves everywhere, the ever louder drum of rumors surrounding an Apple TV, and every TV manufacturer out there trying to figure out how Smart TVs will keep them relevant, Google needed to make a big play to keep their service in the game. More hardware, less expensive, and faster distribution are necessary in order for the platform to survive. According to the Google TV Blog, it would appear as though they are trying to do exactly that.

More Hardware

It has been my experience that, while the set top box method of using Google TV is acceptable, the user experience when the entire television is a Google TV is a huge improvement. Google announced partnerships with LG, Samsung, Vizio, and a continued relationship with Sony. All four of these companies are heavy hitters when it comes to manufacturing televisions, and each of them will be presenting devices at CES next week. Additionally, each of these companies have a history of making splashy marketing campaigns about new products and features, which will put the idea of Google TV in front of consumers from four different sales teams. Alongside the new TV manufacturers, Google has partnered with chipset manufacturers Marvell and MediaTek, who plan to showcase devices that offer Google TV. With six different companies offering solutions at CES, Google TV will more than likely be the talk of the town.

Less Expensive
$300 was far too much for the Logitech Revue when it came out, and when the price dropped to $99, they still didn’t exactly fly off the shelves. Price is a critical component of the equation, and many of the manufacturers now partnering with Google are going to try and leverage ARM to help with that. LG, Marvell, and MediaTek all have their own variants of the ARM architecture that they are bringing to the table. While LG will focus on TVs, it’s clear that Marvell plans on releasing many different kinds of devices at different price points. Perhaps even an answer to the recent Roku Streaming Stick. Capturing the low price points without taking away from the performance that has been experienced so far would be a big step.

ARM support for Google TV sounds great, but raises some unanswered concerns about how well Google TV will work. As of right now, there’s no official ARM build for one of the most critical components of Google TV. As many times as the tech community has jumped at the whisper of the hope of Chrome for ARM chipsets in our phones, it would be interesting to see how Chrome for Google TV will work. No official statements from Google on this has been made, and no one from Google was willing to comment on how ARM support for Google TV would play out.

Faster Distribution
Everything that comes from CES is still months away at best, even with hands on. In the mean time, the competitors to Google TV will continue the march forward. Releasing a volley of devices at reasonable prices is a good step, but making sure the devices are available everywhere is equally as important. Google’s partnership with Vizio is impressively strategic, in that it also pulls Google TV’s into WalMart locations across the US. Vizio’s relationship with distribution channels like WalMart and CostCo will allow for a massive distribution channel for Google TV. Meanwhile, each of the other OEM’s will likely be distributing through places like Best Buy, Amazon, and other electronics outlets.
Another huge step Google could take to improve adoption would be to move Google TV to the rest of the world. The international tech community has spent the last year peering in to this really cool candy store, but they can’t have any. There are too many international media rules to make something like that easy, but it would be a huge step in the right direction.

Final Thoughts
Google TV isn’t dead. Far from it, in fact. The fact that Google TV has limped along this far is impressive, and I am sure that Logitech Revue owners throughout the US feel the tragic burn of the early adopter. With an army of new hardware partners, and the possibility for an impressive amount of growth, it’s clear that Google TV isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. With CES just around the corner, we will soon see exactly what the future has in store for this platform.

Nokia are staking out their belief in their own-brand Symbian operating system by installing it again in their latest smartphone release. Symbian - a Nokia-created rival to the Android and iPhone operating systems has come under a lot of criticism over the years for a clunky user interface, slow response times and ugly looks with way too many boxy menus..

But for the X7, out in May, Nokia have tweaked it and given it a new name - Anna (great name obv).

Similar to the X6 in looks with its tapered ends and metallic finish, it also features a super high-end camera - 8 megapixels and a bright double LED flash. It has a OLED screen, shoots high-resolution video and will play back high res video and images.. It looks like a nice piece of machinery.

However reports filtering through confirm that the the changes to Symbian are - at best - superficial and that even the attractive new name doesn't change the fact that this is still a fiddly operating system that requires time and concentration to master.

The Nokia X7 should hit UK shelves in Q2 so expect it any time in the next two months...

Mobile Phones : Review: The Emporia RL1 simple mobile phone

It's stylish in a scaled-back, retro sort of way, the Emporia RL1 mobile phone. You could sort of see it take off in certain hipster-clusters, but the core target market for this simplified mobile phone is those aged 50 or over. This is less a "bells and whistles" phone then, and more a "what it says on the tin" sort of job.

Size-wise, the RL1 is pretty standard, fitting nicely into the palm of your hand. If you're used to a smartphone it will feel light, as it's pretty thin, and the screen is smaller than most new phones as priority is given to the very large keys. The big keys will be a big attraction for the seniors market, which may find the small buttons on regular mobiles hard to see and push. The press info about the RL1 includes a host of scary stats about what happens to our bodies as we get older - I'll abstain from sharing the details and just say there may well come a day when we will all need big buttons. Enjoy your fine motor functions while you have them.

Considering its functions, this phone basically does two things: makes calls and sends texts. Moving through the menu feels similar to the old Nokias we had ten years ago - hit the 'menu' button, use 'up' and 'down' buttons to scroll through. The text comes up quite large, but this can be adjusted down to a regular size (called 'small'), or alternatively you can set it to 'jumbo'.

The text messaging function does not have predictive text, a decision that may seem odd if you are used to that. If so, this will probably be the phone's main drawback. If however you are in the 50+ target group, this may actually not be such an issue - I'm basing this on my experience of having tried to teach a person in this age group to use predictive text, to significant frustration for all involved.

The phone has some extra features too, such as an alarm clock, calculator and a birthday reminder. It's very easy to manoeuvre everything, as the phone will guide you through the options for everything you may want to do. For those needing to use the manual, this is written in the strictest back-to-basics format, making the phone easy to use even for those who have never had a mobile before. For instance, there's a whole page on how to correct a mistake in a text message.

The handset comes with a nice little stand, which can be connected to act as the charger. The phone has a dedicated on-off button on the side - a bit confusing if you are used to holding down the red 'cancel' button to turn the phone on or off, but this is a habit issue. Strictly speaking it's probably simpler to have a separate button for this anyway. Other side-buttons are there for changing the volume, there's a torch too plus a dedicated locking button. Try and press one of the keys while the phone is locked, and the display will show you a picture of the locking button and a big fat arrow pointing to it. So if you're still confused, it's not the phone's fault.

Great spot by the team at 9to5Mac who noted the early arrival of the iPhone 4S on Apple's Japanese website.

The interesting part is that the phone will retail for 10,800 yen, which is apparently 30% cheaper than the iPhone 4. So maybe those rumours about an cheaper iPhone to take on the Android handsets is bang on.

The phone will be available in both black and white.

Update: Apple has now pulled the images from their site.

It seems the iPhone 4S has arrived on Apple’s Japanese website a little bit early. The rough translation tells us the device will be available on October 14th through retail stores starting at 8AM. It appears the price has been cut approximately 30% from the current 13,800 yen down to 10,800 yen.

We also just told you about images of the new device that were discovered on the Apple website showing a largely unchanged design from the iPhone 4 in both black and white models.

Big tech brand LG and Italian fashion label Prada have teamed up yet again to create a slick and beautiful new smart phone called the Prada phone by LG 3.0, catchy huh?

The handset is the third phone to come from the collaboration between the two brands and fuses together Prada's style and LG's technology, but does that mean it's a decent smart phone or just a fashion gimmick?

The phone itself looks good and subtleties in the design scream LG, just take a look at the Chocolate BL40 handset. It's got a huge streamlined 4.3" screen and simple navigation buttons on the front and Prada's distinctive saffiano pattern on the back all in matte black.

When it comes to what's inside the pretty handset, it has 1.0GHz Dual-Core/Dual-Channel architecture for high-speed performance, dual-band wi-fi, an 8MP camera and up to 8GB of user memory. For now it runs on Android's Gingerbread OS, with a future scheduled upgrade to Android's Ice Cream Sandwich.

If you're looking for a good-looking and capable smart phone there are much better options out there, but if you like labels on your gadgets as much as you like them on your clothes then the Prada phone by LG 3.0 is for you. And, although some may call it a gimmicky fashion gadget, you can't deny that it looks damn good.

At the London Design Festival in September 2011, award-winning British designer Lee Broom launched his fifth collection. His dramatic debut upholstery collection is called ‘Salon’ and is inspired by the curvaceous lines of 1930s upholstery

The new collection features soft silhouettes contrasted and accentuated with modern stud detailing for a hint of fashion fetishism. Whilst studding is traditionally used in upholstery to hide elements of the manufacturing process, Broom has chosen to focus on this detail and exaggerate it, creating an edgy modern look, which echoes similar finishing found in luxury fashion accessories and punk rock couture.

‘Salon’ includes an armchair, dining chair, sofa, footstool, drum seat and cushions and is available in a refined palette of beiges, greys, blacks and whites, in a choice of wool, velvet and leather finishes.

Broom says: “I have wanted to create an upholstery collection for a while; my experience in fashion taught me the importance of beautiful tailoring in design and working with British manufacturers allowed me to be entirely hands-on in the design process. The collection has been brought to life through a combination of traditional techniques and contemporary finishes.”

Travertine Dream House was envisioned by Wallflower Architecture + Design and is located in Serangoon, Singapore. The brief of the owner (Inspired by the Italian travertine city landscapes), required the use of greenery, maximization of functional areas and travertine exterior finishes. Here is more from the development team regarding the design solution that was applied: “The house is organized as two parallel blocks connected by a glass enclosed bridge. The separation between the two blocks allows daylight to stream down to basement spaces. Thick travertine walls and large overhangs are placed on the western side to limit heat gain from the harsh afternoon sun. The entry, living spaces and bedrooms are arranged longitudinally to take advantage of natural cross ventilation and daylight. In order to intensify land use without ending up with an imposing structure, the four storied house has one level sunk into the ground and the other three set away from the access road“. With gardens and water bodies spread throughout the house, the interiors are welcoming and inspiring. Have a look!

Every pendrive occupies a USB port. The problem identified was that the user had to remove one of the plugged devices to put in the new device. By means of Multi USB Hub (which is found in USB Hubs) the USB is capable of detecting other USB compatible devices. USB enables the user to use the memory which is located on its one end and to use its other end as a female port for another usb device.

Due to its magnetic casing, the copper strips provide a simple closure devoid of caps which one tends to lose. Due to its specific closure system USB serves as a bookmark and a U clip. It also provides the user with options on how to carry it.

Sadly not much innovation has come about in landline phones, which is why the Wavelength comes as a breath of fresh air. Basically the phone does away with ‘any external receiver or headset to transmit and receive sound.’ What this means is that you talk totally handsfree without the fear of eavesdropping and multitask like taking notes or chop some vegetables!

How it Works

As a substitute ‘Wavelength’ uses a directional (parametric array) speakers and a directional (parabolic) microphone to transmit and receive audio. This allows the user to engage in a completely private conversation through this device without having to hold or wear anything, making tasks like writing a note on a piece of paper or typing on the computer while on a call easier. During a conversation ‘Wavelength’ (with the help of a camera and rangefinder) will track the users face. A two axis pivot allows ‘Wavelength’ to aim the speaker and microphone accordingly. A detachable display and number pad can magnetically dock to the front of the device for charging. In addition the user can choose to activate the speaker and microphone on the detachable remote, if they wish to use the remote as a traditional cordless phone.

The Fujitsu branding is evident and rightly so, the concept is a part of the Fujitsu Design Award that is organized by Designboom.

I like the idea, but I am not so sure about the aspect ratio of the tablet's screen for the following reasons:

-a 21:9 screen would be incredibly long, and very akward to hold, exspecially in portrait. I mean when the xoom tablet came out (it has an aspect ratio of 16:10) most people (myself included) really liked the aspect ratio and felt its was better than the ipad's (4:3). A small few however did feel it was awkwardly long however, if some people (not many, but some none the less) felt that that was to long, imagine taking it and stretching it so it is about 1.5 times longer, once again this tablet would just feel way to akward to use.

-Also, there is no content that supports 21:9, in 2010, a few T.V.s were produced in this ratio, however there is no broadcasted format or storage medium (DVD, Blue-ray, other) that currently holds content at that ratio, meaning playing any movies from today on a screen like that, there WOULD be letterboxing, because the screen is way to long. For example, i have the movie stealth (shown in one of the images above trying to demonstrate how the ratio of this screen is "perfect") in reality, it doesn't play in 21:9, it plays in 16:9, the standard for high definition movies. Trying to fit that movie on a screen like this would cut of signifigant amounts of the top and bottom of the movie.

The work consists of 218 silhouettes - eight profiles of historical Ferrari models made of anodised aluminium. The silhouettes, which can be purchased for a limited time and exclusively at the Ferrari Store in Milan, are consecutively numbered with authentication certificates.

It won the 2x5 contest in 2010 and has been selected in the annual young blood 10.

ARCHITECTURE - Duplex BCN
The open space of the upper level floor is designed to emphasize the panoramic view of the city. It is a multifunctional space with a kitchen made of marine wood, a living area with a continuous green vertical surface inspired to the Mediterranean tradition of hanging plants on the wall that connects interior and exterior. All the furniture is made of marine or white painted wood; the stoneware pavement is used in the interior, exterior and on the work surface of the kitchen to create a unity vision.
The lower level is a large flexible studio changeable thanks to sliding doors that disappear behind the furniture; the pavements is made of parquet that is used also for the furniture of the bathroom characterized by an eleveted shower that is a point of view on the city.

The Tivoli Model One has been praised far and wide for its high-quality sound, small size, and cool, retro styling. We got our hands on a sample unit and came away impressed, just as many others have. Anyone who wants a compact, stylish radio with surprisingly good sound should give the Model One a look.
Design
In many ways, the Model One is the culminating achievement of famed audio engineer Henry Kloss's long career. Designed from the ground up by Kloss, who passed away in 2002, the radio exudes understated class and elegant simplicity. We received the Platinum Series Model One, which features a hand-lacquered, high gloss dark walnut cabinet that is simply gorgeous. According to Tivoli, the genuine wood casing isn't just for looks as it provides "an acoustically inert housing" that maximizes the speaker's sound quality. At just over 8 inches wide, 4.5 inches high, and 5.25 inches deep, the Model One is about the size of a toaster turned on its side-- plenty small to fit on a desk, dresser, or nightstand.

The Model One's single rotary dial handles tuning for both AM and FM stations. It feels sturdy and smooth in the hand. The dial is designed to move between stations at a speed that is a bit slower than the speed at which the user turns the knob-- a 5 to 1 ratio, to be exact. This "ratio" dialing technique makes it far easier to tune stations accurately and quickly. It's a nice touch that sets the unit apart from other desktop radios.

The tuner band selection and volume dials are easy to control. Plus, they're well designed for hands of all sizes. A small LED power indicator, as well as an LED that helps determine signal strength, are positioned between the dials. We liked the light-colored face and dark lettering printed on the Platinum Series model we reviewed; it made for easy operation in dimly-lit rooms. The Model One's single, 3" driver is protected by a handsome metal speaker cover. Tivoli adds that the speaker is enhanced by a "multi-stage frequency contouring circuit that adjusts the speaker's output over half-octave increments." The result, Tivoli claims, is "musically accurate tonal balance and bass response."

The back of the unit features a coaxial antenna jack for the included FM antenna wire. While the Model One also has an internal FM antenna, Tivoli recommends using the supplied external one for tricky tuning in locales with a lot of stations crammed together. There's a handy switch for switching between the internal and external antennae. A standard 3.5mm headphone jack is also provided, as is a 3.5mm auxiliary line in port for plugging in your iPod or other music device. If you want to use the Model One as a component tuner-- not a bad idea given the overall quality and accuracy of the tuning circuitry-- Tivoli has provided a 3.5mm output port. The back panel also sports separate ports for AC and DC power, making the unit a great choice for boating or RV use.

Listening Pleasure
As with the Tivoli iPal portable speaker system, we were initially skeptical about the performance of a small, one-speaker unit that only offers monaural sound. The reality is that most small two-speaker systems don't allow you to place the speakers very far apart anyway, and the Model One's rich, resonant sound more than made up for its lack of true stereo separation. Plus, the Model One is a single, elegant box with no annoying speaker cords.

While the Model One isn't designed to provide earth-shattering sound at high volume, it produces surprising clarity and fullness at normal listening levels. When turned all the way up, the unit's rich sound persists and we suspect that Tivoli engineered the Model One's volume level to max out before any distortion arises. If you don't need a lot of volume, the Model One delivers. As with the iPal, we were left scratching our heads and wondering how such great sound could come from such a little box.

The Model One's tuning accuracy is also impressive; we were able to dial in stations we didn't even know existed. Tivoli says this is due to the unit's discrete-component FM tuner technology, which was originally developed for cellular telephones. Whatever Tivoli has done here, they did it right; closely-spaced stations are a breeze to tune.
