<p>The Border Studies Seminar, <strong>open only to Loyola High School students</strong>, will be a three-week summer immersion program that will provide a comprehensive introductory overview of the complex social, theological, political, and legal discourses surrounding migration, immigration and the U.S./Mexican border region.&nbsp; The three-week summer immersion program will offer a unique opportunity to learn from practitioners in the fields of community engagement and advocacy, immigration law, and the Catholic Church&rsquo;s response to the local Los Angeles immigrant community.&nbsp; In addition to the seminars, students will engage in local community service with organizations/parishes with service and outreach programs for existing immigrant communities.&nbsp; The two-week academic seminar culminates with an immersion experience on the U.S./Mexico Border at the Kino Border Initiative.</p>
<p>The seminars will consist of three modules plus a research project and service component (embedded throughout the three modules).&nbsp; All modules will take place on the campus of Loyola High School beginning on July 24th to August 5th.&nbsp; Courses will run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday with a Friday four-hour community service experience. The immersion experience on the U.S./Mexico Border at the Kino Border Initiative will begin on August 7th to August 11th.</p>

<p>Each of us has the capacity to be purposeful, values-driven, and impactful leaders in our families, schools, and communities.  Hands-on exercises, game play, and simulations coupled with engaging presentations, everyday leader spotlights/profiles and small group exercises/roleplaying activities will provide the foundation and springboard for each student to discover their &ldquo;Leader Within&rdquo; and take the first steps in &ldquo;Designing Their Leadership Life and Path&rdquo; through high school, college, and beyond.  This fast-paced and energizing class will strengthen leadership qualities/characteristics including self-awareness, innovation/creativity, resilience, being men for others, heroism/courage, and stewardship/servant leadership. Additional focus will be placed on learning leadership skill-sets such as design-thinking/problem-solving, meeting management and facilitation, presentation techniques, team-building/team management. <strong>This course is open only to Loyola High School students.</strong> Classes begin on June 20th and meet on Tuesday and Thursday only.</p>

For the most part, we are not taught specific techniques to perform at highly effective levels.&nbsp; This course is designed to give teens the step-by-step methods to enhance their performance in areas of self-esteem, relationship building, academics, extracurricular activities, goal setting, and more. At the conclusion of this course, the student will be fully competent in expressing his/her unique gifts and talents. </span></p>

<p>With a combination of in-class curriculum and home study, this course satisfies the 30-hour state requirement for classroom instruction in driving. Regular attendance is mandatory in order for a student to receive a certificate of completion.&nbsp; This course <strong>does not</strong> include behind-the-wheel instruction, but does use a virtual simulator for behind-the-wheel exercises. <strong>ANY STUDENT WHO MISSES MORE THAN THREE (3) DAYS OF THE CLASS WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THE CLASS.<br /></strong></p>
