Dear Patients and Public,

Summit Vision Center opened its doors in June 2006, but our time is approaching an end. We will soon be closing our doors. No new patient appointments or eye exams will be scheduled. If you have glasses or contacts on order, I will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM until March 31, 2008. Between April 1st and April 30, 2008, I will only be available on Mondays by appointment. In May 2008 I will no longer maintain any office hours.

Eye exams scheduled after April 1st will be canceled. You may contact the North Logan Wal-Mart Vision Center at 435-753-3906 to schedule an eye exam with me at that location. For insurance availability, see my website at visionhealtheye.com.

If you wish to continue receiving frame adjustments or optician services from Amanda, you may find her at Dr. Jaussi’s office, The Optical Shoppe. For directions call 435-750-7883.

For those wondering about the eyewear warranty, I will be severing my ties with lens labs and frame distributors in April 2008, so if a defect is currently known, you must bring it back in before then. Once ties are cut with my suppliers, I will have no way to honor a warranty. I regret this, but I also regret having to lose so much money trying to make a failed business venture work out.

I am sorry for closing the office. Smithfield is a wonderful place to live and work. I hope in the future, when my finances are again in order, to buy a home in Smithfield using my favorite real estate agent, Nan King. I plan to continue providing eyecare services at the North Logan Wal-Mart for the rest of my career.

Thank you all,
David Langford, O.D.

P.S.
There is a possibility of another optometrist taking over my lease space in the current location and keeping the same, famous, 563-2020 phone number. This optometrist could start as soon as July 2008.

There is a certain lens called Proclear that has a tendency to rip under certain people’s contact lens handling habits.
So why would we keep using it? Because it provides excellent comfort, particularly for those who get dryness while wearing contact lenses. The material is also used in a variety of modalities like 2-week replacement (Biomedics XC), and one month sphere, toric, toric extended range, and multi-focal. It is an indispensable lens, and most people handle it just fine; however, I’d like to give some handling tips that I’ve learned from a Coopervision representative:

Don’t pinch from the center of the lens to remove.

Do use re-wetting drops prior to removal.

Do slide the lens temporally to break suction prior to removal.

Do make sure lens cases are full so lens does not adhere to the case.

Do be careful with fingernails to avoid nicks and tears.

Proclear is a high water lens (60%), so it’s very comfortable. We just need to add the above suggestions into our handling of the lens.
And by the way, these tips are good for any contact lens- no matter what brand you wear.

SVC is the only eye doctor office in Cache Valley to offer the new Biofinity contact lens from Coopervision. We received our trial lens kit earlier this week, and of course I had to try them out. For contact lens wearers, you know how you get a mild stinging-dry feeling when you open your eyes up wide or when staring? I don’t get that with this new lens. It is really comfortable.

And it’s priced right at only $50 per box! It’s a one month lens, so you only need four boxes for a year supply for both eyes. This is a great choice for those seeking a breathable, comfortable, moist lens with aspheric optics for excellent vision.

Call today to make your appointment to try on this new lens!

There is a brand new lens on the market. It’s called Biofinity from Coopervision.

Let me tell you why many should be very excited about this lens. This is a very breathable lens. This lens would be great for those who have tried silicone hydrogel (breathable) contact lenses and had to go back to their old ones due to comfort issues. Other lenses on the market that are breathable tend to be thicker (a.k.a. increased modulus) which can sometimes lead to a mechanical interaction with the upper eyelid which causes little bumps to form. Biofinity is high oxygen while maintaining its softness.

Another plus is that it’s also high water content. Typical silocone hydrogel lenses (class of breathable lenses like Focus Night and Day, O2Optix, Acuvue Oasys, PureVision) tend to have less water in their matrix. The more wettable the lens, the generally more comfortable it is. The new Biofinity offers increased “wetness” compared to its counterparts.

Another key distinction is that most silicone (breathable) soft contact lenses incorporate a surface treatment just to be comfortable. I’ve heard about rare reports of this surface coating breaking down before its normal lifespan, causing the lens to become unwearable. Biofinity doesn’t have any special surface coating just to make the lens comfortable to wear. It incorporates Aquaform technology throughout the entire lens matrix. I’ll quote from the Coopervision website about what this means for you:

Excellent comfort through naturally wettable Aquaform™

Key Features

High oxygen performance

Soft and moist lens material

Round lens edge

Aspheric front surface [excellent optics]

Benefits

Better all day comfort

Whiter, healthier eyes

Sharper vision

For now this monthly replacement lens is only FDA approved for daily wear (taking out every night); however, we expect it to become cleared for extended wear later. So far it’s only available for mild-to-moderately high nearsighted individuals. During your contact lens evaluation at Summit Vision Center, we can determine if you would be a likely candidate for the new Biofinity contact lens <del datetime="2007-10-09T21:54:58+00:00">when it becomes generally available soon</del>. <ins datetime="2007-10-09T21:56:40+00:00">Summit Vision Center now has the Biofinity contact lens!</ins>

AMO’s Complete MoisturePlus (no rub) soft contact lens multipurpose solution (MPS) was taken off the market a few months back because it wasn’t killing the Acanthamoeba germ, at least not while using the no-rub technique.

Now they have a new product:

Here’s a discription of the product that I got in an e-mail sent by AMO to eye doctors:

AMO re-entered the multipurpose solution market with the launch of COMPLETE® MPS EASY RUB™ FORMULA and a professional education program called the PATIENT COMPLIANCE SYSTEM. The program emphasizes the importance of a clean environment for cleaning and caring for the lenses, proper hygiene (hand washing), the importance of a rub/rinse care regimen, proper application and removal of contact lenses, proper replacement of contact lenses and case, disinfection regimens, case replacement, and documentation and follow-up. The PATIENT COMPLIANCE SYSTEM is easy to follow and use and covers all the key elements of good contact lens care.

I would guess that they kept about the same formula (maybe even dropping the MoisturePlus ingredient?), but notice that you have to rub with this MPS. Rubbing to mechanically clean your contact lens is an excellent thing to do no matter what type of MPS you use.

I wish all MPS manufacters would stop advertising “No Rub” and just direct everyone to use the rubbing technique. It wastes less solution anyway, so it’s more economical and apparently more healthy for your eyes to use the rub directions.

Afterwards we’re all getting together at the old Ucon church and eating funeral potatoes, ham, and stuff.

I’m going to be a pall bearer, and we’re all supposed to wear brown bomber jackets to celebrate his being a pilot in World War II and with USU. If anyone has a jacket of this type that you could lend me, please contact me before Monday.

What does the above grid mean? In short, it means use a peroxide-based care system if you want to be sure to achieve maximum possible comfort with your soft contact lenses. If you prefer a multi-purpose solution, it means we need to tailer which kind you use according to the brand of contact lens you wear.

I’ve heard many people tell me how they cannot wear contact lenses because their eyes are too uncomfortable. They usually report problems with dryness and itching. Some brands of contacts help prevent dryness, but when used with the wrong care system (solution for cleaning, storing, and disinfecting your contacts), then you could still get dryness. The gold standard is hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-based systems like Clear Care by Ciba. H2O2 is reduced down to saline water after sitting 6 hours in its special container which contains a catalyst. Because there are no extra chemicals to irritate your eyes, the contacts feel great.

Multi-purpose solutions (MPS) contain saline water, but they also contain small amounts of all sorts of chemicals: preservatives, disinfectants, surfactants (soap), buffers, and conditioners. If your eyes are sensitive to any one of those ingredients, you could experience irritation. The best MPS across all contact lens brands appears to be Opti-Free Express or Replentish according to the work done by the eye doctors at www.staininggrid.com who are studying the biocompatibilty between your eyes, your contacts, and your care system.

Let’s compare the interaction of a popular brand of contact lens, O2Optix, with Opti-Free Replentish and Equate MPS.

All the little, green dots on the right side represent stippling, like on a golf ball, wear the cornea surface has been compromised. This will make your eye more irritated and possibly more prone to infection. (This picture courtesy of staininggrid.com. See more pictures at their photo gallery.)

So if you just buy whatever contact lens solution that is cheapest, then consider how your eyes feel and and reevaluate whether that is a good option. Am I saying that you should never buy Equate MPS? Not exactly. There are a couple lenses in the study that don’t seem to interact with your eyes and a generic MPS to cause problems.

At your yearly/bi-yearly eye exam, I can explain the best care system product and the best contacts for your eyes.
