Save the date- Saturday, October 22, 2011 will be the fifth annual Fall Fiesta at Vol State in Gallatin from 10am-4pm.We’ll have plenty of food, music and fun while celebrating Hispanic culture.

As usual, non-profits are welcome to have tables for free. Businesses need to be sponsors to have a table. That is a $100 tax-free donation to the Sumner Hispanic Alliance scholarship fund. 100 percent of all funds raised go to fund scholarships for Hispanic students at Vol State. Hispanic Fiesta sponsorship opportunities for area businesses

The Fall Fiesta at Vol State is a free celebration of Hispanic culture. Food, music and fun will be among the highlights. There will be a food cook-off contest featuring homemade dishes from many different Hispanic countries. A soccer contest will run all day and feature trophies for the winners. There will be a live band, a folk dance exhibition and many other cultural events. We’ll also have medical check-ups and information from area community groups.

Non-profits are welcome to have a free table at the event, as long as it fits the theme of the event and addresses needs in the Hispanic community. At this time we are not having any businesses actually selling items at the Fiesta. We have decided to keep it an entirely free event.

Businesses who want to reach the Hispanic population can have display tables and give out free samples as a Fiesta Sponsor. There is a required donation of $100 to the Hispanic Alliance Scholarship Fund at Vol State. It will go for books or tuition for a Vol State student each year. All donations are tax deductible and will be made directly to the College Foundation.

Any sponsors who make donations are entitled to have their company logo displayed as a sponsor on Fiesta fliers. Thousands of these fliers are distributed throughout north Davidson, Sumner, Robertson and Wilson Counties. Sponsors will be added to the poster runs as new ones are printed.

The Fall Fiesta at Vol State is a non-profit community event paid for by Volunteer State Community College. It is run in a partnership with the Sumner County Hispanic Alliance. Everyone is invited to participate and attend.

Este evento anual se realiza en español y en inglés. Provee información, para personas de todas las edades, sobre nuestros programas con grados, clases de ESOL (Inglés como Segunda Lengua), admisiones y ayuda financiera. Consejeros de Vol State que hablan español trabajan personalmente con estudiantes potenciales y sus padres. On Tuesday, February 8 from 5:30pm to 8pm we will be holding Hispanic Family Night at Volunteer State Community College in the Thigpen Libray. This annual event is held in Spanish and English. It provides people of all ages with information about Vol State degree programs, ESOL classes, financial aid and admissions. Spanish speaking Vol State advisors work one-on-one with potential students and parents. We call it Hispanic Family Night because we encourage the entire family to come and visit. We’ll have refreshments and activities for the kids.

La cuarta Fiesta de Otoño en Vol State es la celebración de la cultura Hispana y sus logros. La “Fiesta de Otoño” se enlaza con el mes de la Herencia Hispana y les ofrece a todos la oportunidad de venir a disfrutar música en vivo, comida gratuita, grupos de danza y un torneo de fútbol.
“Este año estamos expandiendo las actividades para los niños incluyendo manualidades artísticas, artesanías y cuentos”, dijo Eric Melcher, Coordinador de Comunicaciones, para Vol State. “Cada año tratamos de asegurarnos de que la Fiesta tenga mucho que ofrecer para toda la familia”.

Durante la competencia de comida latinoamericana, los participantes mostrarán su receta favorita ofreciendo platillos de diferentes países. La competencia está patrocinada por la Alianza Hispana del Condado de Sumner quien también ayuda a organizar la Fiesta. Después de la actividad culinaria el público podrá probar los platillos. Las danzas regionales serán bailadas por el Hispano America Dance Troupe. Habrá torneos de fútbol durante todo el día. Habrá competencias de eliminación de “medio-campo”, “medio-equipo” con trofeos para los equipos finalistas. Tantos jugadores como equipos pueden registrarse desde las 9 a.m.

“Recomendamos a las personas que traigan sillas plegables para exteriores y cobijas para que se queden todo el día” dijo Melcher. “Esto no es solo para los Hispanos, esperamos que todo el mundo venga y se divierta”.

La Fiesta de Otoño es gratuita. Se realizará con lluvia o sol, usaremos el gimnasio de Vol State en caso de mal tiempo.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage at Vol State Fall Fiesta

The fourth annual Fall Fiesta at Vol State is a celebration of Hispanic culture and achievement. Fiesta de otoño, as it is known in Spanish, ties in with Hispanic Heritage Month and will offer everyone the opportunity to come enjoy live music, free food, dance groups and a soccer tournament.

“We’re expanding the children’s activities this year to include arts and crafts and storytelling,” said Eric Melcher, Communications Coordinator for Vol State. “Each year we make sure the Fiesta has plenty to offer the entire family.

People will show off their favorite family recipes during a Latin American food cook-off contest, featuring dishes from many different countries. That contest is sponsored by the Sumner Hispanic Alliance which is also helping to organize the Fiesta itself. After the judging the public will be able to taste the entries. Cultural dances will be performed by the Hispano America Dance Troupe. There will be a soccer tournament running all day long. It will be a half-field, half-team elimination competition with trophies for the top teams. Players and teams can sign up starting at 9 a.m.

“We’re encouraging people to bring a blanket or lawn chairs, and spend the day,” Melcher said. “It’s not just for Hispanics, we hope everyone will come out and have fun.”

The Fall Fiesta is free. It will be held rain or shine, with the college Gym being used in case of bad weather. We'll also spend time remembering our good friend Pedro Arias, who passed away suddenly two weeks ago. His funeral the other day was a touching reminder of how much he meant to so many people in the community.

The Fall Fiesta at Vol State will be held on Saturday, October 9 2010 from 10am-4pm. The annual event brings in hundreds of people and features food, music and fun. It is held on the Volunteer State Community College campus in Gallatin. The Sumner Hispanic Alliance partners with the College for the event. Soccer in the Park Day-May 16

The Gallatin Soccer League holds regular soccer matches on Sundays at Rogers Field in Gallatin. On Sunday, May 16 we will use this opportunity to provide information. Nonprofit and community organizations are invited to join the Sumner Hispanic Alliance in this day to reach out to the Hispanic community. You will need to provide everything you need: tables, chairs etc. Out of respect to the organizers of the soccer league we ask that you not give out any food or drink. They sell it on site and it is how they help to pay for the soccer matches. We also stress that this invitation is only open to nonprofit entities.

La Noche Familiar Hispana en Vol State se enfoca en la educación

La educación te puede ayudar a obtener un mejor trabajo y crecer en tu profesión. Volunteer State Community College tendrá un evento especialmente diseñado para Familias Hispanas. La noche de Educación de la Familia Hispana te ayudará a responder las preguntas acerca de todo lo referente a programas con grados y clases de inglés. La reunión tendrá lugar el martes 9 de febrero de 5:30 p.m. a 8 p.m. en el campus de Vol State en Gallatin.

“Vendrá gente de todas las edades: jóvenes de high school (colegio o secundaria) que se están preparando para asistir al college, adultos que quieren regresar a la escuela o que quieren aumentar sus habilidades con el inglés,” dijo Eric Melcher, Coordinador de Comunicación de Vol State. “Tendremos muchas oficinas de Vol State disponibles, incluyendo admisiones y consejería. También tendremos personas bilingües disponibles para consejería y traducir al español.

Las clases de ESOL son un tema popular durante La Noche Familiar Hispana. ESOL por sus siglas en inglés significa “Inglés para Hablantes de otras Lenguas”. Las clases porporcionan a los hablantes español u otros idiomas un paso grande en el aprendizaje del inglés. Además ayudan a desarrollar habilidades en conversación, escritura y lectura.

Se servirá un refrigerio y habrá películas y entretenimiento para los niños. De este modo los padres podrán tener tiempo de hacer preguntas. Hispanic Family Night at Vol State focuses on education

Education can help you get a better job and grow a career. Volunteer State Community College is holding an evening especially designed for Hispanic families. The Hispanic Family Education Night will help answer questions about everything from college degree programs to English classes. It will be held on Tuesday, February 9 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on the Vol State campus in Gallatin.

“We have all sorts of people attend: high school students who are getting ready for college, and adults who want to go back to school or improve their English skills,” said Eric Melcher, Communications Coordinator at Vol State. “We’ll have several college offices on hand, including Admissions and Advising. We’ll also have bilingual staff available for advising and translating in Spanish.”

ESOL classes are a popular subject at Hispanic Family Night. ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages. The classes provide a stepping stone for Spanish speaking people to build their skills in conversation, writing and reading.

Refreshments will be served and there will be movies and fun to keep the kids entertained, so parents can have time to ask questions. Everyone is invited to attend. 800 Attend Fall Fiesta at Vol State

More than 800 people attended the Fall Fiesta at Vol State on Saturday. The celebration of Hispanic culture featured food, music and fun for the whole family. A food contest, cultural quiz contest and Hispanic themed storytelling for kids were just a few of the highlights.

Many came for the popular soccer tournament. 14 men’s teams and 4 women’s teams competed. The tournament was organized by Jesus Gomez and the Gallatin Soccer League. Three men’s teams and the top women’s teams received trophies.

Kazique’s Band provided the music for the event. This is the third year for the Fall Fiesta, which is held on the Volunteer State Community College campus in Gallatin.

La Fiesta de Otoño Celebra la Cultura Hispana

La gastronomía de América Latina y del Caribe estará disponible para degustar en La Fiesta de Otoño del Volstate, esto como parte de un gran concurso de cocina. Es el tercer año que en Gallatin se celebra la fiesta a la cultura hispana.

“Tendremos una demostración de talentos y muchos concursos nuevos para los niños,” expresó Eric Melcher, Coordinador de Comunicaciones. “Los juegos inflables siempre son los favoritos”. “Nosotros tratamos de hacer este evento divertido para toda la familia.”

Una exhibición de bailes típicos de diferentes países serán presentados por la Compañía de Danza de Hispano Américana.

Las habilidades deportivas serán mostradas en el torneo de fútbol; equipos de cinco personas están invitados para jugar en el medio campo de competencia, ellos tendrán que registrarse durante el comienzo de la fiesta a las 10 a.m.

“La música en vivo siempre es una gran parte de la fiesta”; La banda Son Latino regresará este año,” dijo Melcher. “Ellos tienen bastante seguimiento en Nashville”.

Como complemento al concurso de cocina que es a las 11 a.m., también habrá comidas y bebidas gratis alrededor del mediodía.

La Fiesta de Otoño en Volstate tendrá lugar el sábado 10 de octubre de 10 a.m a 4 p.m. en el campus del Volunteer State Community College en 1480 Nashville Pike en Gallatin. Fall Fiesta Celebrates Hispanic Culture October 10

The cuisine of Latin America and the Caribbean will be available for tasting at the Fall Fiesta at Vol State. It’s part of an expanded food cook-off contest. This is the third year for the Fiesta in Gallatin, which celebrates Hispanic culture.

“We’ll have a talent show and several new contests for the kids,” said Eric Melcher, Coordinator of Communications. “The inflatable jumping games are always a favorite. We try and make this a fun event for the entire family.”

An exhibition of cultural dances from many different countries will be performed by the Hispano America dance troupe. Sports skills will be on display at the soccer tournament. Teams of five people are welcome to play in the half-field competition, but they should sign up at the beginning of the Fiesta at 10 a.m.

“Live music is always a big part of the Fiesta. The Son Latino band is returning this year,” Melcher said. “They have quite the following in Nashville.”

In addition to the food cook-off contest at 11 a.m. there will be a free lunch and drinks starting at noon.

Estamos planeando la Fiesta de Otoño del 2009 en Vol State. Esta celebración de la cultura hispana tomará lugar el sábado 10 de octubre del 2009 desde las 10 de la mañana a las 4 de la tarde en las instalaciones de Volunteer State Community College en Gallatin. Tendremos comida, música y diversión y como siempre ¡es gratis y abierto a todo el público! El año pasado alrededor de 600 personas asistieron a este evento.

La Alianza Hispana del condado de Sumner está organizando el concurso de comidas este año y estamos invitando a quienes quieran participar. Es una forma divertida de compartir comidas favoritas de los muchos países que hacen a la cultura hispana. Todos pueden participar, incluyendo personas individuales, familias y restaurantes. Para los restaurantes este año es una gran oportunidad de mostrar sus comidas a cientos de personas. Aquí están los detalles:

-Trae un platillo hispano suficiente para 50 o más pequeñas porciones. Nosotros proporcionaremos platos y cubiertos.

-Puedes traer varios platillos si lo deseas y cada uno será juzgado por separado.

-La comida será servida a las 11 de la mañana, así que asegúrense de que esté lista. El college no tiene cocina, así que necesitan preparar la comida y traerla hecha. Por favor mantenga las medidas necesarias de higiene. Si su comida necesita estar refrigerada o caliente tenga los medios necesarios para hacerlo.

-El concurso será de 11 de la mañana a las 12 del mediodía. Todos los que participan en la fiesta pueden probar los diferentes platillos. Los jueces determinarán los ganadores.

-Todo en el concurso es gratis y no hay ningún costo para participar. No habrá pago por la comida, tú proporcionas la comida gratis para el público.

Join us for the October Fiesta Food Contest!

We're already planning the 2009 Fall Fiesta at Vol State. This celebration of Hispanic culture will take place on Saturday, October 10, 2009 from 10am to 4pm on the Volunteer State Community College campus in Gallatin. We'll have food, music and fun and as always it is free and open to the public. Last year we had about 600 people attend.
The Sumner Hispanic Alliance is running the food contest this year and we're inviting everyone to participate. It's a fun way to share favorite foods from the many countries that make up Hispanic culture. Anyone can enter, including individuals, families and restaurants. For restaurants this is a great opportunity to showcase your food in front of hundreds of people. Here are the details:

-Make a Hispanic themed dish that could feed at least 50 people with small portions. We provide the plates, forks, spoons, cups etc.

-You can bring several dishes if you would like, and each one will be judged separately.

-Food will be served at 11am, so make sure it's hot and ready to go. The college will not have kitchen facilities, so you will need to prepare it before hand. Please observe food safety and keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot.

-The contest will run from 11am to Noon. Everyone who attends the Fiesta can sample the various dishes in small portion sizes. Judges will determine the winners.

-Prizes will be given for best food items and also for the best cultural display. If you are from Costa Rica, combine a Costa Rican food item with some interesting things to display of Costa Rican culture. If you are Mexican consider showcasing interesting things about the Mexican state that you come from. Be sure to bring a sign describing the dish, what country it is from and your name or the name of your restaurant.

-If you have a restaurant it would be fine for you to hand out menus or business cards.

-Everything at the food contest is free and there is no fee to enter. There is no payment for the food items, you provide it free to the public.

-We'll announce prizes later.

E-mail us and we can put you on the list to find out about the meetings. We're doing this in order to get into the community more. We'll have some fun community events coming up soon so stay tuned. We had a nice turnout for Hispanic Famiily Night in Gallatin. About 75 people came to get information about college, college level ESOL classes, basic English classes and GED prep classes. We're doing it again, this time in Springfield, on March 3 from 5:30pm to 8pm. It will be held at the Tennessee Career Center, 229 10th Avenue East. Alliance members are encouraged to come out and help us translate.

The Alliance meetings lately have been held in Spanish and English, with the emphasis on the Spanish. Everyone is welcome to come to a meeting and translation will be provided, no matter what language you speak. All meetings are at 5:30pm in the Thigpen Library on the Vol State campus at 1480 Nashville Pike in Gallatin. Here are the upcoming meeting dates:

Noche Familiar Hispana en Vol State Se Concentra en la Educación

La educación es importante para tu familia y tu futuro. De todos modos, el proceso de registración puede ser complicado. Volunteer State Community College tiene un evento que puede ayudarte. La Noche Familiar Hispana tendrá información desde clases básicas de inglés a cursos de nivel universitario y programas de certificados. El evento será el 10 de febrero y es gratis y abierto a todos los que quieran participar.
“La Noche Familiar Hispana es para la familia entera en realidad,” dijo Eric Melcher, coordinador de comunicaciones de Vol State. “Muchos adultos están interesados en clases de inglés o regresar a la escuela, y los adolescentes están listos para ingresar a la universidad. Tendremos consejeros que podrán hablar con la gente en español y en inglés para responder mejor a tus preguntas.”

“No importa qué nivel de inglés las personas tengan, este evento puede ayudar,” dijo Terry Bubb, director del centro de consejeros. “El departamento de educación para adultos del condado de Sumner tendrá información con respecto a las clases de inglés básicas y sus programas de GED. Los consejeros de Vol State pueden hablar acerca de la ventaja de las clases avanzadas de inglés y cómo prepararse para la universidad.”

El evento será el martes 10 de febrero en la Biblioteca Thigpen del campus de Vol State ubicado en 1480 Nashville Pike, Gallatin. El college está ubicado 30 minutos al norte de Nashville. Toma I-65 Norte hacia Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway (386). Continúa por aproximadamente 16 millas en Vietnam Veterans hasta la salida 14. Education is the focus for Vol State Hispanic Family Night

Education is important for your family and your future. However, going through the college application process can be complicated. Volunteer State Community College has an event that can help. Hispanic Family Night will have information about everything from basic English classes, to college level courses and degree programs. It will be held on February 10. It is free and open to everyone.

“Hispanic Family Night really is for the whole family,” said Eric Melcher, Communications Coordinator at Vol State. “Many adults are interested in English classes or returning to school, and teenagers are just getting ready for college. We’ll have counselors who can speak to people in Spanish and English, to better answer any questions they might have.”

“No matter what skill level people have in English this event can help,” said Terry Bubb, the Director of the Advising Center. “Sumner County Adult Education will have information about basic English classes and their GED program. Vol State folks can talk about our advanced level English classes and how to prepare for college.”

Volunteer State has many support services available for students, including the award-winning NewSkills Center, which provides help with math, reading and writing. The Language Center has resources for people who speak foreign languages, including Rosetta Stone software. The TRIO Student Support Services program has a wide array of help for first-generation college students, those with low family incomes, or those with certain disabilities.

Refreshments will be served. There will also be movies and fun to keep the kids entertained, so parents can have time to ask questions. Everyone is invited to attend. The Hispanic Family Education Night will run from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and people can stop by whenever it’s convenient.
