I'm enjoying that quite a bit on my new media PC, both recording TV shows and streaming from Hulu. However, I cannot help bat question whether the award has come too soon.<br /><br />While I agree our president of the past nine months has done much to promote peace, he's not the man I want to see recognized for those efforts. Rather, I want to see that award go to the president who will build on those efforts for the next few years to come. He, I believe, will prove even more deserving of this honor, but his major accomplishments are still some years away.<br /><br />In the meantime, I would have preferred to see the award go to someone move in need of its recognition and resources. While President Obama needs our support to continue his work, he already has recognition and resources in abundance.<br /><br />That said, the spirit in which he has accepted the award shows that our president understands the work yet to be clone. He was busted when Dave refused to play ball and went to the authorities to set a trap. No surprise there. Extortion works well against those with secrets, but Dave isn't secretive; he's private.<br /><br />Confront a person with their secrets. They'll try to hide them. Violate a person's privacy, they'll attack. And that's what Dave did. He hit back at his would-be extortionist and laid out his side to his audience, wiping out the presumed leverage. The pathetic part is it's actually known that Dave has had relationships with staffers. His wife who he married in March, long after this affair ended, used to work for him. On one hand, I think we need reform to go further. On the other, I recognize the path forward must be taken step-by-step.<br /><br />I agree with setting up an insurance marketplace to bring insurance providers and customers together. I agree with establishing a non-profit insurance provider as an option. I foresee some controversy over mandating that everyone obtain basic coverage, but the flip side is that it means universal coverage.<br /><br />I think the President presented a strong outline for reform, giving enough leeway to all sides to contribute and take credit for the bill's success. It was wonderfully done and well-acted. I'd call it daring and brilliant... if it wasn't directed by Quentin Tarantino. For him, I'd call it lazy.<br /><br />The dialogue is strong but wit is scarce. The plot is multi-layered but only one layer drives the ultimate outcome. The story is rich and complex but it boils down to a revenge story, just as Kill Bill was. The last scene is fairly predictable and mimics yet another Tarantino story. Strangely, while he leapt into new territory with this film, I felt the underlying story took too much from his past works.<br /><br />That said, it is only my familiarity with those past works that dampens my enthusiasm for Basterds.
