You see, Amanda was a girl I met in an AOL chatroom when the internet was just barely becoming a commonplace thing in people's homes. I even think they were AOL hours provided by those free CDs they'd send to everyone in the mail. Anyways, I was probably somewhere around 13 years old, perusing what I thought was the extent of the entire internet--a couple dozen chatrooms categorized by interest. Poking around in the "Music" chatroom, I was looking for someone--anyone--who had recently also had their minds blown by the brand new Jimmy Eat World album, Static Prevails. My young ears had yet to even hear the word "emo" and I'd yet to discover any other bands who sounded anything like what Jimmy Eat World had just concocted. So I was wandering blind, basically. But I eventually ran into Amanda, from Michigan.

After we'd established a shared love for Static Prevails I discovered she lived in or around Detroit. She was a couple years older than me so she told me about some of the underground bands popping up in Michigan, gave me some more band names to look up (which is how I discovered Mineral, The Get Up Kids, Sunny Day Real Estate and Jawbreaker), until eventually she wanted to just send me a mix tape. A fucking mix tape! Yes, children, we really did that as kids. She slipped a cassette tape into a padded envelope and shipped it to Arizona.

So on this mix tape were some real gems: Karate, The Descendants, Smoking Popes, The Great Detroit Riverboat Race, Texas Is the Reason, Christie Front Drive... But there was this one song--the first song on Side B--that I couldn't shake from my mind and I had no idea why. The song was not pleasant to listen to. It didn't make me shake my booty. I could hardly understand any of the words. Yet, somehow, I wouldn't stop running it over and over in my head.

It was "220 Years" by Hot Water Music.

Relative to Jimmy Eat World's record, it was far less polished and much harder to listen to. I'd never heard such a sloppy, reckless, and utterly passion-filled recording. They seemed to sacrifice quite a bit of their musicality to pure emotional expression--but without the immaturity of the punk bands I had started to get into, like Guttermouth, Rancid or Against All Authority. HWM just did it with an intangible sophistication. They harbored a much more introspective rage--one that was just as personal to its fans as it was defiant to its oppressors. Rather than sticking it to the man, their lyrics encouraged decidedly more positive angles of individuality such as self-discovery, exploration, community, art, hatred, love, etc. For instance, another song from Fuel for the Hate Game, "Turnstile", gives us these great lines that sound punk as hell at first, but that eventually reveal a deeper side:

Raise your voice in swells, find your meanings, then
Use the signs inside to relive and relive again.
No point in holding back with what you're holding,
No matter it be shit or it be golden,
Foundations shift, they're still shifting,
We set up, we set up our falls.

And instead of politically-charged songs of rebellion, HWM took the punk anthem formula and, instead of lines about riots and authority figures, they took it inward and repeated powerful strains like "Live your heart and never follow"and "Caution, the solid ground that you're on will slide from under you."

Needlessly to say, I quickly jumped on board the Hot Water train. It was a lonely train for a long time because I didn't learn how to actually connect with other HWM fans until my late teens, and by that time the novelty and underground special-ness of the whole punk/hardcore/emo thing were obliterated by being accepted by popular culture. But I continued to love their music. As people say a lot, because it's absolutely true, their songs got me through a lot. As melodramatic as teenage issues sound, it's possible I wouldn't have made it through those years without HWMs music, lyrics, overall outlook and attitude.

But alas, here we are. It's 2013 and Hot Water Music has played, broken up, explored side projects, reunited, and released several more albums over the last 15ish years. I was lucky enough to follow their career the whole way, thanks to the internet--but I may never have started listening in the first place if it weren't for Amanda putting "220 Years" on that first tape. I haven't spoken to her in approaching 20 years now (holy shit), and the tape lost its playability long ago, but it's a gift I was able to take and really do something with--so for that, I thank her, wherever the hell she is.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Phoenix-based piano rock trio Sun Ghost has announced their new shift into the tech-world, beginning next month. They'll begin to broadcast their shows live over the internet via Google+ Hangouts, with their broadcast debut on Thursday, April 11th from Scottsdale's Rogue Bar.

Social media has been an invaluable tool for independent artists to share their work, so Sun Ghost sees no point in sticking with the status quo when there are constant opportunities rising to spread their art. So they are trying something new.

Google+ has been pushing their new Google+ Hangouts feature recently and, since constant touring is difficult for guys in their late-20s who hold day jobs, they're leaning on this new free service to connect with fans who live outside the physical reach of not just Phoenix or Arizona, but even outside the United States.

Sun Ghost's pianist/vocalist Trevor Denton explains:

"There is enormous potential for musicians here, and fans of music as well-- or, fuck it, for all of art and business in general. Lots of people do GoToMeeting or AdobeConnect for work everyday, but what Google+ has done is informalize that format, taking 'virtual meeting room' concept and putting some Chuck Taylors on it. Of course we'd prefer people to come in person, drink, and talk with us at shows, but there are lots of friends, family, and potential fans outside our physical range. Why not take the show to them?"

Local bands are always wanting to reach new ears and eyes, and social media is opening doors to new resources every day. And now, having a platform as big and free as Google+ has motivated Sun Ghost to lead the way for other dirt poor, unsigned bands.

To join Sun Ghost online for Google+ Hangout shows, follow them on Google+ to receive invites and updates to the web events.

The waves have parted, and we are on the other side of a super hectic schedule, now with some time to rest our legs and write some new music. We just had a wild, sold-out night at the Rhythm Room with Mother Mother from Canada. The picture to the left is myself with 3/5 of their band. Could be the best live band I've ever seen, being totally honest. Blew me away.

Well all that's left for the month is a show up in Flagstaff on Friday, March 22nd at the Monte Vista. Flagstaff friends, come play!

We also have a bunch of exciting things going on in April, like a good ol night at the Rogue, an Ignite Phoenix event, Pub Rock Live, and KWSS's "PhoChella"... I'll have the "shows" section of our site updated this weekend, sorry for the lag.
So for now, just rest yourselves, be at peace, and listen to lots and lots of Sun Ghost. The album is for sale here (CD Baby link on the left), or buy/listen at sunghost.bandcamp.com, iTunes, Google Play, AmazonMP3, Spotify, Last.fm, or what have you.
On Wednesday, February 27th, Sun Ghost will try something new.

We shall take part in a very innovative event . . . a webisode of a behind-the-scenes music reality show. The event, called The Recording Artist, is a live multi-camera webcast from 7pm to 10pm and shows viewers live footage of a band recording one full song at Chaton Studios.

You'll sign up at THERECORDINGARTIST.COM to gain access to all the live broadcasts and the music downloads they've resulted in, including Mergence, the Sugar Thieves, Jared and the Mill, Banana Gun and tons more. Whether we get invited back depends on how many people we draw to watch us, so please sign up even if you cancel your membership right afterward (which you can do at any time)!

You can use your PayPal account to simply pay $3.99 for live-viewing-only, or $5.99 for "full membership", which includes access to a download library of all the past recordings that have been produced on the show, as well as being able to CHAT LIVE on the big screen in the control room DURING the live session. Honestly, that's pretty great. There are several of these every month, so it's well worth the little bit of money...plus there is no longterm obligation, you can always cancel whenever you want.
Lyrics by Trevor Denton / Music by Chris Gerber

Read more about other tracks on the Ancillary Materials page
Buy/listen to the entire album: Bandcamp (for physical CD), iTunes Store, Spotify

This is an odd little song Chris and I wrote together on the old Thomas/Moog organ we used to lug around to every show. It was named "The Water Level" because the 6:8 time keyboard part sounds sort of reminiscent of the musical tracks for the dreaded underwater stages in the Super Mario Bros. games.

The song conveys an inner conflict I've often struggled with in relation to creating and sharing art. I absolutely love working creatively, but when it comes down to having to market and promote the art I've created, I experience a sense of anxiety I don't feel in any other part of life. But since making this rock band my living would require a strong marketing effort, the creative and business aspects of the band are always butting heads with each other. It takes a certain amount of "bravery" for me to let go of my social inhibitions enough to let myself write expressively and get in touch with my artistic side. Then on the other side of the coin, it takes a certain degree of disconnection from the art, at times, to be able to publicize it without feeling cripplingly self-conscious.

So, the analogies I use in the lyrics are meant to show a fearlessness towards a thing itself, but a subsequent realization that the thing itself carries implications of things I cannot help but fear.

I'm not afraid of the mountains, and I'm not afraid of the sea
But I am afraid of falling off cliffs and the fishes that are following me,
Well, the sea is filled with those fishes
And the mountain is surrounded by cliffs,
So the mountains and sea, yeah, they terrify me
With their 'how's' and their 'why's' and 'what-if's'.

Digital Distribution is a GO

Wanna hear a clip from every song on the album all in a row?

The time has come--our little baby has all grown up and it's time to release her into the wild. Over the summer, we posted Side A of the album because we're friends and friends don't keep secrets. Many of you were generous enough to download Side A in exchange for a donation, which is really what allowed us to complete the full album.* So now that Side B is complete, we are celebrating the release of the full-length album with some of our closest and most talented friends.

Check out the flyer, share it to your Facebook page or Tweet it or whatever your preferred method of social networking is (I guess you could even bust out Google+ because hey maybe trees make noise when they fall in the forest with no one around to hear). We'd love to rally your support, bring your friends, share with them your passion for local music if you have any, or if not, at least get down on some great drink deals at the Rogue Bar and some yummy outdoor BBQ. This album is special to us, we've put the hearts of our artichokes and the soles of our shoes into it.

And we will see how much he can manage to accomplish for the People while simultaneously being under the thumb of corporate interest (the MegaPeople).

Sheriff Arpaio, 80, is elected to a 6th term

No matter how happy or unhappy you are with the Presidential election result, we citizens of Arizona are facing a much more immediate and grave problem--Sheriff Joe Arpaio, at the age of 80, was elected to his sixth consecutive term as Maricopa County Sheriff. Never mind the idea that six consecutive terms as sheriff is even legal. Never mind the $50+ million in taxpayer money wasted on defending lawsuits against him and his prisons. And never mind the 400+ sex crimes ignored by MCSO under his lead. Never mind the calculated "raids" of pulling over brown people ostensibly for traffic violations to check their citizenship status. And forget about the Maricopa County judges and Board officials who were arrested on false charges and otherwise intimidated as a result of political grudges (crimes for which former County Attorney Andrew Thomas took the fall and was disbarred). Never mind the time and resources he put into the fantastical investigation into the veracity of the United States' President's birth certificate--an investigation which was, even if it had been legitimate, wholly outside the MSCO's jurisdiction. And hell, even forget about the crimes against humanity that are being committed by Arpaio's office ($43 million paid by Maricopa County in settlements to wrongful death and injury lawsuits).

You still have an 80-year-old man who loves attention and thinks that any publicity is good publicity--even as a public servant. You know those above-mentioned raids? He made regular practice out of notifying the media prior to those operations, to make sure they were thoroughly publicized, but failed to notify the local city police. But how could you blame him? He has won all 6 of his elected terms by wide margins. He obviously has the support of most people in our county. Coincidentally, he's got plenty of support outside the county, and state, as well. In fact 80% of his campaign funds in 2012 were contributed by out-of-state sources. That's over $6 million from states other than AZ deciding who gets the financial upper hand in an AZ election. And now we have a man whose most popular gimmicks include attempting to humiliate male prisoners by treating them like women. But money, I guess, isn't everything. After all, Mitt Romney did just exceed previous campaign finance records in his failed campaign against a not-as-well-funded incumbent in a down economy. So, apparently, Arpaio does have real support.

Beyond any perceived flaws in ideology, Sheriff Joe Arpaio transcends partisan politics by being a high-shining beacon of corruption, nativism, and abuse of power. These are things that even fans of his successful, sane policies of the past (he does have them--namely, the juvenile detention high school which has graduated kids in the thousands) should take severe issue with. The only reasonable explanation for a constituent-approved continuation of Joe's reign of terror today is one of widespread ignorance. No levelheaded person ought to be able to justify a vote for Arpaio once informed of his wide, wide array of sins against Maricopa. Again, these "sins" are not policy-related, they are ethics-related sins. Acts which only find two types of supporters: the uninformed and the criminally dishonest. And I suppose there are a few straightforward, unabashedly racist Joe supporters (one less after J.T. Ready put a bullet in his own brain), but I refuse to believe there are half-a-million of them living in the valley. I tend to believe that most of his 469,407 supporters are simply ignorant. I mean, how could a database being used to hide $80 million of misspent funds not cause some wonder? Somehow, in the digital age of information, the news of Joe's moral atrocities have not reached their wrinkly old ears.

I have one question: what exactly is the case for Arpaio currently? Beyond vacuously empty language such as "he's principled" or "he's tough on crime" or "he will take this county in the right direction," how do you argue his case?

The answer: you just don't.

Vacuously empty is the way our language must remain to make Arpaio sound appealing to the masses. Buzzwords like "principled" and "tough" tend to overshadow words like "corrupt" and "racist," primarily because our divisive political reality has conditioned us to dismiss extreme language as the vacuously empty complaints of biased partisans. But, it's our job to find out which side spouts the empty words. Because they are not empty words if they can be objectively backed up with well-documented examples.

Spend ten minutes on Google, and you'll see.

Album Release Announcement

The band made available online the first five finished tracks in June, calling it "Side A". In December, Side A will be combined with six more songs to create the full-length LP. CDs including original artwork by Sun Ghost's resident artist Kurt Glaeseman will be available for purchase, and it will be distributed digitally on iTunes, Rhapsody, Spotify, Amazon, and other sites. We're now on the other side... Apache Lake Music Festival took place this weekend and we had the time of our lives. I can't even begin to start mentioning Arizona artists that blew me away, because then I'll never be able to stop. But here is a video taken by Ashley Eaton of Merry May vintage shop from our set at the festival. We can't wait to come back next year!

In other news, we have a couple shows coming up in November.. stay tuned, because December will be the month of our FULL ALBUM CD RELEASE of Glitter, Guns & Gold!
Mostly because we like playing music and so selling t-shirts on the side is sort of a forced matter--not really a natural instinct for us.

But the internet, as it often does, saves the day. Much of our limited-edition merch is posted for sale on our Bandcamp site, which newly features a merchandise page. You can browse our selection of designs, colors and sizes, and have that shit mailed to you, no questions asked. Except for, you know, questions about credit cards and your mailing address and stuff. Duh.

Food industry executives have occupied our government's highest agriculture and health policy positions, and lobbying money continues to be poured into buying deregulations to keep cutting ethical, health and environmental corners at a high cost to our planet, our farmers, and our poor. But money can be made from health problems, so of course the pharmaceutical industry is there to address the growing cancer rates, heart disease, etc. Members of the news media were fired and pressured to sign gag orders for trying to expose the connections between processed foods, heatlh problems, and government coverup (for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JL1pKlnhvg0). After all, federal court ruled that news media outlets are not required to stick to facts in their news reports (http://ceasespin.org/ceasespin_blog/ceasespin_blogger_files/fox_news_gets_okay_to_misinform_public.html), so corporations are able to distract the public with whatever they want.

This isn't conservatism, it's not liberalism -- I'm not criticizing a capitalistic system here, because this isn't honest capitalism. Our very money is being printed and loaned to our government by a private entity, with interest, so we perpetually OWE more money than what EXISTS. Our country's health, economic, and environmental problems are the direct result of an infiltration and corruption of government by business. Both parties are guilty on a national level.

But, many of the top CEOs and managers responsible for these unsustainable and unethical business practices, instead of being imprisoned, now hold the highest financial and economic offices in government. We can elect Obama or Romney, but the problem will still exist because Wall Street has become the ones who really make the policies that most directly affect us.
