How I made a simple rain water collection system

With the access and the fast rising cost of clean drinking water, it is very important not to waste a single drop and if possible also find other alternative sources. Good thing rain water is abundant and free in our part of the world. Rain water is relatively clean and can be used for a variety of applications.

So I decided to make my own rain water collection system. Here are some of the guidelines and steps I did to set-up my own rain water collection system:

1. To start building your own rain water collection system you will need a few things:

Saw, Drill, Faucet, Water Sealant, Hose, Hollow Blocks, Drum w/ lid

2. I placed my rain water collection system underneath a downspout connected to our terrace which also serves as a collection system for the excess water used to water our plants. If you don't have a similar set-up at home, you could probably collect water from the downspout from your roof gutters.

3. Drill a hole at least 2 inches from the bottom your drum, enough to fit your faucet. Screw the faucet in place and apply water sealant. Allow to dry and attach a hose for easy access.

4. Drill a hole on the lid of your drum enough to fit the pipe of your down spout. Make sure that the pipe is at least 1/4 deep into the drum and cut-off the excess. This will give you enough space to remove the drum for periodic cleaning. But before you do this make sure that you elevate the drum using hollow blocks or water fixture you have at home. This will allow enough pressure to let the water flow freely. The higher the elevation the better.

Although water is abundant as it, covers approximately 71% of the planet, only a small portion of it is safe to drink. This makes drinking water an extremely rare and valuable commodity. Having access to clean drinking water is indeed a blessing and is slowly becoming more expensive as the years go by. Having experience the wrath of the latest typhoon which knocked-out the power from our area for 6 days, makes you wonder which is more valuable water or electricity? Unfortunately, the loss of electricity would also mean temporary disruption of water supply. Believe me, during these times of scarcity you'd always prefer water against electricity. Makes you rethink your priorities and appreciate the simple things in life.

Here is a list of items where you can consider using rain water:

1. Clean your garage floor - Don't waste clean drinking water just to clean your garage floor of dirt and grime.

2. Water you plants - Plants just love rain water and they grow even better with it.

3. Mop the floor - You walk on floors, so why not consider using rain water in cleaning it.

4. Flush the toilet - After all toilets are places where you do your business, so why waste perfectly good drinking water on flushing your toilet.

5. Clean the house - Why waste perfectly clean water in cleaning your house?

6. Wash your clothes - Once you filter the sediments from the rain water, it should do nicely for washing your clothes.

How to eat a Mabolo Fruit

During, one of our trips to Calamba, Laguna, We happened to chance by a Mabolo Fruit or Velvet Apple. It fascinate us since it was the first time we've ever encountered such a fruit. It resembled an apple in size and shape, except for its hairy skin and strong odor.

According to the natives there, you can just crack it open and using a spoon remove the core and eat the meat. However, take extra caution with its peel as the hairy strands can get inside your pores and irritate your skin.

To savor the experience of eating the Mabolo Fruit we've decided to take it home. Upon searching the internet, here is the most common and recommendation they suggest when eating a Mabolo Fruit added with a bit of personal touch:

1. Wash of the skin with water.

2. Peel of the skin.

3. Cut it into quarters and remove the core and seeds.

4. Place it in the refrigerator for a few hours before serving. This will help reduce it's strong smell as most of the odor is found on the skin.

5. We tried adding a little bit of honey to enhance the flavor. However, eating the Mabolo Fruit on it's own is fine.

How I renewed my Philippine Driver's License

It’s that time of year again when you have to go out and renew you drivers license. They expire every 3 years and it seems that there’s always a new procedure or fee to pay for. This year is no exemption. But I would suggest you go to a License Renewal Center than go to an LTO office, because the lines get crowded especially for documents and payment processing. I’ve summarized some helpful tips to guide you on renewing your Drivers License.

Renewing your License is simple just follow the steps below:

Take your Driver’s License and present it to the front desk for processing and assessment. You will be given an application form to fill-up.
Fill-up the form and proceed for medical check-up. You will be asked to pay for a Php 100 fee. Your height, weight, and BP will be measured and they will be checking your eye sight. Good thing they already removed the drug test which takes about an hour for the results to complete.
Take you form back to the front desk for assessment and your be given a number for picture taking and signature specimen capture.
Wait to be called to receive your documents for payment of the fees.
Wait to be called to the payment window to settle the fees. I paid Php 417.63 for the license.
Take the documents and receipt to the claiming window to receive you license.
Congratulations your done...

I consumed about 1 1/2 hours for the entire process, mostly due to waiting. I would suggest you go in the afternoon as the lines are shorter. I came there around 3 pm and finished at 4:30 pm.

How to make a home made Charcoal Dehumidifier

Summer is officially over and the rainy season is just around the corner. Flooding is a hassle and drying clothes outside could be very challenging. During this time our home becomes very humid inside and sometimes molds form. Molds not only destroy clothes and furniture, it also poses some heath concerns such as nasal stuffiness, throat irritation, coughing or wheezing, eye irritation, or, in some cases, skin irritation. To reduce the humidity inside our home I decided to shop around for a dehumidifier.

After going around asking a lot of questions and searching through the internet I came to the following conclusion:

1. I discovered that commercially available dehumidifiers could be quite expensive, a small version could only be used for a specific area at a time.

2. You consume electricity and can considerably add to your monthly electric bill.

3. & Frequent maintenance is necessary.

So I decided to do some research if I could make my own dehumidifier. Which I found is not only cost effective but also earth friendly.

Here are some of the advantages of making your own Charcoal dehumidifier:

1. It’s cost effective charcoal is relatively inexpensive and you can make as many as you want.

2. You don’t need electricity to make it work.

3. You can reuse the charcoal by letting it dry in the sun or use it for barbecue.

4. It’s low maintenance, you don’t need to change it very often. It last’s about 1-3 months depending on how humid your place is.

5. Not only does it reduce the humidity but it also helps reduce unwanted odor.

To help you out here are some simple steps on how you could make your own dehumidifier:

Materials:

Empty tin can with lid or any plastic container with lid.

Charcoal

Soldering Iron

Permanent Marker

Procedure:

1. Clean an empty can with lid using soap and water.

2. Towel dry to make sure that excess water is removed properly.

3. Fill the can 70% full with charcoal. This give the moisture room to flow inside the can.

4. Cover the can with the lid and using your soldering iron, make holes on the lid. This will help trap some of the moisture inside the can. On areas where moisture is very high water actually accumulates inside the can.

5. Using your permanent marker write down the date on the side of your can so you can track the next day you'll be needing to replace the charcoal.

Thanks to advancements in technology, the Internet, & satellite offices passport processing can now be done in less than an hour. This is provided that you come prepared with the complete requirement s and that you come on time. Fixers have been reduced if not eliminated as forms are no longer handed out as you come in and there no one is hassling you for photo’s and stuff.

To get you started here are some reminders when renewing or trying to get a passport:

Complete and accomplish the application form. You can do this by visiting their website at:

From here you will find the 6 satellite offices within Metro Manila. We chose DFA Alabang which is located inside Gaisano Mall within Alabang Town Center as this was the nearest office from our house. DFA NCR - South (Metro Alabang) is open from 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM (Mondays - Saturdays). I suggest you take the 1st scheduled appointment and arrive there ahead of time as people tend to wake up late. Appointment schedules are set at 30 mins. intervals, this means that they will be letting in applicants inside the processing area every 30 mins. whether or not the preceding batch has already finished. Long lines often form at the validation and number issuance area, but they get more organized once you come in.

Fill out application form completely, download and print with the appointment reference numbers.
Applicants will not be admitted at the entrance gate without valid appointment and application forms. Please don’t bring an entourage when getting a passport. As much as possible only the person applying or renewing a passport must come to the office. This goes for small children, as you need to have your picture taken along with the thumb prints.
Photocopy all the necessary documents before proceeding to DFA Alabang.

a. Valid ID’s although 1 photo copy & original will do. Just bring a long and extra ID for good measure. School age children are also required to present a photocopy & original ID. A photocopy of the mothers ID is required for each child applying for a passport.

b. NSO Birth Certificate original & Photocopy for new passport.

c. Bring your NSO Marriage Certificate Original and Photocopy for families just in case.

d. Bring other supporting government documents & ID’s just in case.

How I set-up my 1st Aquarium

Got some free fresh water fish from Bioresearch’s “The Lost Eden”, after going on a Mini field trip. Kudos to the management and staff of The Lost Eden for the brilliant marketing strategy. Each child that joins the tour is given a fish to take care and take home. If you currently don’t have an aquarium at home, chances are you’ll be purchasing the equipment and supplies from them.

I was still in the 6th grade when I last had an aquarium. The technology has changed much since then and I couldn't remember where to start. The logical step is ask around, but be sure to just ask for the basics, as there are a lot of equipment and supplies that you can put into your aquarium which may eventually cost more than you bargained for.

Here’s a list of equipment and supplies to get you started:

Aquarium Tank
Aquarium Sand or Gravel
Aquarium Filter
Replacement Filter Media (Usually made of activated charcoal padded with foam)
Aquarium Air Pump
Rubber Tubing
Plants or Decorations
Fish net
Fish Food

Now that We have everything that We need it’s time to get started:

1. Wash Clean your Aquarium Tank, decorations and Sand or Gravel. Place the stones into a basin of water. Rinse it about 4 to 5 times or until the water becomes clear to remove the dirt and other impurities from the rocks. I chose small colored stones against sand, as they are much easier to clean and don’t tend to get washed out when you remove the water.

2. Towel dry your Aquarium Tank. Aquarium Tanks usually come with styro foams which you attach to the bottom of your tank with tape to prevent it from slipping.

3. Assemble your filter by placing the filter media inside and place it inside the corner of your Aquarium Tank.

4. Gently place the rocks inside your aquarium tank. Don’t just drop them inside as you may crack or worse break the glass.

5. Fill-up your Aquarium Tank with water enough to submerge the Aquarium filter. Position your decorations inside the Aquarium. Since We only got a small Aquarium Tank, We opted for plants instead of the decorations.

6. Add more water into your tank leaving at least 1 to 2 inches space from the top.

7. Connect your Aquarium filter to the Air pump using your rubber tubing. Plug-in your air pump and allow the water to normalize for about 1 hr.

8. Let the fish float on top of the water for about 15 mins. to allow them to acclimatize to the water inside the tank.

9. From this point Your supposed to just let the fish out from the plastic bags into the tank. However, I notice that there was a lot of dirt and impurities inside the plastic bag, so I carefully slid the fish into the fish net allowing the water to drain into a basin and transferred the fish into the aquarium.

10. Congratulations your done. I personally didn't opt to install a lighting system for the aquarium as it is currently placed on a well lighted area and installing a lighting system will increase our electricity consumption. Make sure to ask for the proper feeding and caring instructions for your fish.

The summer heat has really been so unbearable this past few weeks that we've finally decided to do something about it. Turning on the air conditioning unit is one way to go about it, but the rising cost of electricity bills isn't going to cut it.

One day, during a stroll in the park We noticed how the trees keep the park relative cool despite the scorching heat. Since our room is directly beside our terrace which has no roof to cover it, We decided to buy Chinese bamboos and place it on our terrace. Chinese Bamboo is relatively easy to maintain and tends to multiply rapidly. We discovered that placing the plants, not only reduces the heat coming into the room but it also reduces the accumulation of dust particles.

A week later, We bought a couple of herbs to add to our mini garden at the Holy Carabao Holistic Farm in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, consisting of Mint, Thyme, & Basil among others. We initially planted them in 1 large rectangular pot, but eventually found out that We eventually had to transfer them to bigger individual pots to give them better room for growth. A little bit of organic fertilizer is also recommended for better growth.

Currently, We have added more plants to our mini garden, consisting or corn, lettuce, chili peppers, egg plant and calamansi among others.

Limited soil on your garden, no problem, You could always try planting on pots...

Growing Chili Peppers is not only beneficial, as you can readily have a supply of Peppers for your food preparation needs, but it's bright red color also balances the predominant green color of your garden.

To sum it up here is a list of reasons why you would want to consider starting your own mini garden:

1. It's good for the environment. Not only, does it help reduce the carbon emission levels in the atmosphere. It apparently reduces the amount of dust particles that enter your home.

2. It's a great family activity. You can all tend to your plants as a family, from planting, to watering and harvesting.

3. It's an actual Science Experiment for you and your kids. By growing your own plants you and your child learn the different kinds of plants first hand.

4. You are 100% sure its fresh. By growing your own plants, you can make sure that no harmful pesticides or chemicals are used in growing your plants.

5. You eventually save money in the long run. Once, your plants have grown and are ready for harvesting, you immediately get a constant supply of herbs and spices used in preparing your meals.

6. It's a constructive outlet. You definitely have something worth while to get your mind off the stress of work and personal life.

Starting your own home garden could be quite challenging, specially if it's the first time you'd be doing it. But with a lot of practice and research you could be well on your way to flourishing home garden. You can always visit your nearest botanical garden or seed bank and get baby plants in pots which is much easier to grow than starting from seeds. They are also very much willing to teach you how to grow your baby plant. You’d be surprised to learn that they would be more than willing to share their experiences with you.

Lessons Learned From a First Time Home Schooling Parent

The school year has ended and We have just witnessed our Son's moving up day ceremony. He's successfully accomplished the requirements of the K2 level and will be going to the 1st Grade level next School Year. Seeing how much our Son has learned and improved this School Year, brought tears to my eyes and makes a me proud to have him as my Son. But the entire School Year was not easy. It was in fact very challenging and took a lot of patience and understanding. But if you truly love your child, you can handle anything.

Always remember that a good, solid, and strong foundation is the key to a stable future.

To sum it up, here are some guidelines that helped me through the past year:

1. You learn at your child's pace. It's okay if your child doesn't get the lessons the first time. With constant practice and a lot of exercises, your child will eventually get it.

2. Patience is key. It takes a lot of love and patience to teach your child the lesson plan.

3. Make it simple and fun. The simpler the explanation the better. Remember that your dealing with children and children learn best during play.

4. It's okay to not know everything. Not being able to teach your child properly is every Home School Parents worst nigthmare, but don't worry there is a lot of material available in the Internet, especially in the digital era. Invest in a 2nd set of text books for comparison. Stock-up on educational games and materials.

5. Take your kids on educational trips. The money you save on your child's allowances can be used to buy more educational materials or fund your educational trips. After all nothing beats learning when you experience it first hand.

6. Praise the effort not the mistake. Be quick in praising your child for the effort they spend on exercises and activities, instead of trying to point-out mistakes. Remember, nothing beats a healthy dose of positive affirmation to get the spirits going.

7. Practice, practice, practice. We're trying to build a good solid foundation for your child's education and practicing right will set your child to develop the right habits that guide him as he grows up.

8. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Consider mistakes as learning experiences which you and your child can learn from and solve together.

9. It's okay to ask for help. There are a lot of home schooling parents out there. You just need to know where to find them and you'd be surprise to find out that they would be more than willing and happy to help and share their experiences with you.

10. Don't give-up yet. Home Schooling is work, it's a lot of hard work. It would take much of your time and understanding to pull it off. Our child's young minds are like sponges, they easily absorb anything you put into them. So be careful of what you do in front of them, remember that our child's listen more to the things We do rather than to the things We say.

We don't know up to when We'll be home schooling our kids but at the moment We're talking things a step at a time, a School Year at a time. We have 2 younger kids and hopefully We could also home school them.
