The Royal Easter Show Wine Awards Trophy Giving Dinner (phew!) was a culmination of some of the best New Zealand wines, food, industry folk and me.

Worried that we weren’t going to get a table having been told this new eatery has quickly become very popular with locals, we arrived early-ish and enjoyed a few wines, quite a few polenta chips and soaked up the atmosphere before launching into the menu.

So well in fact that Lili and I have decided to do a ‘health’ week after Easter. Damian was dismayed, telling us over and over that a week of steamed veges would not help. It was also extremely easy and cheap so I have resolved that as long as I have my own tomato plants, I will  make my own salsa (bar when I'm at the Ponsonby International Food Court. The salsa at that Mexican place is phenomenal, I've been known to ask for a little extra to take home with me).

My flatmate and I bought two tomato plants on Labour Day last year from the Ponsonby Plant Centre.  Since then we have both endeavoured to rear them to brilliance, watering them most days, feeding them special plant growth food, trimming the suckers that grow between the branches and tying them carefully to the wooden creeper fence we found handy in our garden.
